"Only a fool fights in a burning house."

Actuarial Lurker

Klingon Commander Kang appeared in Deep Space 9 and Voyager as well. The actor Michael Ansara was in some very big Bible epics of the 1950s and 1960s like The Ten Commandments, The Robe and The Greatest Story Ever Told

Actuarial Lurker

A generational ship disguised as an asteroid...a clever hide in plain sight idea

Actuarial Lurker

The episode wads criticized for being another asteroid threatening a planet show only weeks after the Native American obelisk episode. To compound that the reused shots of the asteroid from THAT episode in cut away shots of THIS one

Actuarial Lurker

TOS seems to be obsessed with planets or situations where strong women dominate the men with their mysterious powers....

Florian

Slow but sure we are comming to the end of TOS, do you already have a plan for the future voyages of the Enterprise? After TOS I think it would be best to watch the movies 1-7 and then go to TNG. I dont know when to start with the other three phase two movies, because they are also woven into TNG storys. But I also reccomend at least the first two new movies :)

Joe Concepts

The call coming from inside the house is a much older horror trope than "Scream" which makes sense since it references lots of old movie tropes. I forget which movie first used it, but pretty sure it goes back to the '70s, at least.

Joe Concepts

I've never seen such analysis of episode titles! :) And the "Hollow" one turns out to be fairly literal in this case.

Gryff

I think it was Dial M for Murder where its a throwaway line from some rando policeman

Ginger

maybe that's why almost nobody has reactions to "Stranger Than Fiction" up.

Darin Foat

Michael Ansara, who plays Kang, also had a successful career doing voices for animation. Probably his most famous voice role was Mr. Freeze in the Batman animated series.

I think your ass might be correct George

Badger

For my Belly is Hollow and I Have Touched the Fridge...

John Zelinka

That's more than a little funny!

Skyruff Creative

Those silly over stylized fighting chops e.t.c. are a factor of TV / movies of the time period. You see them in most action TV shows and movies including some James Bond movies. And no, they are NOT particularly done in Star Trek, they always looked that bad.

Raven Dark

It feels like one of those things that happened because Hollywood didn't fully understand the way real martial arts worked at the time, and they tried to incorporate it to make people look badass without knowing what they were doing.

Badger

This feelin' inside - I'm not one of those who can easily hide..

Simone's Coconut Squire

Re: Simone questioning an oppressive theocracy- The Catholic Church got people to punish themselves, sometimes with horrific torture, for 'random thoughts' for centuries, but they're still around in the modern day.

Ewan Mcdonald

I think its from When a Stranger Calls.

Bandaloop

It was a theocracy, and then Kirk, Spock, and McCoy brought science and saved their world.

Kurt Hockenbury

The novelization of "For the World Is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky" says the problem was a hornet's nest: "A very simple problem," Spock called from the engine room. "And comparatively easy to repair." He came back, holding one hand out stiffly. "I think we can now attempt the course correction, sir."   "What was wrong?"   "In creating a completely natural environment for the people on this ship, its builders included many life forms-including insects. A control jet in there was blocked by a hornets' nest." "You're not serious, Mr. Spock?"   Spock held up a forefinger. It was swollen to twice its normal size. "I destroyed the nest," he said. "In doing so, I was stung." He sat down, resuming his watch of the console instruments. "The guidance system is taking over, sir. I think we can revert to automatic controls."

Sergio Meira

Why does Chekov curse against the Kosaks? Frankly, I think it's just because the screenwriters didn't know much about Russia. Roddenberry & co. were very much in favor of diversity -- hence a Scot, a Japanese, a Kenyan/Tanzanian (Uhura), and a Russian. But, like most Americans at the time, the screenwriters, despite liking diversity, didn't know much about non-Americans. So Sulu likes katanas, Chekov curses against Cossacks, etc. because these are bits and pieces of knowledge that were widespread about the Japanese or the Russians in those days. Just like Scotty loving whiskey. If there was an Italian helmsman, he'd probably be saying "mamma mia!" and would express his love of pizza.

Sergio Meira

Maybe that was Roddenberry's idea of feminism? Call it zero-wave feminism?

Happy Hanukkah

He also had one memorable appearance in Babylon 5.

Rupert Purcat

I do believe that Musk is researching and building such implants for the inhabitants of the USA's 51'st state of Canada, Enjoy your future...

nigel Macbug

to help Simone start Dune 1st paragraph ln the week before their departure to Arrakis, when all the final scurrying about had reached a nearly unbearable frenzy, an old crone came to visit the mother of the boy, Paul.

Logan Kerlee

Really enjoyed the watchalong! :) I'm always down to watch some Trek! My question - once this series ends will we move on to TNG or will there be a vote for a new series? I'd 100% be down for TNG and another totally different series - I enjoy TNG that much!

Thomas Larsen

I am so upset, I thought "oh neat I have never watched TOS, doing 2 eps a piece means I will never catch up and always have something to watch". Well fucking cold got me and a few binges later and I am all caught up. This channel is inventing new problems for me that I didnt know were possible. grr *angry face* *love heart*

James Wilson

Simone hasn't read Stormlight yet? You know what that means. We clearly need a reaction to Simone reading it aloud. Shouldn't take too much of your time.

Patrick - Excelsior

I always liked Day of the Dove. When Enterprise blew up the Klingon vessel, there were no living people on board. They beamed them over to the Enterprise before shooting it. fyi A well-placed karate chop, specifically to the neck, can potentially cause unconsciousness. This is due to the presence of sensitive areas like the carotid sinus and jugular vein which, when struck with sufficient force, can disrupt blood flow to the brain or trigger the vagus nerve, leading to a loss of consciousness.

Patrick - Excelsior

The Cossacks were seen as "the Czar's savage pit bulls" for their indiscriminate use of force against civilians. This led to some Russians using the term as a disparagement.
