This felt like the end at the time.

The pistol is a Walther PPK, James Bond's signature weapon

I'm glad George called out how beautifully shot this film is. The cinematographer was Roger Deakins, who is an absolute genius. He also shot 1917, Sicario, a bunch of Coen brothers films, and finally won his first Oscar for Blade Runner: 2049.

The formula starting Bond movies for the longest time was: Bond meets with M (Minister) Flirts with Moneypenny (Minister's secretary) Visits Q (Quartermaster) to get outfitted with gadgets M, Moneypenny, and Q were played by the same actors across the first several Bonds.

I don't like harshing on anybody who enjoys this movie, but for me it is such a letdown. I won't disagree that on a technical level it is MILES ahead of "Quantum of Solace". The editing is smoother, the cinematography is gorgeous, and the scripting is "tighter". Taken in a vacuum, it's the better film no question. But it's not in a vacuum, and as part of the larger Bond franchise -- even just the smaller Craig portion of the franchise -- this starts a sharp downslide for me. Big-picture, I think it's a serious problem that the primary goal of the main villain is personal revenge against M as an individual. There's no other agenda. Everything about stealing the list of undercover agents and attacking MI6 was just setup so he would have an opportunity to get to her. That's not an appropriate goal for a James Bond film. Revenge and personal animosity has always been PART of the Bond series, but there's always been some other goal: Political, religious, or economic. The twist that Silva's just gunning for M takes the wind out of everything else. It's like they tried to repeat the twist from "Hot Fuzz", where Nicholas Angel at first thinks that there's real estate scheme going on that will net millions, only to be completely bamboozled by the fact it's about winning the Village of the Year award. It worked in that film because it's a comedy and the absurdity of the whole thing is commented on repeatedly. That was a TWIST. Here it's just...underwhelming. On a more micro level, I just cannot accept Silva's escape from the MI6 holding cells because it is just SO dumb. Q -- the tech guy --plugging the computer into an open network when they know the enemy has already hacked their system. The access code working like a puzzle minigame to be solved. The cell doors being on the same network to be opened remotely. Everything timed so precisely that James is standing in the EXACT spot for the train to come at him when he catches up to Silva. It strains credulity. I MAY have accepted this in a movie 30 years ago. The public didn't understand computers back then so plenty of movies had "everything online" where you could remotely open doors by "hacking the mainframe". The public also didn't get how computer networks worked so they wouldn't understand about isolated LANs. I also may have accepted this if they tried to recapture the tone or feel of the Roger Moore era, where the goal was Fun instead of Art. But in 2012, with their HEAVY emphasis on "realism", I can't accept any of this in a "serious" movie. That one sequence ruins everything else for me. Many people say this is the best of the Craig films, or one of the top 2. For me, it's a solid #3, and that's only because the next two are even worse.

Desmond Llewelyn, who played the original Q, appeared in more Bond movies than any other actor. He played opposite every Bond except Craig.

Chris

Pretty much every film that midway through you stop and say "wait, why does this look so much better than it seems like it should?"

Jane Harker

Pierce Brosnan was given an exploding pen by Q in Goldeneye.

This is such a gorgeous film, I'm so glad I watched it in theaters. From the opening song right to the end it's a masterpiece. My favorite Bond film.

Lachlan Caldwell

Watching the Daniel Craig Bond movies with you gives me a new appreciation for them, that I didn't have the first time around. That said, I do still prefer the classic James Bond films (Connery - Brosnan). They're lighter in tone, there's more humour, you don't leave the theatre feeling exhausted like you do with Craig. I'm really looking forward to seeing you do more reactions of the classic bond films.

Damian

As the 50th anniversary Bond film there was a lot riding on it, as well as at the time there were a lot of wider implications regarding the place of Bond and Bond movies in the modern world, and whether the new action/spy/thrillers had superseded it (e.g. Bourne). I thought it was tone-perfect e.g. the themes of Bond being too old which George noted, leads to one of my favourite scenes when 007 and Q first meet; nostalgia weaved into the plot and also paving the way for Bond to continue all grow the series. I was very interested to see your reactions to this film and whether viewers who hadn’t grown up with Bond would enjoy it in the same way as those who had. I am so happy you enjoyed it probably because it has all the right ingredients for a good Bond film in its own right - great action scene (before the credits), a wonderful villain, stunts, exotic locations etc as well as being a beautiful film in its own right. As ever, great reaction.

Tom M

Connery drives that Aston Martin in Dr. No IIRC.

Tom M

Moneypenny was either Bond’s or M’s secretary—can’t remember. She’s a badass field agent in this movie. They always flirted but never boned.

Watch Sean Connery's Goldfinger and you find out what that button does :)

This movie looks so good because it's Roger Deakins behind the camera, who is arguably the best to ever do it. He did Blade Runner 2049, which had a lot of the same lighting and coloring as Skyfall. Highly recommend looking up his filmography and knocking out any other movies he's done that you haven't seen yet

Happy Hanukkah

Terrible recipe?! I take umbrage, George! This is part of my pizza recipe! Oh, and it's "Byzantium," you young whippersnapper!

Derek McCasky

You should watch Paddington, and Paddington 2. Both are some of the most heartwarming, feel good movies ever. Ben Wishaw that plays Q in these is the voice of Paddington.

Helly R

It's Goldfinger. DB5 with the ejector seat.

Happy Hanukkah

I'm always glad to watch an Albert Finney movie. 24:59 Meh. Not once did she ask: "Are you comfortable, Sir?" 30:30 Bratislava! 31:26 The local pro-rat community erupts in *outrage*! :-) [/waves to Spence]

Can hardly wait for the last Craig Bond movie!

Peter Dillard

The gun is a Walther PPK which Bond was forced to move to from a Beretta (also small) in one of the earliest movies.

Peter Dillard

The car is the Aston Martin from Goldfinger and a number of subsequent movies.

Peter Dillard

Yes, Moneypenny is M's secretary in all the old bond movies.

Mike Medaugh

I've been a Bond fan all my life, yes the Roger Moore ones are pretty cheesy but good fun. The first 2 in Craig's arc didn't do anything for me I actually disliked them, but Skyfall is top-notch and made me go back and rewatch them and come to appreciate them even if they pale in comparison to the next 3. These 5 cemented Craig as my favorite Bond because the writing is done so well and pays tribute to the original Flemming stories. The reintroduction of SPECTRE and all that.

James Falato

Simone... You wondered how someone would only face the elevator door instead of looking out at the surroundings... My Sister has a fear of looking-out at the surroundings from high places, and has to face the door whenever in a glass elevator, and closes the window when at a window seat on a plane, and won't walk near the edge of a hilltop...

James Falato

I have a P.S. - When I first heard the Film's title "Skyfall" I instantly thought of the "Chicken Little" Poem 3where "Chicken Little" was under an apple tree and was hit on the head by a falling apple, and mistakenly thought the worst and went to tell the King "The Sky is Falling!!!"

Tom M

Thanks. Couldn’t remember.

Bookwormy

So glad you watched.

Stuart Sutcliffe

So I'm gonna rewatch this movie before watching their reaction. In part because I remember watching it and being so disappointed when I watched it in theatres that--this is true--I gave up on the 007 franchise. And no one shared the same opinion as me. I was astonished, and still am surprised. So I think I'm gonna torture myself, rewatch it, and write a blog post about it. Then I'll watch this reaction.

The Real Andrew Kim

This movie is the most fan service of all the Craig Bonds imo. A big part of the bond franchise is that the stories do not necessarily relate to one another from movie to movie but there were always hallmarks and touchstones that defined the franchise. Examples are the martini bit, his classic lines, his iconic walther ppk pistol, the tuxedo, the aston martins, receiving gadgets from Q, the antagonistic relationship with M (Who originally was a man and Feines character is a direct recast of the original M) and his running "will they/won't they" relationship with Moneypenny. You really need to watch the whole bond series to appreciate all the homages and easter eggs in this movie.
