Odd Thomas

Casino is my favourite Craig Bond, but this is a close second.

Superpotroast

The exploding pen is from Goldeneye..

Ste Rawlings

Skyfall is for sure the most thematically complex film in the Bond franchise, offering a meditation on British imperial decline and the struggle to find relevance in a modern world. Bond and M represent relics of a fading empire. Their old-fashioned methods and mindsets are representations of Britain's imperial past struggling to adapt to post-colonial realities. M specifically functions as a personification of England itself - making difficult and morally questionable decisions in the name of national security, just as the Empire did throughout its history. The film acknowledges Britain's controversial imperial actions in places like Hong Kong and Ireland, suggesting that you cannot escape the past and it must be reckoned with. . Bardem's character embodies the consequences of imperial hubris - the abandoned agent who returns as the empire's sin made flesh. His relationship with M mirrors the complicated feelings many former colonies have toward Britain: resentment, betrayal, and lingering attachment. There is a visual motif of decay throughout the film - from Bond's physical deterioration to the crumbling Skyfall estate which reinforces this theme of imperial twilight.

You should watch some of the older Bond movies for more context. My picks (two movies per bond, except George who only did one but which imo is an underrated one) would be: Sean Connery: From Russia with Love, Goldfinger George Lazenby: On Her Majesty's Secret Service Roger Moore: The Spy Who Loved Me, For You Eyes Only Timothy Dalton: The Living Daylights, Licence to Kill And maybe (goofy) Moonraker for the "bond in space" film.

Odd Thomas

You saw the exploding pen in Goldeneye. Yes, a lot of the references were to old Bond movies. You should watch at least a couple of each Bond iterations. Goldfinger, The Spy Who Loved Me, On Her Majesty's Secret Service & The Living Daylights would be my picks; one from each era (you've already seen Brosnan).

Maiki

The opening sequence was shot in Adana, Turkey, but it's supposed to be Istanbul in the movie. The car is an Aston Martin DB5, the most iconic Bond car, first introduced in Goldfinger in 1964. The Skyfall Estate wasn't an existing house, they've built it for the movie and burned it afterwards.

lordoflondon

they watch 3-4 movies a week all year round. forgetting a single item from one movie a year ago isnt surprising, thats close to 200 movies. its not like it was some major plot point, literally a minor reference throw away joke

Arcade Sufi

On her majesty's secret service is a great Bond film

Re: Priest holes: in 16th Century England, around the time of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, the country officially broke from Catholicism and became Protestant. There was increasing religious persecution of Catholics, which only became worse after Elizabeth came to the throne and a number of Catholic plots to replace her were uncovered. It became illegal to assert the authority of a foreign power such as the Church of Rome over the monarchy. Priests were being hunted as a result of this new law so Catholic families built hideaways into their homes to hide their local priests from the priest hunters.

Lyle Morgan

You nailed it with the picks from each era. Live and Let Die is my favorite Moore, but it’s surely corny and dated. TSWLM is the better choice.

Hakuna

i don't know where you heard the next two aren't as good, they're both equally great for sure

Bon Wa

Broccoli, that family has been producers or atleast somewhat involved in almost all bond films, if not all. Albert R. Broccoli produced 17 bond films.

Karl Ries

Not sure what order they watched these in, but I'm hoping Simone's "He's alive!" at Bond's first appearance after the credits was a reference to Chev Chelios' "I'm alive!" in Crank that was posted yesterday. If so, LMFAO!

Maiki

And now they're gone. When George talked about a "James Bond Multiverse", I was hoping that Amazon isn't listening....

Christopher Runyon

Give it 5 years… they will make a Moneypenny show, a young Bond show, and young Felix show. God help us

Spacedone

I think we all know that they're definitely going to do that. They're not spending all that money just for the right to make one movie every 3 or 4 years. They're going to milk that IP until we're all sick to death of it.

REDR58

There have been some cameos of actors who appeared in previous Bond movies which I can’t really talk about because spoilers (one in particular is an actor who appeared in 2 different roles in 2 different movies and then briefly popped up in a background shot in a third movie). Co-producer Michael G. Wilson has appeared in 17 bond movies to this point, starting from “Goldfinger” (1964) to “No Time to Die” (2021). Some big spoilers at this link, so be warned: https://screenrant.com/james-bond-michael-g-wilson-cameos/

REDR58

The opening credits sequence featuring nude/silhouetted women dancing is something that goes back to the very first James Bond movie “Dr. No” from 1962.

REDR58

If it were up to me they would watch them all, maybe doing one or two a month but that is a good selection from each era.

djKENTO

There is no film where James meets “other bonds” because there is no “other bond”. It’s always just James. There are some weird films tho like Never Say Never Again where Sean Connery literally remade one of his earlier Bond films, Thunderball. It was a whol licensing thing, wasn’t made by the same production company and Connery hadn’t been bond in YEARS.

D. T. Nelson

The visual look of this Bond movie is one of the best. Sam Mendes definitely knows how to shoot a film.

Odd Thomas

Another good Sam Mendes film with Daniel Craig is Road to Perdition.

Monica Alarcon

It's probably been mentioned before but I think after finishing these bond movies you should go back to the very beginning and watch all the Bond movies from Dr. No onward...

REDR58

There is that somewhat 4th wall-breaking moment in “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” that comes slightly close to this concept of “other” Bonds but I think we should save that until we get to that movie.

RLYtoxic

Pierce Brosnan is my favorite Bond

Ari Ramirez

Spectre is indeed very disappointing, despite having a few good moments. No Time To Die is pretty good, but not as good as Skyfall. This may sound weird, but Spectre is especially infuriating because of what the producers did to Radiohead. If you know, you know.

Anodyne

Yes, this is the perfect point to go back to the beginning - and Dr. No is not just the first but also one of the best. Also, Simone won't mind the young Sean Connery and George, well, Ursula Andress...

Stretch

Its the car that you watched him win in casino royale, And the Brocolli family has owned the rights for Bond until very recently they sold it so Amazon mgm studio! Also the priest hole was for catholics to hide where they secretly worshiped during the protestant reformation.

FranciscoGios

The explosion pen is a call back from one of the earliest Pierce Brosnan’s 1990s Bond movies it was first used in GoldenEye & also the first Bond movie when the Gem Actress Judi Dench first appear for the character M.

HansD

That classic Bond Aston Martin DB5 with the machine-guns and ejector seats... So good.

Skyruff

Second hottest shaving scene at least. See Sommersby (1993) Richard Gere and Jodie Foster

Thomas Young

They did consider having Sean play Kincaide, but decided it would be too confusing.

gobmob2000

Back during the rain of Queen Elizabeth the first, a few hundred years ago, It used to be illegal to be a catholic in Britain and a lot of Catholics went into hiding, so they build these Priest holes as hiding places.

djKENTO

Glad to hear you’re interested in completing the series because this is the only Bond to get a full character arc.

REDR58

Good reaction! This is my second favorite Craig Bond movie after Casino Royale. The rest of them I’m less enthralled with and find the final one “No Time to Die” the worst of all. But we can wait for that… Guns like the one Bond is issued do exist which only an authorized user can fire. This is done with fingerprint readers or RFID. The abandoned city island is a real place. Hashima Island aka Gunkanjima is near Nagasaki and was occupied from 1887 to 1974. https://www.japan.travel/en/spot/752/ The woman playing the minister who lectures M is the late Helen McCrory who was the wife of Damien Lewis (“Richard Winters” in Band of Brothers). She died aged 52 from cancer. She portrayed Cherie Blair, wife of Tony Blair as played by Michael Sheen in the 2006 movie “The Queen” (with Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth) and again in 2010’s “The Special Relationship,” two out of the three movies about Blair. Sheen played Blair in all 3 movies, including the first one in 2003 called “The Deal.” Simone and George I highly recommend you go back and start the Bond series properly after finishing up the Craig era. I would say watch them all!

REDR58

Yes, the continuity so to speak of all the other Bond movies before Craig is tenuous at best with some exceptions in elements of the story of the character not so much the actor portraying him.

SpankTheMonk

I think they did shoot some shots of the opening in Istanbul and the Grand Bazar rooftops

SpankTheMonk

Oh a Roger Yuan cameo! He was such a great villain in Shanghai Noon.

Amar

"Go back and start the bond series" is a huge commitment and some of those movies are horrible and look very dated. I think they should pick and choose some good ones like Goldeneye but not all of them mate.

Brandon

So many Bond references in this one. It'll be interesting to see you guys understand them retroactively if/when you watch the older movies. For a movie with an excellent Albert Finney performance, check out the Coen Bros. movie Miller's Crossing.

davidov

I'm afraid they won't remember enough from previous watchings. For instance: in Skyfall the movie mentions an exploding pen and they (CB) wondered if that was a reference to an older Bond movie. It was: Goldeneye, which they've watched not so long ago and was the only non-Craig Bond they've watched on the channel so far. George even said back then what a brilliant plot device it was at the end of Goldeneye, but alas: no active memories came up.

Rupert Purcat

I really hope you have time to continue with 007 after these 5. Cheers Ciny

Christopher Feiertag

The pinnacle of modern day-Bond. (Includes everything since Goldeneye) Now I think it’s time for the classics?

Philipp Roensch

Now this is a great bond movie, and I think a quite self-aware about what the collateral for old spy games is. Yet still, quite celebratory of old Bond, cleary with the old car, the male M and Miss Moneypenny reinstated, it feels quite rewarding and deserved for Craig. Wonderful reaction, Silva really took you by surprise :D.

REDR58

I think Silva is the most interesting of the Craig-era Bond villains by far.

djKENTO

oh and day seven of requesting ANDOR.

Tim T—

George, if you're thinking about Ralph Fiennes as an evil character, I'd recommend his performance in Conclave. One of the best movies of last year.

Logan Kerlee

This theme by Adele is awesome for sure! Her voice is incredibly beautiful and it FITS so well for this scene/movie in general! lmao, who said that the art was very vaginal? xD hahahahaha Would I play a drinking game with a scorpion? Hell to the no! xD I'm not wanting that sort of pain. lol, I'll pass on that, thank you very much. Yes, Simone - previous Bond films included various gadgets and devices of various sorts that did all types of crazy things! Watching Bond films ages ago was exciting - seeing each of his new gadgets was always a blast! Kinda disappointing that you and George never watched any of them. :P lmao - I felt that it was awesome that they made references to the previous Bond films. THE JAW SCENE.. whoa FUCK! It was gross/cool/awesome!! I mega dug on that! I'm glad that Connery wasn't included. It would be wildly confusing/distracting for audiences! hahahaha, that hand bit is hilarious! xD Made me laugh hering that! :) Super dug on this reaction! Didn't comment much on this one - just because I was too busy enjoying the movie with you guys. :)

Misha T

I've always loved that looooong take when Silva is first introduced, as he takes a full 1 minute and 40 seconds to slowly walk from the elevator and deliver his speech about the rats. Bardem's pacing and delivery -- and the simultaneous camera work -- are perfect.

REDR58

“The Reader” from 2008 with Kate Winslet and Ralph Fiennes is an excellent movie where Fiennes does not play an evil character. It also has a wonderful soundtrack.

benjamin hall

The exploding pen is a reference to one of the Peirce Brosnan films you watched last year :)

Matthew Maxon

That Ricky Tan joke was really funny!

Amelie W

"M" is the constant codename for the head of the ministry of foreign intelligence, i.e., the spymaster of England, in the Bondiverse. In real life they actually have a different initial. I don't know what it is. ["Secret Agent Man" by Johnny Rivers plays here]

Vegard

I love that you noticed the excellent cinematography in this movie, and there is a very good reason for this: The cinematographer on Skyfall was Roger Deakins, who also worked on Blade Runner 2049, No Country for Old Men and 1917, to name a few :)

Jesus F Christ

After you watch the next Daniel Craig James Bond movie, SPECTRE, you owe it to yourself to watch this video: https://youtu.be/o4mIWoLg69Y?si=KKXfSnUhooHvkde7 I don't know if you are both fans of Radiohead (I think Simone is), but they were hired to write the theme song for SPECTRE, but the producers went with a song by Sam Smith instead. That link above shows what the opening credits would have been like with Radiohead's (superior, imo) theme restored. There's another good video on YouTube about how Radiohead's theme might even be the most perfectly constructed Bond theme song. I don't know about that, but I love the song. https://youtu.be/tiesXqT1P3g?si=ts-TIonFqg46uv4D Also, just so you know, every Bond film has a theme song performed by a "big-name" artist from the era of the film's release, usually titled the same as the film and revolving around the film's themes. The opening credits features the song accompanied by images referencing the film, and plenty of nude female silhouettes.

Opti_Frog

With Skyfall, i watch until around the 1 hour 45 minute mark. The last half hour is just too stupid. 😅

Brendan Rafferty

Absolutely mind bogglingly stupid… makes Mission Impossible 2 look brilliant. The entire final act with the absolutely stupid standoff at the manor, complete with Home Alone style boobytraps, is absolutely insulting and logic-defying. Why were they alone against the stupid bad guys. One phone call and they could have had an entire regiment of British infantry

Simon

Please do more Bond films!

David Lonewolf Wright

I am surprised after making the joke about the "My cabbages!" guy, you missed the opportunity to shout "My nuts!" with the stand Bond and Eve crashed into.
