Haha, awesome thumbnail!

Silence of The Lambs is my fav poster. Another great one is Anatomy of A Murder.

Spencer M. Day

“Big” came before “13 going on 30”. Great reaction. P.S. This was, I believe, your second Penny Marshall directed film. Want a third, try “Jumpin’ Jack Flash”.

Spencer M. Day

P.S.S. “A League of Their Own” was the first.

Jason Pratt

I saw this as a kid and didn’t get the ick factor. I still think it’s hilarious. Another one y’all might like that doesn’t star Hanks is That Thing You Do. He’s featured in it, but he also wrote and directed it. Saving Mr Banks he plays Walt Disney securing the rights for Mary Poppins. I think you’d like both.

Jeff K.

Fun fact: this movie was co-written by Anne Spielberg, as in Steven’s sister.

If you sub to Letterboxd, you get to see movie poster variants.

James Storey

This movie hasn't aged at all! Great reaction.

Mastervodo

Is it just me, or when Cinebinge videos come out, do you click on the Youtube version first just to hear Simone's "Welcome to" intro for the day?

ShōNuff3K

What makes a great movie poster? Strong visual impact Clear and simple design Emotional or conceptual hook Iconic imagery Strong typography Smart use of negative space Unique style A sense of mystery Branding consistency Timeless appeal

The toy store was FAO Schwartz in New York. It was a huge toy store on 5th Ave (now closed). Their current location in NYC is on Rockefeller Plaza.

Watch This! with Joe and Kevin

FAO Schwartz in New York City is the toy store. It's still there, and you can still play on the piano.

Lovely stuff - I mean, what more could you want from a comedy like this? Loved it when I was 11, and still love it now 37 years later. There was a small flurry of "body swap" style movies at the time in the late 80s, but this was on another level. Also, Howard Shore knocking it out of the park with the score. Your reaction to the trampoline scene is gold - that's a keeper! This reaction as a whole really cheered me up today, can't thank you enough.

jmundt33a

This was 16 years before 13 Going on 30. When I saw the first previews of Garner and Ruffalo, I said “Oh great. Big-ette.” And then subsequently wound up loving it.

If you guys want to check out other early Tom Hanks movies I suggest Splash and The Burbs.

Adam K

Great reaction! I don’t think you all realized how popular this movie was back in the day. Tom Hanks movie trajectory was already on the way up with Splash and Dragnet, but this one just put him on a totally different level. A perfect family movie that appealed to both kids and adults.

rictus grin

an accidental pick but a happy one ;)

For another swap movie where an actor plays as someone else in there body that was surprising good that you should check out is Freaky (2020). Both Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton do a spectacular job, plus the addition of a horror slant to the body swap trope was really fun.

Dan Holmes

The Magical Toy Store in both this AND Home Alone 2 are based on FAO Schwarz which used to be in Manhattan but closed after the internet destroyed society lol I was lucky enough to go a couple times :)

Ryan Skinner

I watched this movie so many times as a child, but it's been probably 30 years since the last time, so never as an adult- and wow, it's fascinating revisiting it with a better understanding of Susan's perspective. What a joy. Thanks guys!

Dan Holmes

24:28 I honestly think is the hardest Simone has ever laughed on this channel :)

Sergio Meira

Question: if he's, like, 11, and she took off her clothes for him (at least) -- was that statutory rape, even if she wasn't aware of his being a child?

Itbewhatitbe

i dont think so imo. because this isnt just meeting someone young looking at a bar who lied to you. this is straight up a 30+ year old man, at your job, which you presume would also ID check their age before getting hired, and looks 30+. hell he likely actually had an ID that said his adult age, in order to get hired. so if we even assume that she went out of her way to look at his ID, and it says hes an adult. then it cant possibly be stat rape. otherwise, no one will ever be safe lol if ID and visual confirmation isnt enough.

John Mcleod

My favourite poster is Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

Happy Hanukkah

/looks at thumbnail /readies the most patronizing voice ever /pats Simone on head and says: Who's a big girl?! :-)

jmundt33a

He’s 13. It happens after his birthday, doesn’t it?

Rob Church

You know as soon as they establish a code, George will immediately hire a little Chinese boy to show up on Simone's doorstep to freak her out.

Darin Foat

This movie has a couple of connections that give me an excuse to once again plug a couple of great Robin Williams movies. A few years after this Penny Marshall directed Awakenings, with Williams and Robert DeNiro. It was nominated for Best Picture. And Mercedes Ruehl, who plays Josh's mom, won an Oscar for Best Supporting actress in The Fisher King, which also stars Williams and Jeff Bridges, and was directed by Terry Gilliam.

Jeff Norwood-Brown

I think this was the movie that really launched Tom Hanks. Or one of them. There was actually a time, just after the dinosaurs, when he wasn’t actually famous. Can you imagine such a thing? Incidentally, me and my wife played on that piano on our honeymoon. Not the whole time, obviously.

Alan Kobb

F.A.O Schwarz is the most amazing toy store in the world with their flagship store in New York City. All year around, but especially around December, the huge store is an experience unlike any other. Unfortunately the video game in BIG was made for the movie, but in the 1980s, the earliest video games were very much like that, in that they were often like the early text-based adventure maze computer games, but with pictures.

Adam Wetstein

Triedto watch the watch along but your opening chat was so long i just switched

thomas king

This is a really good movie. My favorite part is when he ate the baby corn.

Rachel W

He was 13 in the film.

Simon Pegged Me

My initial reaction was to see this as an interesting legal conundrum: For the purposes of the law, is age determined by the physical body or the mind of the person in it. But I quickly moved away from that. It's statutory rape. (She did more than take off her clothes for him.) Otherwise, we'd be handing pedophiles a Get Out of Jail Free card, since they could say, sure, their body is that of a 45-year-old man, but it's just a prison for the 13-year-old boy trapped inside. If the law abides by that, it would be them the legal right to sleep with tweens. No one wants that. Penny Marshall certainly didn't. She used whimsy and good editing to make sure the audience breezed right by that issue.

Dwight Scarn

I really wanted to play that fantasy game when I was younger. Apparently it was made for the movie.

Happy Hanukkah

Mercedes Ruehl? As in the Mercedes Ruehl who plays the titular character (alongside Jean Reno) in the criminally obscure Roseanna's Grave (1997, aka For Roseanna)? That Mercedes Ruehl? :-)

James Falato

The Floorboard Piano really is in the NYC FAO-Schwartz Toy Store, and Yes, People - young and old alike - play tunes on it every day...

Hope For Us Network

Chicago in the 90s had a FAo storie that was actually bigger in square footage than NYC. It came about because of the pop culture influence of Big and Home Alone 2 bc FAO didn't have a franchise chain. The store shut down just after 9/11 but it had 6 fricking floors of interactive toys and stuff to see and buy.

Morningstar

Please watch The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.💕

Roger Davies

Watched Vice Versa you cowards. 😆

John_rd

My favourite Tom Hanks movie is 'The 'Burbs' so much fun. Plus Carrie Fisher is in it so it's double good :)

Vez

Hanks was perfect in this. For Deniro in a somewhat comedic role, do Stardust. Please.
