Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior - Patreon Version

Comments

Jay Davis

Finished all my chores and errands now sitting here with my breakfast smoothy ready to watch Mad Max 2. I live JUST like the Road Warrior.

Tom Hess

Let's goooooo. The Road Warrior is the film Fury Road wishes it was.

pinkdino99

Vernon Wells who was also Bennett in Commando... "I'm not going to shoot you between the eyes John... I'M GONNA SHOOT YOU BETWEEN THE BALLS !"

Mike FromOz

Settling in, got my apocalypse burrito and poison free pepsi (Pepsi MAX!, or should that be "Pepsi, Max?"), this is going to be great. Edit: In regards to the insider info, if you see someone repeatedly watching "Death of Stalin", it's me. It's now a comfort YT version watch for me. I can watch that reaction any time and it's just great fun.

JediLounger

So Dog had a great life after the movie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXA1qy7OcuQ Also, While the Mad Max series definitely had an influence on first Wasteland game(the progenitor to Fallout) the movie A Boy and his Dog (1975) was a larger influence. That movie has been specifically cited by Brian Fargo and his team as the inspiration for the archetype of a lone waste-lander and his animal friend.

Jacob King

Huh? They’re both brilliant but if you can say one thing about George Miller’s filmography he’s not interested in repeating himself. Well, except for Happy Feet 2…

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

One of the best action films to date. There’s a museum dedicated to this movie over here in Broken Hill where it was filmed. Haven’t checked it out yet because of the 500km drive through the Outback and all but one of these days it’s on the list. The Analytics are always cool to hear about because who knows where someone around the world will see your videos. People on the other side of the globe like a good number of us here on PT for example. It’s one of the good parts of the interconnected world we’re in 🙂

Alexrandom

Personally I think "Fury Road" is his best work but Mad max 2 is a masterpiece! I also love happy feet 2. I only saw it recently and I expected to not enjoy it but gave it a chance since it's George Miller. I was completely amazed by how great it was ! The first one didn't hit me that hard.

Alexrandom

Now that you guys have seen Mad max 2 you should definitely check out Waterworld! I strongly advise to watch the Ulysses cut. It's a better version of the movie with more scenes, a better ending,... The movie has a bad reputation, and even though it's not as great as mad max, it's still pretty fun and some of the action scenes are crazy !

Vellu

The flying thing is an autogyro (autogiro) and it's a real thing. The top rotor is free spinning and only the rear propeller is powered producing forward thrust. Unlike helicopters the autogyro cannot takeoff or land vertically but requires a short runway. It Also cannot hover and must keep up airspeed to stay in air. So the movie took some liberties with it.

Odd Thomas

He WAS the mouth of Sauron, lol

Odd Thomas

2 was always going to be a hard act to follow so Thunderdome shifts into a slightly different gear. People didn't necessarily appreciate it at the time but it holds up better now imo. It also has one of the best 80s theme songs.

Grandalf

I must have watched this dozens of times as kid because I was remembering all the lines as they were being said! I also spent most of this watch thinking about what a great RPG adventure this would make. I've had the beginnings of a fantasy post-apocalyptic campaign setting living in my head for about 10 years now, hmmmm... :)

Vwlss Nvwls

I saw this in the theater, and had never heard of the movie "Mad Max", which is probably why it was called "The Road Warrior" in America. I do not think Mad Max was popular at all in America until after this movie.

Vwlss Nvwls

I had a dog who lived to almost 18 years old that was part Australian cattle dog (like in this movie) and part Chow. So he looked like Max's dog, but all black and thicker fur. I miss him every day. :(

Mike FromOz

Great reaction, I knew you'd both love it! The dog food he, the dog and the Gyrocaptain ate, 'Dinky-Di', is pronounced 'Dinkey-die' not 'Dinky-dee'. It's part of Australian vernacular, and it means it's a good thing, or quality. I only bring this up because as much as I love the Mad Max computer game, the game saying 'Dinky-dee' just rubs my fur the wrong way, considering it is supposed to be set in the remnants of what was Australia. As to George's question if people converted a lot of the same model cars into Mad Max versions after this movie? Yes, tons. In fact, the Ford XB Falcon GT Coupe which became 'The Last of the V8's' is a collector's piece, mainly because of this movie. Lots of car lover purists hate this because it makes buying the car so damn expensive, and they hate the mods done to them, whereas they would prefer to have the car kept in pristine original condition. I also love the head cannon of the Feral Kid being his kid from the first movie. It's a nice dream to have. The narrator in the film wasn't George Miller, but was Harold Baigent, who also has done acting roles, but nothing I can really remember. Fantastic reaction once again guys! I look forward to going Beyond Thunderdome next week!

REDR58

In terms of a nuclear apocalypse and when it happens in the movies, it does not seem to happen until after the events of “Mad Max 2”: Spoilers ho regarding Beyond Thunderdome: https://madmax.fandom.com/wiki/Timeline_of_events_(original_trilogy) We’ll get more into this when you see Thunderdome. Edit: Max Max 2 occurs about 3 years after the events of Max Mad (1979)

REDR58

A lot of people try to make the continuity of the Mel Gibson Trilogy work with the Fury Road and Furiosa movies, but I don’t see how that can work, even if you ignore the recasting of Mad Max. I prefer to keep the original Trilogy as its own continuity and the other two as their own. To me it’s just a retelling of the story and that’s fine.

Mike FromOz

Yeah, that's how it works in my head as well. Max is a part of oral tradition, folklore. His story gets retold from place to place, and each one incorporates his story into their own history.

Grandalf

I hope you're right. I was not a fan of Thunderdome back then, but honestly, it's probably just that I was such a fan of Road Warrior.

James W.

I can't speak to the general toxicity and lameness of internet commenters, even in curated spaces like Patreon, but I would hazard that some of the downvotes on stuff like Dune P2 or DP&Wolverine is because fans of those franchises love to nitpick. They get mad because they feel the reactor missed something they felt was meaningful because they "weren't paying attention" or whatever. I have been, and sometimes still am that guy I just learned to stfu. However, I will never forgive George and Simone for giving up on "The Expanse". /jk

Mastervodo

Fury Road is a MUCH better movie overall. Mad Max 2 is also good. But not near the quality of Fury Road, which is clearly #1.

Darin Foat

Harold Baigent actually has a brief scene on camera with Mel Gibson in another film that came out the same year as this - Gallipoli. There's a scene where Gibson's character and a friend get lost in the desert, and they are rescued by an elderly camel driver, played by Baigent.

Prof. Writhms

Please react to "Furiosa"! Even though it didn't do well in the box office, because some people were upset about "a Mad Max movie without Mad Max", it was still really good. In fact, the critic and audience reviews were just as good as Fury Road. Its George Miller dammit! See it! "Humongous" demands it. 😉

Darin Foat

Dog is my all time favorite movie dog. The whole little relationship between him and the Gyro Captain is hilarious. Apparently he and Bruce Spence actually got along very well, and it took some clever editing to make it look like he was being aggressive.

Tom Hess

Obligatory "Dude! George! That WAS the mouth of Sauron" comment.

Darin Foat

The big weird skull on the pole next to Wez is a horse skull. They're quite creepy looking, and because so much of a horse's snout and nose is made of soft tissue, the shape of the skull isn't immediately recognizable.

Mike FromOz

I can't remember enough of the movie to remember his part in it. I would love for George and Simone to watch it, it's so impactful.

John

The 24 hour data for TV shows can be skewed by those of us who binge them. Since I know Penguin has 8 episodes I might delay watching episode 7 to watch it with episode 8. Thanks for the data

beefjerkywizard

So does the intro make us, Backend cinebitches?

REDR58

I did not, especially like Dune Part Two but I watched and enjoyed the reaction all the way through!

REDR58

You can also drive one or two of these cars in Forza Horizon Three I believe which is set in Australia.

Mike FromOz

All this Mad Maxing is making me want to reinstall the game again. As ever, I'll choose the Last V8 as his car 😁

Tom Hess

I feel an obligation to recommend this video to all, Simone and George included: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1jZxJ8k3dg Carpenter Brut - Turbo Killer (Mad Max 2 edit by The 80's guy). Maybe something for your next Music Video reactions.

Jesse Coombs

Furiosa was really good! There's no way to replicate Fury Road, and Furiosa doesn't try, which is good. The storytelling structure is completely different.

JoeE

That’s definitely why it wasn’t mad max 2 in America. I had seen mad max on late night tv, dubbed by Americans, but that was one of the few places you could find it

JoeE

It may be public now, but the happy birthday song was copy written by the women who wrote it

Todd “Canuck” Schmuck

Yeah, it’s the main reason chain restaurants tend to write their own songs when the staff sing Happy Birthday to patrons(you get things like 🎵Happy happy birthday🎶 {clap clap clap} or similar things meant to sound completely different from the one song everyone knows).. even small businesses know that just one annoyed Karen might loose the copyright police on them otherwise.

Todd “Canuck” Schmuck

I do kinda like the fan theory that the feral kid grows up to be Tom Hardy’s hardly speaking character from Fury road(who doesn’t refer to himself as Max until the end, like he’s helping to keep the legend/myth of The Road Warrior alive once he feels he’s done something worthy). It sorts out the time issue with Fury Road being decades after the collapse.

djKENTO

Just to get ahead of it now… Bruce Spence who plays the pilot is in the next film, the characters are similar, they are not the same character tho. Just so you’re aware.

REDR58

The autogyro features the Playboy centerfold of Karen Price, Miss January 1981, attached to the rear stabilizer/rudder as well as other photographs/centerfolds on other parts of the aircraft. A lot of Humungus’ men are either wearing police uniforms and are presumably former police / Main Force Patrol from the first movie. Not that they are the same characters but possibly part of the same or similar organization. There is at least one police car in the gang. You may not have noticed but in the background you can hear Humungus giving orders to his “Smegma crazies” and “Gayboy berserkers.” This is apparent if you have the subtitles on. This is probably related to the fact that Wez is in a same sex relationship. Max does indeed have the same leg injury from the first movie movie and the braces are made from pickup tailgate hinges. Part of his costume is a remnant of his uniform from the first movie: https://madmaxcostumes.com/mad-max-2-the-roadwarrior/ Crossbows/bows are useful because the bolts and arrows can be recovered unlike bullets. Virginia Hey who plays the “Warrior Woman” in the movie was also in the series Farscape but the role required her to keep her head and eyebrows shaved and lots of makeup so she eventually left the show. Most of the people are wearing athletic pads and some masks. Max Fairchild (1946 ‑ 2017) who was tied to the front of Humungous’ car and yells that he comes in peace also played the mentally handicapped Benno who was with elderly woman May (with leg braces of her own) in Mad Max. Humungus’ eyes’ irises appear to be completely black. His gun case has a prominent Nazi SS Totenkopf badge in it (deaths head/skull and crossbones) as well as Australian and British military insignia. Swedish actor and weightlifter Kjell Nilsson portrays Humungus. It’s funny that Max asks for 5 gallons of diesel and some gasoline as he’s carrying 20 gallons worth of cans total (4 cans of 5 gallons each) Max buried his wife and child at the start of the movie. You can see crosses over the graves just as the flashback footage is ending. The two prisoners strapped to the front of Humungus’ car were still alive before it crashed into the back of the tanker. Arkie Whiteley who played the young girl who almost ran away with The Gyro Captain sadly died at age 37 from cancer in 2001. George the flashbacks in Fury Road really have nothing to do with the Mel Gibson trilogy. I maintain that the Gibson movies are a different continuity than Fury Road and Furiosa. Remember he loses his Interceptor early on in Fury Road after first losing it here. The disabled mechanic even calls his car a “piece of history” and the “last of the V8s” in Mad Max 2. It cannot be the same car as seen in Fury Road. Two different Max characters.

mike moake

I had a buddy in high school that snacked on milk bones.

Simone's Coconut Squire

Your next "trailer" needs to be for an action movie that instead of the Hero and the "guy in the chair", it's just two "guys in the chair" giving each other directions.

Max Krause

Fallout's Raider Punk aesthetics were heavily influenced by the Mad Max gangs. And while "A Boy and his Dog" is "officially" the movie that coined the lone wasteland wanderer with his animal companion trope of Fallout, Fallout 1 has a direct Mad Max homage: When the Vault Dweller meets Dogmeat, he is told this about his former owner: "Oh, the guy was tall, dark-haired with a little graying around the edges. He was dressed all in black leather, like that's a good idea in the desert, and carried a shotgun." You can recruit Dogmeat as a follower by equiping a leather jacket, that looks like Max's jacket in this movie. Fallout 3 and NV also took Max's leather jacket as inspiration for the leather armour.

Luc Zettwoog

Oh my god I'm dead !!!! I just wanted to write a comment to inform Georges and Simone that the helicopter guy is the actor who plays the mouth of sauron, but I figured I'd wait to watch the whole reaction and the fact that Georges just happened to say “Okay mouth of Sauron” at 1:10:10 probably not knowing it's the same actor made me die with laughter!!!!

PIG

What a great fucking movie. The earliest movie I can remember growing up in the 80s in the States. Just insane and wild. Love it.

Amelie W

Unfortunately no, none of these cool cars would be street legal in any country that has laws against driving things that can potentially distract other drivers. If you can't get a customized license plate to say anything you want, you're out of luck. But on the other hand, yes, there are still people making their cars like that. You can google "Wasteland Weekend" to see something sort of like Burning Man, but instead of sex, drugs and rock & roll they have Mad Max. A cartoonist I like got married there by the real world Lord Humongus. Not the actor, just this guy who made looking like Lord Humongus into his lifestyle. And you'd think Miller learned his lesson here about dangerous stunts with big trucks. in Fury Road, the climactic scene where Nux flips the war rig was not shot without problems. Something like "Oh, that stunt didn't work like we thought and I killed the driver. Wait, okay he made it even though nobody really knows how, that was lucky."

Marylou inProgress

On rewatching this, I really like how well it works as a kind of neo Western. Basically as I understand it, in a typical Western there's the civilized world, and there's the outlaw world, and the protagonist is someone who kind of has one foot in each world. And I think Max totally fits that bill. He's not a monster, but he also doesn't do a single altruistic thing in the whole movie. Honestly it's wild how much his character doesn't change through the whole thing. I think it's really interesting how the gyro captain gets the more typical hero journey even though he's a secondary character. It's actually really sweet to me how he goes from an opportunist to a genuinely good guy. It seems like the kindness of others rubs off very easily on him, and he becomes way more of a whole person as soon as circumstances allow it. And somehow that touched me way more coming from a secondary character. Something about seeing how kindness can flourish even when the main story is so bleak. Maybe I'm reaching a little because I'm sappy like that xD but I really enjoyed that arc. Also omg yes I think you would love Furiosa!! Fury road definitely has the best action, but imo Furiosa has by far the most fully realized version of the wasteland.

REDR58

Hah, in some US states you can drive stuff that makes these cars look like they are fresh from the factory. All depends where you are.

howtocookazombie (Stan)

Humongous looks similar like Fred from the first movie, the buffed guy with the scarf, who walked always half-naked and tried to convince Max not to leave the police. I don't remember what happened to him in the first movie, but it would be fun, if he became Humongous, the leader of the villains in the second movie.

FranciscoGios

This one is my favorite of the 3 Mad Maxs films, it made me look for more post-apocalyptic films I can find during my teens and young adult years. Jean-Claude Van Damme made one called CYBORG from 1989, the poster of it is one of my favorites as well.

REDR58

That is my biggest complaint of Thunderdome! They could have simply made him play the same character, and he almost is, but then again there are just enough differences with his appearance that I can handwave it away. Oh well, I’ll save more about that when for we get there.

SpankTheMonk

Everyone commenting about Virginia Hey and Farscape I salute you! I think both George and Simone would like it since it combines so many great science fiction ideas in a fun Jim Henson twist. Live long and prosper everyone 🖖

SpankTheMonk

Yeah I was like what! Did George know that or is this some kind of Canadian super power 😅

sarCC

If you ARE planning on rewatching Fury Road again, make sure to watch FURIOSA first, as it is a prequel and it really, REALLY feels a like a movie that was supposed to be made/released before Fury Road. It's so great.

REDR58

Forgot to mention before but "Kennedy Miller" refers to Byron Kennedy and George Miller. Kennedy was the co-creator of the Max Max movies and produced Max Max and Mad Max 2 but died at age 33 in 1983 due to a helicopter crash. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome was dedicated to him.

SpankTheMonk

That is so sad to hear. Thanks for brining up Kennedy's part in creating the films.

WayneC

Yes, people do make replicas of the "Last of the V8 Interceptors". Some as far away as the UK and USA. Some with actual Ford Falcon coupes, some with similar looking cars. The Falcon Coupe was introduced with the XA model in 1972, the facelifted XB model, which was the basis of the Mad Max Inteceptor, from 1973, and the final version, the XC, from 1976 to 1979. They also have quite a bit of racing heritage, racing in the Australian Touring Car Championship, and the biggest Australian domestic race - the Bathurst 1000 (prior to metrification in 1973). The Bathurst 1000 was won 3 times by Falcon Coupes - 1973, 1974 and 1977, the last 2 by Canadian driver Allan Moffat. These were, basically, at the end of Australia's muscle car era.

HansD

Thirded, if that's a word. Definitely watch Furiosa before re-watching Fury Road. Perhaps make it a Sunday double feature?

Gary Fixler

George: "Patrons, Road Warrior, 1981, one-hour, thirty-five minutes, and thirty seconds..." Me: "Crap! Mine's one-hour, thirty-five minutes, and twenty-nine seconds. Sigh... Another one I can't watch."

Matthew Blackwood

I think Fury Road feels complete without Furiosa. But Furiosa screams for a Fury Road rewatch when you finish so I definitely recommend it!

Matthew Blackwood

Why doesn’t Simone try to get George to watch Buffy?? It’s so good!!!

Logan Kerlee

I enjoyed this movie FAR LESS than the original when I first watched it. Hoping that this watch makes me think otherwise. LMAO - GEORGE!! You don't make jokes like that! xD hahahahaha, wow! I love that the music was made by Brian May!! I love that doggo too, Simone! :) People totally modded their cars to resemble these. I'm not sure if Happy Birthday's copywritten but with how often I've heard it on movie/shows I'm thinking it's not. <3 Australian cattle dogs are top notch puppers, 100%! I had one that lived for 13 years. He was so much fun and he made me feel so happy! Bart was the best doggo. :D lol, that girl does look like a Who! It'd likely depend on where you were George. Okay, just finished the movie and turns out that I did enjoy this movie! Still though, I prefer the first over this. The boy was pretty cool! Really liked how his future was explained. :) EXIT MUSIC - hahahahaha See - yeah, I'm aok with them expecting us to do homework. Poor doggo!! <3 I'm very happy that he had a home afterword! Makes me very happy. :) No idea if that's a rule or not but whoa.. It's awesome that The Interceptor lived! :) I 100% buy that Terminator 1/2 was inspired by this. Glad that you're expecting over the top. You won't be disappointed! :P

Gary Fixler

Bruce Spence (the guy with the snake and the helicopter) also played Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander in Legend of the Seeker, and I think Simone would enjoy that show. It's kind of like a Buffy/Angel/Xena level of magic and not-too-dangerous or scary bad guy stuff, and it's full of wizards and spells, and tough, magical fighter chicks.

Logan Nelson

If you have read the books, it's a tough watch. But I'll definitely give you the Xena/Hercules vibes...

Logan Nelson

It's one of those "huge commitment" shows... I think it went over 100 episodes...lol

Old School Drew

My wife tried a piece of rawhide for $50 it was very salty and not worth it
