Simone's reaction to the end of e.4 makes me worry that her head might explode for the finale. Will they be able to go straight back to BCS? 🧇🎉🤯

cincassette

I'm already looking forward to next Tuesday... And I absolutely can't wait for you guys to watch the final three episodes of S1 in 2 weeks!!!

Garrett Mazzuca

Worth noting that Petey said, "WHAT IF the cost of that freedom meant that you killed people for 8 hours a day?" He's just conveying that they could be doing the most horrible things during the work day and not know it. Also, Mark said "Quitting would effectively end your life..." so that's enough reason for some not to want to fight back. Turning off the Severance chip is basically death for the innie.

cincassette

yeah, in episode 2 Petey tells Mark that he still has no idea what they actually do down there.

Stugotz

Honestly, without knowing about what goes on, I would be totally tempted to do this procedure for my job. I just wish I could choose when i switch over because one of the things I'd love to remove from my day is my 1 hour commute in rush hour traffic!

VinnyAhhh

Re: the ending conversation on sending a message to your outie — back when season 1 was airing the subreddit dedicated to discussing the show had a top voted post for a while that was something along the lines of "why doesn't Helly just poop her pants before going up the elevator?"

Cinebinge

hahahah well it may not convince her outie but at least its a good revenge. which may lead to ever escalating revenge against herself? deliberately coming to work drunk, leaving work with a near to busting bladder, sticking finger down her throat a second before the barrier.

REDR58

Oh there are contingencies for all that…. Or are there?

8bitAndy

We get so little time outside of work on a workday to actually live our lives, I can't imagine opting in to basically erase 5/7ths of all my days from now til retirement. Old age would arrive in a blink. I don't see how that would be appealing to anyone.

8bitAndy

What was it, a 3 year gap between S1 and S2? I think they'll be fine.

this can happen, especially if you use gmail, as the delete button is next to the "report spam" buttom. i've occasionally marked patreon emails as spam too when clicking delete too fast. check if you have patreon marked as such, or you can also just white list patreon manually

Oh, I'm loving all the theories you both are getting into haha It is so fun to see your brains trying to decipher the details on this one. I found really interesting how they combine a lot of religious innuendoes with corporate BS and behavior into one mindset of weirdness and uneasy. Also, you mentioned the melody being familiar and I don't know why (I don't have a musical brain) but it does sound like a more sad and creepy version of the piano song of the movie Up, from Pixar.

Jeff I.

I like how the show frequently has a piano playing variations of the main melody from the intro theme. Reminds me of how Succession manages to use the melody from its intro theme (also played on a piano) as a regular part of the soundtrack during episodes, but it never feels overused.

The control over the innies seem to completely hinge on the fact that they are effectively children who's whole existence is the svr'd floor, Mark being only 2 years old, Helly only a few days. And their handlers treat them as such, with the incentives being like treats for kids for good behavior. You can do a lot to indoctrinate someone like that who doesn't know any better. Also, I love the whole "lore" between the departments, like the talk about the coup and murdering each other. It again points to the fact that the svr'd floor is their whole reality, and they have no frame of reference about what is normal and what is not, while we stare on in disbelief from outside.

Boop

George asking “Why Mark?” is the question he’s going to be asking for the next 3 months lol

Jimmy Olofsson

I don't know if George's mind went to the same place as mine but when he said "That music sounds familiar" I thought that particular segment of the Severance music sounded similar to the James Bond theme (if it was slowed down and played on piano) :)

matan ron

I think severance is still viewed as a controversial procedure in the show's world. Lumon is a mega corporation but it seems most of the poeple who work for them are'nt severed, only a relatively small group of peaple are working on the severd floor. I think any one of the severed has his own deep and messed reason to go through the procedure. We see that for Mark it's a way to deal with his grief over his dead wife.

matan ron

I think you have to consider that even if you manage to leave the floor it dose'nt realy do you any good, at least not for the innie, because he has no awareness outside of the severed floor. Thats why Mark said (in the first episode, i think) that leaving the floor and not coming back is basicaly equivalent to dying for an innie. I don't think Petey realy escaped. His outie just quit. It's also my understanding that he had started the reintegration procedure before he left lumon. As long as you don't believe that reintegration is possible there can be no escape from this situation because the innie and outie cannot coexist together, at most they can share a body and switch between. And even if reintegration actualy work you might be a completely different person after since you have to stitch two personalities together.

In episode 3: “We must be cut to heal.” Remember that phrase. The newscast mentioned the weather in “Ganz” which is where Mark Scout said he was from. You guys haven’t seemed to recognize him so far, but Zach Cherry who plays Dylan G. portrays “Klev” in the MCU, appearing in Spider-Man Homecoming and Shang-Chi: https://youtube.com/shorts/w9Ev80QNs6U?si=hW8AD7CRoOFdYPi0 https://youtu.be/C5bbKa6SR5A?si=zvuWykDUVSpLAg4Z When Mark Scout drove at night and came across Petey at the convenience store, there is a brief shot of Mark’s car’s license plate and while a bit blurry, there are some words in Latin on the bottom of the plate: “Remedium Hominibus" which means “A cure, for mankind." Here is a photo of the car from the episode: https://pics.imcdb.org/17272/2022-08-26_05h29_41.jpg Also note the portrait of Kier between the numbers/letters on the plate. Speaking of the cars in the show, take note of how old they all seem to be. Mrs. Selvig’s car is a 1981 Volkswagen Rabbit. Mark Scout’s car is a 1995 Volvo 960 and so far appears to be the newest car shown. Forgot to mention during episode 1, but Mark Scout’s drivers license in his locker tray has a date of “1976” (birth year…Adam Scott was also born in 1976) and “2020” possibly the issue date or expiry date of the license. George, I highly recommend to use subtitles. It’s not a cheat to hear quiet or background dialogue. A lot of it is very important and adds detail you might need, or at least texture. In episode 4: Notice that the article that Mark Scout sees on his phone is from the “Kier Chronicle.” When Irving B. walks with Burt G. to transport the pairings, on the cart is a prominent painting of Kier Eagen wearing a Union Civil War uniform. The US Civil War ended in 1865 and Lumon was founded in 1866. Simone, so far Irving B. is using a “Mid-Atlantic” (as in the east coast of the US) or a slightly affected 1930s-1950s “Transatlantic” accent similar to Katherine Hepburn.

Inkpendude

I was thinking of Succesion but they haven't seen that show I think

jellybrigades

I don’t know if they talk about this later on, but it’s kinda hard to fight against abnormal or abusive behavior when you don’t recognize it as odd or abusive. Innies are literally born on the conference table with no memories of their life. Lumon is their home.

REDR58

It should also be mentioned that Helly wasn’t sure what houses look like. Remember that she asked about the houses when she saw the map hidden behind the photograph that Mark S. found. So far to this point it is unclear how aware they are of what the outside world is like. Dylan G. knows what bodybuilding contests are like, but Helly is unsure what real houses look like? Very interesting…

Christian Rennie

First this is my first time watch of this show. That being said I totally agree with Simone that The Board can easily be someone we already know (even the main character) and furthermore, how many times can you be severed.... how many alternates can there be? It seems to be activated by location or area. So the outtie the third, the innie can be the second, and the prime can be the first. How bout if the main character is the board and he originated inside, severed to the outside and his Outtie wanted to get severed, so they made this elaborate area just for them. Or any combination of innie, outie, and prime. The main boss lady could be severed the other direction, too. Perhaps she was severed from the inside to the work area and the outside. There people could be onions, right?

Brien

Chuckie Finster had an outie. If ya know, ya know!

Kevin

You guys have a lot of questions about why the severed employees accept the conditions that they are given. But you have to understand this is the only life they know. I think your framing comes from perspective, perspective they don't have. Maybe at first their natural instinct is to fight it, but over time they are molded to it because this is what they know. This is what work is. The break room is what punishment is. Their acceptance of it seems stranger to us than it does to them. And the desire to quit soon becomes overtaken with the realization that this means they effectively die, which people naturally fight against. While they have the same physiology as their "outie", their psychology, lived experience, and indeed all memory forming who they are and what they accept changes who they are on the inside into two different people.

RabidMango

I was honestly coming up with new theories about this show based on the audio in these reactions before I realized it was Simone's cat. And I'm current on the show. I have a lot of answers. But I also have a lot of questions. This is my favorite show on TV currently.

michael murray

I'm assuming it was probably just an early posting error on your end, but i haven't seen anyone else mention it so just flagging in case it was a patreon bug - i watched these reactions last week; got an email notification on the 20th with the youtube link. The patreon post was unavailable the next day but the video was still accessible from the email

REDR58

George, I forgot to mention, but you asked at the end of the reaction what would happen if somebody on the outside suddenly showed up pregnant and didn’t understand what happened? That was actually addressed during that interview with Natalie on the TV that Mark was watching. There was apparently a speculation that that had happened. But Natalie denied it.

mojo shivers

I'm a little ahead now of where you guys are--four episodes into season two--but I remember thinking after episode four on how Helly R.'s attempt to end it was just too simple. They have so much surveillance in just the hallways and rooms, that they have to have round-the-clock coverage on that elevator and other points of entrance/exiting the floor. I mean--she was desperate, but I was thinking she needed to ascertain where the blind spots are before attempting that kind of act. She might as well as have down it in front of the security office itself if she wanted to fail in the attempt.

Jeff I.

Sorry, but I just find your use of "a little ahead" funny, since you're ten episodes ahead of them on a series that only has 19 episodes so far. ;-)

mojo shivers

Lol I know, but last week I was only on Season 1 Episode 6. It doesn’t feel like I watched almost an entire season ahead. I guess it’s because I only did like an episode a day that it snuck up on me.

Paul Davey

I'm only at the beginning of this watch and also a newbie to the show myself so sorry if this gets mentioned "later" but my theory: the whole city are in on it and working for the company, like there's a Truman Show thing happening here.

Amelie W

I watch everything I can with subtitles, and my basic assumption is I still miss half of everything I'm supposed to hear. Subs giving away "too much" information would be a new one. Non-compliance techniques I'd be considering at Helly's stage of her career: Going back up the elevator first thing in the morning and bonk my head against the wall until something happens. Refusing to work. Closing my eyes instead of reading the "compunction statement." Demand to know why they want me to "mean it" and what that means. Lie down on the floor and refusing to eat, speak or move. But that's me with the prior experience I have from fighting bullies. The show can justify a lot by having the innies not know about whatever they need to not know about. By default they don't seem to have any concept of even responding impolitely when the bosses address them politely, but still Helly's impulsive response to her oppression is active, violent resistance, escalating as far as she possibly can. You wonder where she could get that from. Is it some indelible particle of self that survives the transition, or some blurred line between the generalized knowledge you do remember and how you used to apply that to yourself? Anyway, fun fact, if you want to move to Antarctica they inform you that being locked in for months on a research station with a handful of other people is a very ineffective way to avoid having to deal with a breakup or death in the family. Imagine if they'd told Mark that. (Of course they wouldn't, like any other cult, Lumon prefers to enlist new recruits when they're at their most lost and vulnerable.) Also, everyone I've heard from who's seen the show agrees the concept of severance is ethically troubling, but they're often not sure why. Here's a thought: In exchange for eight hours a day (if you feel like it), you get a person who you don't have to think of as a separate person with their own free will, who you can force to work to make money for you, who has no freedom of movement, who you can freely intimidate and bully and subject to any arbitrary and cruel punishments you like if they get ideas above their station. That's slavery. Lumon is to blame for making it sound cool and normal with their propaganda, sure, they're a basic evil corporation with far too much power that lies about everything, but the outies are also villains.

Jacob King

So far, we’ve only seen three unsevered employees on the floor. Grainger is taking the chip up to diagnostics, Cobel is focused on Mark’s wellness session, so it would need to be Milchick and he needs to be covering the whole floor so it would be very lucky for him to see Helly in time.

Joseph Schiller

I get a "Religious Cave Johnson and Aperture Science (Portal 2)" Feel about this show so far

Jacob King

George: Of the four tempers I assume you meant frolic was the only positive one. It’s worth considering if frolic actually is positive - frolic implies carelessness. The tempers are tamed by the nine virtues, the things Cobel was reciting before deciding to go to the funeral. Simone: Assuming this channel lasts another fifty years you’ll eventually get to an Australian film called Sleeping Beauty (2011). You do not want to watch this movie.

This show is really good. The whole bifurcation of the ego/id is a really cool concept. I really thought the same as George with Helly's action at the end of the episode. I thought she was going to kick the button to start the bifurcation elevator so the main id would gain control of the ego while being hanged. That could still happen the way it cut. Crazy that she is basically at war with her own ego or alter ego, an internal struggle made physical. I was pretty sure from the start once it was apparent that the bifurcation of the ego was happening there would be underlying things that would be retained by sub layers of the consciousness. If you look at a Jungian psychological model there are layers which is what I'm referencing. And it seems like only that ego layer is being affected so the subconscious, shadow etc. would still remain intact and leak through (the use of the candle being an example). Fascinating. I don't trust the Walken character now. That door that Irving opened were all O & D people, I think Felicia was one of them. He blatantly lied ( or perhaps he's not aware but I am suspicious) earlier in the episode when Irving asked how they keep up with it all. This also makes me think there are more departments/experiments that we don't know about. The chip must be doing more than just the bifurcation too As I would assume that what's on the computer screen is not "real" as in they see something different and we see what they see. Which also makes me think the work isn't really important despite the reference of a quota by Ms. Cobel as there is very little "work" being done. Loved the fact that Mark hinted at the branching of his ego with his clay model at the end. And again makes me think there could be just more than two branches and there ego's could be bifurcated multiple times triggered by spatial awareness. Glad I've waited on this. Been a lot of fun watching along and theorizing.

Simon Pegged Me

Flashing back to Mark saying, "Seems like you're starting to get the hang of stuff here" before cutting to Helly hanging herself in the elevator gets the chef's kiss from dark humor aficionados like me. (George, you can insert "gallows humor" for "dark humor.") I worked in a place that made the Severance procedure appealing. It was a low-salary job in which 60-hour work weeks were the norm. The corporate culture fostered intense competition amongst the entry levels for attention and recognition that would determine who would get the associate's position when but mostly if it became available 5 years down the road. When I wasn't working, I was thinking about working—regretting the things I'd done that day and dreading what I was going to have to do tomorrow. To unleash a remorseless competitive monster that I hated into the workplace for just 8 hours in exchange for 16 hours away from work with the person I was and loved, completely oblivious to and unaffected by what I'd done in that other life... O Severance, Severance! Where were thou, Severance. Anyway, I didn't last long there. Finally, is it possible they're actually working on themselves at Lumen, that they're removing their weaknesses and perfecting themselves as workers? Then, one day, they'll go down the elevator and Lumen won't switch them to their outie selves; Lumen will, instead, activate their modified chips, and let their perfect innies replace them in the real world. It fits the religious motif: they are baptized at Lumen and resurrected as cleansed souls. I also like the play on the name Lumen = Lieu (in place of) men. It's a stretch, I know, but...

Brien

You two would love John Turturro in Rounders. His on screen chemistry with the lead (Matt Damon) is amazing! Also starring Edward Norton and John Malkovich. (This is my way of begging you guys to watch Rounders Haha)

akaTheBAY-AY-RON

As of late last week I'm seeing posts related to this show (watching it now for the first time as yall do) that I must have paid no mind to in the past seeing as I'd have no idea what they were referencing but now knowing what an "innie" and and "outtie" are, they're hilarious. Some will be memes, like one that comes to mind is a person at an EDM concert and they look FFFFFFUCKEDDDD up LOL and the text is like "Someone's innie is going to be late tomorrow" and others will be pictures of Severance-themed shirts that will just have slogans on them like "Your innie is the type of person to clap when the plane lands." In fact, most shirts I've seen that are just bashing other people's innies/outties and I kind of want one LOL

gfixler

My favorite part was when it went quiet so we could hear the board on the little speaker box, and also Simone's cat purring away. I thought for a second that the board was a cat.

gfixler

Listening to all of their thoughts after the episodes, I realized severance wouldn't be enough, because I live and work in LA, where we have some of the worst commutes there are. The fact that they have to go to work before it kicks in, and then it turns off before they have to drive home... not enough. I need it to kick in before I wake up, and only turn off after I'm back home. I don't want to suffer through morning routines or traffic. My worst ever was a 2.5-hour commute each way, and I worked there for 1.5 years. Granted, I just kept going in later and later, until I was arriving after lunch, and leaving late at night, to reduce that time—and they just let me, because they knew my drive was so horrible—but still...

Alexrandom

I hope Simone doesn't take this the wrong way, I feel like an ass for mentioning it but I can't keep my mouth shut anymore 😾 I love cats ! 😻 But with my sound system your cat bumping in the mic or even purring too close makes me freaking jump ! 🙀 If you could try maybe having the microphone a bit further up it would be great for my nerves 😸 Love you even if you don't! (move it I mean) Thanks guys 😺

joejud1017

Rickens book sounds like a collection of fortune cookies.

Silver Linings Starman

I don't know if it's the same song, but the one George recognized sounds like the dream sequence song at the end of "In Bruges"

Tay Schumaker

Theories are fine, and a fun part of this show. But I’ve seen a lot of reaction channels spend so much time trying to figure everything out that they forget to just watch the show. Edit: yeah you guys are definitely spiraling into constantly questioning everything.

Tee Pee

The "innies" are basically "born" when they wake them up on the table. So you have to think of them as emotionally immature & without a fully developed moral compass. They don't fight back because they don't really know what is "normal", if that makes sense. Look at the way Irving reacts to his feelings for Burt. It's like a young teenager & his first crush.

D. T. Nelson

Woe=Sadness Frolic=Joy Dread=Fear Malice=Hate/Anger The numbers they are deleting on their screens so far correspond to Dread, but they told Helly that the numbers don't always relate to a "scary" feeling, so I'm guessing that their work relates to the four tempers. Perhaps the severence implants also provide some sort of control over those who have it, and either they are messing with, if not their own minds, they are messing with the other's minds.

m

binaural_knock_at_the_door.ogg

K!ll Molli

That Natalie character gives me Allison Mack vibes lol. That "break room" they were doing on Helly reminded me of a documentary about Scientology. They had a device that was similar to what they were doing to Helly. I'm pretty sure Scientology was the inspiration for Lumon. I just figured Irv and Burt hit off as friends with their fascination for Art. Like two people having the same taste in music or both sports fans. They have really good writers.

mhan00

I think the implication is that innie Mark knows how fucked up the situation is. He's telling Innie Hellie these things because I think he personally experienced them. Remember, he tells her in the first episode that he threatened to hunt down and kill the voice that woke him up when he was the one sprawled out on the conference table. He took a while to "assimilate". And it is also worth remembering that the innies have no context for what is normal and not. Pretty much everything they know is what they get told by Lumon while they're at work.
