One of the few movies I consider to be “perfect.” The way it subverts all the various western tropes is so good. The sheriff is the villain, the outlaw is the protagonist, you see the “hero” go from being a good, moral, stand up guy to a drunken killer. The movie condemns the type of violence generally celebrated in westerns, you see people struggle with the weight of killing others. Its just a great film and the performances are off the charts. One of my top 10 all time.

Would it be proper to say The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly would be "young" Clint Eastwood or younger? Clint was in a TV show that had a theme song which The Blues Brothers sang in their movie, Rawhide...that would be the youngest I ever saw Clint Eastwood, unless you count Clint from Back to the Future 3.

Mike Medaugh

Good question, Who is the bad guy? An argument could be made that they all are bad guys.

George: Client Eastwood was born in 1930 and even though he acted in some bit roles in the mid-1950s. his first 3 big Western movies were a trilogy in 1964-1966: A Fist Full of Dollars, A Few Dollars More, and The Good The Bad and the Ugly when he was in his mid-30s. His Dirty Harry movies were in 1971 and 1973 when he was in he in his early 40s...so that is as young as you will se him. Morgan Freeman was born in 1937 and his breakout roles were in 1989-early 1990s when he was already in his 50s. Before that he was actually on children's TV shows and soap operas in the late 1970s and 1980s

Simone: The actor portraying the biographer was in Star Trek TNG

Wackadoodle Simone and Over- Analytic George. Not scary Western nicknames, but seems appropriate.

2026-09-05 05:00 One quite subtle thing about the movie: Will always respondd pretty vaguely, "I guess so", "maybe",... but in the end, when Little Bill says "see you in hell", he just responds with "Yeah"

I highly recommend the Japanese 2013 version starring Ken Watanabe. It too is fantastic.

Mike FromOz

Yeah, no tough guy "Not if I see you first". Nope, just a recognition that his sins weigh him down.

Ampersander7

Another youngish Eastwood film is Where Eagles Dare. It's not like Unforgiven. I think they kill more Nazis than Wolfenstein.

Joe Concepts

True. The "good guys" in this movie are assassins-for-hire. And whatever they say about those guys deserving it, they are obviously taking the job just for the money. Meanwhile, Little Bill while trying to keep the peace is unnecessarily cruel. Beating up the unarmed Duck of Death when he could've arrested him, and then basically torturing Ned into a confession.

Joe Concepts

Why are very wrong predictions so entertaining? Like kind-faced Gene Hackman on the poster. :)

Clint Eastwood WAS in a Western musical!

Dylan Bollinger

I don’t recall if you two have done Crimson Tide but definitely should if not

Anthony Michaels

One of the best ever. Better than any movie made in modern Hollywood. One thing not picked up here was how sad the cut up prostitute was to see her “revenge.” She was touched by the offer of a horse and would have been happier without the violence.

Mark Conrath

Clint Eastwood’s transition was phenomenal. His character from the beginning to the end of the movie.

Damian

You sir are correct. Definitely in my perfect films list, too. Couldn’t wait for this reaction.

Damian

It’s a beautiful film, amazing performances, and I love how it takes its time resulting in an old-school western with a modern take (modern-ish, released in 1992, man, I’m old). I mean, they talk about their feelings!?! Some amazing lines “It’s a hell of a thing killing a man. Take away all he’s got and all he’s ever gonna have.” Always made me think. And “we all have it coming, kid” is just wonderful. I know George half-jokingly mentioned never seeing a young Clint Eastwood, but for the role, and the body of work, it’s just leads to amazing casting. Love this film - and love the reaction, although some of your predictions were…interesting.

Peter Dillard

In the 'spaghetti' westerns (Fistful of Dollars, For A Few Dollars More & The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly) you'll see a young Clint.

Peter Dillard

There's no issue with the accuracy of the types of guns they were using. It's harder than most people think to hit a target with a handgun that's not close much less moving and that's without the nerves from being shot at.

thomas king

Greatest ending to a movie ever

Stevtrek

Sometimes, just sometimes, the movie everyone is encouraging you to see is actually a fantastic, important, amazing film... sometimes.

Guy-on-Couch

it's a hell of a thing killing a man....

Happy Hanukkah

What?! Those Japanese think that they can appropriate a Western and successfully remake it as a Japanese period piece? The presumption!!!

Unforgiven is such a great post-modern Western that commentates and subverts the genre by having THE main central creative icon (Eastwood) play such a contemplative damaged figure. It very much contextualizes a lot of the fun violence of Eastwood’s prior westerns into being emotionally heavy. Definitely would recommend more Eastwood films but also Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman (2019). It very much is a commentary on the gangster genre (the same way Unforgiven is) and utilizes a lot of those main actors (De Niro, Pesci, Pacino) to play almost against their cultural perceptions and infuses a lot of emotional and dramatic heft to that genre. The last hour is essentially the most radically stark depressing perspective of what happens after those classic gangster films we watch like Goodfellas or Casino—it follows those characters to a sad and lonely conclusion. Incredible film.

Mark McConnell

Also, I officially don’t like the thumbnail. Anyone who would do that to our girl? Idk, ponies wouldn’t do. They would need to be killed, brought back to life and then killed again, painfully, for at least, what, 20 years.

Mark McConnell

The barroom scene at the end. Terrifying. Never loses its power no matter how many times you see it.

wertnez

I agree. One of the best scenes ever.

Cherno Alpha

I've always loved the odd angle take that this is actually a love story, told entirely through the opening and ending text scrawl

Benjamin Herrera

Yall definitely have to check out The Dollars Trilogy with Clint Eastwood.. I'm a huge huge fan of Spaghetti Westerns 💜

James Falato

Gene Hackman didn't tell Clint Easwood about "Unforgiven"... It seems in the 1970s Francis Ford Coppolo had the Rights, but didn't do it... The script landed in Clint Eastwood's hands, but he "sat on it" for years before Filming it... As I've heard/read online, Clint Eastwood didn't change hardly any of the script He was given, something almost never done let alone a script that was around since the '70s... And It Won the Best Picture Oscar, so if it's true it shows Clint Eastwood knew when to NOT Rewrite...

Happy Hanukkah

A man's got to know his limitations.

The ending of a few dollars more is so good

alvah vrenon

Paint Your Wagon? I love that movie. Such a bazaar way to destroy a town tho, lol

BoredLittleLady

The thumbnail reminds me of Meryl Streep in Little Women.
