The sequels aren't worth watching, but the 2021 reboot is actually really good

regarding Canadians and French learning in school, while it is one of our official languages and schools do teach them, most Canadians dont speak French at all, especially in the west coast where its as low as 2%. Quebec is the one province that is 85-90% French speaking. everywhere else is single digit percentage.

Guillaume Huet_rennibou

Interesting intro talk. As a french who recently visited west canada for three weeks, i felt really well accepted there despite of my 'outrageous" french accent. Honestly, I have had plans for quite a while to move to Canada for a few years. (That's one of the reasons why i visited, and also why I spend so much time listening to west canada speakers. In order to keep my english alive). But I've never considered moving to east Canada, in big part because I know that there is this language issue with french that creates stupid tensions and that i find saddening

Jay

Simone's cat purring over the Candyman legend:)

PeppermintWizardOfAus

RIP to the legend Tony Todd who gives probably his most iconic performance here, hopefully you guys continue with the 2021 sequel because it’s fantastic also

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Yeah Tony Todd’s voice works “that way” for this dude too, not gonna lie haha. RIP to a legend. This movie’s a classic and still holds up! Also Virginia Madsen does a great job in this and she is wonderful in “Sideways” (arguably my favourite movie) which is also recommended. Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church are immaculate.

PIG

One my favorite horrors!!! I just need good acting, music, and story as if it was a quality drama and it makes it go so far.

Simone's Coconut Squire

"Hey everyone, I'm Simone, this is George, this is where if you piss us off, I'll drop trou and piss on your feet."

PIG

Was just about to write that :) He makes a great Klingon.

Emily G

You guys should watch The Brothers Grimm (2005) for some slight spooky vibes and Heath Ledger

Bref, si vous souhaitez réagir à un excellent film français, je vous recommande vivement "La vie d'Adèle". Il a remporté la Palme d'or en 2013 et a propulsé les carrières d'Adèle Exarchopoulos et de Léa Seydoux.

PIG

Oh! Last thing: the music is by the great Phillip Glass. He hates horror and was not into this movie. I have absolutely no idea what he thought he was composing for lol It would be a very weird comedy.

Odd Thomas

Ah 90s Virginia Madsen. She's in Highlander 2, which would make for a cool reaction (it's awful but so amazingly car-crash awful that it's actually really entertaining).

rictus grin

not a fan of the sequels myself, but heard good things about the remake

Adam Ingram

More Clive Barker, you guys should do Hellraiser if you haven't seen it.

WalrusWallace

Would like to recommend adding Barbarian (2022) and Heretic (2024) to the list of movies please.

Fattydoe

Everytime i rewatch this film i forget how beautifully terrifyingly exquisite it is. Sweets to the sweets

Opti_Frog

I had actually read the short story The Forbidden in the very early 90s before watching the movie because i was already a fan of Clive Barker thanks to Hellraiser. And now, obviously, i think Simone and George should watch Hellraiser (1988), the #1 horror masterpiece based on a Clive Barker work. Possibly my favourite horror movie of all time. Even my icon is from Hellraiser, my favourite ever movie prop, the Lament Configuration. 😊

Jay

It's not a remake, it's a direct sequel to this one.

Opti_Frog

Forgive my random comment, but... Memory, prophecy and fantasy, the past, the future and the dreaming moment between are all one country, living one immortal day. To know that is wisdom. To use it is the Art.

Pete Johansson

I remember when i was 8 years old. My sister rented this movie thinking it was a action movie. I can tell you there were couple of sleepless nights😁.

CryoniC

Damn, that trivia goes almost as hard as the movie🤣. Poor Simone's face hearing about the medicine cabinet.

Tyler Foster

In case anyone has issues syncing this based on the running time alone, this is the theatrical version of the movie, and it should sync *after* the opening logos. (At some point around the time of the release of the 2021 reboot/sequel, the rights transferred from Tri-Star/Sony Pictures to Universal, and at least some versions of the movie out there now remove Simone's beloved Tri-Star horse logo and the text credit afterward, which is why there's a difference of about 20 seconds.)

Dustin Duvall

Yea, I've noticed the logo thing on other movies, always trips me out. Sometimes it's the same logos, just reversed order lol. But good lookin out

Stephanie Bedworth

In the mid 90's I was riding the L in Chicago with a friend and we actually went past Cabrini Green. I was like "Omg, is that...." and he said, "Yep, Candyman." I was unnerved for the rest of the day.

Jessica McBride

Omg the purring happening is delightful 😭

The scent of film and TV is all over this RUM. Smells like freaking tee ah WANNA

The 2021 Candyman isn't a remake, it's a sequel. Its one of those things where they bring back an old franchise and decide to not only make a 20+ years later sequel for it, but they make it a sequel to ONLY the first one, ignoring the other sequels. I've never seen it, or any of the original two sequels so not sure how you should play it should you continue on. Either watch the 2021 sequel since it's a direct sequel to this one and don't bother with the other two, or watch the original two sequels, then the 2021 version if you want to go the "alternate timeline" route. I hear the 2021 sequel/soft reboot is good, but this is the only Candyman movie I've ever seen so better patrons then me would have to advise LOL

FranciscoGios

George & Simone I’m only fan of the first Candyman movie if I remember correctly the sequels were made poorly. Tony Todd was given free will by the Director to create his character’s backstory. Supposedly the version of the real story happened in England with a Caucasian man not African. The actress was hypnotized at least once and taking to set in one of those scenes she meets Candyman. Cabrini-Green was the name of the slave plantation turned to a an apartment project where Daniel Robitaille(Candyman) was killed. I’ve heard good things about Candyman 2021, never seen it but I’ll watch it if you guys do.

Skyruff

If you like this from the folklore standpoint: The Order (2003) heath ledger or the Lost Boys (1987) Kiefer Sutherland and many others.

kbobravo

Reading all the comments, I feel like I'm the only one who was majorly disappointed with the 2021 sequel. It may be better than 2 and 3, but I still found it to be a significant step down from the first.

Jessica McBride

The most recent one isn’t a remake it’s more like a sequel and worth the watch. I will say the second and third one are kind of guiltypleasures of mine, but I wouldn’t say they’re the best 😂

MacGuffinStuff

I can't believe I dared call myself a horror fan and this is the first time watching this obvious classic. One of my best friends is a gigantic horror fan, he got me into Italian horror (and Type O Negative, great band I still love), and he kept giving me shit for still not having watched this, plus he and his brother are huge Clive Barker fans. Now I get it. The premise alone is awesome, because we all grew up with stories, being Chicano I grew up with stories about La Llorona and El Cucuy (Cucuy was my favorite because it was never described, it is like the fear you feel in the dark, manifested into an entity, I literally imagined by snatched away by the darkness itself, maybe you see claws and eyes just before you're taken, and that's it... Perfect horror because it relies on your own imagination). And the movie had a unique sort of juxtaposition of modern urban dystopic horror with a Gothic horror vibe, including the music which was great. Cabrini Green is a famously fucked up place, and then you add a legend to the lore, so good. Tony Todd by the way was in the 1990 remake of Romero's "Night of the Living Dead", directed by Tom Savini (did the makeup for the original trilogy, and was Sex Machine in "From Dusk Till Dawn" lol). I actually like this version so much more because I can not stand the original Barbara compared to Patty Tallman as Barbara (she was in some episodes of Star Trek btw). Also, Ted Raimi was the bf in the recreation of the story in the beginning, he's Sam Raimi's brother. Virginia Madsen is Michael "Mr. Blonde" Madsen's sister, he has an interesting story on Celebrity Ghost Stories.

E. D.

My favorite score of Glass is probably from The Hours, but I like the score of The Truman Show too.

Jayson Phillips

you guys need to watch Now you see me 1 and 2 you will love it!

Simon Peened Me

It was released as "Blue is the Warmest Color" in English-speaking countries, like the U.S., the U.K., Canada, and Australia.

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

Tony Todd willing to dress himself with thousands of bees will always be one of the coolest things any actor and effects crew have ever pulled off and hauntingly call to mind images of Beelzebub, aka “Lord of the Flies”. Add me into the camp that’s hoping you check out Clive Barker’s other horror classic, “Hellraiser”. And for another 90s horror flick, “Jacob’s Ladder”; more psychological (and dare I say spiritual) than “Candyman” Gothica, but I think its fantastic and deserving some modern attention.

djKENTO

the next two films in the franchise are not great. BUT The recent entry is a soft reboot. It acknowledges the events of the first film but tries to do its own thing. I REALLY loved it. Jordan Peele produced and co-wrote it.

REDR58

Virginia Madsen (Helen) plays Irulan, Princess of the Known Universe in David Lynch's Dune (1984). Bernard Rose, the director, also made "Immortal Beloved" (1994) starring Gary Oldman as Ludwig von Beethoven. Well worth a watch. He also directed UB40's video for "Red Red Wine": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXt56MB-3vc Bernadette is played by Kasi Lemmons who was also in "The Silence of the Lambs" as "Ardelia Mapp" the classmate of Jodie Foster's Clarice who helps her researching the case. Holy cow the smoking in this movie...Virginia Madsen smokes so much here I feel like I should get checked for lung damage. Even for a 1990s movie it's a lot of smoking, especially for the lead character. And I thought Rooney Mara smoked a lot in "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"! And the smoking in the restaurant reminds me of the old "smoking" and "non-smoking" areas which is just nonsense because you can smell the smoke no matter where you sat. Back in the 1980s I remember the urban legends about how nefarious people were putting razor blades in Halloween candy, so when we were younger, our parents would dutifully check for any candy tampering after we were through trick-or-treating. They never found anything, of course. The circular seating/staircase structures were part of the pedestrian highway/Circle Campus at the University of Illinois, but they were demolished in the 1990s: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2rtmBbT1eE George, the doctor in the Terminator movies was named "Silberman" and he was played by Earl Boen: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earl_Boen You may be thinking of "Burke" here because Carter Burke was the shitty company man in Aliens who was trying to infect Ripley and Newt. He was played by Paul Reiser. I think we should go directly to Candyman (2021). It's well-regarded. And definitely watch "Willy Wonka" (1971). Simone, here is Sammy Davis Jr. singing "The Candy Man" in 1972: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYihDAhVPko Anyway, that was a fun reaction!

Dee

I am still an avid believer that this is a romance movie. Lol The sequels, as a lot of people have already said, aren't worth it. The "reboot" sequel is just okay, better than the 90s sequels, but not as good as the original

Max Krause

Went into this almost completely blind, but as soon as I saw that it was based on a Clive Barker story, I knew I was in for a good time, in a fucked up kind of way. So the short story this is based on, "The Forbidden", is part of his "Books of Blood" series. Only a few of those stories have been made into movies. The only one of those I watched, which was also my first Clive Barker experience, even before Hellraiser, is "The Midnight Meat Train", featuring Bradley Cooper and Vinnie Jones. It's wonderfully fucked up and I would love a reaction to it, but I can also imagine that Youtube would absolutely bury it.

MacGuffinStuff

Hellraiser is a must, as janky as it is because it's Clive Barker's first and I think only foree into directing (so interesting how great writers don't always make great directors, I submit Stephen King's only director credit "Maximum Overdrive", even though I love that movie for the kitch, it's bonkers), Hellraiser 2 was the peak of the franchise as I recall, but I think I remember 3 being terrible too, as in horror good.

I had forgotten that Ted Raimi had a cameo in Candyman and just seeing him made me smile and chuckle. 😄

Opti_Frog

The Midnight Meat Train is a perfectly decent little horror movie that would have worked better as a 30-40 minute part of an anthology. There's just not enough story to justify a 100 minute runtime. Can't fault the ending though. 🙂

JDV

Candyman 2021 is a requel. Reboot + Sequel. It's better if you go into it not knowing it's a sequel, but with the internet being what it is, there's very little chance that you'd go into it blind if you A) didn't watch upon original release or B) weren't already just watching all the Candyman movies in sequence. You don't need to watch the second or third movie to see 2021. I think it's fine. Has some cool ideas and has a more modern horror sensibility, but it doesn't hold up to the original at all.

Jesse Coombs

I'm sure someone else has answered, but "The Candy Man Can" is a lyric from "Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory" which is a fantastic movie that you should watch.

Matthew Blackwood

I like the setup and ending and stop motion in 2021. But there seemed to be a lot of ideas that didn’t get fully baked? Great ending though.

Ashton Lewis

Guys, Trevor only cheated... Not sure that warrants pure glee at his brutal slaying haha. Each to their own though I guess. Definitely a fun film, and great reaction
