Mike FromOz

I've been waiting for this all week! I was hoping George would be Frank-n-Furter, but this is amazing. Dammit, Janet!

Zinphad

Had been hoping for a final form Riff and Magenta

Mike FromOz

Oh, that would have also been awesome! Also George as Frank and Simone as Rocky 🤩

mike

I hope you can experience this in the theater!!! It’s amazing

mike

Yes that is Meatloaf btw

Hercule Pyro

Some fun facts: The actor playing Riff Raff is the original writer of the Rocky Horror Picture show and most of the cast in this are returning from the stage show. Janet's Actress hated filming it as due to the rain and limited clothing she got terribly sick This was from before Meatloaf was really famous. Tim Curry didn't want to be typecast and intentionally put on wait after this. You can see Frank n Furter, Riff Raff and Magenta at the church at the start during the photo, its assumed they intentionally busted Brad and Janets tire. This was the actor for Rockys first and only role, and he wasn't even a trained actor, hence why he didn't talk.

Mastervodo

Banger of a Thumbnail! Can't wait to get off work and watch the whole thing with you two! Until then, I will shiver in antici.............

Robert Smith

The exterior shot of the castle is a hotel in the town of Windsor, England. Oakley Court

Robert Smith

Not a larger role for Meatloaf, but I don't know how familiar you guys are with Tenacious D. Pick of Destiny would be a fun watch And to continue RHPS, there is a sequel (kind of) called Shock Treatment that is great. Keep in mind Curry, Botswick and Sarandon do not return

Andrea Tubby

Some of my teenage weekends were spent meeting up with other weirdos for Rocky Horror at Midnight.

PIG

How is it that I despise musicals, but I absolutely love The Rocky Horror Picture Show? Can someone explain why?

nj

since y’all mentioned riff’s hair at the end more than once, i have to share what was yelled out at the shows i went to in the 90s (though it was brought to my attention last week that the callouts are regional, so it may not be the same when you go): “hey, riff - where’d you get your hair done? dairy queen?” also, we brought a little grocery bag with all the props (but birdseed instead of rice because they were outdoor screenings - maybe less offensive to george), and pulled them out at the appropriate times. (and we held a newspaper over our heads with one hand and shot a water gun or spray bottle up in the air with the other to make our own rain - not separate sections.)

Angela Fantasma

Just what I needed! Also a great double feature with Rocky Horror is Phantom Of The Paradise.

rictus grin

based off a stage musical that still tours and is a great night out

Andi Herr

Imagine being a young queer or questioning person watching this when it first came out. It must've been SO life-affirming!

Thomas Yanez

Ok, sitting down to watch the no-sync version with you guys... feel bad for my neighbors right now, because they're gonna hear every damned song and a lot of weird-ass sounding audience participation yelled at the top of my lungs.

Drake

i was twice in my local theater watching the show. its honestly one of the best plays there is, if in a theater close to you they ever play it you should truly go and watch it, its such a joy xD and i feel 99% of the audience are returners people come in costumes and throwing paper when the scene comes up ... its so crazy good the play is truly superior to the cinema version for me xD

Nabikon

You know what else is a short movie? Freaked (1993). It has a runtime of 82 minutes

Will Sofer

It’s the antici… …pation.

Thomas Yanez

Wow, it looked like George came SO close to spontaneously uttering an audience participation staple... when Riffraff described his "laser" gun as capable of "emitting a beam of pure anti-matter", it looked like George was going to say "That's not a laser"... a line that was always called out at the midnight shows I attended in my youth.

Leenis

These pics of George feel like they are trying to awaken something deep in me. :P

Bookwormy

Holy shit, Brad smokes!!! Happy 50th Birthday to this!

james repka

Since you guys asked for a Rocky Horror/Back to the Future connection: From 1996 to 2002, Michael J. Fox starred in a sitcom called Spin City in which he played the Chief of Staff of the Mayor of New York City. The Mayor was played by Barry Bostwick. His character frequently wore a "I survived Rocky Horror" button on his lapel.

Beginning_of_a_new_era

I always laugh so hard when frank and Brad had sex and the just sit there in bed smoking

Maeve1667

Omg, I loved watching you guys watch this. You should check out Perks of a Wallflower if you haven't seen it. They have an example of what a live Rocky Horror performance is like in the movie.

Bookwormy

Also! SImone, Anthony Stewart Head has played Frank as well!

R.L.HUNTER

In the theatre showings, there's more than just loud people, there's singing along to the movie, dancing in the aisles, lines yelled between the lines [the man you are about to see has no neck, hey chuck where's your fucking neck--and he told us where we stand "On our feet"-- I really love the skillful way you beat the other girls "With whips and chains" to the bouquet "And that too"] and lots of props [toilet paper, toast, water guns for rain and more] The Mouth is Richard O'brien...

R.L.HUNTER

If you get a chance, you really should go to a midnight showing around Halloween, it truly is a fun experience [if you get to a good group who are into it]

Zero Cochrane

The Rio theater in Vancouver usually shows this film around Halloween.

AdamLovesMusic

The shadow cast is great. Both been to many and been in a couple myself. I would definitely recommend

Nicholas Bielik

His voice is unmistakable. “Sleep, now.”

Juley

So your complete ignorance of anything to do with RHPS made me realize that you’ve never done a reaction to The Perks of Being a Wallflower. If you’ve never seen it, you should definitely add it to your list.

PIG

lol

Jeff K.

Only mildly related since they've watched Grease: Barry Bostwick played Danny on Broadway for a bit. (And I made this comment before I even got to them referencing Grease.)

Jeff K.

I haven't watched this in years, and hearing Tim Curry's voice in this and his overall look, it made me realize that Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords, What We Do in the Shadows) would make a fantastic Frank-N-Furter. That's all I have to offer, just felt like sharing, thanks for coming along with me on this journey.

Tim_119

The castle is Oakley Court, Windsor Road, Oakley Green, Windsor, Berkshire, England, UK. It's now a 4 start hotel (https://www.oakleycourt.co.uk) so you can stay there. The glass dome on the roof was just movie magic, when they made the film the building was a dilapidated shell they had to work around buckets catching the rain water and tread carefully on the old rotting timbers. Tim Curry originated Frank-N-Furter in the stage play first in London at the Royal Court Theatre in 1973 then in LA at the Rock in 1974 before returning to the UK to make the film. Richard O'Brien who plays Riff Raff in the film was also the writer and composer of the play, you also saw him in Dark City playing Mr Hand.

Bruce Woodcock

One thing that's often overlooked is the message of RHPS. Frank, as Columbia points out, is an emotional sponge that uses people for casual pleasure before getting bored and moving on to the next person. While I'm not directly condemning polyandry, it's clear that Frank's narcissistic personality renders him incapable of forming meaningful emotional bonds with others. Murdering one ex-lover and building an innocent sex slave to use and abuse are not healthy behaviors. As Riff Raff says, "Your lifestyle's too extreme." We may, through a modern lens, see Brad and Janet becoming sexually liberated by their experiences, but the focus in the story is more on the fact that their innocence, and their marriage vows, have been violated and corrupted. Despite all of this, the movie has nevertheless become a celebratory symbol of the very free love, sexually liberal, inclusive, bohemian lifestyle the movie cautions against.

HauntSlider

I am so excited that you did this movie and I'm about to hit play but first quick back round. ( I wanted to state this before watching). I saw this movie when I was 16. From then till I was in my mid 20's. No matter where I was living I was part of the local production. I spent almost 10 years playing Riff Raff (and the occasional Frank when someone was not able to make it) at whatever local production was happening at the indie theater in whatever city I was in and I still go see it live a few times a year with the amazing cast at the Cedar Lee Theater in Cleveland Ohio. The cast called "Simply His Servants" have been so great over the past 15 years I've seen them. You HAVE to go see this live, it changes the whole view of the movie. This cult classic has helped so many small and indie theaters stay alive because the money they make off the showing of the RHPS keeps them afloat for each month. I can't wait to see the reaction to Tim Curry's reveal. That being said, I have a drink in my hand and some toast to throw at you on screen and am so excited to see your reaction to a movie that I have over 800 ticket stubs for, and those are the ones I didn't help out with the show. Enjoy. :)

Jeff Jake

Now... you 100% need to find a theater where people watch the show, dress up, and throw toilet paper and toast.

Jeremy

It feels like such a different movie with the shadowcast

Jeremy

The water isn't as bad as you think. The crowd is so packed, most of it doesn't hit the seats. And you should bring a LOT of the props. Not just one thing.

Lex Kuzma

Now that you've seen Clue and Rocky Horror, you should see Legend for another amazing Tim Curry performance.

Alec Zrike

Please tell me I'm not the only one doing the audience lines while watching this :)

Happy Hanukkah

I was doing lines while watching this! But I'm not familiar with "audience." Is that a new term for adderall? :-P

Eddy V Ruiz II

My first exposure to this was in middle school in the early 80's... twisted for life. At our small local movie house "The Grove Cinema" in Coconut Grove Miami they showed 3 music videos before the movie which got the same treatment as Rocky. The music videos were Paradise Garage - Tim Curry, Love Stinks - J Geils Band and Paradise by the Dashboard Lights - Meatloaf. The last 2 are pretty popular but the Tim Curry video most people havent seen. It is such an experience, Simone you really should follow through and find a midnight showing in Vancouver. They usually run for Halloween. The sad thing is if you do we wont get the gory details. I think we would love to get your take and hear about your experience.

Tim_119

For more Tim Curry you should checkout Legend with Tom Cruise and Oscar with Stallone

erosennin

When I was a little kid I saw this with my parents, a bunch of their friends and kids in an open air cinema. I haven't been in a couple of years, but for decades it used to be the opening and closing movie of the open air cinema season in a public outdoor swimming pool nearby. For a lot of people it's tradition to see it at least once a year. I've never seen it in a regular cinema though, but my dad told me stories of seeing it in the 80s with all the props and everything. When I was there we mostly had water pistols, rice and the newspapers and some people came in their underwear or swimwear, some in drag.

Daniel Goldberg

Not only do people bring props to the showings, many of them dress as characters from the move and it out under the screen as the movie plays. It's great fun.

Kelly Pickard

For future consideration… Movies: - Waking Ned Devine (1998) - The Devil Wears Prada (2006) - Hook (1991) - The Birdcage (1996) - Margin Call (2011) - Legend (1985) - The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert (1994) - The King's Speech (2010) - Flash Gordon (1980) - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) - City Slickers (1991) TV: - Batman: The Animated Series - Disney's Gargoyles - Barry (Max) - The Boys

WUStLBear82

It was Curry's first movie, but he had previously played the role on stage, along with Richard O'Brien (who wrote the musical), Patricia Quinn (who later became Lady Stephens when she married Maggie Smith's former husband, actor Sir Robert Stephens), and pop singer Little Nell. Sarandon and Bostwick were cast for the movie because of the American studio financing. The budget was low and did not allow for a lot of retakes; during the kick dance number of the floor show you can see Bostwick grimace when Sarandon accidentally stepped on his foot with her spike heel. Whether it could be made in 2025 specifically is a question, given what is going on in the US, but in 2016 Fox broadcast a live performance of the stage show, something that it has done with other movie musicals adapted from stage originals.

Amber

Love all the science fiction easter eggs. At it's core, this is a love letter to the science fiction genre. I've seen this so many times but still find myself catching new references all the time.

MortalCity

If Richard O'Brien sounds familiar, he voiced the dad on Phineas and Ferb. Which was an absolutely bizarre experience for me having only known him from this film before that.

FryLord

I found out last year there's an entire call and response script for the audience to respond to lines as their given on screen and it's hilarious. Although people who are attending a showing expecting to just watch the movie in silence are absolute kill joys because everyone is dancing shouting and singing AND usually there's a shadow cast of love actors acting out the entire movie and interacting with the crowd. Also I watched this in college in shadow cast form expecting an actual horror and fell in love with the experience. Here in Chicago it's performed every month by a local theatre and the halloween shows sell out a month in advance

Bandaloop

OK kids, this is what your grandparents were watching on the weekends.

Marcus Hicks

"Dinner is prepared". "Oh no, not Meatloaf again!" 🤪

Marcus Hicks

As great as this film is on its own merits, IMHO its the audience participation that has maintained its iconic status decades later.

Marcus Hicks

Audience participation lines.

Alex Ch

If anyone does particularly enjoy trivia, Entertainment Weekly just had a 50th anniversary conversation with Tim Curry, Brad, Magenta and Colombia. It’s posted on the EW YouTube channel and worth a watch.

Justin Leone

George, it's funny you should wonder whether the "lips" actor would feel very self-conscious, because the last time you saw her, she was having sex with John Cleese in front of a room full of students.

Angela D. Mitchell

This was so much fun! I loved both of your expressions reacting to this beautiful insanity and especially when Tim Curry appeared. Simone, yes, I was raised an uptight Catholic girl, but 60 seconds of Tim Curry in drag and I was like, "Yes, please!" Holy crap, that man is so sexy in this it's insane. I think my jaw actually dropped. Also, George, "Spicy curry" is definitely one of your best puns. I always think this is such a mess because I do think it starts out SO strong and kind of whimpers out at the end. But it's got so many fantastic moments, who cares? And it's so ridiculously sexy! And Richard O'Brien (Riff Raff), who sang "Time Warp," wrote the original musical! You may also remember him as the VERY creepy villain in the superb film "Dark City." And y'all absolutely should go to a live screening with an audience. It's so much fun!

Rumpus Parable Art

As has been mentioned, this was a play with multiple of the same cast members before being translated into the film.... so Curry had started the role all the way through to the film. He had lots of time to get used to those heels and learn to throw himself into the character (not that he doesn't seem to everywhere, but seems more common with those who start out on the stage and then segue). I've gone to one live showing - and the theater was giving out bags of props for anyone who hadn't brought any or wanted things added to what they'd brought. I doubt I'd go to a live showing again, honestly. I'd love to see the film on the big screen again and I love the *spirit* of the crowd participation And love that it's kept the movie alive in theaters so long..... but "it's a lot", as the slang goes. If you get overwhelmed by a lot of chaos surrounding you on all sides, I'd say go once for the experience but get a seat where you could leave if you needed to. The fact that such events like these midnight showing events happen is just awesome as part of, mainly, US & UK culture. It's a strong part of the LGBT+ communities' history/culture, as you can easily imagine. Another big reason why the midnight showings made it take off when they did... that era that was the "timeslot" for a lot of community activities *and* gave an excuse to dress/behave in all manner of way one couldn't during the day and other films.... like Halloween, just more frequent lol.

Garrick Smalley

I will always and forever do audience lines when I watch. Don't know that I could stop myself.
