Saruman and JD Vance! Not my favorite entry into the Bond franchise, but still looking forward to watch this when I get home!

Simon

Please keep the Bond reactions coming!

Marko T.

I like this movie but sadly it didn't perform as well as they expected at the box office. They decided to increase the budget for the next one The Spy Who Loved Me. It will feel bigger and it also has the wider aspect ratio again.

Mastervodo

Know who else has three nipples? Chandler Bing from Friends! It's canon! Look it up!

dudewheresmycar

Craft one of the greatest car stunts in cinema history.... and then ruin it with a slide whistle.

jmundt33a

I wonder how much better Lee would have been than Moore as Bond.

jmundt33a

Never Say Never Again was a Thunderball remake for the 1980s.

jmundt33a

Very Austin Powers base destruction.

Spacedone

Just because George didn't recognise a younger Christopher Lee, I'm going to recommend they watch a few of his older movies: Dracula (1958) - aka Horror of Dracula in US - This is the film that made him famous. The Devil Rides Out (1968) The Wicker Man (1973)

Robert Cooper

Herve Villachaize just makes me think of JD Vance now.

Nate Gavin

Seriously great job Simone - you have many super powers.

Joe Lazarus

Nah.. Lee's too intense for Bond. Great as a villain though!!

rictus grin

the Wicker Man is one of the best British films ever made

Justin Feldman

Bond movies really are a time capsule. J.W. Pepper (racist sheriff) was brought back BECAUSE he was so popular from Live and Let Die, and the trope of bumbling, southern sheriff was so popular.

Russell Massey

I was born in 1960 and for me Bond is Connery, and I detested the slide into comedy that came with Moore. My brother was born in 1970 and for him Bond is Roger Moore. I do think that the Moore era of Bond has aged particularly poorly - I only really got back into the franchise with Goldeneye.

JoeE

Also has Britt ekland

Lusoris

"Oh my god I can see the crew in the mirror" ;) That actually looks like a fail of the one dude stumbling against the table and moving/changing the angle of the mirror kekw...

stephane

The next one, The Spy who loved me, is one of the greatest Bond movies and the best by far from Roger Moore. It is actually really great, fun, smart and very well done. Everything: the cinematography, production design, music, actors, gadgets are great. Prepare to be awed by some of the moments: The precredit action scenes, the car, the henchman...:) I can't wait to see you reacting to it! The next great Bond movies are the two with Timothy Dalton - I particularly like licence to kill-, Goldeneye and Tomorrow never dies with Pierce Brosnan, Casino Royale and Skyfall with Daniel Craig.

rictus grin

i think for my generation Hervé Villechaize is best known for his role in the TV series Fantasy Island where he co starred with Khan himself Ricardo Montalban.

rictus grin

some of this one has hints of the surreal and amazing 60's British espionage/scifi TV series The Prisoner

Mastervodo

I am sure Simone was giddy all day for calling out Christopher Lee before the credits started!

rictus grin

if you want more of Lee's voice checkout the superhero comedy/Musical The Return of Captain Invincible

tom david johansen

now i wanna see them take on the Hammervers of classic horror, those with Christopher Lee as Dracula :3

Darren Harrison

This was the first James Bond movie to be released in China. This fact was mentioned by the late British film critic Barry Norman on his long-running BBC film review show in the 1980s. Christopher Lee was a cousin of Bond creator Ian Fleming.

Darren Harrison

Yes. The producers only had the rights to “Thunderball”. The movie "Never Say Never Again" is often inaccurately called "unofficial," but its creators had the legal right to make it, making it official. I mistakenly referred to it as "unofficial," but Bond continuation author Raymond Benson corrected me during a conversation. Benson pointed out that even the 1967 spoof "Casino Royale" is an official Bond movie because the makers had rights in hand. Fleming used the plot for a failed 1950s film project as the basis for the “Thunderball” novel. His collaborators sued, claiming he had used elements they had come up with (including, reportedly SPECTRE and Blofeld). Fleming kept the book rights, but they awarded the film rights to Kevin McClory. McClory came to an agreement with EON Productions that allowed them to make the 1965 movie “Thunderball”. Part of the deal was that McClory would not exercise his rights for 10 years. Hence, the last named reference to Blofeld and SPECTRE was in 1971's "Diamonds Are Forever". That is, until McClory passed away and Eon acquired his rights (making the movie "SPECTRE")

rictus grin

"why does he sleep like a Vampire" all those Dracula movies might just have something to do with it ;)

JW works in a racism is hilarious kind of way. Doesn't land the same today.

Roger Davies

For more Christopher Lee goodness I'd highly recommend The Three Musketeers and it's sequel The Four Musketeers. Great films with stacked casts.

2026-09-05 05:00 I met one of the real life Scaramanga family once a few years ago. They told how Ian Fleming named the man with the golden gun after George Scaramanga, a fellow student who Fleming reportedly disliked. I know that's been told elsewhere, but it was fun hearing it from an actual Scaramanga.

wow I don't remember the climax being so contrived. The liquid nitrogen is slightly warmer than absolute zero, oh no its going to explode!

Mycenaeus

So, did you not recognize Christopher Lee in the original Wicker Man, either, George? Maybe you should rewatch that one, presuming Simone has not seen it anyway.

weyland1000

Loved the reactions to this one . Can’t wait for the next . The Spy Who Loved Me . By far the best of the Roger Moore Bonds . 👍

jmundt33a

I…have no concept of a connection between these two. Why?

jmundt33a

The intensity is supposed to be part of the character, isn’t it?

jmundt33a

Also, their first try at a heroine counterweight to Bond after the Matt Helm/Clouseau nonsense with Goodnight.

Old School Drew

The car jump was designed by Raymond McHenry on a computer inspired by his work on a simulation of single vehicle accidents. Based on mathematical and computerized calculations provided by the Cal span corporation New York the car had to be perfectly balanced at the driver in the steering wheel are exactly in the middle it'll also had to hit a curved ramp at exactly 48 mph.

Philipp Roensch

Fair, one of the weaker Bond movies, carried by a charismatic villain. I wager the meta-anticipation of Christopher Lee having a showdown with Bond, by being a very similar elusive agent character is far greater. Again, they could have cut the chases or fighting school scenes for a more developed finale, but those were better in trailers. Got great stunt actors and stunts in it as well, as long as no slide-whistle kills it^^. My favorite part of Bond is often the globe-trotting, and this one delivers with great locations.

Max Krause

Looks like they had some trouble landing the seaplane on the shore because one of the floats is suddenly missing ^^

jmundt33a

It became the soundtrack to one of MGM’s splash reels. Can’t remember the anniversary, but they folded a lot of Bond in there. Connery, Moore, and Brosnan.

Pythos

I wish nothing but bad things on whoever added that slide whistle to the car jump. Nearly single-handedly ruined one of the best stunts in the series

TexasNight

Lots of good information, thanks!

Dan

1:19:30 (no copy needed): Actually, that's realistic. British guys are just incredibly good in bed and that's been a British strategic national advantage for centuries. It's basically how the British Empire happened. Source: Am a British guy.

G P

The next one is one of the best!

Dan

Re the rock formations - I'm pretty sure they didn't blow them up for real. They filmed around Khao Phing Kan which was already a known geological site at the time.

StonyD

Smoky and the Bandit era?

StonyD

"It's a nubbin"

JoeNotCharles

One of my least favourite Bond movies, because it has a concept that sounds so good on paper, but they screwed up the execution in so many ways... All the movies that are worse than this, I just don't watch, but I keep forgetting how bad this one is and getting sucked into watching it again, because how can the one with Christopher Lee as the anti-Bond NOT be one of the best?

Skyruff Creative

Dam! Missed it by one. My call out times in this movie and will likely miss one of the best bond films “the spy who loved me”.

Thomas88

No they didnt, you can visit the island as a tourist attraction today.

Matt Blanchette

...that would be composer John Barry. :-/

Matt Blanchette

I don't think George is familiar with those...

Matt Blanchette

Technically, "Live and Let Die" started a trend, because it was made BEFORE "Smokey and the Bandit" AND "The Dukes of Hazzard"!

Matt Blanchette

"South Park" is currently parodying Vance as Tattoo the Dwarf, complete with silly voice.

Matt Blanchette

There's an anecdote involving one of the models', ah... carpeting, that I shall not repeat, but it's on IMDb for the mordauntly curious.

The Real Andrew Kim

Just in terms of you guys being lost about locations in the story, I feel like you missed the detail about Hai Fat's home being located in Bangkok which they established in the Shipwreck headquaters dialogue scene. The editing was pretty bad because they just jump cut from the shipwreck hq to an exterior shot of Hai Fat's house in Bangkok Thailand without any other location establishing B roll to set the fact that they travelled to Bangkok and that all the scenes after that take place in Thailand. It also doesnt help that Hai Fat's home was just generic asian house with a mix of chinese, thai and japanese decor with the sumo wrestlers and the same with the karate school. why are they practicing japanese karate with chinese kungfu master in thailand? also there has to be a gong........ Hip also mentions back at the shipwreck hq that he has family in Bangkok. The schoolgirls speaking mandarin and thai were probably to help establish that they were in Hip's family town in Bangkok. And M assigned Goodnight to partner with Bond which is why all three of them were in thailand.

The Real Andrew Kim

Also I find it funny that George knew about Christopher Lee playing Dracula but didn't make the connection about why Scaramanga looks like he is sleeping in a coffin in that one scene. Simone didn't know he was Dracula, but how could George not make out the homage?

Lord of Misrule is the English term for the old custom in multiple cultures of randomly choosing a (usually) lower-status person to be in charge of festivities, most often at Christmas, whose directives everyone else, even higher-status, must obey. For all of the Connery films and the single one with Lazenby, the principle supplier of cars was Ford Motor Company--English Fords in Dr. No and mostly American ones in later movies even if set in outside the USA. In Moore's first film General Motors bid the highest to be featured, supplying mostly Chevrolets and a few Cadillacs. All of the cars in the NYC elevated freeway scene were brand new Caprices, Impalas, and Bel Airs, e. g. For this movie, financially struggling American Motors thought the advertising value of the car stunts were worth scraping together enough cash for the highest bid to MGM/UA. Even the Bangkok police cars were US Matador sedans, much larger than the Japanese and British imports in the background. Scaramanga drove the just-introduced and much different-looking Matador coupé, while car driven by Bond and the one which did the flip (apparently the first stunt designed by computer modeling to get the ramp curvature just right) were AMC Hornet hatchbacks. The stock Hornet was available with a 304ci V8, but it had to be considerably modified to accelerate fast enough to successfully make the jump.

Matt Blanchette

...but why/how does M have the phone number of Scaramanga's junk and know that Bond and Goodnight are on it?

Marcus Hicks

I don't hate this film, but its definitely the weakest Bond film during Roger Moore's run IMHO. Without Christopher Lee as the Bond villian, though, I'd probably just skip it.

Marcus Hicks

IIRC, Macau was still under Portugese control at this point. Like Hong Kong, Macau didn't go back to China until 1999.

jmundt33a

View To A Kill, Octupussy, and Moonraker thank you for this endorsement.

jmundt33a

That’s Britt Eckland? Damn, they really gave wasted her in this role. For all those who carry on about Richards as Christmas Jones, or Tanya Roberts, THIS felt like the real low point.

The Real Andrew Kim

Yeah that was definitely just a gag to end the movie, but another detail I think George and Simone forgot was that Goodnight mentions how one of the buttons on the back of her dress was a homing device Q made for her which is how they found Scaramanga's island, so that explains maybe how M knew their location and then maybe somehow hacked the frequency for the phone maybe? that's the best explaination i could think of.

WUStLBear82

My Dad bought an '80 Eagle wagon in the bronze with rust interior. I was in college and wanted the '72 Capri but he traded it in.

Naturekitty5309

Loved this reaction. The next Bond is my favorite. The best opening paired with a great song from a great singer. No spoilers. Excited for it.

Happy Hanukkah

"the phone number of Scaramanga's junk" Not only does Scaramanga have a third nipple which becomes a plot point, but now his junk has a phone number?! WTF?! :-P

Marcus Hicks

Man, given a choice between Maude Adams and Britt Ekland, I'll take Britt any day of the week!

Marcus Hicks

Well I really enjoy those 3 films. Obviously opinions are subjective 😉.

J Danger87

Does anyone else think 007 movies need their own genre or collection list here? If love to be able to run thru them all in order.

Thomas Lance

Did you know that Alice Cooper did the song? I hear he turned it in a day late, and they went with what they went with. I think it would have worked. I will always remember that. I like classic rock and classic Bond.

Superpotroast

There are a couple James Bond movies I haven't seen for like decades, this is one of them..And I totally forgot Christopher Lee was even in a Bond film.. And while the car flip is a great stunt they did ruin it with the cartoony whistle and the oh-so-annoying Louisiana Sherriff character..

Justin Leone

This is one of the few Bond movies that I remembered very little of. The few things I remembered were: The mystifying return of Sheriff Pepper... Why?! How did Goodnight get this job?! Christopher Lee Neat car stunt

Justin Leone

He also named Goldfinger after Erno Goldfinger, a fairly well known brutalist architect that he met once and immediately disliked.
