Favorite day of the week is here!

AlixFrost

So ready for this week's episodes. The Old Man Voll episode is one of my personal favorites.

Tom Hess

Oh, Frieren is here. Time to leave work.

Jose Robles

Lol I didn't remember certain flashback that is expanded on Season 2!, don't worry about Sein, he will come back.... on Avengers: Doomsday

PG Modehouse

Not sure if y'all caught it because it was preceded by a booby joke, but Frieren has lost 11 times to mages with LESS mana than her.

Honey Hermsen

Please consider watching Azumanga Daioh for something fun, strange and sweet. And for a little bit of romance I highly recommend My Dress-Up Darling and Fragrant flower blooms with dignity

Thall

The intro spoilering in anime depends highly on the anime. For example, with Frieren its just characters walking, no spoilers there. In One Piece they show fight pairups sometimes that will only happen a hundred episodes later, or new abilities and transformations. It's maddening!

Tom Hess

@Simone and George: Very minor niggle: At 55:00 in the uncovered version, for whatever reason, the text is unreadable. Like the player decided to display it in bold or with a black outline/shadow. It's supposed to look like this: https://imgur.com/a/R0QRTG0

Jose Robles

I already mention this but the ending songs even that are the same music and different animation, the lyrics are also different, If remember correctly the first one is a letter from Himmel to Frieren, and the 2 one is Frieren answering the letter, firdt one starts with a question: are you alright? can you hear me? and the second starts with: I am all right, I can hear you I love these 2 endings. and yes Simone is right about the fan theory about Fern on the ending song :( but is just a fan theory

Jacob

Definitely, it's a reputation that's well earned from anime. I still remember getting spoiled about the first Super Saiyan transformation in Dragon Ball Z as a kid.

Jacob

Loved the discussion on people not recognizing Frieren in the end commentary. My 2 cents, most scientists of the highest level and plenty of ordinary people would recognize Einstein I would hope if he was suddenly walking around today. Himmel is the Einstein level character of notoriety in the hero's party. We've seen so many individual statues of him and so many people still talk about him. No one has recognized Frieren once yet at first glance except I think the little girl from the village that protects the Hero's Sword, and she has a great reason to. We've had several characters eventually recognize her, and most were people who met her long ago. I know exactly who Marie Curie was and the huge importance of her contributions. There's no way I can blindly remember what she exactly looks like I can for Einstein, but I do have a blurry recollection of it.

Thall

To be honest, people not recognizing Frieren seems pretty believable to me. Very few Germans could name any of the players from the 1954 football world championship win. That's been 70 years only, and there is video and audio of it. Anyone could just check up on it, and they are considered "legendary" in Germany. Still, no one would recognize any of them in everyday life. In Frierens world without any videos, no widespread information? Seems pretty likely Frieren would be forgotten after 90 years. At least a lot of "talking yourself out of it" would occur! Can't possibly be her!

Private_pAuLa

I love that you two love this series as much as I do. And I actually joined here just so that I can fully enjoy it together with you

Danny Zimmermann

any character and place names in the anime are real German words with fitting meanings: • Frieren → “to freeze” or “to feel cold” – fits her calm, distant personality • Himmel → “heaven/sky” – symbolic for the deceased hero • Stark → “strong” – he is the warrior • Fern → “far” – the mage initially seems emotionally distant The architecture, clothing, and towns in the anime strongly resemble Medieval German towns.

Re: the discussion about Frieren not being recognized, I think it's totally plausible that Frieren wouldn't be widely known. The world she lives in is essentially medieval, technologically: it predates mass communication, I doubt most of its inhabitants are literate, and photographs only exist as rare objects of magical origin. Furthermore, Frieren spends most of her time prowling dungeons, collecting obscure spells and trinkets, and gathering herbs in forests. Her life has been mostly nomadic and solitary, and she appears to have no interest in fame, nor in magical academies and guilds, so there's little reason for even the minority of elite, educated people and other mages to be aware of her. I'd find it dubious that anyone who hasn't been to the Royal Capital would have ever heard her name or seen a depiction of her, unless they encountered her during her earlier adventures. Sure, some people may have heard of an elf who was in the Hero's Party, but I don't think that's sufficient to specifically identify Frieren.

Race Jenkins

Regarding the 'older lady' thing with Sein: this is something that doesn't translate well. He's not into old grannies, he's using a Japanese word that would refer to a lady older than you, but not an old woman. There's not really an English equivalent.

Milosz Skowronski

Sein has to go after his friend first, alone. If you remember, Frieren said she resents Sein because of her "aversion to one's own kind". What she meant by that was people who bummed away their lives and refused to change anything thinking it was too late for them. And just like Himmel knocked some sense into her, she wants to knock some sense into Sein. And while her regrets of never connecting with Himmel can't be helped, not truly, Sein's potentially can. So she's angry that he was too blockheaded to even try and do something about it before it was ACTUALLY too late. He HAS TO go find his friend, on his own, like how they decided to go on adventures together, just the two of them, back before Sein flaked out. If they reconnect and go on adventures, that's a lifelong dream realised, and if Gorilla is dead, Sein will at least have closure, and he can go to see his friend in Aureole instead, alongside Frieren and the gang.

Naj

Exactly. It's like expecting people to have facial recognition of Einstein today without photographs and assuming that every Einstein you meet is THE guy. It's knowledge for only the real nerds of the day.

Race Jenkins

Yeah, Milf is probably the closest, but even that skews a little older than "Oneesan" would imply.

Philipp Roensch

That the side characters are also captivating so quickly, is a testament to the great story boarding and efficient dialogue. A flashback could just be a sudden and long explainer to invent context, but this show also looks at little things of continuity, they feel like really time passed. The flashbacks are also used exactly in the right moments to allow that thematic connection, very well done. But I'm romantic about Dwarves anyway, this show has it easy on me^^. Lots of new names at the academy arc, still somewhat profiling the characters: Übel - Evil, Wirbel - Whirl/Vortex, Denken - Thinking, Lawine - Avalanche, Kanne - Kettle, Stille (the bird) - Silance

Milosz Skowronski

I love how the second ED cannot work without the first. Not only because it's literally the second part of the same song, but also because the second ED represents Frieren's emotional growth so far. Going from lying down to cry at the foot of a grave, to that tear then spawning a butterfly representing Fern entering her life, then the butterfly landing on a blue flower and taking the form of Fern, to finally Frieren laying her head on Fern's lap. It's fitting that ED debuted in an episode talking about how even adults need emotional support. I don;t think it represents Fern's death, quite the opposite - it represents how Fern gave Frieren a new lease on life. Instead of plunging into another lifetime of loneliness, regrets and sadness, Frieren (largely thanks to Heiter) received another gift of friendship and another chance to connect with someone. At least that's my theory.

Milosz Skowronski

Totally. Especially like they said, Himmel was the frontman and the rest of the party were "supporting members". Most people would know and recognise Freddy Mercury nowadays, but how many people would know and recognise the other members of Queen? Probably a lot of lifelong fans plus some rock enthusiasts, but other than that, you wouldn't expect an average Joe to recognise other Queen members on a picture, let alone name them. And Queen's heyday was less than 80 years ago, and was way more televised than our heroes adventures.

lax

For license update better analogy would be medical license. You need to periodically confirm that you still have skills and up to date with modern state of medicine. As for recognition, dedication life to some profession doesn't mean that you will recognise important people who made significant impact. Their faces isn't important for it, their contribution are. For example, there are a lot of named theorems and principles in math, but very few mathematicians know how this people looked like.

mhan00

Nice catch by Simone about the end credits. A lot of fan speculation at the time was that the Frieren was standing at Fern's grave in the end credits, and there were certainly a lot of signs that seem to support that are in the end credits. And assuming that nothing actually kills Frieren during Fern's lifetime, then it is inevitable that she will outlive Fern eventually. And it isn't that surprising that people don't recognize Frieren. They don't have the information technology that we have and their only representations are from statues, some of which might not be all that well made, and from what we have seen by far the most common statues that exist are of Himmel, with only a few towns having the rest of the party represented, presumably because Himmel was the only one that truly enjoyed getting statues made of him. And it has been 80+ years since the Demon King was killed and entire generations have been born and died after that. It's like WW2 stuff. While we might learn about it in history class, most of the most well known people of the war aren't well known to everyone, and the vast majority of people who do know the names aren't going to be able to recognize on sight those people if they saw them walking by. Mostly, we'd just know of the most famous names too, like Chamberlain, FDR, Patton, etc. Since it doesn't really apply to us on a day to day basis, most of the other names would fade for us. And Frieren's world doesn't have stuff like movies and television series to keep those names fresh for them, and they probably don't have much in the way of a formal universal education system to ensure that history is taught.

Ogami

Yeah, "Oneesan" literally means " big sister" and is about that older girl archetype you know. Like if you are a teen and know a girl/young woman in her early 20s that would be a typical "Oneesan". For Sein who is around 30 it means a woman in the 35-40 range most likely. So he just wants a sexy adult woman in the party who is not a teenager ( Fern) or acts like a teenager ( Frieren). xD

Ogami

Yeah and there are other factors too. We learn later in the manga ( VERY SMALL MANGA SPOILERS, REALLY JUST SOME TRIVIA BUT I WARN EVERYONE IF YOU DONT WANT TO KNOW) that in the Northern Empire Frieren´s master Flamme is known as a man. All her statues are male and the reason is that woman have a lower status in the Empire so the big magic hero that brought magic to the Empire could not have been a woman, that would be a disgrace. So all her statues are male and its taught that Flamme was a man. Thats also something thats very believable in medieval societies with no record keeping except a few people who can read/write.

Alexander Holms

To comment on the not recognizing Frieren thing. I am a student of history in college. I love studying ww2. General Patton is a very famous American general famous for many battles. I have seen pictures of him in history books and online and he is a pretty distinctive man. But still thinking about it right now I can barely picture what he looks like. Remember when Flamme was talking about how demons and humans differentiate who is important and who isn't? For humans you can tell someone when they have wealth and people afford them status. Frieren doesn't have attendants and doesn't have huge wealth. She travels around like a common mage. So people don't expect someone of her caliber to be living like a vagabond mage. Also, it may not seem like it because we only follow Frieren but important things have happened since the Demon king was defeated. There have been wars and political upheaval. Mages, while studying her achievements probably don't spend as much time as we do staring at statues of her.

Jacob

They definitely know by now the meaning behind it. I can practically see the wink in George's eye while he still does it. Absolutely love it.

Hatty Time

The ending theme song shows a blue flower that represents the flower that grew in Himmel's home area, and sort of represents him esp with that blue hue matching his hair color. Frieren is wandering by herself a bit aimlessly through the past background that feels like memories as we also see a demon castle before the butterfly that is Fern's hair brooch come and get her. At the end, the blue flower is now bloomed next to a grave that can be assumed to be Himmel's but Frieren now not alone with Fern.

Simone and her makeup brush/cat hair moment was everything. Gave me a good laugh and made my day tons better. Thanks for not editing it out

I've always thought that Frieren doesn't get recognized because she is so famous. The mages would see her and assume that couldn't be the mage from the hero's party coming to get certified. It falls into the stories of famous actors/actresses lose look alike contests due to people not knowing who they are in my book.

When I was a kid, at the airport with my parents, my stepdad, who knew everyone, because he was a contractor, and worked with a ton of people over many years, said "Hey, how you doin', man!" and went over and shook a guy's hand, like he had done all through my childhood, at restaurants, theme parks, you name it. The guy said "Hey, not bad! How 'bout yourself?" and they talked for a minute, and mom asked me "You know who this is, right?" and I said "Yeah!" and shook his hand. I had no idea who he was, but didn't want to be rude to one of my step dad's business associates that I probably met in the past. Then the guy left, and mom asked me "You know who that was, right?" I said "No idea." "Ed McMahon." For anyone not in the know, he was the like the Andy Richter to Conan O'Brien, e.g. the sidekick on the Johnny Carson show. I grew up watching them both. He was also in endless commercials. He was mega famous back then, but I just didn't recognize him at all in person. I'm going to presume that's what's going on in the magic city, with no one recognizing Frieren. It may also seem out of place that she's taking a magic test, when many may presume someone of her legendary status wouldn't need to. I'm going to go with that.

Milosz Skowronski

One Piece is a fossil anyway at this point. It was a completely different era when it started. Every time I see people recommending One Piece to reactors I'm like: "Just wait for the remake!" It will avoid every pitfall the original has been gleefully falling into, and you won't have to wait literally 20 years for the reactor to catch up with the story. You can just watch along.

Omar Bautista

With how much they say they like Frirens fern gathering/small adventure moments I feel like DR.Stone would be a great show for them to watch next. It ain't ferns but the gathering stuff and building might intriuge them

Peter42

For those that missed it... frieren means to be freezing cold so whenever you see her shiver or trying to get warm she is performing her own name. In a world where everyone is named after their main characteristic it's funny that being cold a lot is what's the main take away for this character.

Rainy Days

Post episode 2 talk in this week's trilogy made me realize this: The beauty in this show, is that it is entirely focused on what happens after the big adventure is over; Looking for the next adventure, knowing it won't be ( and doesn't need to be ) as grand as the last; In short... finding that the real magic, is in the mundane...

Kami

Example of a show having a super spoiler intro. Demon slayer your currently watching spoiled genya has a shotgun and the love hashiras sword. Just 2 simple things. A couple more that are very obvious and when you see it you'd go "oh like in the intro" which kinda sucks frierens arnt that bad.

Hercule Pyro

Its funny seeing them go into depth on what type of woman Sein likes, saying "oh frieren doesn't act mature, shes more like a teenager, she's too old" when in reality he just means he likes milfs.

Jobbe Smit

Frieren also kept to herself for centuries till the heroes party and when she joined Himmel would dominate the spotlight. Afterwards she kept to herself again, instead of engaging with the mage world. Yes she's a famous figure but she's also in the background. She'd be a physicist that publishes one great study and never did a press tour, never gave a lecture, etc. Most probably just think she looks like every other elf because elves are rare and most people only seen one, statues of Frieren.
