Degenerick

this movie traumatized tf outta me as a kid

OddThomas

Well now you need to watch The Frighteners by PJ

Chris B

RIP to all the really good movies that were crushed by King Kong in the polls ;)

Mastervodo

KONG! KONG! KONG! KONG!

elias rinis

I've been waiting for this since I saw it on a poll back in September. My favourite movie as a child and I enjoy it very much still. KING KONG LET'S GOOOO

Ea-nāṣir, the worst copper merchant in history!

George, you're most likely talking about King Kong from 1933. As with this movie, there are a T-Rex in it, which he fights. If you're young, you might mistake it for Godzilla. King Kong, and all the dinosaurs in that one are, of course, stop motion.

Jay Johnson

King Kong ain't got $#!+ on me.

Jeff K.

This movie was at the forefront of the Blu Ray vs HD-DVD battle, because it was one of the first big "spectacle" movies released on physical media when those platforms were introduced. I appreciate what a film nerd Peter Jackson is, too, with his love of the original shining through with all of the Easter Eggs peppered throughout (like early on, Jack Black's character mentions Fay, referencing Fay Wray, who played the Naomi Watts role in the original), among many, many others. Of course a not-so-fun fact about the original is that it was Hitler's favorite film, but let's pretend that didn't happen so we can still enjoy it...

Degenerick

omg... they are watching Attack On Titan!!!!!!

Darren Harrison

When they are going through the possible actresses the name Wray comes up, but Denham is told she is unavailable because she is doing a picture for RKO. That is a reference to Fay Wray and the RKO movie she starred in was the original “King Kong”

Matt O'Keefe

Have not seen this in 20 years or so. My late father-in-law got a pirated DVD of this just after it came out in theaters and gave it to me. I do not remember how he got it.

your local cryptid

i watched this as a child and the insect pit scene gave me nightmares for literally YEARS. i guess it's time to finally rewatch and unpack some trauma UPDATE NOPE THAT SCENE IS STILL AWFUL

2026-09-13 17:00 That kid is Jamie Bell, the original Billy Elliot. Tom Holland portrayed Billy Elliot on stage. I recommend watching Billy Elliot; it's a fantastic film and Jamie Bell's very first role.

Doug Shore

this along with the 1933 version are my all time favorite movies. can't wait to watch when i get home

blerbaberpaterb

....why RIP...? its not like movies that dont win polls gets tossed away forever and never watched... they just get watched at a different date...people also need to stop acting like the movie polls are some official ranking of quality...

Rev

Oddly enough, George, it seems Jack Black is hosting SNL this weekend with musical guest Jack White. They previously collaborated on "Don't Blow It, Kage", performed by Tenacious D, and produced by Jack White. Have they actually performed a song together? I could swear they did, but I can't seem to find more info right now because everything is talking about them being on SNL together tonight.

Jay Johnson

if Hitler liked drinking water, would you abstain from drinking water just because of that?

Data Cable

I was sooo disappointed when I learned Jack Black was cast in this flick... and not playing the monkey.

Cartoons ReAct

I knew that practically nothing disturbs me in movies mostly when I watch this in theaters as no scene makes me feel disturbed in any way

Jon Johns

I'm not even too far in to the reaction, but I can see someone using most of it in a new fan edit of G & S 🤣 "Eww Eww Eww" "No No No fuck right off!"

Jay Johnson

George: "It's a movie, not a massage parlor" Simone: "Write me a play, motherf#cker!" classic

Twiska Brand

The tie in game for this movie was and still is goated. Like, I legit think it's the greatest movie game of all time.

James MacDonald

To this day, the death of Andy Serkis character (and that whole scene really), along with the silence, haunts me.

steezo jckson

jack black and white are on snl together tonight

Life in the cave of Garanoga

Great reaction. This movie doesn't get enough love these days. The newer more action driven movies get more hype and attention. All the Kong and all The Godzilla movies are worth watching. All of them are good fun at the very least, aside from the few Kong movies like this one which are more about the allegory. In my opinion, since you've seen Minus one (The best in my opinion) and I know George has said he has seen the original Godzilla, I suggest starting with 1998. Now before the fans kill me, it's a fun movie and is a good contrast to Minus one, gives a good insight into just how different the Godzilla eras are. Then do Shin Godzilla (2016). After that the modern Godzilla/Kong movies in order and maybe sprinkle older Godzilla films in between. But I'd love to see you add these movies to the polls. Godzilla and Kong are just screen legends that deserve attention.

REDR58

Godzilla… Don’t forget Gamera. Gamera is a friend to all children.

Jeff K.

I was definitely skeptical when Jack Black got cast as Carl Denham, mostly because he just didn't really compute when I thought about the original film. But at the end of the day, Carl Denham is a showman first and foremost, so honestly, Jack Black is pretty perfect casting for someone who is gonna get up on stage and just start working a crowd. I also just remembered watching the scenes with Jack Black and Colin Hanks that this was actually the second movie they worked on together, after having co-starred in Mike White's movie Orange County. Oh! Also, the scene where Kong kills the T-rex by ripping its jaw apart and then playing with the shattered remains is taken directly from the original movie, too.

tom david johansen

who else wanna see these 2 react to the original Godzilla vs King Kong, the 1 George mentioned he once saw?

Jeff K.

Just read that Jamie Bell is going to be starring in the new continuation of Peaky Blinders as Cillian Murphy's son all grown up, too. I've always been a big fan of Jamie's so it's always great to see him working. He was SO GOOD in Billy Elliott. What a beautiful film.

Jimi Hart

Amazing. Inspiring, Fun and feel good, with a fantastic soundtrack. That’s why it’s a West-End show too!

Darren Harrison

I was surprised that Simone was evidently not aware of the "King Kong" story since this was the third time the movie has been made. I also really like the 1976 version with Jessica Lange and Jeff Bridges

thomas king

The 1933 version is by far the better movie. LOL u couldn't tell it was a 1930s setting till the last 10 minutes?

thomas king

Time to watch the original Mighty Joe Young.

Marko T.

Great reaction. This is one of my favorite movies with the 1933 and 1976 versions. I love them all. If you liked the great behind the scenes documentaries that Jackson did for Lord of the Rings then I recommend checking out the ones about this movie too. Back of my Blu-Ray says over 13 hours of bonus content. They also talk about the King Kong movie Jackson was making around 1996-7. It got cancelled and he made LOTR trilogy.

Polecat21

yeah - doesn't come close to the 1933 version. Since I hadn't seen this for almost 20 years, I was at first pleasantly surprised when it started out. Then they got to island. Way too many eye rolling moments. The terrible Dino stampede scene, Jimmy firing a machine gun at bugs crawling on someone. The totally over the top T-rex fight (they should have stuck to the original single T-rex). And (as the reactors mentioned) the ridiculous way Kong was flinging her around in multiple scenes. Sorry but just my opinion - stick with the 1933 version. It's a top 50 movie of all time for a reason......

megamoo chilli

Andy Serkis must wonder why Peter Jackson wants to torture him. Compare the end of LOTR and the end of Kong. Not to mention the huge fleshlights death.

Cam

It’s a lovely film. One of my favorites! Definitely my favorite King Kong film.

Cam

It definitely is

Twiska Brand

That comparison doesn't really work. It would be more like Hitler having a favourite car or a favourite moustache style which you also loved. Everyone drinks water, but not everyone's favourite film is King Kong.

michael denny

I always thought the ruins looked like deadric ruins

Brandon

This version easily has the most believable relationship between Kong and Ann Darrow. IMO the 1976 version is kind of shitty and I'm glad it's kind of faded in the public memory. It also lead to one of the worst sequels ever made in King Kong Lives... which was my first experience with Kong when I was very young. Odd coincidence that George asked about Jack Black and Jack White doing music together... Jack Black is hosting SNL with Jack White as the musical guest tonight. Something tells me they won't perform music together, but who knows?

John Hoonhorst

Hope you guys react to the orginal sometime later this year!

maikeru

I liked Serkis in the game Heavenly Sword, it was also fun playing it.

Mister Forbez

The one time I ever took a chance as an early adopter of technology was purchasing the HD-DVD player for the XBox 360. It came with a free copy of 'King Kong.'

michael denny

Hanno the navigator of Carthage wrote about gorillas in 500ish bc, gorillas is a Greek word which means tribe of hairy women.

Nemo

I didn't quite catch what george said after he referenced titans. Has he already seen it or what makes you think they will watch it?

Simone's Coconut Squire

So you guys totally missed the best meta joke in the whole movie. In the cab when they’re trying to figure out replacement actresses, Jack Black says “Fay’s a size 4” and Hanks replies “She’s doing a picture for RKO.” Black comes back with “Cooper, I might have known” Fay Wray played Ann Darrow in the original King Kong for RKO Pictures, directed by Merian Cooper.

Sumner Hayes

Heavenly Creatures, Meet the Feebles, and the Frighteners are all under 2 hours, along with a handful of others. Every movie he directed before Lord of the Rings is under 2 hours, every movie he directed after is over 2 hours.

John Hoonhorst

Im glad they watched this one first because I dont think it would have been as emotional for Simone if she was more prepared.

maikeru

@Jeff never watched Peaky Blinders.. will I need eng sub titles to understand shit? 😅

Life in the cave of Garanoga

Hell yeah. I'd love to see them do all the offshoot movies also but that's a huge undertaking lol.

Sumner Hayes

Hanno wrote of a tribe of “hairy people” he called Gorillai, and when the gorilla was discovered by Westerners in 1847 it was named after them. But Hanno's Gorillai were almost certainly not gorillas. The geography is wrong, for one thing: gorillas don't live on the coast where Hanno was. The behavior is also wrong: Hanno describes them throwing stones, attacking in groups, and climbing cliffs nimbly. And Pliny's description of the pelts is not consistent with a gorilla's. Hanno's Gorillai were most likely chimpanzees, though baboons are also a possibility.

michael denny

I need peter Jackson to remake the movie Them! R rated preferably. I want to see an invasion of giant ants with modern tech.

michael denny

Hanno brought back the skins of large apes and described what he named gorillas from his voyage of the west African coast. He most certainly was describing gorillas or other large apes.

akaTheBAY-AY-RON

It's hilarious that you asked if Jack Black and Jack White have ever made music together (not sure if they've ever collabed in the past) but tonight, on the same day this video went live, Jack Black is hosting Saturday Night Live with musical guest Jack White. And Jack Black will be performing with him. I believe they're running with a "Black and white" color scheme too. I know is sounds like a super lame late April Fools joke, but it's really a thing https://www.nbc.com/nbc-insider/is-snl-new-tonight-april-4-2026-host-musical-guest

Hi KyloJames could you tell me which region you are located in? which browser and device you are using and if your browser has any extensions or plugins? as well as active vpn?

do you have any other browser available? just to check if the same thing happens on a different browser, or even a different device such as mobile? helps with eliminating possible causes.

2026-09-13 17:00 It’s a pity you missed the 20th Anniversary edition of King Kong, which improves some of the CGI, adds deleted scenes, and runs for nearly five hours.
2026-04-04 20:05

maikeru

ugh, the extended cut ruined T2 because it is horrible unlike the perfect theatrical version, yet on tv and pay tv they show only the dogshit extended version, soon everybody will only know that version and most reactors are "spreading" that version by reacting to it, unfortunately. so, when I hear something about additional/extened versions of what ever film, I'm like nah I'm out, don't wanna see it.

Jeff Smith

Gonna be honest, I saw this in theaters when it came out and I thought it was stupid. Watching it now, this movie is fantastic. Time to time I’ll throw it on. Jack black was surprisingly great in this.

Huckleberry lobo

Nacho Libre(2006) - to like Jack Black again The Frighteners(1996) - if you want to watch Peter Jackson do a movie under two hours plus Michael J Fox from Back to the Future. 🙌🏼🤣🤣

JayF

Now that you've watched this ridiculous version where, as you both noted, Watts would have been killed by the cartoonishly violent way Kong handled her, go back at some point to watch the 1976 version. It stars Jeff Bridges and Jessica Lang.

Jon Rainey

Ok, now you HAVE to watch Orange County, to see Colin Hanks and Jack Black team up again, only with the roles reversed (where Jack Black is the side kick to Colin Hanks).

Brandon

I thought for sure that George would reference the 'King Homer' segment in Treehouse of Horror. Homer not being able to climb the entire Empire State Building because of how out of shape he is and falling from the 2nd floor is such a great gag. "You look a little flushed. Maybe you should eat more vegetables and less people."

Simone's Coconut Squire

I’ve watched this movie 3 times and I’ve changed my mind every time. First I hated it, then I liked it, now… it’s meh. I liked some choices and hated others.

Dan Holmes

"Has Jack Black ever made music with Jack White" Yes actually :) "Jack Black and Jack White collaborated on music in 2019, culminating in the release of the song "Don't Blow It, Kage." The track was produced by White and performed by Tenacious D (Jack Black and Kyle Gass), featuring White's production and vocals. The song was recorded at White’s home studio in Nashville. "

PIG

I love Frighters :)

Dan Holmes

I hope you guys someday check out Naomi Watts' best role/film "I Heart Huckabees" It's insanity :)

Mike FromOz

Not gonna lie, I was wishing the thumbnail was George as Ann Darrow being held aloft by Simone as Kong.

James W.

Besides the romantic overtones folks inject into the Kong/Ann relationship, or whatever the female lead is for that version, with Jackson's Kong, i got the sense of interminable loneliness. Gorillas, regardless of their scale, are pack animals, super social. Kong has no family, no group, just an island full of enemies. He has to fight forever, basically. I feel like his previous sacrifices were just terrified and screaming, annoying even. I feel like he spares her largely because she isn't just a mewling victim. Edit: @simone Someone did kill count on the non-extended edition of 207. Even with extended can't be that many more kills.

ThetaSigmaTheOriginal

"Has Jack Black ever teamed up and made music with Jack White?" Yes, actually, they did a collab called "Jack Gray" (sounds like I'm joking, but I'm not).

Major Peril

Great reaction to an overly long, but good movie. Since you have already seen Godzilla Minus One (2023)… YES, excellent! I presume you may have also watched Godzilla (1954) at some previous point in time. So, why not go for the entire MonsterVerse? I would suggest maybe chronological timeline order (just my preference) if you decide to watch the Monarch TV series (some exposition about Monarch is revealed in the first two movies), otherwise watch them in release order, or whatever order. 😃 - Kong: Skull Island (2017) - Godzilla (2014) - Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (2015) (Series) - set after G-day 2014, but explores the history of Monarch from 1946 onward - Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) - Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) - Godzilla x Kong (2024)

REDR58

I agree. With most of these big remake I think it’s always best to watch the original first.

FranciscoGios

The time frame of this movie never bothered me because it's made by a popular director of the 2000s.

Richard Wakeling

Now you need to watch Kong: Skull Island. A VERY different but also excellent King Kong film. For my money, it also features one of the best deaths in recent cinema.

Chase Schleich

Jack Black and Jack White are literally the host of SNL tonight and did a joint musical number in the opening lol

Chase Schleich

The newer Kong: Skull Island is a very different story than this one and the original it was based on. The 2014 Godzilla is it's own story as well and then of course, the new Godzilla vs Kong movies are all continuations of those new stories. I do hope you get to that series of Kong, Godzilla, & Godzilla vs Kong movies. You have to watch them in the right order though since they eventually converge.

Monica Alarcon

LOL I'm watching right now!! Came here to see if anyone else mentioned. George's wish came true the day he posted it...

Perry Campbell

Hope they get to see the (1976 King Kong) Famous Makeup artist Rick Baker wore the ape suit!!!! Great actors Jessica Lang and Jeff Bridges was in it. With a sic sound track. Still my favorite Kong movie.

REDR58

Simone mentioned helicopters flying around Kong, which is the kind of aircraft only used in the 1976 movie (and the footage recycled for its sequel "King Kong Lives" (1986) with Linda Hamilton). Perhaps she saw that movie or at least that scene of it somewhere?

REDR58

George, the "heat map" Universal Logo you asked about was first used in 1997 up until 2012. It is a an enhanced/brighter/more colorful version of the 75th Anniversary logo from 1990 used through 1997. You can see all the logos and the years they were used here: https://logos.fandom.com/wiki/Universal_Pictures/On-Screen_Logos An explanation of the colors used is here: https://movies.stackexchange.com/questions/56524/what-are-the-colors-on-the-globe-in-the-90s-00s-universal-studios-logo

REDR58

I never saw this movi ein the theater and only watched it once before shortly after I bought the 2014 Blu-ray set with the theatrical/extended versions. The movie opens with scenes of what were called “Hoovervilles” or shantytowns, in this case set up in NYC’s Central Park. They are named for President Herbet Hoover who was President at the start of the Great Depression and who was often found at fault for it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hooverville Driscoll’s play for the “Federal Theatre” (“Federal Theatre Project”) was a government program that ran from 1935-1939: https://www.loc.gov/exhibits/federal-theatre-project/overview.html The filmmakers used 1930s era photography of New York City to remodel them with computers and make the city look more like it did back then. Simone, you said you liked Naomi Watts’ hat. The style of hat she is wearing is called a “cloche hat” which had its origins in France: www.henrihenri.ca/us/blogs/le-blogue-a-chapeaux-henri-henri/history-of-the-cloche-hat/ I think it’s still a great look today! "Vaudeville” seems to be generally pronounced as 2 syllables in the US and 3 in the UK. The “Venture” ship that is used in the movie was a 1950s era cargo vessel that was modified to look like a 1930s-era ship. It also seems to have at least 40 crewmembers. That seems like a lot for a ship of its size! 1 fathom is equivalent to 6 feet. How to take a sounding to find a depth in fathoms with a lead line (as seen in the movie): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCSQCuGnpYY Several of the ship’s crew and some of the main cast use M1928 Thompson submachine guns (produced in 1928) aka “Tommy Guns.” It appears that the crate aboard the “Venture” has about 24 of these weapons which is a LOT of automatic weapons for a group of about 40 men, especially civilians, never mind professional soldiers of the time! Likewise, the ship has a store of at least 8 Mauser Gewehr 1898 bolt-action rifles (produced in 1898). There are also 2 different kinds of pistols carried by the ship’s Captain Englehorn who has a Luger LP 08 and First Mate Hayes who uses a Colt M1911A1. So the S.S. Venture has a serious arsenal for the time, given its relatively small size and nearly every man can get a Tommy gun or rifle. It looks like a similarly-sized group of US Army soldiers in WW2 (3 Rifle Platoons with a total of 1 officer and 45 enlisted men, I think?) might have 3 automatic weapons and rifles for the rest of the men. The men of the Venture are armed to the teeth in comparison. How come the running on collapsing rocks here look so much better here than it does in The Battle of Five Armies movie? The Army fires First World War-era, truck-mounted Enfield 13-pdr 9-cwt Mk. I anti-aircraft cannon at Kong near the end of the movie. If they weren’t firing so wildly and inaccurately, they would probably blow a hole in Kong with one hit as they are firing shells that weigh just under 13 pounds and have a muzzle velocity between 1600 and 2200 feet per second (depending on the specific weapons), especially as we see that a missed shot takes out a good-sized chunk of that one building. The aircraft used to fire on Kong on top of the Empire State Building are US Navy Curtiss F8C-4 Helldiver armed with a pair of forward-firing 0.30 in (7.62 mm) M1919 Browning machine guns and a flexible 0.30 in (7.62 mm) Lewis gun fired by the rear gunner/observer. Those weapons would doubtless cause a lot more damage to Kong if he were real than we see in the movie. Speaking of the airplanes, Rick Baker, the special effects creator who has worked on many movies including “King Kong (1976), was one of the pilots and Peter Jackson and Frank Darabont (director of The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile and The Mist) played some of the Helldiver gunners. One of the full-scale Helldiver prop aircraft built for the movie (as none of the real aircraft still exist) can be seen at Hood Aerodrome in New Zealand: https://thevintageaviator.co.nz/projects/aircraft/curtiss-f8c-helldiver Jed Brophy who played various characters in The Lord the Rings movies and Nori in The Hobbit movies was one of the S.S. Venture crewman. Simone, the History of Yellow Cab Company goes back to 1907 in Chicago: http://www.encyclopedia.chicagohistory.org/pages/2912.html Speaking of other movies about animals you should watch Gorillas in the Mist (1988) with Sigourney Weaver playing the real-life Dian Fossey whose book was the basis of the movie. Fair warning, it is a somewhat difficult film to watch, but a good one. Anyway, all that overlong stuff aside, I think the movie is also a bit too long and drags out a bit and I much prefer the "Kong: Skull Island" movie from 2017. Watts is wonderful but I completely agree with S&G, the drawn-out death of Kong is too much for this. It's right on the edge of being in bad taste, I daresay. I get what Jackson was doing, but I think he went too far.

Pk

I watched this yesterday, And when you mentioned Jack White & Jack Black, I found it hilarious that they were both on SNL last night 😂!

Clipped

It would be a much better film if they had only 1) shortened it, and 2) Turned down the "omg let's go full ham on the CGI." Way down. It's just so much, all the effing time. The stampede sequence is ridiculous. But, Naomi Watts rules, as usual. She improves every film she's in. She had to do some truly goofy stuff in this movie while acting to a (presumably) a green tennis ball and she somehow pulled it off.

bdennis2004

I just saw the clip and came here to see if anybody had commented on it. I know they probably filmed it week ago, but George's timing was incredible!

Marko T.

I think its fun to watch but bad as a King Kong movie.

Marko T.

I think this Kong is still one of the best cgi creations ever. Howard Shore was originally supposed to be the composer for this. He even has a cameo as the conductor in the theatre scene. James Newton Howard did the music.

Tom Buckley

Watching this back with you I can't help but see kids if similarities between the action scenes here and the Hobbit. The scenes are a bit ridiculous, ott and the characters survive countless events that should kill them.

Matrim

A fathom is 6 feet (do y’all use feet? It’s just shy of 2 meters). So 25 fathoms is about 45ish meters.

Jeff K.

Mister Forbez - you just unlocked a memory for me. That’s exactly how I ended up with my copy, too. I suddenly remember switching from PS to Xbox specifically for the HD-DVD thing and now I recall that’s where my copy of this movie came from too.

Sam

They use metric, they are from Canada not the US.

Lucas

Must say the 1933 original is much better. Nowhere near as bloated and just better acted. The FX are also incredible given the time. I personally think these FX do look dated even for the time. Jurassic Park did a better job a decade earlier

Justin Leone

This movie definitely could have benefitted from leaving some bits on the cutting room floor. Some of the action setpieces worked, imo (like the bug scene, with the creepy quiet music and sense of overwhelming dread), while others were just shy of Looney Tunes (the stampede being the worst offender). And some were fine but went on a little too long. But overall it works, despite the somewhat plodding pace. I appreciate that Peter Jackson and crew swung for the fences. You can tell that he was committed to following up LotR with something spectacular, and no one involved, from the actors to the various variety of filmmakers, was phoning it in.

John Miller

Every version of Kong has had its ups and downs. The issue with this movie is that they did what allot of early 2000's movies did, they went a little GCI crazy. Cut out half the GCI scenes and this movie goes for 3 hours to 2 in no time.

Hasan Ahmad

Simone you should change your Phone passcode. you showed it live on stream.

blerbaberpaterb

....why would that matter?.... the only way you can use it is if you have the device itself....

Marko T.

Even Kong himself? I think he still looks amazing.

rictus grin

i hope you check out the original

rictus grin

some trivia you missed , in the scene where jack first goes into the hold there is a cage with Sumatran Rat-Monkey written on it this is a reference to one of Jacksons earlier movies Braindead AKA dead alive. and if i remember right a couple of original gas bomb props from the 1933 movie

Philipp Roensch

You say widely available on Prime, sorry to take my EU rant here, but Prime is loosing more and more movies and separating them into extra subscriptions. Got the Blu-ray though and can see the extended cut. That only hase more encounters with the large and ancient animals, and a few more of the crew dying - captured by Denham/Jack of course. The creatures are good looking indeed, its just the composition and digi-doubles of the people that aged not as well. Peter also loves his slow mo with heavy blur, a more disorienting choice, but artistic. Honestly though, this has it's merits, the time period is captured really well. The references to the classic well placed and the tragic payoff still works. Freaking creepy crawlers though.

gfixler

Women these days overwhelmingly choose the ape.

twstdwhspr80

The 1933 classic is much more of a monster movie than this one. It’s fun seeing a lot of tributes to the original cast, costumes, and score sprinkled in. The classic also has some of the best screams ever put to film (men & women). Thanks for the watch along.

Sumner Hayes

Most Canadians use imperial for height and weight. At the doctor's office they might record you as 180cm, but most people in casual conversation would say they're 5'11". Same with kg vs lbs for weight. So for something on the scale of 6', they'll know what it means. EDIT: Hah, just started the beginning of the Raging Bull reaction and George and Simone talk about how Canadians use both depending on the circumstance, including imperial for height.

Sumner Hayes

I discussed the pelts in my response above, they're one of the key indicators that it couldn't have been gorillas. This has been well-settled by historians, it's almost impossible that it was gorillas—almost certainly it was chimpanzees, with some chance it was baboons.

Marko T.

These are the King Kong movies: -King Kong (1933) -Son of Kong (1933) Toho made: -King Kong vs Godzilla (1962) -King Kong Escapes (1967) Paramount made a remake: King Kong (1976) King Kong Lives (1986) Then was this 2005 remake. Then Kong: Skull Island (2017) that is part of the Monsterverse. Then they made two Godzilla vs Kong movies.

Geoffrey Harris

You can definitely see Peter Jackson's horror heritage in this film. Have you seen his earlier, low budget movies?

The one thing I did quite like in Jackson’s interpretation which he did keep from the original is the light leaving his eyes when he died

12 years ago we went on a cruise to New Zealand which included a mini bus ‘Lord of the Rings’ tour. It turned out our bus driver was Hammond Peek, the sound mixer who won Academy Awards for this film and Return of the King. He kept us all entertained with great anecdotes while driving us around LOTR locations.

It's taken me ten plus years to watch this again because this movie breaks my heart, but it's still so good. Yes, it's too long and Jackson really needed to cut half an hour -- the island chase stuff is just interminable. And the physics bothers me in the same way The Hobbit movies physics did (although I love the Hobbit movies -- there are dozens of us!). There are too many close calls for my taste -- they're so constant and people should be dead 20 times over, including Ann Darrow. Also, I admit it, I cannot handle the insect pit scene at all and I fast forwarded this time because just NOPE. But. It has so many beautiful moments. The romance is fabulous -- Naomi Watts and Adrien Brody are both ridiculously beautiful in a classic, old-fashioned movie-star sense and have terrific chemistry. And some of the actors feel so 1930s -- Colin Hanks is just perfect for the period, and so are Jamie Bell (a wonderful actor who grew up from his Billy Elliot days!), Kyle Chandler, Thomas Kretschmann, and Evan Parke. And I thought Jack Black was great as the despicable director. I especially love how brave, plucky, and funny Ann Darrow is. Naomi Watts makes her so engaging, and her friendship with Kong is so darned sweet. I plotzed the moment she did the dance for him and watched the sunset. And the sliding on the ice moment! And I just love poor Kong so much. He's so beautifully acted (kudos Andy Serkis) and rendered, and he has so much soulfulness. The thing PJ does beautifully is how sad Kong looks... and how old. Simone is right -- he looks old, and tired, and lonely. So everything after the sunset moment -- when we see him as a person -- is tragic. Because when he goes to New York, there's no hope. He's doomed. So it's all really heartbreaking -- even after he finally finds Ann (a gorgeous moment). There's nowhere for him to go. That makes the iconic Empire State building climb even more sad because where can Kong go? Nowhere. Like George says, it's hard to watch because we're watching them torture an animal. If you watch the original, which has real grandeur and power -- it is however much more about the triumph of men over a savage beast -- much more the actual feel of Jack Black's show within the movie. There is far less acknowledgement or understanding of Kong as a trapped and sentient animal simply doing what he does. But this is a great movie in the old-fashioned sense -- thrills, chills, heartbreak, adventure, romance.
