Here in Australia, we also do the "Yeah, nah", "Nah, yeah" but the other is "Yeah, nah, get fucked!" 😂 Maple syrup rolled on a stick in snow was something I saw as a kid on an episode of Sesame Street, and I have wanted to try it ever since. It looked so good! Our version of "have you ever eaten" is usually a chiko roll, vegemite on toast (promite is better), or done a tim-tam slam. "Have you ever been hissed at by a Canadian goose?" - Aussie version is "Have you ever been swooped by a maggie (magpie)?" Australian regional nicknames - Queensland: Banana-benders, Cane Toads South Australia: Crow-eaters Western Australia: Sandgropers, Westralians Victoria: Mexicans (due to being south of the border), Cabbage Gardeners/Patchers, Yarra-yabbies New South Wales: Cockroaches, Cornstalks Tasmania: Taswegians, Gumsuckers, Apple Eaters Northern Territory: Top Enders, Territorians, Dust-eaters Australian Capital Territory (ACT): Actarians, Roundabout-abouters (because of all the roundabouts designed into the place)

Dwight Scarn

Jake Lamotta is considered to have the best chin in boxing. He was only knocked down once in his 106th fight which I believe is his 2nd to last fight.

Cc Decc

Tsk tsk, George getting a little lazy and just using Simone's passport photo.

Jimmie V

Still the prefer The Elephant Man over this as THE black and white biopic nominated for best picture in 1980.

Life in the cave of Garanoga

Oh please put "Stardust" on the list. De Niro's role in that is a wonderful contrast to this role.

2026-09-13 17:00 I hope you do spell "favourite" with a U, since Canada’s native language follows British English conventions.

I said yes to all but four. I'm from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

TylerNorCal

This is a movie that's rough the first watch, but gets more and more hilarious on rewatch 😂

Cc Decc

Pfft! Damn Brits can't even spell their American right. 😁

Matt Blanchette

One of many times in which DeNiro wrecked his body for the process of making a film. And MANY MORE to come!

Matt Blanchette

Don't forget the Man Without Fear is in it, too... ;-)

Carlos H

The return of Simone De niro! or is it Robert Di mone?

OddThomas

For more De Niro: Stardust, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994)

TheLeftPecOfTheLord

It’s crazy to me that this is where De Niro’s Oscar wins stopped, he should have at least 5 or 6 on the shelf with Taxi Driver, Cape Fear, Irishman and Killers of the Flower Moon. A truly generational talent

Cc Decc

Just to step in it a bit -- but after George mentioned early the normal expectations of a sports movie, which are more or less correct, I would argue that Raging Bull, a movie about a real life sports person, was really not a sports movie. Its a partial biography of a not terribly admirable guy who happened to be in sports. Even his most admirable sporting traits -- toughness and relentlessness -- really stem from his underlying personality traits that caused him to make such a mess of his life. So this is a movie taking a sanitized (the subject himself not only wrote the book, but got to serve as a consultant on it) look at that life. Its not really interested in the boxing so much, nor the work, or training or anything else, only shows snippets, and then just flashes placards of half of them.

REDR58

Pffft. More needless, extraneous letters from the Mother Country.

That mob guy Joey beats looks like he’d have some thoughts about grilled cheese…

TylerNorCal

It wasn't his father's apartment, it was him and his wife's...he just told Vickie that so she didn't know he was married haha.

Cc Decc

BTW, that question about what La Motta was like as a young man -- that's likely where the rage started. He came from nothing, and was a dirt poor reform school kid who committed virtually every kind of crime before 18, including once almost killing a shopkeeper with a lead pipe. His dad pimped him out in kid-boxing matches against neighborhood kids, and then used the money to pay rent. As soon as he was legally of age, he was in the ring. And all those hints that made you nervous of his conduct toward women -- that was Martin Scorcese, mob director, pulling punches (ha) and sanitizing things so he could have LaMotta's approval. His laundry list of behavior toward women included beatings, the r word, 15yr olds, knocking his first wife unconscious and thinking he'd killed her etc. You repeatedly called him an anti-hero. The hero part could be dropped.

I can't be the only one who pretends to not currently wanting to go through a door when someone is holding it too far away. Like suddenly stop, turn around halfway, pet my pockets, go some steps back or so.

This the anti Rocky movie I love because I hate Rocky

djKENTO

I'm sorry but as a Californian... the Double Double is ours and it's the 2 patty 2 slices of cheese burger at In-N-Out. PERIOD. And In-N-Out is nearly 15 years older than Tim Hortons. Fuck you timmy and your tim bits! /s

Brandon

Canadian stuff: I actually prefer milk in a bag. A 3 pack of milk bags is cheaper than buying cartons. I transfer it into a glass pitcher with a lid. I HATE how people will just cut the corner off the bag and leave it one of those containers made for milk bags without pinching it shut. The idea that some people only have ice cream in spring/summer is baffling to me. I live indoors and I'll eat it when I want. As a kid I assumed everyone had Smarties and M&Ms as options. I have family in the US and whenever they visit, my cousins stock up on Smarties before going home. They like them better and can't get them in their home state. I also spell "favourite" with the "u" and hate how any internet-based spell check will underline the word in red like I'm wrong... which is what it's doing right now. Edit: IMO a double double is fine, but if you put more than 2 sugars in your coffee, you aren't a coffee drinker. You're just using coffee as your preferred method of sugar delivery.

Brandon

But is it known as a Double Double nationwide? 😉

djKENTO

No but to be fair if we just include just the west coast it still outnumbers all of Canada. And that’s without Texas which also has the better better double double.

2026-09-05 05:00 It seems like you both missed that this is a true story. You’re comparing it to fictional boxing movies, but this is about the real life of Jake LaMotta. He wasn’t written as an “anti-hero,” he was a deeply flawed, abusive man who also happened to be a talented boxer. That’s the point of the film. And just to clear up the boxing part, yes, you can hit anywhere above the belt with your fists. The main illegal shots are to the back of the head or neck (rabbit punches) and the kidney area. Upper chest shots are completely legal and unavoidable in a real fight. You also don’t need to understand boxing to grasp the concept of throwing a fight. It’s simple: someone pays you to lose. They literally explained that leading up to the fight. If you missed it, you just weren’t paying attention. Back then, boxing had heavy mob involvement. Fighters, refs, and judges were often on the take. It was a dirty business, and the movie doesn’t hide that. That said, it’s still a great film. I saw it as a kid and loved it. Same with One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. The fact that those kinds of serious, adult movies could still hold my attention back then says a lot about how well they were made.

Okay, the Canadian quiz...1. it has been confirmed but Canada is actually another planet. 2. Americans do not apologize to inanimate objects they bump into, they curse them out.

blerbaberpaterb

....??? terms like anti hero, anti villain and so on have nothing to do with whether or not a character is based on a real person.... those area story telling terms, and this movie is telling a story....and how does them using fictional boxing movies to compare mean they dont know its a true story?? they literally point at the start of the movie that they think its real.... up until this point, theyve only see fictional boxing movies, what else can they use to compare with besides what they know..?

Dwight Scarn

She needs to be De Niro for halloween.

Glenner7

As an older Canadian I got them all, of course, with the same answers as Simone (except that I have had a beaver tail and maple syrup on a stick - "la tire"), but George, why so dismissive? There's nothing wrong with bagged milk.

James MacDonald

At the start of George's quiz to Simone, I wish he'd asked: "Who is your daddy and what does he do?"

Holy Squire

beautiful movie with some deeply felt grace bestowed on Jake at the end.

Cc Decc

Some deeply felt grace bestowed on Jake's head by...Jake. He literally wrote the book it was based on. 😁 P.S. I gotta write me an autobiography some day and have it made into a movie that says I'm not such a bad guy. The only problem is...who can we find that is remotely good enough looking to play me?

Pam Nail

Not a prosthetic or fat suit. DeNiro gained sixty pounds to play the older version of LaMotta.

s0rd3z

I lost count but it was a yes to almost all of those except bag milk and a hockey riot (though I have seen them on TV watching CBC/CHSJ growing up). Not surprising since I do live in an area surrounded east, west & north by Canada. I can cross the border in about 20m and my home town Tim Hortons (edit: went down a bit of a rabbit hole and there are way more Timmy's in the states than I realized) is about 10m from my house. Once got chased by geese riding my bicycle through a potato field as a kid, also almost hit a moose that walked out in front of me while riding a bicycle home from my grandparents.

MacGuffinStuff

The Double Double is Number 1 on the menu and Number 1 in our hearts, it's just good. And the meal is still one of the best prices. Their drive thru system, that's efficiency.

JoeE

The mob guy played coach on cheers

djKENTO

The fact it’s cheaper than McDonald’s and staying cheaper… incredible business.

REDR58

Can you imagine Lynch directing a boxing movie?

REDR58

I curse at potholes every time I drive over one. Also curse at myself at the same time. Finally I curse at the streets department. Come on PennDOT! Fix the roads!

MacGuffinStuff

This is one of those movies for me, when I saw it for the first time I realized there were "levels to this filmmaking thing". Sorry that's kind of a boxing reference, pretty big boxing fan actually, "the loneliest sport". That's I guess why some boxing movies are so compelling, the usuallly silent, painful, lone struggle, Rocky was a loner, Jake wanted to go it alone but they're like two different sides, one brings people to him (Ali had that quality, people loved him, some didn't), but Rocky was a simple man with a pure heart, Ali was very intelligent (When We Were Kings, documentary, watch it); the other is Jack, a real and really simple but complicated, fucked up man, who drives people away because he's got the Hollowness. Hollowness or there's a better word, but, that thing that makes you hungry, but can never be satisfied and eats you up in the end, or can. It makes great fighters but sad lives. A lot of the best fighters had very hard lives as kids. Mike Tyson, Roberto Duran, Johnny Tapia, many others, these are fighters who had both economic hardship and serious abandonment issues among other things. Other boxers became great simply because they had to eat, literally. Roberto Duran is in that category too, he used to fight in boy fights for money to feed his family in the slums of Panama City (Manos de Piedra, a movie about him, Ana De Armas btw). Jack Dempsey was a hobo, he would fight after not eating for days, and win. Cinderella Man...

MacGuffinStuff

.... And just the greatest living Mexican boxer (he's old now and his son isn't as good), possibly ever (sadly we'll never know what Salvador Sánchez would have accomplished, he died at 23 in a car accident), but, JULIO CÉSAR CHÁVEZ, from Sinaloa, México. When he was a boy he lived in train box cars with his family, they were so poor. He had to work but he also made time to train and if you watch old clips of him box you realize why he is considered the epitome of the Mexican style, he is relentless, he fights every fight like his family will starve if he doesn't win. Went 90 fights undefeated professionally before one draw (that he probably lost, honestly), lost a couple more before retiring forever beloved by both Mexicans and Chicanos, because he took all comers, didn't pick and chose opponents like some boxers, he'd fight anyone. Stamina, heart (desire aka balls, GANAS in Spanish), chin of iron, simple and smart defense, relentless pressure and hit like a mule kicks. Mexican style of boxing. The Russians etc., also really good at this, they're style is similar. When Russians (all the Stans included) and Mexicans fight, it's always a no one backs up battle.

REDR58

Tommy Como, as played by Nicholas Colasanto, who was Coach.

MacGuffinStuff

You guys really should watch "The Fighter" too though, I know it didn't do so well on the poll, but it's one of my favorite Christian Bale performances. Also based on a true story. Was not what I expected because I'm a boxing fan and I knew of those boxers, and the movie wasn't what I expected and hoped it would be, but it surprised me and I liked it actually. They just didn't show the fight I was expecting, but that particular fight (one of the best I've ever seen btw) wasn't important to the story.

Jonathan Eaton

BTW the speech De Niro is doing in the mirror at the very end, is actually a Marlon Brando scene from the movie On The Waterfront.

REDR58

He did indeed gain the weight, but De Niro was also wearing a prosthetic nose: "A third-generation master of makeup and prosthetics, (Michael) Westmore brought forensic precision to the project. He took facial casts from LaMotta and used them to design a library of prosthetics that charted the boxer’s evolving damage – from cauliflower ears and a broken nose to the deepening bruises of a man aging into his pain. For each fight, Westmore prepared appliances that could split, swell or spurt blood on cue. Between takes, he oiled De Niro’s skin to keep the prosthetics intact and ensured nothing slipped under the hot lights or from the actor’s sweat-drenched frame. Westmore’s work wasn’t just cosmetic; it was structural. He helped sculpt the performance." https://intelligentcollector.com/the-craft-of-transformation-inside-the-personal-archive-of-raging-bull-makeup-artist-michael-westmore/

REDR58

It’s interesting because the captions show the name as “La Motta” where in reality the name was spelled as “LaMotta” George, Cathy Moriarty who played the 15-year old Vickie (spelled “Vikki” in real life) was 17/18 at the time of filming: * * * * * Cathy Moriarty has never seen Raging Bull. “I mean, I’ve seen parts of it,” she says. “Just not in its entirety. Not in one sitting.” This is astonishing: Moriarty’s performance as Vikki LaMotta, wife of feral boxer Jake, is unforgettable. It is, of course, a savage film – but that’s not why she avoided it. “It was the first time I’d heard my voice recorded,” she explains. “The film played and I said, ‘Who is that?’ They said, ‘It’s you.’ And I said, ‘That is not what I sound like. That sounds like a truck driver.’” The voice remains a wonder: a rasping aide-memoire of old New York. “I like it now,” she says. “It just took me a while.” ..... ...She had a vague awareness of who De Niro was, though Scorsese had passed her by. Her tastes ran more to the golden age of Hollywood. “I did not have a clue. But I also had no fear: I was 17 and I was better than you.” Filming took more than a year. “Bobby taught me to listen and that was important, because if there was a script on Raging Bull, no one used it. He was good to me. Joe and Marty, too. I knew people would look at these older men and this teenage girl like, ‘Oh, I get it.’ But they were gentlemen. They also yelled at me when I needed yelling at.” Did she yell back? “Of course.” https://www.theguardian.com/film/2015/oct/01/cathy-moriarty-raging-bull-de-niro-interview Moriarty was in Kindergarten Cop as the blonde mother of Sylvester who tries to come onto Kimble (at 0:55): https://youtu.be/tL8mbyE3xkA?si=fwGTNMM_88l8t3Sf Theresa Saldana plays Joey’s wife, Lenora. Some of you might recognize her from “The Commish”: https://youtu.be/CmY8h9Nrqfc?si=2eBd2kRrhpp4gfnI Notice the “Is there someone else you should call” sign on the phone when Jake calls his brother. I can no reference to that phrase other than a Tumblr site and a photo on Flickr. I wonder if it was a message from the owner of the establishment to a potential caller to think twice before calling someone he or she should not call? Very interesting. You didn’t notice the very distinctive voice of Martin Scorsese who comes into the dressing room at the end of the movie! He often has a cameo in his own movies, like Hitchcock. Here, he is just half-visible at the extreme left side of frame in the mirror, wearing a beard: www.slashfilm.com/794639/the-martin-scorsese-cameo-you-may-have-missed-in-raging-bull/ Raging Bull was referenced in the Season 8, episode 3 of The Simpson, “The Homer They Fall”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHTxOlFfUa0 Anyway, first-time watch for me as well. Sheesh. Talk about entitlement. Some men should not be in allowed to be in relationships. Period. I find La Motta to be entirely loathsome. Knowing abusive, manipulative people like this, I don’t feel sorry for him in the slightest.

REDR58

A movie they should definitely watch.

REDR58

In the US here, I'd prefer milk to still be available in glass bottles as wax paper carton and whatever milk bags are made of are probably not easily recyclable, but glass is heavier and fragile. Back in the early to mid 1980s our family was still getting milk (and eggs, and other dairy products) delivered to the house. We were provided with an foam-insulated, thin galvanized metal box that was kept near the door and the local dairy would drop off the stuff and load in into the box. Sometimes, the grocer would bring all the groceries into the house and load the fridge! It's funny because all of that sort of went away by the 1990s and 2000s, but I'm back to using a weekly grocery delivery service (but they don't come in and load the fridge!). The only smarties that I've ever had: https://www.mashed.com/192309/the-untold-truth-of-smarties-candies/

Brandon

My Aunt's house has a milk delivery box that's built right into the wall next to her front door. She lives on the outskirts of town where the houses are much farther apart. They were the last of the people still getting home milk deliveries when it stopped in the 80's. I'm not quite old enough to remember it, I think I missed it by 5 years or so. 😅 Edit: Oh, and we have those exact candies as well. Here in Canada they're called Rockets.

DaveJ

Jake Lamotta was quite the character even up until he died. Ill never forget when Doug Stanhope started talking about him being his neighbour. It ended up on one of his specials: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UAYercoHaw Doug wasnt lying bout Jake liking that line about Sugar Ray Robinson..seeing Patton Oswalt on the couch laugh after he repeats it for the fourth time always cracks me up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyN5EhQERh0

PIG

Having both of them as neighbors is a whole movie in of its self 😂

Jack P

The boogie nights ending is a legit callout. You should check out way more Paul Thomas Anderson movies on the channel. The Master has a scene that matches the jail scene that was so powerful in this movie. It also features the best co-lead performance collective of any movie. Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman both give the best performances of their legendary careers in the same movie

erosennin

I didn't know Smarties were canadian. We had them in Germany when I was a kid in the 80s. Probably still have them today, unless M&M's have completely pushed them off the market. I remember they came in a round paper box that was great for all sorts of crafting and play purposes^^

erosennin

100% agree. That movie doesn't get enough love. Christian Bale is so great in it. I've had the misfortune of knowing a bunch of crackheads in real life (family and friends) and Christian Bale does a fantastic job with his mannerisms, the way he speaks, moves and looks, it's insane.

REDR58

Those in-wall delivery doors are really cool. I meant to add a link for the one I was talking about, and you can see a picture of a similar one here: https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/abbotts-milk-dairy-metal-delivery-127319278 Same dairy we bought from too. Turns out you can still buy modern equivalents! I had no idea but I shouldn’t be surprised (first one I found): https://longmontdairy.com/porch.html When I was visiting family in Northern Mexico in 1993, they didn’t get milk delivery. They got cases of Coca Cola delivered every few days, glass bottles in big metal racks!

Adam Wetstein

Actually British. Most of a Canadian candy was originally Cadbury products

Deadly Ramon

The extent of my Canadian leanings is listening to Canadian hard rock and heavy metal bands like Rush, Triumph, Moxy, 3 Inches of Blood, Exciter, Voivod, Anvil, Skull Fist, and others.

Deadly Ramon

For more Scorcese/De Niro/Pesci action, please react to The Irishman.

Cory Garron

I don't think they are strictly Canadian, I think they have them in Australia and the UK. But they differ from the powdery ones in the USA, which are the same as what we call "Rockets".

Cory Garron

Milk in bags is more enviromentally friendly! That said, I'll never buy 4L of milk again (1 US Gallon is 3.7777' litres), so it's all cartons for me, whichever style has the best date on it.

Deadly Ramon

About Scorsese being the Mount Rushmore of directors: Look up the lyrics to King Missile's song called Martin Scorcese. The band had a minor hit in the mid-90s called Detachable Penis. It even had an MTV video that received some modest rotation.

Deadly Ramon

I had a special edition of this movie on DVD a couple of decades ago. If I recall correctly, in a behind the scenes feature, De Niro is quoted as saying that he took a couple of months off during the film's production to move to France and eat 3 times a day in order to gain 60 pounds for the latter part of the film.

Matt Blanchette

Ah, yes... Michael Westmore, who later went on to design TNG alien makeup.

Cory Garron

You put the bag in a specific style pitcher (which every Canadian household has at least one), snip the corner of the bag, and pour. https://share.google/JrrTHiB1Ax2XkdBZZ My grandmother used to buy bags for a bit in the late 80s. Actually everyone did for a few years then. I haven't seen anyone with bagged milk in nearly 35 years though. I think its mostly an Ontario thing.

MugBarron21

Yea DeNiro’s freak out scene in the jail cell is powerful.

Philipp Roensch

Canadian questionaire from my central European side: 1) no, I say "excuse me" 2) nope 3) nuja 4) yes, delicious. 5) nope 6) no 7) YES 8) Yes, they rule here as well. 9) Yes, got heat. 10) Yes, there is an eco brand here. 11) Yes 12) No, the game was boring. 13) Yes, oh no, not the salad, no. 14) Yes 15) Never 16) Wachsmalstifte 17) Yes, tasty stuff 18) No 19) No? 20) Neu-finnland, sometimes^^ 21) No 22) Nice beaver!

Philipp Roensch

Talking about the film though: Great stuff, classic male toxicity and delusional insecurity. I guessed by now, you know Scorsese's favorite subject^^. I would not want generalize the issues and flaws these men exhibit, but it feels quite real and painted so straight it hurts. A raging red flag indeed. It of course looks great, smart stylistic choice and the brutality really hits.
