The scene of Carmela talking to Dr Krakower is one of the best in the show. We all love Carm thanks to Edie Falco’s incredible performance and Tony just being a bad husband, but we all forget how incredibly complicit she is. She may be upset with all the goomars and business priorities , but she loves this lifestyle, and hates that Krakower is holding a mirror up to her.

Fun fact: Junior’s cancer doctor is played by the same actor that plays one of Walt’s cancer doctors in Breaking Bad! I love when shows and movies do subtle little references like that

At my most broke, I spent a month straight eating Campbell’s spaghetti and meatballs, straight from the can, a day.

Hah they didn't react at all to what I think is one of the funniest things this show ever did. "You gotta bee on your hat" *whack*

The Big Mouth Billy Bass toy reminded Tony of the dream he had about Pussy as a talking fish when he was wrestling with having to kill him. Edit: I got ahead of myself and mentioned something from a later episode. 😅 When Carmela was with Dean Ross he mentioned that his family name was Rosetti, but it got changed by the government when his family came over. Apparently that's just a myth and nothing like that ever happened at Ellis Island with people's surnames. We saw something similar happen in Godfather 2 when a young Vito had his name changed to Corelone when the agent hears the name of his hometown as his surname and it got changed instantly.

:20 I can't hear George's chair squeak.

My worst attempt at making a struggle meal was when I had some condiments, mostly different types of mustard, and 3 lemons. I had no clue what to do, so I made... Leom Soup™, my god was that horrid. Could not get more than a few spoons down before I decided I didn't need food that day.

Johnny Saks is from a New York family. NY families are in charge. All of the other families answer to them. The five families (plus one or two families from different cities at some points in history) make up the commission, so all other families technically need to get permission from them for certain things, like making new members or whacking certain levels of made guys. Also, in this specific case, Johnny Saks mentioned that the deal that Ralphie is helping with will make millions, and they're in business together (Johnny, Tony, Ralphie, etc), so Johnny's main play here is to get then to resolve their differences so they can make money. That's why he's butting in.

Dr Krakower's short scene is one of the best in the whole series. Wish he'd been a recurring castmember.

When Silvio mentioned people dying of heart disease he says "Don something... producer of The Simpsons." He's talking about Don Simpson, a producer that had a partnership with Jerry Bruckheimer before he died in the 90's. He was behind Top Gun, Days of Thunder, The Rock and Beverly Hills Cop and several more. His death was heart failure brought on by massive substance abuse. Misspoken words and names is a running theme with this show. I think it's something that was really amusing to David Chase and the other writers.

Pretty much everything he says is funny 😂

"My nephew is a cunt-hair away from owning North Jersey. I'M that cunt-hair!" is a personal favorite from this week's batch of episodes. 😂

Personally I think it's a lot more impactful that he wasn't. He shows up, he rejects all of the material pressure that someone like Tony exerts on everyone in his orbit ("I won't take blood money") which is specifically what keeps Carm in his orbit herself, tells her exactly what she needs to hear for the one and only time in her life, and then tells her to get out and either act on it or don't but she can never say nobody told her.

I don't want to be rude, but Jesus Christ, Simone, can you please answer a question without saying 'I don't know' at the end? It drives me crazy

Life in the cave of Garanoga

My go to struggle food was simple. Peanut butter sandwiches. My parents' friend worked at a bakery and would give me and my roommates bags full of stale donuts and breads so I'd buy a big jar of cheap dry ass peanut butter and go to town. My worst struggle food was the same thing when I'd try peanut butter on some random stale muffin or something and it did not go together well lol. But hey that ish fueled me through lots of long hours. Another struggle food was whatever food I could snatch from work that was passed date or old. I ate lunch from my own pocket literally many times with biscuits and such stuffed in my work pants.

The connection between the Kennedys, Hoffa, and the Teamsters is part of the film The Irishman. Well worth watching because it completes Scorsese, De Niro and Pesci's gangster trilogy (Goodfellas, Casino, The Irishman).

I can relate to George's work story at the beginning^^ I've been working in gamedev for over 20 years now and I very vividly remember my 20s being full of 80-100h work weeks with barely any sleep, lots of energy drinks, weed, alcohol and partying. we used to have towers of beer cases in the office kitchen and one fridge dedicated to beers. my lead had a bottle of vodka in his desk drawer. we had office parties, we had team outings and company parties that went into the morning hours, went home to shower and back into the office. I'm 42 now, the company is bigger, the parties are fewer and less extreme, but the hours are better too. I rarely make more than the 40h I'm supposed to. I guess that's the same experience most people go through to varying degrees. Gen Z don't really party hard anymore. barely any of my younger colleagues smoke or drink and us old farts don't have the energy or time anymore^^ We have showers in the office now, but no one stays long enough anymore or parties through the night, so the only ones using them are people who come to work by bike.

Episode 7 Second Opinion While Junior is in surgery, he hallucinates the newspaper with the headline, "Soprano Wins Freedom: Indicts Nephew Witness Weds Angie Dickinson." Junior has mentioned Dickinson before. In the first season, when he was in prison, one of the Feds told Junior "We want Johnny Sack." Junior answered, "I want to fuck Angie Dickinson. See who gets lucky first." Dickinson is a retired actor who was born in 1931 and she was considered quite the beauty in her youth. That was her real picture in the newspaper photo and you can see more photos of her here: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/celebrity/angie_dickinson/pictures I like how U2's "Mysterious Ways" was playing at the strip club when Tony beat the hell out of Georgie with the Big Mouth Billy Bass. The business with Junior talking to Tony in the elevator about the Kennedy family and the Teamsters, that was Robert F. Kennedy, brother of President John F. Kennedy. RKF (father of the current antivaxer/lunatic and United States Secretary of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr) was the United States attorney general during during the presidency of his brother and RFK made it his mission to bring prosecution against organized crime and the Teamsters Union. In particular, he went after Jimmy Hoffa who was the president of the Teamsters.

That sort of thing happened in my extended family, but not at Ellis Island. When one of my uncles joined the US Army in the late 1950s/early 1960s, the "V" in his surname was apparently confused with and changed to a "W" and he never got it corrected. So his wife and all of his children and their children spell their surname **W****** while everyone else in the family spells the name **V******! My middle name is also misspelled on my Social Security Card.

Joe Pantoliano (Ralph) was really good in Bound (1996) Crime/Thriller with Jennifer Tilly and Gina Gershon.

I also love during Junior's hallucination we hear him repeating "peppers and eggs, peppers and eggs". Even while he's in an altered state he's still thinking "peppers and eggs, that's what I shoulda had"

The scene between Carmela and her therapist is one of my favorite scenes in the entire series. The advice he gives to Carmela is steeped in Jewish philosophy, and was specifically written as a Jewish character with a Jewish actor (They first approached a different Jewish actor who declined because he wasn't "the right Jew" for the role and they switched to Sully Boyar). Livingston, where he has his office, has a large Jewish population. Jewish philosophy has a very different perspective on "sin" than Christianity. "Sin" doesn't exist as a thing in and of itself, no action (NO action) is INHERENTLY sinful. It's all about what the impact is on the world. Intention is almost irrelevant (not completely irrelevant, but way in the back). Did you hurt somebody? It was bad. Did you help somebody? It was good. The classic Jewish story to explain it goes like this: A rich man goes to a rabbi and says "Rabbi, I want to do something good with my money, so I want to build an orphanage." The rabbi congratulates him, and says that this is a wonderful idea and he will get much applause and praise from the community. A few days later the rabbi bumps into the rich man and asks how the orphanage is coming along. Here the rich man says that he thought about it, and he realized that the only reason he was going to build the orphanage was for the praise and accolades. Since he didn't have truly righteous intentions, he decided not to do it. To which the rabbi said "Do you think the children care what your intentions are? BUILD THE ORPHANAGE!" Here, the psychiatrist points out that it doesn't matter how guilty Carmela feels about everything, or how much soul-searching she does, as long as she is enabling Tony in his crimes then she is a part of the problem. The "Why" doesn't really matter. And he says that he can't force her to do anything, but he can tell her straight-up. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The relationship between the Soprano Family and the New York Families mirror the relationship between New Jersey and New York itself. NJ and NY are both states, equal in the eyes of the law. Both have representation in the Federal Government of the USA, both have their own Governors that are equal in all ways in authority and relations between other states... ...but NY is bigger. NY has more people. NY is more famous. If you travel to other countries outside of the USA, people have heard of New York. New York City is one of the "capitals of the world". When the governments of New York and New Jersey deal with each other, NY doesn't have any authority over NJ, but that doesn't mean that they don't have any POWER over NJ. Last year (in real life), New York City implemented "congestion pricing" tolls for driving in certain areas of Manhattan. When this was first proposed the NJ government protested because of the impact that it will have on NJ residents who visit NYC but NJ won't see any benefit from the money. They negotiated for years, and went back and forth. At the end of it all NY agreed to reduce the cost of the tolls, but they still went ahead and did it. Tony Soprano is Boss of the family, and that means that there is nobody over him. He is equal to any other mob boss you want to name. The New York families have no authority over him...but NY is bigger. NY has more people. And even though NY doesn't have authority over NJ, that doesn't mean they don't have power.

I have something similar with my date of birth on one of my credit cards. No matter how many times I've tried to correct it, it never seems to go into effect and the wrong date remains.

Similar with my dad’s grandfather, who came over from Eastern Europe around the turn of the century. He changed his surname from an obviously Jewish one ending in “-man” to one that sounded more Anglo still ending in “-man”, but did so of his own accord to fit in, it wasn’t something forced at Ellis Island.

Episode 8 He is Risen That is Annabella Sciorra playing Gloria and she was in "Cop Land" (1997) with Sylvester Stallone. The year 2000 Mercedes-Benz SL 600 that Tony takes a test drive to his boat in with Gloria had a MSRP of about $129,595 US when new or about $177481 CAD. Today, that is about $250,625 US or $343,237 CAD. Today you can get a nice one of that era for under $30,000 US depending on model year and mileage.

Struggle meals are still delicious to me sometimes, but invariably unhealthy AF. Like fried boloney on a corn tortilla, or government cheese quesadillas, FIDEO (a really cheap kind of Mexican fried noodle soup, with some tomato sauce and onion, a potato maybe, salt and pepper). Tasty but not filling. Huevos con Weenie is still my favorite, you just fry some sliced weenies and then toss in some eggs (and curse the genitals of someone who has done you or your familia wrong 😂 joking), scramble it all up, add some ketchup or hot sauce, whatever you have, throw some cheese on it if you got it and it's 🤌

I was waiting for S3 E7 -- the actor who plays the Dean (who hits up Carmela for a huge contribution) is Frank Wood. I went to college with Frank and acted with him. The fun part of this scene is that Frank Wood and Edie Falco acted together in a play called SIDE MAN -- Frank won the Tony award for it. They played a married couple. I'm sure that Edie Falco got him the gig to play the Dean based on their previous work together.

The funny part about a mobster like Junior being hot for Angie Dickinson is she was best known for playing Sgt Pepper on a show called Police Woman. The original female cop show that was the precursor to shows like Charlie's Angels.

two things about ep7 1. I think Tony is fucking with Carmela over the orange juice. he gets this little smirk when he's about to bust someone's balls, and he definitely knows exactly what buttons to push with Carm. I think he's taken aback by the severity of her reaction, not so much the reaction itself. 2. I think Carmela is stunned by the fact that the therapist held a mirror up to her and made her confront, really confront, just how tied up she is in Tony's bullshit. so much so that it isn't just his bullshit, it's their bullshit. she's always considered herself a good person who loves a bad man, but would a good person turn a blind eye while Tony hurt people? would a good person spend his blood money? would a good person stay quiet when she suspects he had Pussy killed? That's why the look she gives him is so interesting. I think if Tony put his foot down and said no to the 50k, she would've left the next day. but he doesn't. he realizes it's important to her, and he agrees. in his own fumbling, bumbling way, Tony tries to put her at ease, to make her feel better. even though she doesn't answer the therapist when he fires back with "how's that working out," she can see then and there that the therapy is actually working. Tony is trying to change. and I think this allows her to give herself permission to stay and still consider herself a good person, to play the long-suffering wife because if she just keeps at it, she might just change Tony for the better after all. and then she didn't waste the last 20 years standing beside a monster. no, she was trying to make him better, and that makes her a good person.

Angela D. Mitchell

Personally, I always had a crush on James Gandolfini -- so what if he's "fat and balding?" I'm not alone in thinking Tony's genuinely attractive (aside from what a terrible person Tony is), and the show knows it. It's charisma, it's confidence, and he's just an attractive big guy. (Speaking of attractive, Annabella Sciorra is just so incredibly stunning. ) If it helps -- Johnny Sack describes his wife as a "hoofer" -- i.e., a dancer (or former dancer). And I gotta say, it's incredibly rich of the show's male characters (especially) to mock Ginny for her weight. Grr. Meanwhile, it looked like you guys missed that in that opening scene in the first episode, Tony was upset over the Billy Bass singing fish because he flashed on his dream about the talking fish that told him that Pussy was betraying him. So Pussy is on his mind the rest of the episode, making him angrier. I laughed out loud at none of the men knowing what size shoe their women wore. But I've never liked Paulie. He's well-acted, but also a mean, nasty, crude little man with a fragile ego. And sad to see Christofuh slapping Adrianna around again already. As far as Junior -- Simone, there's something called a "tumor board" that happens with high-risk cancer patients or difficult cases. That's what we were seeing with Junior's doctor. My stepfather had the same thing happen with his laryngeal cancer. In the scene with Dr. K, I enjoyed seeing Carm having to face her own culpability and the part she plays in Tony's life. But I did question his approach with her because I just didn't find it very psychologically useful. Carm isn't going to nuke her life to feel better. And while she will remain a massive hypocrite (of course), it was weirdly poignant to see her huddled on the sofa, momentarily facing the emptiness of her choices.
