What are your guys thoughts. Is it cheating to log single Sherlock episodes on Letterboxd?

TheLeftPecOfTheLord

I log TV stuff on Letterboxd just to keep a record of when I watched things. Anything 75 minutes or more i usually count anyway

Deco

I think peak Internet is you guys watching the pie sitting from better call saul

Hammond of Texas

The show is titled Sherlock but it's actually about John Hamish Watson, and Martin Freeman just astounds in this role.

2026-10-13 22:00 Is this the dreadful series with Benedict Cabbagepatch and Bilbo?

Cc Decc

I will say guys, that if your pattern is going to be Sherlock S1, then Sopranos S6pt1, then Sherlock S2, then Soprano S6pt2, then.... That's great as far as planned, but you should note, as someone who is very much a fan of this unconventional Sherlock treatment, that going beyond S2 gets dicey. S3 is a bit weird. Watchable, but generally considered a step down. And S4 almost didn't happen as everyone got famous and the show went on a long hiatus wherein the writers were replaced by brain damaged monkeys, and as it turns out shouldn't have happened. I know generally you watch shows to the end, but some shows dribble off weakly and actually diminish the show's legacy/memory (like the recently completed Stranger Things, or Alien before Requiem). This is one of those. You won't sense it/see it coming after you finish S2, but what should be a gem of your schedule the next few months is going to eventually turn into a turnip if you schedule it all the way out to the end of the series.

Alec Zrike

It's Bandersnatch Cummerbund. get it right! :)

Liam Nissan

Time for Benadryl Cabbage Patch and Bilbo!

djKENTO

I don't like this version of Sherlock at all. I don't like the writer's work. But I really REALLY want to see what they think when the show does what the show does.

djKENTO

it's not cheating if it's on there.

Duckfest

When Simone started talking about Benedict Cumberbatch and pronunciation, I was 100% expecting a different anekdote, lol

Alec Zrike

Fun fact: The original Conan Doyle stories portray Watson as former Army returning from the war in Afghanistan.

Cc Decc

The one with a 9.0 IMDB rating? yes.

Zhivko Yakimov

And the sad irony is that being a veteran from Afghanistan is as relevant in the 21st century as it was in the 19th ...

Nathalie

To each their own. The series was not my cup of tea, I found the pilot a tad too predictable and other episodes lacking. Not everyone will enjoy the same things after all.

TheLeftPecOfTheLord

I know you’re saying it out of loving concern, but I feel like assuming that they’ll dislike something and gently implying they shouldn’t watch it goes against the point of the channel. Love it or hate it, I want to see their whole opinion on the series which why I and others voted for it. Like you mentioned with Stranger Things, as a fan, I would’ve loved if they stopped at season 4 and had a greater love for it than after watching season 5, but I still wanted those reactions and opinions. I think they should only stop something if it’s causing genuine discomfort like with Black Mirror, not just bad writing

Peter Rosin

Oh I love Sherlock! Please watch all seasons, I know some will say to stop at some point

gfixler

Recommendation for the next long show: Sazae-san.

gfixler

I guess it makes more sense to do it in the anime slot, maybe after AoT or JuJu Beans.

Nathalie

I preferred how the character was used in Elementary with Johnny Lee Miller, and some of the Basil Rathbone movies were fun.

Anodyne

Reading the original Sherlock Holmes stories before watching this series is highly recommended. Each episode takes one of the classic stories and... plays with it. But you will get much more out of each episode if you've read the original, understand the assumed background knowledge, and can then be surprised and delighted by what they did with the original material when writing the show. The writers pretty much assumed that the viewers would have grown up reading Sherlock Holmes.

Dragonhunter

The writers didn't change it was still Mark Gattis and Steven Moffat but yeah season 4 is a crazy downhill dive especially the last episode.

Tom B

Ahhhhh this is such a great series to watch and react to! George might get annoyed at times with how some choices played out but I just know Simone is going to dive head first into the drama!

Simon

Loved seeing George’s cat for the whole reaction 🥰 Also yes, Mark Gatiss was the main guy at the Iron Bank of Bravos in GoT. I’m sure you will see him pop up in many more things, he’s just one of those actors.

Twiska Brand

To answer your question about if the show uses the cases from the books, the answer is sort of. This one, A Study In Pink, is based of the case "A Study In Scarlet." It's a modernizated version with a few twists. Like in this the victim left the word Rache and the police mistakenly think she wrote Revenge in German, but it was actually just Rachel. In the original book the victim actually does mean Rache, and the police think it was supposed to be Rachel. Edit: Also not so fun fact. In the original Dr Watson was also an Afghanistan Vet. History is a circle.

Twiska Brand

You say it reminds you of Doctor Who, well it is made by some of the same writers. One of them is actually the guy playing Mycroft.

Twiska Brand

You mentioned that after the Sopranos, you will do another long show. I know this isn't relevant right now, but I hope Buffy The Vampire Slayer is an option. Considering how often it gets mentioned. And it's not like you guys haven't done a long series that Simone has already seen before. I mean you do TNG.

Twiska Brand

I find it so funny when people finally realise House is actually a modern day Sherlock Holmes. House is a play on Home, aka Holmes and Dr Wilson is a play on Dr Watson.

Twiska Brand

I know some people felt burned by this series but I find it better if you look at them like a movie series. Sure, Terminator 4 sucks but 1 and 2 are still great.

Tay Schumaker

I actually really like the first two episodes of season 3, and the third episode is fine. I agree s4 goes off the rails a bit, and it's the only season of the show I haven't watched multiple times, but I'm down to go through them again on here

Philip Akca

They still have gems in them and I think they will actually like it more than you think. Its short series and loveable characters so there is an acceptance for some less stellar writing in the end. And youd be suprised that some reactors dont feel that way about the end

Philip Akca

They became superstars after appearing in this show, so yea that says it all

I🖤Kraken

Absolutely! It's their reactions, not our reactions that we are watching.

Jaaahn

its one thing to share your opinion on the show, positive or negative, but man i wish people would just let S&G decide for themselves whether they like it or not. like keep your opinions to the episode theyve reacted to, not 3 seasons down the road with "oh theyre gonna hate it/love it". just let them decide, theyre adults. more over, if you dont like something, thats fine but its also okay for others to decide for themselves by watching.

Forkbeard83

This Sherlock series started strong; all the episodes are adaptations of Sherlock stories updated to the modern world. But soon Moffat and Gattis' fanboying of Sherlock the character came through in late S2 and beyond - "guys, look how cool he is, and awesome, and amazing".

funky weapon

This has aged surprisingly well. there was minimal cringe which is impressive for Steven Moffat. he's a good writer but too often he succumbs to the desire to get cute in a meta way. barely any of that here.

AlternativexXxHonk

Georges Cat in the Background, a real Scene stealer.

Amelie W

Ah, I like this show in small doses. The asshole genius bit gets grating if you binge watch but an episode a week with season breaks sounds nice. Sherlock Holmes leds itself well to adaptations. I've read a steampunk version, one with Lovecraftian gods ruling the world, (A Study in Emerald, by a certain disgraced writer), one porno comedy titled John Holmes and Sherlock Watson,oh and there's The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen where these characters play some significant parts; all very good. House MD I think works best when it leans heavily on Doyle. Mycroft I think never gets enough appreciation. It might be because everyone who writes him makes him so much smarter than what they can convincingly write. What a fun idea, Sherlock's big brother, so extraordinarily clever he can keep track of and correlate every piece of business of the British government (and assorted intelligence services), he pretty much is allowed to run the world because he's just good at it. . .at least so far as Britain's interests are served.

Brandon

The running gag is that Simone barely remembers TNG though, unlike Buffy. IMO there's a lot of stuff they both haven't seen that they should react to before that. Besides, once they get past the shorter season 1, each season of Buffy would take them nearly 1/4 of a year. I think that's the main reason they stick to the shows that have seasons with 13 episodes or less.

Chris B

This is such a toxic and unnecessary comment. You're forcing your own personal opinion onto reactors, creating expectation spoilers. And this is not a universal opinion, season 3 has a IMDB average of 9.0. I shouldn't even be writing this (even this is too much) but I need to stress that this whole warning of the original commenter is basically unfounded.

Alec Zrike

I would personally vote for Babylon 5 as their next long(ish) show

REDR58

Mark Gatiss. He was also in Grindhouse (Don’t), Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One and The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

REDR58

The Granada television series sticks much more closer to the individual Doyle stories.

Mike MacColin

And now you know why everyone says that "Avengers: Infinity War" is missing a "No shit, Sherlock!" moment between Benedict Cumberbatch and Robert Downey Jr.

otto

They should do it on Wednesdays when they finish Star Trek

Ghostdm

You should only like what I tell you to like!!!

Tay Schumaker

House = Holmes Wilson = Watson And like Simone, it took me way too long to figure that out. It’s so obvious when you realize it

Richard Pearce

Phil Davis (the cabbie) appears in Whitechapel a crime drama set in modern east London where the police fore is faced with modern day killers doubling infamous crimes it also stars Steve Pemberton who was in The TV comedy series The League Of Gentlemen with Mark Gatiss (Mycroft)

Brad Lowry

So FUN! I am now ready to re-listen to the Complete Sherlock Canon as read by Stephen Fry! Speaking of Stephen Fry, it is always fun when George inserts a "quite interesting" fact that he got from the TV Show (and tatoo) Quite Interesting. I could hear Stephen Fry telling me about how amazing London Cabbies are trained to pass "the test" as George was saying it. Speaking of which, as I'm sure others have said, Mark Gatis is the Actor that plays his brother, Mycroft, and is also the mover-&-shaker and writer of this series. AND he was a very knowledgable and witty guest on QI once... It all comes round... if you watch too much British TV. Another link to QI: Season Two of "Ludwig" will be released TODAY in the US today, if I am rememberng correctly. Of course, starring David Mitchell a regular on QI. It also stars one of my favorite actresses, Anna Maxwell Martin. I know that "Ludwig" is too close to Sherlock, but maybe you could watch/react to that soon. Finally, back to QI and Jimmy Carr, I'm pretty sure this show never uses the word "ejaculate" as it appears in the original writing of Sherlock Holms, 24 times if I remember correctly.... Sherlock YaY!

Lyonheart86(BryonH)

supernatural for long series !!..maybe break into the sitcoms with something like big bang theory ..friends..etc

Richard Pearce

Una Stubbs (1937-2021) (Mrs Hudson played Aunt Sally in Worzel Gummage (79-81) alongside the third doctor John Pertwee She also played the daughter in 'Til Death Do Us Part in the 60s the Americans remade it as All In The Family Also she was in a musical with Cliff Richard called Summer Holiday from 1963 And in the 80s was a team captain on Give Us A Clue (Charades) opposite the mime master general Lionel Blair

Cartoons ReAct

They said at the beginning, they would do Sopranos 6th season first part and then Pluribus, then go back to Sopranos 6th season second part

Brandon

There are plenty of reactions where they'll say at the end "Let us know if we should watch the other movies in this series, or if they're not worth it." In other words, they actually care what we think to some extent. But when it comes to a TV show, which is a bigger time investment, we should all just shut up? S&G will like or dislike the later seasons based on their own judgement, regardless of what anyone says here. When people are in these comments saying "OMG this show is amazing and it only gets BETTER in later seasons!" you will never hear someone reply and say that they need to stop trying to manipulate their opinions and giving "expectation spoilers". As soon as someone says "This show really falls off in later seasons" people jump down their throats. Stranger Things is the perfect example. There is no way the comments are the reason George found the final season so lackluster. It was the material itself. Take Rocky V as another example. They'd been hearing for YEARS that it was a stinker and they came away loving that entry in the franchise anyway. I guess all I'm trying to say is that we really don't need another Stranger Things season 5 war in the comments, whether it comes to loving OR hating Sherlock.

Brandon

They do make up their own minds, though. It wasn't these comments that caused George to dislike Stranger Things season 5. It was the show itself. They avoided continuing the Rocky franchise for years because they kept hearing Rocky V was such a turd. Then they finally watched Rocky V and ended up loving the movie. They were even like "wtf are people talking about? This movie was so good..."

m

PronunciationManual is the YT channel about mispronunciations. Last upload ten months ago, but yeah, lots of hilarious ones.

Kyle B

Kind of a shame you didn't do a horror series for October. Welcome to Derry had some awesome horror sequences in almost every episode. I'll keep beating the drum in hopes of it at least showing up on a poll some day. That said, I loved Sherlock and enjoyed this.

newhastings

It’s so weird watching this for the first time in almost a decade, It’s like im getting traumatic flashbacks of tumblr discourse. Still a fun time though

OddThomas

Loved revisiting this series. As others say, it lost its way a bit at the end but most of it is excellent. For more early Cumberbutton, the movie Atonement is well worth watching.

Mister_Momus

Most of the original Sherlock Holmes stories are written from the perspective of combat medic veteran, John Watson. If there is a divergence between this and other Holmes renditions you've seen, this is likely the more true to the source, especially in the first couple of seasons. As much as I like Stephen Fry, I prefer Mark Gatiss' writing and portrayal of Mycroft than Ritchie/Fry's.

Inkpendude

I'm learning so much about the sherlock fandom lol

Lessiarty

I enjoyed watching George's cat's silent commentary on the show.

Lessiarty

While this series has its strengths and weaknesses, I really admire what Moffat did. If you're going to do Sherlock Holmes, really your only choices are either to rehash the original ACD stories, or go off the map and write an original adventure. With the former you risk comparison to other treatments (especially the Granada series), with the latter you risk comparison to Doyle himself. Moffat took the original stories and went off the map anyway, giving SH fans the familiar elements they know and love, but also giving us what we really want -- a good surprise. S&G caught onto it pretty quickly, but I honestly thought that was Moriarty up until the very end.

ThetaSigmaTheOriginal

I know Simone has seen the show Doctor Who, so she might be interested to know that the same writers who did that (Moffat and Gatis), also did this show.

REDR58

I was disappointed there was no subtle joke like that in The Desolation of Smaug.

Jayson Phillips

This is a great show! and I loved HOUSE MD.

romai

Ok I'm glad you folks are watching this, I barley finished season 1 a year ago and forgot about it. What I did see was really good and now I have a reason to finish the series 😂

Elijah

Their meeting in this show is actually incredibly accurate to the books. In the books Watson is a soldier returning from the Anglo-Afghan war struggling to live on an army pension and is introduced to Sherlock by Stamford in the morgue where Sherlock is hitting bodies with a stick to test for bruising. The rest of the show is usually loose adaptions of original Holmes stories.

REDR58

George, as far as Sherlock's door, at "221B Baker Street" being a tourist spot, it may well have been, but it was filmed at 187 North Gower Street: https://www.reddit.com/r/Sherlock/comments/c210w7/the_filming_location_for_exteriors_of_221b_baker/ Anthea, Mycroft's assistance, is played by Lisa McAllister and she was also in The Dark Knight as "Passenger" and the Sherlock series is her second-to-last role has not appeared on screen since 2015. Rupert Graves, here as Lestrade, was in V for Vendetta. When Sherlock shows Watson his nicotine patches, he says he has a "three-patch problem" which is a reference to the famous line that appears in one of the Doyle's Holmes stories concerning a "three-pipe problem" in that Sherlock would need to smoke 3 pipes to solve the problem.

Craig Bruce

The police could just analyze the pills to see which one or whether both were "iocaine powder".

Dauerempoerungskommentarspaltenkrachmacher

There are episodes I like more and others a little less. But I can honestly say that I enjoy every single season, without exception (even the special) just for different reasons. I don't see why others shouldn't feel the same way, or why S&G shouldn't be among these others.

Dan

There's a long an convoluted story about 221B Baker Street. Basically, when the books were written it didn't exist (at the time the numbers on Baker Street didn't go that high) and it's thought it was based on 21B Baker Street. Now the numbers on Baker Street do go that high (it was merged with another street) but it's still not that simple. You see there's a (touristy) Sherlock Holmes Museum that uses the address 221B Baker Street - but that's not really where it is! A number of buildings got combined into a single "219 to 229 Baker Street" and the Museum was given permission to use 221B Baker Street as an address even though it's "really" 239 Baker Street. At least, I hope all those details are correct...

Marcus Hicks

I thought he was a veteran of the Crimean War.....which was another very big conflict of that era....but then worked out that Crimea would have been too early to fit into the Sherlock Holmes timeline.

Marcus Hicks

I loved Series 3 myself. 4 had issues, certainly, and is much weaker than 1-3, but I still really enjoyed it.

Marcus Hicks

For me, the true pronounciation of ennui was a massive shock to me. I didn't know it was a French word, so always pronounced it En-you-eye 😆.

Yes. Though Matt and Mark were involved from season 1 (2005). Moffat wrote the empty child two parter. Gattis wrote the unquiet dead.

Drew Acheson

Perhaps this is too early or maybe you won't be interested, but for a long form show Elementary is a really great take on the Sherlock Holmes story, with Lucy Liu playing Dr. Joan Watson. It's one of my favorite shows.

Simon Pegged Me

He's excellent in Whitechapel. I don't know how I came across that series, but I'm glad I did.

Jose Robles

I also like the american Sherlock with Lucy Lu playing a female version of Dr Watson. Has its moments

Com1xguy

I want to put Fringe on the long show poll.

Ken Schneyer

What a delight! I had a blast watching you two watch this.

Kansas City Shuffler

So the writer of Sherlock, Steven Moffat, was the creator and showrunner of a sex-themed sitcom called "Coupling." Basically Britain's short lived answer to Friends. And he later wrote for Dr Who. The director of this first episode, Paul McGuigan, had previously directed a fantastic neo-Noir called "Lucky Number Slevin."

Ron

I haven't seen this in ages. So, I had loads of fun revisiting this. Thank you! * I think Sherlock could have figured out which pill was the poison pill by testing it. The game is over. So, he can easily test *both* pills to determine if 1 or both were poison.

The Real Andrew Kim

I'm glad you guys are finally doing this show, its on my list of best all-time tv shows and IMO the best interpretation of Sherlock Holmes. Try to keep in mind this show is very loyal to the books and even things that seem like modern add-ons will probably be a reference or easter egg to something that happens in the books. I also recommend checking out the unaired pilot that was filmed before the 90min aired pilot. Same story but the original pilot was only 60 min. I prefer that versions in some ways cuz of its low budgety-ness and the pacing of the story is a little faster.

The Real Andrew Kim

Also don't forget probably the biggest inspired character from Sherlock is BATMAN! George even referenced him in his reaction but i don't think he made the direct connection. Other character's i can think of that are inspired by Sherlock off the top of my head are Data, Spock, Odo, Tuvok, Basil the Great Mouse Detective, Adrian Monk (Tony Shaloub's TV show), Gil Grissom from CSI and the Death Note Characters Light and L.

Brandon

Coupling was a great series. That was one of my favorite random Netflix discoveries from the days before they produced their own content. I still remember the way my jaw dropped when Ben Miles (Patrick) showed up on Andor as Tay Kolma.

Steve kephart

i am so excited you guys are doing this series. It was a rare show we had watch parties for. As for a long show, you guys really should do the Stargate series. Mostly I want to see you gusy watch the grittier Stargate Universe. But you have to watch the also excellent Stargate SG1 and Atlantis first. It will be another Start Trek situation with that show, but well worth it.

Forsythe

A question for “A Study in Pink” that I only had after rewatching this episode with Simone & George: wouldn’t London’s CCTV cameras have footage around the streets that the bodies were found? Surely if a detective looked at footage from all four victims they would have seen the same taxi cab appear, no?

Rupert Purcat

FINALLY, YEAH. awesome to watch you 2 enjoying Sherlock. They done so well with this series. It is enjoyable being familiar with the original stories and how the drop the easter eggs in these stories.

James Lawson

TBH I feel George didn't like it cos he does seem to love a downer ending or bad things xD (Stranger Things) Personally I loved S5, perfect, no, but it wrapped it up. I think the problem is people forgot the entire thing was kinda a homage to the 80s/80s movies. So the tropes itself of "things all actually come up good" was forgotten. But yeah, i loved it :D but knew when he kept talking about liking things to end badly, that he wouldn't.

OddThomas

A warning for Sherlock episode 3; I don't know if it's still the case but I remember a thing about closed captions revealing someone's true identity too early. You'd think it would have been corrected by now but just in case you might want to turn them off for that episode.

G P

Looking forward to Sherlock - it starts out great, but is a little rough by the end

Justin Leone

Dr. House even has the same address as Sherlock. I also find it funny when people previously unfamiliar with Hugh Laurie learn that he's British.

Calvin-Skye

The chemistry between the two leads is utterly peak in this show. But as a Sherlock Holmes show, I found it rough going and stopped watching at the end of season 2. Hope you both enjoy it though.

JulioLG

Is this christmas? great pick you guys

rictus grin

i really enjoyed the first couple of seasons, but for me the best screen version was made in the 80's with The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes Starring Jeremy Brett as Holmes

rictus grin

221B has been a tourist attraction since the books were first written even though there was no 221B until the Sherlock Holmes museum lobbied to use the address in the 90's

rictus grin

Mrs Hudson played by Una Stubbs was a stalwart of British TV

rictus grin

Mycroft is played by Mark Gatiss who yes was in Game of Thrones, but his first big hit was in the surreal comedy horror series The League of Gentlemen

Mike FromOz

I am getting the dreaded feeling that this show is written as "only Sherlock would have figured that out because everybody else is stupid".

Mike FromOz

They'd have to simultaneously say it to one another for it to fully work though 😂

Sota

came to say this hope we get some good horror movies now

Vincent Carboina

I agree it also helps explain that you do just have to accept that he knows because he's Sherlock because it explains the work he put in to gain that knowledge

luke

Please watch all of Sherlock, in my opinion it is definitely worth it and you really start to fall in love with all the characters. Please don’t listen to those who’re telling you to stop and make up your own mind about it!

Angela D. Mitchell

I'm with you. It's so smug and "look at me, I'm being clever," but the plots are just a wild mishmash, with some fantastic actors who carry it off. I really get angry at the show's crude vision of Sherlock (who was absolutely NOT a "sociopath" in the books/stories). And don't get me started on the misogyny. But then again, it's Stephen Moffat, and "smug, clever, and misogynistic" defined his stint as showrunner on Doctor Who, especially in his later seasons.

Angela D. Mitchell

Elementary kicks Sherlock's ass. A far smarter, better, more complex show, and with a Sherlock and Watson who are light years better than what Moffat/Gatiss did here. It was so subtle and humanistic, and so well done. I loved it.

Angela D. Mitchell

I wasn't a fan of the Moffat era of "Doctor Who" at all. I thought he was so much better when he was a writer, versus when he became a showrunner. He just started retconning everything, changing backstories, pushing too hard. And then the subtle misogyny. I loved Amy, but don't get me started on Clara.

Angela D. Mitchell

Yeah, but "plays with" the original stories is kind of an oversell. Moffat/Gatiss really just grabbed a few random elements from each story and stuck them in an episode in a showy way. The plots themselves tend to be completely different (and for me are way less elegant).

ThetaSigmaTheOriginal

I'm half and half. I enjoyed S5 and most of S6. Didn't enjoy much of S7-S10. Never liked Clara's character development either. Moffat did tend to go heavy on the lore and the sci-fi element. Which worked sometimes, and flopped others. Sort of the reverse of Davies, who was good with the drama and the family writing, but also flubbed them sometimes too.

MasterElodin

House even has a kinda related name to Holmes (as it practically sounds like "Homes"). And House even lives in apartment number 221B. I think there are more connections but yea it's very intentional.

Michael

I never finished this show but I did really enjoy the first 2 seasons. I'm a big fan of the original Doyle stories and novels and really adore how much of those are in this show, updated for modern times. It's clear in the early seasons that they knew the original works well with how they riffed on them. And this plus the fun and bombastic RDJ/Law version both were nice for having Watson not as the buffoon Sherlock explains to like in many prior movie incarnations but as a full and intelligent character themselves. All the little bits like a Study in Scarlet becoming A Study in Pink or how they twist the "Rache" bit tickle me, and I especially enjoy how they modernize and riff on both Baskerville and The Woman later in the show. And I love how they characterize a later foil and the actor's performance of that villain. Later seasons kind of lost a lot of the original Sherlock references I love so I fell off on watching it, but the show's own versions of the characters remain very likable even then; it kind of becomes more about the show's version and their relationships and more removed from the source material, which lost my interest but no knock against it. I really enjoy the versions this show developed as their own characters and the performances are all top notch throughout.

Michael

I love the details that match or got updated. It's bleak that a soldier in Afghanistan can play in both timelines obviously, but as far as fictional narrative it's nice that the original Watson backstory fits with the modern setting. The Sherlock shows Watson his skills scene is nearly word for word, with a cellphone and charger taking the place of a pocket watch and it's winding key. Even the little detail of it being an old soldier buddy Watson meets who connects him with Sherlock as both are looking for flatmates being the same. Why fix what isn't broken, you know? They kept a lot of the key introductory bits essentially intact. And the continuity error Doyle himself made, switching around from Watson's original shoulder wound to a leg wound, is referenced by having one be a psychosomatic symptom of the other. The nods and twists on the source like those really make me love the first 2 seasons, especially. Stuff like instead of the foolish cop suggesting the name Rachel and Sherlock snarkily deducing it was German, they flip it for the show.

Michael

Additionally, Doyle had a continuity error (or just didn't care about this detail), making Watson's wound in the shoulder initially, switching it to his leg in a later novel, and then being just vague about what limb it was elsewhere. I thought it was clever how the show acknowledged both by making one a psychosomatic symptom of the other.

Michael

Benevolent Cumquat?

Angela D. Mitchell

New bruises can show up after death, especially if it's a very recent death. "The Wire" did a whole season 5 subplot about it and it's accurate. Meanwhile, it's so interesting because I have mixed feelings about the show, but I remember how much I loved this first episode years back, so this was a nostalgic rewatch for me with you guys. I still find some of the dialogue to be a bit showily clever, smug, and insufferably, consciously pleased with itself. But I do love that the way Holmes and Watson meet echoes the book version so closely, and that they are both the young men they are in the books (I was always so irritated that every single TV Sherlock was so OLD, bless their hearts. They start out in their 20s!). I love how much of Watson's history is brought into this right away, and absolutely adore the actors -- everyone's great, but especially Cumberbatch and Freeman. (And on a shallow note, the mop of black hair really suits Cumberbatch with the pale skin and blue eyes -- he's ridiculously attractive here.) The mystery did feel a bit obvious to me, and the show never reveals exactly why the cabbie survived each pill exchange four times. And really? NOBODY questioned the fake gun? Because if my choice is to kill myself or risk someone shooting me, honestly, I'd get up and run. It's harder to kill a human being with a bullet than it looks, especially if you're in motion. So that didn't work for me. I do think the tone is a bit smug -- no, I do not think Sherlock is a sociopath (and he definitely is not one in the books), and the characterization doesn't equal that either. He's visibly neuroatypical, he's brilliant, and he has a high IQ but low EQ. But we can see how lonely he is, how much he instantly likes and bonds with Watson, and look at the kiss he gives on his landlady's cheek. He's a decent guy at heart and no sociopath, even if it's fun for people to keep calling him that. And it bothered me that the female cop thinks it's okay to be so openly cruel to (and about) Sherlock simply because he's catty and socially awkward. For me, her cruelty is jarring because it's so much worse. And spouting, "he's a psychopath," doesn't make it true.

I don't think a downer ending is necessarily a requirement for him, even if he does like them. My only pushback is that Stranger Things might have been set in the 80's and had a lot of 80's influences, but everything about the writing in terms of story arcs and character arcs still felt very much like a modern streaming series. I don't really think all things come up good, either. Alive or dead, it was a bad ending for Eleven's character. IMO instead of losing her powers at the end of season 3, she should have lost her powers at the end of the series. Then the army loses interest in her as a test subject, she lives and gets to stay in Hawkins. I think that would have been an earned ending for the character and they could have given us a bittersweet feeling in some other way.

Really excited about this. I really love this series.

It's funny - I did the exact opposite. I watched the series and then listened to Stephen Frye read 72 hours of Sherlock to me. I really loved it that way as well.

Just read on tvtropes.org that the 2016 special has a Chinese Easter Egg / hidden clue. So now, I'm REALLY excited about George's reaction to it once you get to that point.

Jasper Collins

Glad you liked the show. I used to love it but my opinion of the show worsened a bit over time. It’s still well worth watching. Also George great T shirt Dungeon Crawler Carl is great.

Season 4 episode 2 might be the 2nd best episode (after season 2 episode 1) in the entire series.

Love George's quizzical look at the portrayal of Chinese culture. Like a dog trying to figure out where the voice from a speaker is coming from.

The screenwriters use a number of plot elements from the Conan-Doyle stories, but they do modernize and change. This first episode, A Study in Pink, was taken mostly from the story, A Study in Scarlet. Many of the characters have names from the original stories as well, including the brother of Sherlock Holmes.
