Star Trek Day!

Captain Kermit

I think you can be corrigible in Europe.

Brandon

'Tapestry' is one of my all timers. It's also the best Q episode as well, tied with another I won't mention. In the episode 'Samaritan Snare', Picard and Wesley are traveling together on a shuttle and he briefly tells the story about the bar fight that led to his stabbing. I love how they took a random piece of info about Picard from 4 years prior and built an entire episode around it. Instead of doing it in a simple flashback, they wrote one of the most creative episodes about the character's history and personality.

Captain Kermit

I've always thought that Simone is a very handsome woman.

Joel

The stealth Q episode... muhahahahaha!!!

djKENTO

has Simone been watching Young Justice????

Mike FromOz

"I bet he had a device in his belt, controlling the balls" An almost imperceptible smirk on Simone's face 😂

Jaaahn

oh look, just as expected, George didnt get DS9 'spoiled' because of the episodes, hell if Simone hadn't said anything it wouldve just been an other episode to him.

dc

"Tapestry" is one of my favorite TNG episodes, and it's named for one of my favorite albums: "Tapestry" by Carole King, which is *well* worth a listen if you haven't heard it. Remember how in the beginning, Q was so annoying...I love the subtle shift that has happened to him throughout the show. Q always has been trying to push humanity forward, and hides his intentions behind being a bit of an imp, so I definitely interpret the events of "Tapestry" as being coordinated by Q, and not just a hallucination. Honestly, I love the idea of your brain shutting down as being one last trip through your great memories. I don't believe in an afterlife per se, but I've always wondered whether those last few moments almost are an afterlife of sorts, albeit in your own brain: revisiting experiences and people who were important to you.

TalynOne

Based Picard would rather die than have Barclay's career.

Kyle West

Not only was Patrick Stewart making out with a 17 year old, to this day she is still not as old as he was when he made that episode. Yikes.

Brandon

I meant "they" as the writing team, since TV episodes are worked on collaboratively and then one writer is assigned to write the screenplay. But yes, credit where credit is due to Ronald D. Moore. 😅

Captain Kermit

Now is a good time to bring it up. Tapestry was written by Ronald D. Moore. He's written some of the best and most memorable episodes of Star Trek (TNG, DS9, and Voyager). He is also the creator of the reboot of Battlestar Galactica. This is why BSG is a great recommendation if you ever decide you want to give it a try in your lineup.

dc

Sooooo...George said something about DS9 in "a month or two"? If you start DS9 after Season 6 of TNG, that would be in about 5 weeks, but if you start DS9 after TNG S7, it won't be for another 18 weeks (which is 4 and a half months away). Are you guys doing S1 of DS9 before S7 of TNG? I'd love it if you did—and it would be better for the continuity between the shows that does happen, plus it would adhere to release order. But I understand if I have to wait until March.

fforw

In my personal canon, "Tapestry" never happened. Everything Picard does otherwise in TNG is so well integrated, lasting, with permanent changes to his personality. I don't dislike the episode, but it just does not fit with who Picard is outside of that episode. I just don't buy that you can be that guy back then and then change so completely, dagger to the heart or not.

TalynOne

Looks like it, unless she came up with "whelmed" independently.

John Rose

That actress was 17!!!!

Brandon

He's much younger here of course, but I remember being so excited when I found out that Alexander Siddig (Bashir) was cast as Doran Martell in Game of Thrones. However, they ended up changing the Dorne plot significantly compared to the novels. They didn't end up using his talents nearly as much as I had hoped.

Joel

Dr. Bashir says here that Data's dream circuits were activated "prematurely" but I think he's wrong. IMO, the fact that Dr. Soong in the dream sequence himself says that if Data can see him, that he has already achieved the level required, and that, had Dr. Soong been alive at this point, he would have already activated them, probably sometime near when he gave him the emotion chip.

TalynOne

Why? It happens all the time in real life, I've personally seen it happen.

TalynOne

There are plenty if you listen to the dialogue, but I'm fairly sure George, self admittedly didn't catch them and will most likely forget it by the time they reach DS9 proper. He even seemed surprised Picard laughed when he got stabbed when it's just basically showing the story Picard already told in a previous episode. I'm not throwing shade, most persons would have a really hard time keeping all the stuff they watch in their head with the amount they watch.

Mike W

That discussion after Tapestry, just reminded me of Bill Hicks. "Do you want your grandmother dying like a little bird in some hospital room? Her translucent skin so thin you can see her last heartbeat work its way down her blue veins? Or do you want her to meet Chuck Norris?"

Brandon

I don't think it revealed anything about DS9's character arcs or major plotlines. I'm pretty sure they don't even mention the name of the person in charge of the station.

Brandon

He also created 'For All Mankind' which is one of the best shows that is still currently ongoing at the moment (with one more season to go). I've been hoping to at least see it on a poll for a future reaction.

Jaaahn

its only a spoiler cuase people like you TaylynOne keeps telling him it is. without any context he wouldnt know what is or isnt a spoiler until someone confirms it.

Thall

George, in the second episode you were very quiet, volume wise. Just so you know!

TalynOne

Depends on what you consider a spoiler, a plot/premise or an ongoing story line. Personally I only consider ongoing story lines delve into spoiler territory that actually matters. Either way it's not the end of the world I know plenty of people who watched DS9 after finishing TNG, it wasn't a big deal.

Ceruleo

You don't think a person can change a lot in 42 years?

fforw

Not so totally. It also contradicts what Picard tells about his youth in other episodes. He want from being an adult kid who had problems with other kids that continue to the present to Starfleet academy, where he was a loner who was only friends with the gardener, but also a very popular brash ladies' man? It does not fit. Removing "Tapestry" is the easiest way to fix the continuum.

Monica Alarcon

I was about to comment the same. He's barely audible...

Cc Decc

Wrong genre, but Still Mine (2012).

The Real Andrew Kim

Not only should that T-shirt be worn everywhere I would make other people where one too, especially my women friends :P

Jomero

George: "I don't like this Worf hair." All I can say is, get used to it. The Prince Valiant bob is gone and never to return.

mpd

I would LOVE to be junior science officer on the enterprise, completing my statistical analyses. Sounds like a dream job

@Foodmancing

Anyone else have trouble with George’s audio being way too low in the second episode? Also this is a back door pilot for DS9. Tv has a long history of using episodes like this to launch spin offs

Dan

Bashir: "... machines can't have hallucinations" Though it's difficult to blame them for this one.

REDR58

Tapestry Crusher mentions Dr. Selar in the opening sequence. Selar, a Vulcan doctor, has been mentioned a few times over the series but has only had one on screen appearance. She was played by Suzie Plakson, in the second season episode “The Schizoid Man.”

REDR58

J.C. Brandy (Justine). She is currently 50 years old.

Dan

The Federation "not using money" is kinda an awkward thing and I suspect the writers never really worked it out in a consistent manner following the throwaway line in The Voyage Home. Let's just say that when a plot needs something like money there's something like money and when it needs everyone to be utopian and post-money they're that too. One interesting take: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tc_dAJfdWmQ (very minor spoilers, I guess, but mostly as B-roll and you could always just listen to it audio-only)

Dan

Maybe. On the one hand, I'm sure you get to do interesting stuff. On the other, you're frequently at imminent risk of being killed with no control over events or quite often knowing what's actually happening.

Dan

People always underestimate how much they'll change in the next few decades, even they've been around long enough to see how much they've changed over the last few decades.

Dan

Acting a kiss isn't "making out". It's usually distinctly unerotic.

2026-10-29 09:00 George, watching the DS9 crossover, you say "I guess that's what people were talking about" and consider yourself not spoiled. But that's exactly thr problem. 1. You GUESS that's what we're talking about, but you don't know. Suffice it to say that there are MANY spoilers to come if you guys don't watch the episodes in release order and instead try to go series by series. 2. You say they wouldn't kill Dr. Bashir in the episode of another show, and that's probably a good bet, but now you also know that Dr. Bashir isn't going to die in any of the episodes of DS9 that come before whenever this one does. And as you should have learned from Tasha Yar, any character could be killed off early (or even late). It's not too late to containt the damage already done. You can switch to air date order and get caught up until things are back in sync.

REDR58

Alexander Siddig is credited as “Siddig El Fadil” here as he had not changed his name to this point.

DanTurismo

I think you missed a few DS9 spoilers from things people said, that I guess didn't register. Maybe without the context it just sounded like typical TNG dialog.

Will Sofer

Also known almost universally back in the day amongst both the fandom and casual viewers as “the hot Vulcan”, at least until Enterprise premiered. And before you could simply look up the names of guest actors on Memory Alpha.

photos_by_geoff

I was also about to mention this. Too bad too, because halfway thru and it made me want to say something, as if that would fix it. LOL... Simone had some laughs at things George said and he was too quiet to hear the witty or funny comment. This is a great episode too! Missing what he is saying is making me sad. 🥺

REDR58

J.C. Brandy. She’s British and her somewhat generic American accent here is very good. That is because though she was born in London, she grew up in New York City and wrote the song “Can’t Get Me Down” on the Legally Blonde (2001) soundtrack.

Will Sofer

@Dan Yep. Junior officers are the non-color coded version of the TOS Red Shirts. You’d never know when your number was up if you served on the flagship.

Kyle West

Doesn't change the fact that it has an old man kissing a kid while pretending they're lovers.

ImpishMisconception

I have seen TOS and TNG but I haven't seen DS9, Voyager, or any other Star Trek series, I have decided to wait until Simone and George get to them and watch for the first time along with them... I like seeing the space station, and I see Dr. Bashir, I have heard of his character before. I caught something this time watching that I didn't before. I could have sworn that I heard Geordi say that he will have to talk about the food replicators with Chief O'Brien. I dunno if I heard that correctly, but that's what it sounded like. What would Chief O'Brien be doing on DS9, isn't he on the Enterprise? Though, now that I think about it, his character disappears in later TNG with no explanation, at least none that I know of.

djKENTO

while that is potentially super rad... bummed cuz of all the DC shows the OG Batman and Young Justice would be the best for a reaction. Young Justice is sooooo well written.

Dan

It's not kissing any more than giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation is. And while a 17 year old is a minor in most places the term "kid" generally has younger connotations.

iFixSAN

George, I wasn't so worried about this episode being "spoilery" as much as there are some in-universe happenings with some factions that will carry over to DS9, and that My fear is that you'd lose track of and miss how events started in one will carry over to the other. They're not super-tied together but things will have an effect in both directions. Edit: It's more "Oh yeah, that thing that happened didn't just go away." That fear was kind of confirmed when you mentioned forgetting about Picard's heart. That said, I get it. You're cramming in all this content over a short period with no re-watches. When these aired we had reruns over the summer and then endless reruns on syndicated stations over the decades to have these details cemented into our squishy brains.

REDR58

Watch “A Chistmas Carol” (1999) with Patrick Stewart. I have never been annoyed by Q. Enjoyed him from the start.

Kyle West

I just knew that's how they'd respond. Ugh.

Hoop

George said after the episode that he would "like to be able to regenerate instantly". It's called "coffee"....

Dan

What are you getting "who had problems with other kids" from? In general adults who are awkward with children were not necessarily bad at socialising with them when they were the same age. And young children are very much not the same as Academy/college aged young people. And previous episodes have implied that Picard was having romantic relationships in the Academy (eg "AF").

akaTheBAY-AY-RON

Simone channeling her inner Schmidt like "It's Deep Space Nine folks, what's up?! Deep Space NOINE!.... Deep Space NOINE!"

REDR58

Wonderful.

REDR58

Thank the Maker for Memory Alpha!

REDR58

I for one prefer it!

REDR58

Amusingly, George sometimes overestimates the ages of actors but she does look quite young here. I’d love to know who signed off on that (casting such a young actor who would be kissing Stewart).

Jomero

Same

Lindorandir

I think Tapestry is my favorite TNG episode. Or top 3 at least.

StonyD

Imagine what Worf must have been thinking at the end of Tapestry: "The Captain got shot through the chest....and is LAUGHING at death....he is a true Klingon!!"

MacGuffinStuff

So cool, I'm excited for DS9. I haven't seen all that much of it but it's a show I remember that for whatever reason I would happen to be awake when a rerun would be on and I liked it immediately. I got into it, but back then I was so busy I barely watched TV, but Avery Brooks, and I say this having not really seen much of Voyager ( I liked Chicote, that guy looks like my cousin Marcos, and Robert Picardo of Joe Dante movie fame and he's a "Legend" wink-wink, nudge nudge, guy's got some serious range), is my favorite Captain after Picard, but I know a lot of people love Janeway so I'm excited for that too. Fuckin love Star Trek. Also, how awesome would it be to have some of that art, Data's art? Imagine being someone who got that job and can say, 👋 hey I painted that one with the ducks that looks like it could be a Pink Floyd album cover, well a later one. EDIT: Chakotay, not Chicote. ¡Qué pendejo soy!

The federation, and some of its citizens if they want, does deal with and trade externally with money all the time. It's just that none of its citizens NEED money. Replication tech allows people to instantly have almost anything they want at any time.

StonyD

I assume modern AI tech dies in WWIII lol

REDR58

Birthright Part 1 Again, how is it even possible for Bashir to get access to equipment on the Enterprise? I think it would have been less silly and more interesting if he had simply tracked down Data and asked for help from the start. Cromwell has a very distinctive voice. Once before, Troi asked a Klingon about a broken glass table, in that case, Worf’s mate K'Ehleyr (played by Suzie Plakson): https://youtube.com/shorts/5riCPCXA-NM?is=UkAgtSYxY_kbSdGN Those railings on Deep Space 9 do not look like they are to code!

PoindexterG

While that's true, this is between DS9's 7th and 8th episode, so it's not like it's spoiling much.

Patrick - Excelsior

When they filmed their kiss together, J.C. Brandy, who played one of his friends at the academy, was 17 and Patrick Stewart was 52 - a little over three times her age. Picard's brush with death by stabbing and the subsequent acquiring of his artificial heart was first mentioned in Samaritan Snare 2x17.

TechJJ

"Tapestry" is a great episode to demonstrate life's directions based on choices. I recently had my two college boys watch it and think which path they would prefer. As for DS9 rendezvous. Not much spoiler. Watching a trailer would spoil million times over. But sometimes it's worthwhile to get some exposure for context and for increasing interest. HOWEVER, I do not suggest delay watching TNG movies to fit within the DS9 timeline like some anal fans want you guys to do. I didn't really watch DS9 until after TNG movies and it was perfectly fine. The exposure is no more different than the Birthright episode.

Patrick - Excelsior

Some information about Data's artwork for you, from Memory Alpha: "Data's paintings were computer-generated collages contributed by art department staffers Alan Kobayashi, Jim Magdaleno and Michael Okuda. Kobayashi noted, "I remember Jim working on one of the paintings. It was the first digital painting onto canvas that I ever saw. I was very impressed!" (Star Trek: The Next Generation 365, p. 295; Star Trek: The Next Generation - The Continuing Mission, p. 180) The painting of the corridor was created by Okuda, who used Photoshop to digitally extend a photograph to be longer than the actual set. REDR58

Regarding the time travel element in "Tapestry" and if it was real, or not, according to Memory Alpha: "The exact nature of time travel used in this episode is intentionally left ambiguous in light of the full spectrum of Q's powers and the incident that brought about the chain of events in the first place. As observed by Picard himself, Q's powers and ability to create isolated realms of existence introduce the possibility that time travel is not involved at all, or the whole experience could merely be a hallucination in which case Picard never even met Q at all in the episode." https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Tapestry_(episode)#Continuity

Simon Pegged Me

I think the issue that he shouldn't be a junior officer at his age. After 30 years, he's only a lieutenant junior grade (LTJG). That means he's had one promotion in rank in a career spanning three decades. Yes, he's done well enough to make it to the flagship, but even so, he's far away from a career what most officers would consider successful. For perspective, Lt. Barclay has progressed further in his career; he outranks LTJG Picard in this reality.

funky weapon

I think some people are just eager to dig into DS9. not that I blame them. Sisko is the man.

ngl I was thinking of watching FAM but knowing the creator did BSG and some Trek sealed it for me.

And now RIP Patrick Stewart

Patrick Stewart has Passed. This world sucks.

PoindexterG

I just saw that Patrick Stewart passed. I read that it happened yesterday. So one of the last episodes I watched before hearing about it was Tapestry, which seems a fitting episode.

RIP to the best captain in all of the federation.

I was literally watching your reaction to one of my favourite episodes, Tapestry and heard the very sad news, RIP Sir Patrick Stewart & Walter Koenig just few days ago.

RIP Patrick Stewart. O captain! My captain!

Oh noooo, Simone must be devastated. I just started watching TNG for the first time with you guys and just saw the news about Patrick Stewart. :( RIP.

This week can just fuck off now. First Walter Koenig, who I liked as Chekov but LOVED as Alfred Bester in Babylon 5, and now Patrick Stewart.

Well, perhaps that mystery may be solved one day.

The sad irony of watching this on the day Sir Patrick Stewart died... 😓😓😓

I had to jump in and make sure to check that Simone is ok as well deal with this devastating loss of our Captain... George too (they're far enough into the series that he's George's captain too) lol

I've got shiver a few minutes ago (European time, it's 6:30 in the morning here): Yesterday evening: seeing you watching tapestry This morning: finding out that Sir Patrick Steward left this plane of existence. He joins most of the cast of TOS (after Walter Koenig's leaving this earth on sunday only Shatner and Takei are left), Gene, Majel and René Auberjonois (George will see) he is the first of the TNG-crew that leaves us with his (epic) legacy. He was my Captain, even though Kirk was the only Captain for my first years, Picard was THE Captain!

Robert Mendoza

After the sad news today this reaction was just what I needed. Maybe it's Paul Walker. That never gets old, never. Of course Simone was right about James Cromwell. Watching the discussion about sleep got me thinking Data really gets the best of both worlds in that regard. He doesn't need a certain number of hours sleep. He could just shut down for 15 minutes a day and have a nice little dream. I didn't give Tapestry a lot of thought when I was younger but I had a stroke 5 years ago and I feel like the episode makes a lot more sense to me now. I would love it if I never had that terrible experience but I did learn and grow from it and that's life.

The "spoiler panic" is quite silly anyway. It'S barely spoilery if you know all about both shows, people that aren't in deep will never remember anything that could be construed as spoiler.

Angela D. Mitchell

I can't believe we've lost Patrick Stewart. I keep hoping Q will show up and say it's all a joke. I haven't caught up on the Cinebinge watchalong yet, as I'm a few episodes behind, but I just wanted to send condolences to Simone and our fellow TNG fans here on the loss of Sir Patrick. She has mentioned so often how important Picard is to her in the show. And it's such a huge loss. Stewart had a towering talent, but beyond that, he possessed an elegant, effortless charisma, always able to convey intelligence, passion, and complexity. He could be charming, tragic, or terrifying onscreen and onstage, and he will always be my favorite Claudius (David Tennant's Hamlet -- do not miss). Beyond that, he was such a passionate crusader for victims of domestic violence and human rights. And if you followed him on social media? He was a delight -- filled with an inexhaustible joi de vivre and who loved and laughed every moment. He always seemed so ageless -- even when I watched "Logan," I remember thinking, "Patrick Stewart is doing such a good job of playing an old and decrepit Professor X," because he just didn't seem old to me at all! I was especially sad to learn that he passed from Alzheimer's and Lewy Body Dementia. My Dad recently passed from Parkinson's (another Lewy Body disease) and suffered cruelly from Parkinson's psychosis, which people aren't as aware can accompany the disease. These Lewy Body conditions rob the mind as well as the body, and my heart goes out to Stewart's loved ones. Meanwhile, I've loved his work for decades, going back to my college days and TNG, and my current journey through TNG on rewatch with Simone and George here has been such a delight, and it has only made me respect his genius more than ever. And added to my forever crush. I'm incredibly sad for his loss. (And RIP Chekov too!)

Angela D. Mitchell

I'm so, so sad. Patrick Stewart's loss hit me really hard. He just seems so joyful and ageless. I can't even process it right now.

Angela D. Mitchell

I would love for them to react to "Conspiracy Theory." It's underrated, smart, poignant, and Patrick Stewart is TERRIFYING as the villain. And oh, the score is so beautiful.

Angela D. Mitchell

Me too! I adore Q, always will, and on a shallow note, had a huge forever crush on him. And it was only intensified when he became a total silver fox. Jeebus, he aged well! He and Patrick Stewart both. (Aaaaand... now I'm sad again.)

Angela D. Mitchell

I've always loved Siddig -- such an elegant and charismatic actor. I was so disappointed in the adaptation of his part in Game of Thrones, because he could have killed it as written. But that was the beginning of the Game of Thrones downslide, so... ugh. On a side note, Siddig is really funny and charming, and interacts with fans on word games and stuff.

Angela D. Mitchell

And I'm with everyone who wants a week of tributes to Sir Patrick's movies! My suggestions: Conspiracy Theory Jeffrey Frasier (S11 E 3 - "The Doctor is Out" -- he is ICONIC!) Hamlet (2009, David Tennant -- he is the best Claudius I have ever seen) Coda The Sheep Detectives A Christmas Carol

Michael Kemmet

Blacksmiths use both water and oil to quench depending on what effect they are looking for. Water cools the metal quicker, which makes metals like steel harder. But it can also make them more brittle and increases the likelihood of warping. Oil cools the metal slower, which can make steel less brittle at the expense of some hardness. Quenching with oil can also create a polymeric coating on the item which will protect it from corrosion(think seasoning cast iron), but that same coating can become a contaminant if you need to work the metal afterward.

The Real Andrew Kim

Not a spoiler but the best way to describe DS9 vs TNG/TOS/Voyager is comparing it to old TV show westerns which was the basis for the concept of the show. TNG/TOS was Wagon Train where they are going out exploring the Frontier and having adventures, while DS9 is Gunsmoke or Deadwood about a frontier town/outpost at the crossroads of a pivitol frontier trail junction and there is a deeper focus on characters and political intrigue between cultures rather than adventure stories
