A reaction of yours I haven't seen! I also haven't seen the film in years so can't remember anything about it.

Odd Thomas

Key Tim Curry roles: Congo, It (1990), The Shadow, Legend

For more Sam Neill: Event Horizon is basically The Shining in space. Great 90s horror.

Crimson Tide is the other big sub movie

New patreon here. I understand that the Youtube-versions needs commentary but I still don't understand why you have to be so jokey during serious movies. Yes serious movies have moments of levity but it's distracting when a serious moment/dialogue etc is deflated by a joke or a funny observation. If this is your mo that's fine, I'm not gonna unsubscribe because of it, but if it's possible I would generally prefer if you would take serious movies a bit more seriously. But again, if it's not possible or you don't care for more serious commentary that's perfectly fine. Glad you enjoyed the movie.

Fun fact for the Canadians: Fred Dalton Thompson, who plays Admiral Painter here, the one who says "Your average 'Russkie', son, doesn't take a dump without a plan." You may also recognize him from Law & Order, Matlock, Die Hard 2, and other places. He was a US Senator from Tennessee from 1994 to 2003.

The surname McTiernan was first found in County Cavan, Ireland

Brad Lowry

And Fred Thompson was the Senate Lawyer that interviewed Alexander Butterfield for the Watergate Hearings that exposed the fact of an extensive Tape Recording System in the Nixon White House.

The main actors' Russian was atrocious -- Connery's "khorosho" (= 'good') sounds like a beginner student's in a Russian class in Scotland... The minor actors, the submarine crew for example, are real Russians and speak like natives.

Welcome to the Ryanverse! Starting the watch along now. Patriot Games and A Clear and Present Danger are absolutely worth watching. A Sum of All Fears and Shadow Recruit are ok movies, but they are about Ryan earlier in his life, and do not continue the story from the first three movies. The Jack Ryan show on Amazon is excellent. I hope you enjoy this series, it’s one of the best American political intrigue series out there.

That Navy officer was upset at Ryan wearing the Navy uniform which Greer told him to do to keep a low profile. The first thing Ryan does when he enters the room is apologize for wearing it because he knows they won't be happy with it. So when Ryan leaves the one officer gives Ryan's backstory to the other so he will not be so upset about it.

Luetin

I sincerely hope you guys will also do patriot games, and more importantly Clear and Present Danger. Both excellent yet under reviewed movies on Youtube.

Great stuff! In terms of other McTiernan films, 'The 13th Warrior' with Antonio Banderas is worth watching. It is based on a Michael Crichton novel (same guy who wrote Jurassic Park), which is in turn loosely based on Beowulf.

Ian Forbes

McTiernan also directed the third Die Hard film (“With a Vengeance”). Sequels in that franchise are not equal in quality. I personally think 3 & 4 are pretty good and frankly don’t remember 2 but also don’t remember having any issue with it. #5 is abysmal however and all celluloid bearing its scenes should be burned … Came out around the time White House Down was released which oddly felt like a Die Hard movie only without Bruce Willis. I don’t recommend either but there’s my biased 2 cents. 😃

Great reaction, CineBingers! If you are interested in other submarine movies, here are 2 great ones: “Crimson Tide” (1995) Denzel Washington, Gene Hackman “U571” (2000) Matthew McConaughey, Bill Paxton

I think the submarine movie Simone talks about at the end is "The Hunley". A TV-movie. It's about a "submarine" build by the confederate army during the U.S. civil war. It was "muscle-powered" and not fully submersed (lack of air), but still managed to sink a warship. First ever case of a submarine sinking a warship.

POSTALMNDCLARITY

Even though U-571 is really historically inaccurate, its still a GREAT movie. I recommend you give that one a watch, if you want more submariner films!

It was fun to watch your pre-show guessing and speculation. I guess you were looking at the original movie poster. More recent ones make it more clear that that silhouette is a sub conning tower. Jack Ryan as an action hero is a more recent thing. Yes, most of the stories had him winding up out in the field somehow, but they also make it clear that despite being a Marine, he's not really in his element doing field work. As he said, he's an analyst. This movie along with Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger are the most direct adaptations from the Clancy novels. Everything that comes after bears less and less resemblance to the source material. Sum of all Fears follows the basic storyline, but most of the details have been changed. Alec Baldwin fits the role of Jack Ryan most fully, he physically looks the way Clancy describes him and he conducts himself the way Jack does. Strangely enough, I think the next best actor to portray him is Chris Pine, even though that is more or less an original story using the Clancy characters. The reason it sounds so technical is that they use a lot of actual Navy details. The Navy was fully on board for this. That sub in drydock? That was real. Those extras aboard the Dallas? Actual submariners. And Scott Glenn actually got to go aboard USS Salt Lake City for a month as part of his preparation. They let him act as commander to learn what they do and how they act and John McTiernan said he came back completely different, seeming more like a soft-spoken university president.

George- Jack Ryan was introduced as a character in the novel 'Hunt for Red October'. He reappeared in further Clancy stories (and movies such as 'Patriot Games' and 'Clear and Present Danger') as a CIA operative, but never the action-buff version that John Krasinski is portraying (Krasinski has portmanteaued Clancy's 'Jack Ryan' with 'John Clark', Ryan's military expert partner in some missions). Btw, Willem Dafoe plays John Clark in 'Clear and Present Danger', so there's some more movie-watching magic for you.

I have to throw 'Das Boot' in the ring for a really good submarine movie. Its a german movie from 1981 about a german submarine and his crew in WW2. Its pretty long and with subtitles, so its hard to react to. But for me it shows the grim and hard conditions on a submarine the best. Its pretty realistic and has a really good set. So if you want to react to it or just watch it on your own time, i would watch the Directors cut if possible.

Githerax

Simone's comment about 'how information is getting around' reminds me strongly of 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy' with Gary Oldman. If you two haven't seen that one yet, can you put it on a poll? It's *amazing*.

Githerax

'shows the grim and hard conditions on a submarine' Oh yeah Simone would *love* that lul

Almost forgot to mention - those hugered "tanks" in the Red October you were wondering about? When the cook was trying to blow up the ship near the end? Those aren't tanks, they're missile tubes. Inside each one is a nuclear ICBM. Way before 9/11 I toured the US-equivalent to the Red October, an Ohio-class missile sub. The crew actually slings their bunks BETWEEN those missile tubes. You're sleeping with nuclear weapons at head and foot. Mind blowing.

kevjohn

Heya, remember me? I was your very first patron. I saw greatness and I was not disappointed!

Crimson Tide is another Submarine movie if you guys are interested.

Prof. Writhms

Oh wow, I forgot about James Cameron's "The Abyss" (1989). He took the submarine movie to whole new depths (pun intended).

PaulChristopher

There is a comedy submarine movie with Kelsey Grammar, Rob Schneider, Rip Torn, and the father of Gwyneth Paltrow, Bruce Paltrow, called Down Periscope. And you might be interested in a Sean Connery science fiction/fantasy movie called Highlander.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Just a weird observation but I noticed the same character actor in three of your most recent reactions. Rick Ducommun, he was a stand-up comedian in the 80s. He was the city worker who could turn off the power to Nakatomi Tower, he was the semi annoying guy on the helo taking Jack Ryan to the Dallas, and he was the Spaceball guard, John Candy Barf stole his uniform. I only bring it up because the best movie Rick Ducommun was in was as the neighbor in "The 'Burbs", with Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher. It's an obscure one, underrated, hidden gem.

Kron0n

Crimson Tides is an amazing Submarine movie. Mind blowing acting.

Seirsan

Yeah that is toilet paper you see hanging in the sonar area on the Dallas. They will mark the screens with grease pencils while working then use the paper to wipe it off.

Dan Corazza

Another McTiernan film I can recommend is The 13th Warrior.

Brent Garripee

This is one of my all-time favorite movies, and favorite books. I'm so happy you guys dug it! Laughed multiple times in glee at your reactions. The book is really good, really more depth to the song-and-dance of the ruse. One of the few books I re-read.

Thomas Yanez

Sometimes I REALLY wish y'all spent more time listening to WHAT the characters are saying instead of HOW they are saying it so that you aren't talking over dialogue that, you know, explains things you are asking questions about.

Patrick Egan

The Jack Ryan in the TV show is NOTHING like the original character from the books. The Tom Clancy books featuring him are some of my favorites, I still re-read them from time to time. Honestly, I don't think any of the actors who've played him have been all that faithful to the books, but I think Alec probably got closest.
