North Americans culturally treat 18 as an absolute rule but most of Europe has a much lower age of consent and is a lot more relaxed. I agree with the broader point.

First of all it was documented that the director purposely made Leon slow thinking. Secondly Leon only said what he said to get her to leave. He could have easily got away but went back in and was killed.

I'd recommend Taxi one of Besson's early French films with Marion Cotillard (Dark Knight Rises/ Inception) in a early role about a pizza delivery bike rider that upgrades to s super suped-up taxi that gets roped into helping the police hunt down a German bank robbing crew. Very silly, charming and very funny.

Michael Lynch

Oh wow! I cannot wait to get home and watch this today. This movie is freaking awesome.

Elvenwitch

This version of the movie is so much more disturbing than the original theatrical release.

Luc Besson's second "wife": "Maïwenn met film director Luc Besson when she was 12 and he was 29, and they began dating when she was 15." He's been accused by other women as well. That said, it's the most common thing in the world for students to get crushes on their teachers, so Matilda's actions are sensible.

David Crabtree

Ah, the pedophile movie. Gotta pass on this one.

If you wanna see a movie where a actor absolutely kills their first role. Watch Edward Norton in Primal Fear!

100% I've seen the theatrical version countless times, so I knew when I had to skip past the nasty shit and get to the good parts when watch their reaction.

Salutations. The flag at 10:24 is Puerto Rican. That is all.

Michael Lynch

God it's so cringe watching young people be so affected by a mature topic. I guess that's the softer generation. Like you said he never acted on it in the movie.

jim Howe

This is one of the more pretentious comments I've seen recently. Do you honestly believe the film both needed and benefited from those scenes?

Michael Lynch

Well I'm 46 and I grew up in a Time I guess when more questionable stuff was allowed in movies. In other words I guess I'm more desensitized to scenes. That stuff was pretty tame and I thought his reactions were a bit much.

To really get that Fifth Element feel you need to watch his opus Valerian. It's a 50's sci-fi comic from France. He actually made The Fifth Element bc at the time the scope of Valerian was to big for his funding but it was his dream. So he wanted to make a film to use as a stepping stone to make his dream film. Since Fifth Element didn't do well in its release, that stepping stone took 20 years. It's a VFX marvel and a real space opera, his personal life aside, you should react to Valerian.

Luc Besson also directed Valerian: City of a thousand planets.... I think... Under rated, not the best acting choices, but still a great movie, and visually breathtaking.

You guys should also watch La Femme Nikita, or just known as Nikita (1990). Besson made a few other movies before it, but that was his breakout film that caught attention. It’s been remade several times, and a few TV shows were also based on it. Don’t look at the cast listing, just watch it.

i was more of a Heather Feather guy. she used to put me to sleep every night

Check out Bram Stoker's Dracula by Francis Ford Coppola with an amazing performance by Gary Oldman. And it has Keanu Reeves...

Besson had a script for a sequel, about a grown up Mathilda, but for Hollywood reasons it was never made. Eventually, the script was reworked and made into the movie "Colombina", which can serve as a spiritual sequel, since it tells the story of a girl whose family was killed by a drug cartel and she grew up to be a hitman seeking revenge.

Odd Thomas

I second Dracula and also Lost in Space purely for Oldman's scene chewing Dr. Smith. Besson's recent sci-fi Valerian is nowhere near as good as Fifth Element but it does have a similar vibe so you might want to give it a go.

Why does everyone think is pedophilia? It's a young girl with a crush on an older guy who saved her life. Mathilda is very precocious (much like Natalie Portman in her first film at age 12). This happens today as it has forever. Leon recognizes this and refuses her advances. Not everything that happens between a kid and an adult is pedophilia. It's gotten so you can't even talk to a kid these days. "I'm less nervous about the killing". THAT'S today's society. No problem with murder and blood, but horrified by anything that's could be interpreted by suspicious people as "sex". Better she should grow up embracing murder. Convoluted thinking.
