This is still one of my favorite movies. As for other Luc Besson movies, you may enjoy The Transporter. It is an action film but a bit less intense than this one.

The relationship between Leon and Matilda is definitely meant to be romantic, an earlier version of the script even has them having sex, which BLOWS! I usually just watch the Stansfield scenes now because he's such an awesome bad guy, but everything between Matilda and Leon skeeves me out too much

It would be easier to buy the argument that Leon draws a line and that the idea is that Mathilda is mature beyond her years and Leon is essentially a child if Besson himself hadn't married a 16-year-old (which was legal in France, and may still be). Ultimately, I think if you JUST look at the movie, it doesn't cross the line, but it's definitely uncomfortable knowing real-world stuff, IMO.

Let's just say Luc Besson personal life is sketchy at best when it comes to the ladies

This movie is often incorrectly compared to LOLITA! It’s true, the real life creeps came after Natalie Portman and she has regretted doing the movie over it. Her character only THINKS she’s in love with Leon. He is her savior, and protector- like a father. He doesn’t scold her too badly over her “advances” if ya want to call it that. Her family was just killed. I liked the scene where she chugged champagne in the restaurant (it would have been okay in Europe in the 90s.) today they would call it grooming! grooming! grooming! But Leon didn’t pluck Matilda off the internet. He was adopting her, uh, as a criminal hit man killer only could! She was such a brilliant child actress in this movie... too bad they DONT LET HER ACT in the SW prequel trilogy. She just says lines mostly like a great looking puppet. Evidence- she came back after SW and won an Oscar for Black Swan. That’s why I don’t mind if they give her the Thor mantel and hammer. Because Jane Foster didn’t do anything! She’s just THE GIRL. Actually, Thor dumped her TWICE OFF CAMERA in Avengers/ Thor3. He did her real dirty.

Easily one of my favourite films ever that one.. The Directors cut, not so much.

christopher b swanson

her 1st movie...............and she deserved an Oscar just for the hallway door scene...........

A couple of other good movies with Jean Reno (Leon) are Mission Impossible and Ronin.

@jQ there is a filmed scene of more sexual nature but smartly the studio cut them out here in NA. I saw the longer European version in France in early 95. It was quickly re-edited.

Tyler Foster

It's complicated because of course that material is skeevy, but at the same time, the original version of the movie is what is. I think the reason I hesitate is not the content itself, but that 1) an American studio cutting material from a foreign movie for reasons of cultural taste and 2) any studio cutting material from a movie solely because it makes the audience uncomfortable are both slippery slopes that normally have awful outcomes.

Luc Besson is himself pretty much a real life creep; he began dating his second wife, Maiwenn Le Besco, when she was only 15 years old and he was 31. She was already pregnant with their daughter by the time he married Maiwenn at age 16.

@jq no evidence of what. The more sexual scene or the studio cutting it
