True Detective Season 1: Episode 1-2 - Patreon Version

Comments

Derik Knutson

I'm not going to lie, it astounds me that you guys manage to not know a single thing about stuff that is so culturally significant. Talking about True Detective season one like it was some obscure low budget indie out of Greenland or something.

Acrobat6

"How on Earth do you not know about X?!" - Come on now, you're on the Patreon of two people literally going out of their way to see and experience films/tv and get an idea of why some of them are culturally significant - which is more than most people do IRL. It is hard enough to keep up with current releases, never mind the vast category of classics old and new, I struggle even with a lot of free time. I agree with you TD S1 is one of the best shows of recent times and damn significant, but understand also that is only really the case because our respective demographics and a fair bit of luck - it's very easy to have not heard of it, like most stuff.

I have that quote tattood on my wrist "I don't sleep, I just dream", so far only one person recognised that it's from this show, but to be fair I only had it for a couple weeks. Honestly both Woody and Matthew deserved an Oscar for their performances, they are both wonderful here.

AC10

So close to a 3 way tie.... we can try again next time though.

Nick Sneddon

Great choice, it's a proper slow burn but fantastic all the same

Andrew

I personally don't see the point in watching tv shows on these reaction channels, pretty much all tv shows get terrible viewing numbers, whether it be on youtube or patreon, they also take up so much viewing time for the little interest there is in them Even just one season of this show takes up 8 hours of viewing time and just one movie alone could easily total more views than this entire series will get

Martin Nicholls

Oh no 90 minutes a week is too much for me. I'm constantly slammed with work (I'm effectively on a 7 day work week at the moment) and moving into my new house and I manage like 6 shows between my various patreon supports. Don't binge them? Binging is for when a show first comes out, you generally want to take your time on a rewatch. As for watch numbers it's Patreon exclusive anyway so of course the numbers are low, the point isn't to massively balloon out the advertising revenue - would they have watched The Mandalorian without doing a poll that had it in etc etc..

So excited to see you two watch this one! Glad you're enjoying it so far. I grew up on the coast of Texas, and much of this setting (southern Louisiana) reminds me of there. At least in terms of appearance and the southern accents, not the occult serial killers. :-)

Jack Burton

This is one of the best seasons of a TV show I've ever seen so I'm certainly stoked to watch this for the 4th time with you guys.

Martin Nicholls

By the way have you guys ever considered doing a miniseries poll or including miniseries on a TV poll? I've got a few amazing ones in mind and for some reason reactors never touch them - example being Maniac which is a complete story arc in 10 TV format episodes. I always find it a shame how much exceptional content there is out there that reactors completely ignore that sits somewhere between a TV show and a movie.

I was massively psyched to see this in my inbox--until I saw that it beat out Firefly by literally a flip of a coin :( True Detective Season One (the later seasons don't even come close) is on my personal short list of top 3 mini-series of all time, but you absolutely must watch Firefly (and Serenity after)--it's absolutely perfect for both of you, and you guaranteed won't regret it :)

such a good season

lespea

Martin, this really isn't a "cop show" in the typical sense. Plus it has one of the best filmed sequences in all of television history, not to mention the truly stellar characters. I would give it a try. If you still don't want to that's fine obviously just thought I'd let you know 🙂

Martin Nicholls

Think you put this in the wrong place - but NGL the fact that Matthew McConaughey was cast because of The Lincoln Lawyer is tempting me a little.

David Crabtree

I really enjoyed this first season. And Alexandra Daddario in one of the greatest scenes in cinematic history!

Erich Bomke

LETS GO!!! One of my all time favorite seasons of television. And not to bring the mood down but also the last conversation I ever had with my father was about how good this season was, so it will always be close to my heart.

mojo shivers

I love the way this season ties into a wider occult mythology, but it’s kind of freaky in the same way. It’s like bringing a nightmare long held by humanity into reality. The thing about the mysterious deity everyone’s whispering about is you’re not supposed to mention it or write because that’s how he draws power and spreads its influence. That’s why I’m loathe to comment on the revelations these episodes, especially episode 2 get into it. It’s just not worth it if it’s true that’s how he works. No name and no nickname anywhere. Lol

Monica Alarcon

Out of the three this is the one I wanted to watch the least... But I'll give it a try... I was really hoping for the Expanse... I actually started reading the first book when it was on top in the poll and it was for nothing!... Okay not really for nothing, I'm really enjoying it. I'll probably read the whole series and be ready for when it wins the poll... Hopefully

Githerax

Not offering it for suggestion, since I want Gemone to enjoy some variety, but I think True Detective Season 2 was also very good and that if it had been the first series it'd have been considered much more favorably. I suspect people didn't like it because it wasn't more of the same.

Githerax

George, do you not know what grated Parmesan cheese is? This is a serious situation. I've heard that cheese isn't a thing, culturally, in China; I'm curious, how do Chinese people react to the cheese-heavy foods of Europe/North America? George, on a more serious note, I'm guessing 'DB' is dead body. Edit: Simone got it.

christopher b swanson

love true detective but also..................damn please do firefly............you will fall in love

Adam Wetstein

George I thought you gave Simone a double headed loonie so it would come out with This. Simone is the best as the thought of this being an actual case made truly uncomfortable. I enjoy your format choices. Be well

Peter Hudson

Forgot how great this show is, can't wait for episode 4! Also DB is probably cop jargin for "dead body" like Simone thought.

Peter Hudson

And Mindhunter would be awesome, but understandable if not wanting to make videos since one of you have already seen it. Amazing and infornative show though on crime history

MacGuffinStuff

I knew you guys would appreciate this show, the f*g writing though, right?!! And the performances... while I'll always remember McConaughey as Wooderson from Dazed and Confused, he's also a seriously great actor, this show is exhibit A, B, and C, D is Dallas Buyer's Club, and E is intErstellar.

Erich Bomke

@Simone, the Keyleth comment is so true. Totally the sun tree! Lets see if Campaign 3 is a True Detective spin off!

JoeySnowyNoey

I haven't seen this in forever and when I did I binged it in like two days, so I'm excited that y'all are giving me an excuse to watch it again!

JayF

Just in case it hasn't been pointed out, DB = dead body. Edit - And literally about 2 mins after I posted this is when you figured it out heh.

Githerax

I've never done this before, but I watched along twice to this one! I'm going to assume that you quickly ended the recording after the show was because you were speechless. Just you wait.

JarHead0351

Was really bum that Firefly did not win because it is truly a great show and movie too boot but got to say I do like this show now too - never watched before so I am new as you both are to it too. So, Thanks for inducing me to this show- I am hook on it too

Jon Johns

Hey y'all -- I'm a d&d dumb-dumb... So, are there ever campaigns that are investigations? Like... Crime investigations? That would be kind of fun...

Erik Lundmark

About the birds in Rusts hallucination (blackbirds, starlings?): They might as well have been filming the real thing and not put it in as a special effect. Google "starlings swirling" and you'll see what I mean.

Kim-Christian Nielsen

Fun fact: Historically speaking it is only recently that owls were symbols of wisdom. They used to be a symbol of evil. The horned owl was also known as the devil owl.

Githerax

Owls have been a symbol of wisdom far longer than 'devil owls'. The owl was the symbol of Athena, Greek goddess of wisdom, for over 2500 years. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Owl_of_Athena Owls as symbols of the Devil would obviously have to be long after the ancient Greek myth, since the first depiction of the Devil has having horns wasn't until the book of Revelation, written approx 100 CE, and it would be hundreds of years later when the apostate church would be paganized and began creating idolatrous iconography. 'Signs and Symbols in Christian Art' by George Ferguson says "The owl, since it hides in darkness and fears the light, has come to symbolize Satan, the Prince of Darkness" (page 8) https://archive.org/details/signssymbolsinch0000unse (needs an archive.org account to access). Note that there is no Scriptural reference to support that symbolism. The only Biblical references to owls refer to them as an 'unclean bird' (unsuitable for eating) and occasionally as being found in lonely and desolate places.

Awesome! So glad you guys are watching this. This is one of my favorite seasons of TV for sure. The creator talked about how each season was going to have its own inspirational genre. This seasons inspiration was the universe of Lovecraft, While he didn't create Hastur, The King in Yellow, it is for sure considered part of that world, Carcosa as well. I just adore this season, Great vid keep it up!

Andrew Bukovinszky

Can anyone please tell me if there are youtube edits of the Patreon exclusives like True Detective? I don't have the time to watch full length shows and movies, and I don't have copies of many of them, so the edits are super nice for me. I joined specifically for true detective and I thought it was going to be the same format as what's on YouTube.

Bugs1977

I kinda thought the format was gonna be like on Youtube as well. We really only just see George and Simone blown up and nothing of what they're reacting to. No sound from the show is also a bit jarring.

Bugs1977

Like Andrew above me I thought the reaction would be more like the regular Youtube format. It's nice seeing a longer reaction but no sound from what you're watching is a bit of a deal breaker for me. I get that copywrite laws are a thing but we can't really see or hear what you're reacting to, It greatly diminishes the experience. I did however find a reasonable solution which is to stream the actual show and overlap it with your reaction.

Tenn Seven

You're supposed to watch along with them. You start your own player when George says "1, 2, 3, play" and so all of the sound and video on your player is synched up with what they're watching. Also, it's "copyright" laws, like the "right" to copy something.

nate coleman

Is there a version where the sound is on and you're not covering the whole screen?
