True Detective Season 1: Episode 3 & 4 - Patreon Version

Y'know, I thought this would be a fun thing to rewatch with you guys, but honestly, I've gotten to here and realized -- this season just wasn't as good as I remember. I still remember how invested I was when it first aired, but honestly, the writing is kind of terrible (so much "crazy pussy!") and it's all just elevated by the incredible acting plus Fukunaga's direction. Yes, McConaughey and Harrelson are great, but the story is unendingly misogynistic, the opening credits are seriously a parody of themselves (so many brooding shots of the two men against flames, interspersed with so many nameless, faceless women's asses! SO MANY ASSES!), etc. I just can't keep watching. There is not a single female character of any depth in this season at all -- they're all placeholders -- hookers and victims and mistresses (and their boobs and butts), with one thankless major wife role (poor Michele Monaghan) who exists only to forward the men's stories. I do love how the main theme song was made fun of by the very funny romcom "The Lost City" a year or two back -- a major hidden character enters the scene, the manliest man ever, and of course this show's theme song played, and it was genuinely hilarious. This New Yorker piece summed it up perfectly for me: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2014/03/03/cool-story-bro

If I missed a comment, apologies. Simone asked if it was illegal to wear the flag, if she never got an answer, it's no. While we do have a flag code of conduct, it's merely a suggestion on respect. Wearing/burning or whatever is all covered by free speech.

Episode 4 is one of the best TV episodes of all time. A red hot jolt of adrenaline.

slashmastah

Ah, the famous 6 minute one shot scene! It was amazing!

Peter Hudson

Episode 4 is one of the best episodes in TV history, and that long shot near the end is even more impressive if the creators were telling the truth when they said there were no edits

Peter Hudson

There were moments purposely in it they said could be used for edits if necessary, but they said it wasn't necessary since they were able to pull it off without any

Jon Johns

Will Simone PLEASE write a kids book called "Everybody has a butt"

Great reaction! That unexpected freeze frame of Ledoux looking like a psycho, combined with the tense music, stunned me when I first watched this show. That was one of the moments in the first act of the show that really hooked me in. By the way, if y'all have already seen Game of Thrones, someone did an amazing intro for it in the style of True Detective's intro, which you can find on Youtube.

Pretty cool, I liked the banner dropping over the guy's eye- however, there was a disappointing dearth of butts.

David Murray

That amazing sequence (and the rest of the season) was shot by Adam Arkapaw, a cinematographer from a town about 30 minutes from me here in Australia. Great use of the best Grinderman song as well.

So what is the best way to watch these? Is it still just pulling everything up in separate windows and timing it or is there some better way?

You are right, "True Detective" has very complex written characters. But if you want to experience the most complex written characters ever written for TV, do us and yourselves the favor of watching the best show ever created. I´m talking about HBO´s "The Wire" obviously. Greetings from Germany, Chris

I'd love to see a reaction to The Wire, but I'm not sure they would like the idea of 60 episodes of one show!

Six minute tracking take. Holy shit.. that was so damn great! I'm blown away by how well put together that was. SIX MINUTES, NO CUTS.

Ah yes, your intro banter threw me back to one of my favorite A Perfect Circle songs, namely 'Counting Butts Like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums', can't forget that one.

Rewatching the show for like the 10th time and y'alls reaction for the second, thought I'd share a fun fact... "cheesecake" (which I was also unfamiliar with) is a VERY oldschool term referring to suggestive photos, like, 1940's style pinups. So, not fully nude, but suggestive erotica.
