Watchmen Directors Cut - Patreon Version

Sadly, I can't find the director's cut available anywhere these days.

Dioskur

Ok so if you have to use the "ultimate cut" to view this, you will have to pause the reaction a total of seven times. each time for several minutes, so its not hectic or anything, just a little annoying. Each time it is a part of the comic book storyline and the comic reader story. No scenes are changed during the normal part of the movie. I will add a list of the times you have to skip, so you know when to prepare. Obviously that's spoilerish. 1) ~24minutes: After Rorschach leaves Night Owl 2) ~60minutes: After Rorschach visites the grave 3) ~72minutes: After the fight with the criminals 4) ~100minutes: After Rorschach gets captured 5) ~118minutes: After the nightmare with the explosion 6) ~150minutes: After the book arrives at the newpaper 7) ~163minutes: After the screens show the explosions Hope this helps

I found this director's cut blu-ray in a pawn shop a few days ago so revisited this one properly. I hadn't seen the Boogie Nights reaction the first time around, so didn't know George was an award winning porn (cinematographer?) something-or-other. Now I just Imagine the director of the porns he worked on yelling "CUT!... Can someone get George to stop giggling and saying DONG over and over..."

pinkdino99

The TV show is OK and follows on the story in the present day. Far better shows exist like Sandman and Lovecraft Country. Also Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch which is such a "Marmite" movie.

Beddoe

I love this movie and I was really impressed with the 2019 TV show. I know it's been a couple of years but you really should watch it. It's only 9 episodes and I believe you would enjoy it. Also, I hope Simone is feeling better..... Wait, it's been two years so prolly yeah.

Tim Boxall

Looking forward to this as a watchalong tonight as its a favourite film of mine, but I'll be damned if I can find the Directors Cut to stream on any UK available service!

Dor

So excited, but there's a problem. This IS the best cut of the film, but it is not available for streaming anywhere online - only the theatrical and ultimate cuts are out there. No idea how to watch this. Hrm. :/

Andrew Smith

Dang it love this movie but the Directors cut isn't streaming anywhere

Simon Haynes

Sadly same issue, can't find this version anywhere.

I wish you would have watched the ultimate cut, but that’s ok. So I would not watch the tv show yet. It’s excellent, but it’s actually a sequel to the graphic novel, which has a different ending. Snyder felt the ending of the comic was to weird for most audiences, so he went with the ending in the movie. Just finished the reaction. In regards to your questions. The expanded watchmen comics were created much later after the original 12 issue series came out in the 80s. Alan Moore has nothing to do with them. Like I said earlier, the movie catalyst is different, but the overall ending is the same. However the graphic novel ending is integrated into the story for the excellent TV show, so before watching it I would at least familiarize yourselves with it.

Andrew Smith

I just wish they would have picked the theatrical cut since the directors isn't available anywhere online to stream.

BHillzebub

If it helps anyone I'm gonna use the Ultimate cut (Amazon prime UK £3:99) and just pause their reaction during the comicbook parts and either watch those sections or FFWD then resync my reaction.

Foodassassin4life

So does it just have extra comic scenes and that’s the only difference between The directors cut and the ultimate cut?

olly.enn

The constant "dong"-fixation was a bit much. I mean come on...

P S

Oh awesome, have not seen the directors cut. 3 hours? NO Problem! Thanks Bingebuns!

Lou Gallucci

Lol. 30 minutes in "very funny music choice" is a song about nuclear apocalypse.

Githerax

Yeah George, nobody knew what the heck with the sex scene.

Spooky Dooky

Amelie is a great film. But most americans don't like reading subtitles. And they don't care about foreign films.

Steven Rose

Director’s cut?! Why do you hate us T_T

David Crabtree

I can't find the Director's Cut anywhere online other than purchasing the DVD.

Christopher Larimer

Yeah it would have been better if they picked the theatrical or ultimate cut instead, it took me like an hour just to find a working torrent of the director's cut since it's not streaming anywhere lol.

BHillzebub

Anyone having problems finding the Directors cut can use the Ultimate cut. Check my earlier comment for a idea of how it will work. Not ideal I know but better than nothing.

I first watched this movie with Ultimate cut, so i always miss the Black Freighter bit (comic book). Because it adds to the grim setting and creates a bond between a boy and newspaper seller. But, DCut is fine too, adds some bits here and there, makes some dialogs longer and move fulfilling. I think aside Dr. Manhattan they all were meant to be just super trained and skilled masked vigilantes. Which makes this story more grounded, which i liked a lot. I also love song choices, that intro is so classy and the sex scene with Hallelujah, yes it is corny, but it is cool :)

Persnickity

The theatrical version of this movie definitely hung blue dong. I remember vividly because I went to see this movie in theaters with my girlfriend at the time and her dad. We were both 16 and it was one of the most awkward moments of my life.

Love this version and always appreciate a reason to dust it off. As someone who’s only seen the movie before watching the series, I’d say it’s worth a watch, they do a decent job of filling in the differences between the original source material and Snyder’s interpretation

REDR58

Rorschach was by far the best thing about the movie. Jackie Earle Haley really does a magnificent job with him. The rest of the movie is merely passable to me at best. But it is way better than 300 which I found to be an overlong, repetitive slog. Here's hoping you do The Final Cut version of Blade Runner which I imagine is coming up soon.

ScotchBeard78

Please, PLEASE, reaction to the HBO "sequel" series, that picks up that world 30 years later, in our time. It's incredibly well written and acted.

Tim Boxall

I ended up buying the Ultimate Cut on Amazon Prime and re-syncing after each Black Freighter segment. Other than those interludes, it synchs up perfectly. Great reaction to a marathon film with so many little easter eggs hidden away - for example, Rorschachs suspicions about Veidts sexual preferences may be confirmed by the folder marked "BOYS" when they get into his computer. Little things like that are tucked away all over the place.

Tim Boxall

Oh, and only two "Jeepers" in a movie with such a plethora of glowing blue dongs?! I'm surprised! Thanks for a great watchalong peeps, it was a blast

Tim Boxall

Also, forgot to mention another sly tip of the hat to the graphic novel - the device created by Osterman and Veidt is the Sub QUantum Intrinsic Device. The acronym will lead to the novel ending...but I won't spoil that.

Andrew Roach

I thought I was watching two children react to this movie who had to laugh every time a dong was shown. Yes the sex scene, the dongs and the violence were in the theatrical version as these were the times when an R rating actually meant something, hell that even a big budget movie would be made as an R rating is virtually unheard of now. Neat also that despite all the horrific violence and gore it was the mild tit and ass shots that made you wonder if that was in the theatrical cut. Despite my tone you are actually among my top favorite reactors, despite also all the annoying damn nitpick comments. "She is not covered in soot" really, just enjoy the moments.

Grand Moff Slackin'

The HBO series is a continuation of the graphic novel rather then the movie. There are some key differences between novel and film. But the miniseries is great and worth a watch.

ChickensAreRacist

Great reactions! And good on you sir for calling and recognizing the Rameses II part.

You guys mentioned Amelie doing terrible. I've never seen it, but wanted to watch it with you guys. Problem is I can't find it anywhere. The only major platform where it even popped up in the results was Prime Video, but it was unavailable for purchase. I understand the movie is French. I know you guys are in Canada. I live in the US. Maybe that has something to do with it? Maybe streaming services have decided a French movie isn't worth licensing to an American audience, but it would be more well received in Canada. Maybe I need to get a VPN. I dunno.

Rorschach is validated more in the movie than he is in the novel. The controversy of his ideals, uncompromising deontology, is important to remember, especially when contrasted to Ozymandias's steadfast utilitarianism. Watchmen takes the superhero tropes and forces us to ask real philosophical and political questions. "Good" and "bad" are not easily defined. Rorschach was a bigot. Not only did he frequently detest "liberal sensitivities" like rehabilitative justice and criminal reform, but he actively despised the homeless, drug users, queer folk, and women. This should be seen as problematic, if not given because of his anger issues and narrowly defined concept of justice (which for him often means being as aggressive as he wants to whomever he personally feels deserves harm, regardless of severity of the crime or possibility of innocence), then because of his own hypocrisy in conflating the law with what's right while actively playing vigilante. Rorschach prides himself in being morally centered and uncompromising, but doesn't recognize that Ozymandias was also uncompromising. Being uncompromising means nothing in itself as a virtue; it's how you measure virtue that's important. Rorschach didn't understand this. He only understood vengeance and called it justice, but the world is not so black and white. It's grey. Right and wrong are always shifting and changing shape, and the right decision will differ depending on your perspective. Exactly what Rorschach's mask symbolized.

Seconding everyone saying to watch the show, it's incredible. Just familiarize yourself with the ending of the graphic novel vs. the movie, otherwise elements of the show will be a little confusing. Additionally, there has only been one US president who has served more than 2 terms, FDR. This was before the 2 term limit was established. Prior to FDR it was kind of an unwritten rule that presidents only served 2 terms, because Washington stepped aside after 2. FDR broke the tradition and was elected to 4 terms, and the constitution was amended a few years after WW2 to officially implement the 2 term limit. So there's no clause that presidents can run for additional terms due to extreme circumstances. I believe in this universe, because of America winning in Vietnam and no Watergate (the comedian reference killing Woodward and Bernstein, the 2 reporters who were crucial in exposing WG), Nixon is extremely popular and the term limit amendment is repealed allowing him to be elected for more terms.

meh....the watchmen tv show on Amazon prime is not that good, not a "must see" like Squid Game, for example. Just watch the critical drinker's critique of it, he summarizes the many weaknesses very well.

tristan renaut

The end is kind of meh, but the show has some incredible moments and some memorable episodes, far batter than Squid Games at least.

Odd Thomas

Definitely recommend the TV series - one of the best series of the last decade imo
