True Detective: Season 1 - Episode 7 & 8 - Patreon Version

Khan1001

The most disturbing, haunting and tension filled crime thriller ever with incredible performances from all the actors especially Harrelson & McConaughey and the fact that McConaughey was filming Interstellar around the same time as this and switching between two very different characters makes it even more impressive. Yes, you can skip season 2, it has 0 connection to season 1 and goes in a different direction which just wasn't as good, its not terrible, all the actors do a good job with what they are given but the writing & story are just not the same quality like the masterpiece that was season 1. Season 3 is a return to form and well worth watching, the story connects to season 1 and although Harrelson & McConaughey aren't in it, their characters and their investigation are mentioned as it ties in with what happens in season 3, you guys should watch it if and when you get the chance.

Spacecat44

The only other single season of TV as good as this I've ever seen is Watchmen (2019). Only 9 episodes and it's a masterpiece. You guys should add it to a tv poll

As redddfer44 said, I was hooked by the show for its supernatural theme. As I began watching, the connection to H.P. Lovecraft’s stories or the King in Yellow from Raymond Chandler was so obvious that I was fascinated. But one of the greatest qualities of the show lies in the multiple interpretations you can have of the story, and personally, I love a supernatural tale that allows its audience to decide.

Grimbane42

I would personally like to see the 2nd season. Might not happen but really would like it.

pinkdino99

S02 is a mess. The writers try to be too clever with a thousand plotlines all interweaving. Worth watching off camera, then watching a YouTube vid to tell you what the heck it is about (that vid is likely >2hrs long !) S03 is great. Good cast, good script, good atmosphere.

Season 2 does not deserve the hate. It is well worth watching. The only reason it is rated so low is because it was in season one’s shadow.

Marylou inProgress

This was fucking transcendent. Wow. The way it goes through the absolute depths of shit and misery and comes out the other side with this defiant sense of hope. Not to mention just how confident every decision in the show is. The hard hitting needle drops, the methodical pacing... Just everything. I'm so glad you guys watched this because I wouldn't have checked it out otherwise, and it was a real treat to watch with y'all. I know this is an old video but I hope you both did find something nice to cheer you up after this <3 What a wild trip this was.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who appreciates the message in the end. I actually joined Cinebinge a few years ago so I could see their reaction. 4:34am here and I just finished my third watch with Simone and George, and I think my 7th or 8th full watch overall.

Interesting, I watched season 1 when it came out, and obviously I loved it. but after that I did not return to the show until now, watching this reaction. I was not planning on watching season 2 because of the almost universal hate it's gotten, but your comment has convinced me to at least give it a shot, crossing fingers :P Edit: Sorry for the very late reply :)

I have watched this like a dozen times at least since it aired. I have the DVD, and I can stream it from HBO if I desire but chose to rewatch it with George and Simone. It's like y'all are my friends. The 2020's are the era of parasocial weirdness and I'm not mad about it. Great rewatch and no sync is sick.

The place used for Carcosa at the end of True Detective Season 1 is Fort Macomb, a 19th-century abandoned brick fortress located outside New Orleans, Louisiana. This dilapidated fort was filmed to represent the lair of the Yellow King and his cult in the show's finale. Fort Macomb was built in the 1820s to guard the Chef Menteur Pass, a strategic waterway. Carcosa is a fictional city that originates in the writing of Ambrose Bierce in 1886 and later became a central element in the "Carcosa Mythos" through Robert W. Chambers' book, The King in Yellow. In these works, Carcosa is a city of mystery and terror, often associated with the deity known as The Yellow King and a fictional play that drives its audience to madness. The concept has since been adopted and expanded in various horror and science fiction works, including TV series like True Detective, where it represents a physical, ritualistic place of a cult worshiping The Yellow King.

You two are awesome. Thanks for sharing so much time with us. It is so much fun watching movies and shows with people that get as excited as me.

Back in 1995 the "scar" guy had quite a bit of facial growth which covered the scars. Also if you go back to Ep.3 you'll notice that Rust was mostly looking at the old school building, and not the lawnmower guy himself, and then he got distracted by the radio call.

I’m glad you guys enjoyed this season. So Nic Pizzolatto created and wrote the series, and all eight episodes were directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga. The show was a water cooler hit for the 8 weeks it was airing, so HBO commissioned another season. The issue is they rushed it out, where with the first season Pizzolatto had a extended amount of time to map out the story and sew up plot holes. That’s why the second season is rated much lower. I sorta like the season, it has a legitimately good mystery, but they needed more time in the writers room to redraft the scripts and tighten up the telling of the plot. They also had different directors for the episodes, so there are some tonal inconsistencies. For the third season HBO cut Pizzolatto and his team some slack, so they got more time to work on the series. And it shows, the third season has a great story that really pulls you in with might tighter scripting. I think you should watch both seasons, but the argument can be made to not record a reaction to season 2, and just record 3. They are working on a season 4, we’ll see if anything comes of it.

Man, we need to stop putting Simone through shit like this. So hard to watch... just imagine all of us hugging you in these moments... . ----- My hopes went up when you wanted to recount butts... but, guess we have to wait for next season for you to find the last butt in the intro :-) No, just kidding... Or am I? :-)

Regarding Season 2, it's a completely different set of actors, characters and story, even different in style and tone. Personally, I can isolate it from my feelings about S1, and in isolation it's a good series. Most people were waiting for more of S1 and were disappointed in S2. Forget that it's 'True Detective' and you'll enjoy it more. Edit: S3 is, likewise, new cast new story. It's fine.

Githerax

I agree with this, and George does too, he's held back some things and recommended to Simone that she 'not watch' certain things, and she wisely takes his word on it. I avoid darker stuff myself, I won't even watch Schindler's List despite it's relevancy because I'm already well-read and well-weary of the horror of that subject. And I outright despise the fetishized violence of some movies, like 'Hostel' etc. I have withheld certain recommendations and votes for this reason too. But there are some movies/TV that are so well-made that even despite their dark material they can be appreciated for their art form. That's why I recommended and voted for this series. But that's also why I voted for 'Firefly' next, so Simone can have a cool-down off this dark stuff.

The original idea behind the show was to do a different detective story each season, with a different cast and a different tone. Season 1 is a fucking masterpiece, without question, one of the best seasons of television ever produced. A lot of that is the mastery of tone and the brilliance of the cast. Season 2 is not even half as good. To be fair, that’s a hell of an act to follow. It takes place in LA and has much more of a Chinatown feel. I personally think it has too many primary characters (four instead of two). Season 3, however, is a return to form. Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff (the villain from Blade) are the detectives, and it’s far more similar in tone to the first season, with an extremely compelling central mystery and fantastic characters. Also, it definitely takes place in the same universe Marty and Rust inhabit, and that’s the most I can say about that. You can skip Season 2, but definitely check out Season 3.

Malazan Sapper

I enjoyed season 2 much more than most people seem to have enjoyed it. If you watch it, just try to separate it from this season as they might as well be different shows.

E.P.B.F.

Season 3 was better than Season 2 and tonally closer to Season 1 but still didn't come even close to it in terms of overall quality imo. Part of the problem is that Season 3 has a very uneven cast. Where Season 1 had Harrelson and McConaughey playing off one another and their supporting cast members too achieve a sum-greater-than-the total-of-its-parts synergy, Mahershala Ali is simply so much better an actor than everybody else around him, including his nominal co-lead Steven Dorff, his performance dominates every scene he's in to the point of turning it into a one man show. And the writers know it too, in fact they count on it for the story's narrative framing device. It's all about the personal journey of Ali's character, and even the case takes a clear backseat to that. Which means Ali has to carry the whole thing by himself. And he does yeoman work no mistake, however it's also all that you get: one extremely talented guy flexing his thespian muscles all of the time, and everything and everyone else exists solely in support of it. So if you liked the first season and expect more of that chances are Season 3 will be a disappointment to you. It's a very different animal altogether. The story is much slower, structurally complex, character focused, the ending anticlimactic.

Also, out of curiosity I looked up the 'Carcosa' location. It was a fort built in 1822 to guard the coast near New Orleans, abandoned in 1871, now an overgrown ruin. Also also: George and Simone, if you ever need a new, fresh 'cleansing' movie, try 'Strictly Ballroom' (1993) starring nobody you've ever seen or heard of, never will be a poll winner here, great fun happy movie I guarantee you'll enjoy.

soundtrack for this season was soooo good.

I love Rustin Cohle's arch in this one. You guys should take comfort in the fact that the pessimist found hope and love to look forward to. Season one has a very hopeful and upbeat ending. I loved the ending so much. Season 3 has nothing to with season 2. You can skip the second season if you don't feel like watching it.

Jack Urmson

Season 2 gets more hate than it deserves. Mostly, because season 1 was a damn near impossible act to follow. Season 3 was very strong though with an ending that crushes.

Githerax

Watched your reaction a second time; Simone, you have a great voice for radio! KUSC in San Diego is hiring Host Trainees, ever think about doing radio?

Jon Johns

I've seen this series at least a dozen times, with reactors, and on my own. I still tear up at the end. Every Damn Time. I hope you two, as time goes by, feel the same astonishing respect for this show as the rest of us do. It is a triumph.

Kris

Honestly, the worst part is how GOOD the first season is. It makes the next season just seem like hollow imitations in spite of their genuine quality.

David Wayne

the synopsis in a nut shell. the duality of mankind.....Colhe says he is a bad man that keeps the evil men at bay.. they are both flawed as is every character on the show... everyone has some kind of character flaw in real like too albeit not to the extremes that the characters do. Addiction is also key component as well. ie. alcohol, sex, drugs and deception. We all have our yin to balance out the yang.

David Wayne

btw...limp biscuit - rolling rolling rolling- lol

Season 2 is definitely worth the watch. Most people got on the hate train without even watching it. It's very different from the first and honestly not as good. How could it be ? But it has great performances and great moments and ambiance once you get into it. I hope you guys watch it.

Bugs1977

The first season of True Detective is by far the best single season of television viewing I've ever had the fortune of viewing. Nothing since has reached that bar. Breaking Bad was good, I enjoyed moments of The Sopranos, The Wire and Game Of Thrones. But this hit on a different level for me.

leavemealone

Season 2 is on par with Season 1. People just wanted more of the same, they couldn't follow the (admittedly convoluted on first viewing) plot and jumped on a hate train. Season 2 features the best scenes by far in the entire anthology, has equally amazing acting and cinematography as season 1, a great setting although not as distinct as spooky louisiana cult murders and a much better theme than season 1 which I won't spoil. The overall theme is the reason I consider it as amazing as s1. Season 3 on the other hand is very bad compared to s2 and s1 and people only liked it because it was a "return to form" by repeating story beats from s1 instead of doing its own thing. I like parts of s3, it set up some cool things and the acting and setting was good but it had by far the worst most scrambled-togeteher ending which soured the taste of anything they attempted throughout its runtime.

Coming in on Simone singing Limp Bizkit is a mood setter!

redddfer44

Saw this much later than most! It's funny how George said you'd be disappointed if the show turned supernatural; the reason it came into my radar in the first place in 2015 was because the Yellow King / Carcosa stuff (as you probably know by now) has its root in supernatural cosmic horror. So through all the eight episodes I kept waiting for more of that and felt somewhat disappointed because I didn't really get any. The show was actually much better on rewatch for me because I knew what to expect. Not sure how much you still remember about the show, but I'm thinking that the reason Maggie was able to manipulate Rust was because he was so damn alone, fortified behind the walls of his philosophy against life that had hurt him so much. And Maggie always respected him and admired his virtues, probably looked him the right way. The way that might've given him hope. For more possessed men solving crimes, check out the movie L. A. Confidential.

Another great crime thriller that you both will absolutely love is Bosch. It's Amazon Prime and has 7 seasons and has a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. Just like True Detective season 1, it's a masterpiece and you both will love the cast.
