The inspiration for the movie I believe was mostly Keanu Reeves training gunfighting. So it's easy to see how you got the impression it could be based on a videogame. The greatest part I think is the gun safety procedures they developed for the movies. Not only are the gunfights carefully planned out and rehearsed before putting the guns in, and not only do they have a minimum of three people checking that each gun is safe before using it, but they make their own prop guns that literally can't be loaded with shells or fire them; all they do is repeater actions and ejecting casings, and everything else is CGI. Safety is cool. And in current news from 2024, NASA has just discovered ice on Mars, on the peak of Olympus Mons, the highest mountain in the known universe. It seems funny now that I'm watching this movie where John Wick symbolically puts the gods of Olympus on ice all over the place.

I'm wired on coffee, it is 745am and I am ready for some Simone getting upset about canines. I watch two reaction sites, one of them NEVER swears and Simone swears beautifully...especially if you hurt a dog. 4 minutes in and Simone is biting her lip...ready to cry...and I'm already teary

- George, you want 'gun fu', then you want 'Equilibrium' (2002) Throw it on the pile! - Simone: "you know where Bilbo's face changes? Has any one done an edit where it changes to Willem Dafoe?" George: *laughs* Willem (watching the reaction): *cries alone* - George: "Where is this (assassin hotel in John Wick)?": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flatiron_Building - Also, why was Beethoven's 9th playing in the church? It's not religious music.

That's first time i got the intro reference from Simone and George didn't :D Simone is breathtaking ;)

The quality of Russian language in this movie is on par with every Hollywood movie. Very bad :) Again, they ask to speak Russian for actors who never have spoken it and native English speakers have problems with some parts, same as Russian native have problems with English and so. Some words sound better and you can still understand what they are talking about. As these are main characters there is no way around i guess other than dubbing them with voice actors, but that would be weird. I don't understand when they do this with extras though (in general, not in this movie).

JediLounger

Yes, keep watching. John Wick 4 is due out next year, and John Wick 5 is in pre production. There is also a TV series being made based around the hotel.

Anthony Perez

Humans are not BOUNCY...if you fall face first you MIGHT use arms and it would appear you bounced or if you knew Judo you might be able to ameliorate some of the fall by using your arms. And in actuality Wick would have reloaded BEFORE the magazine ran out. It's called a tactical reload. But at least the movie doesn't have the annoying scene where the guy gets shot and then rips off his shirt to show that they're wearing a bulletproof vest. And the cars don't blow up when they fall from heights.

You guys didn't recognize Sully from Commando!

Einherj

I suggest an action crime movie called Payback (1999). Not sure if it's well known or not, but I haven't heard people really talk about it much.

Onno Smits

The pitbull that he "stole" at the end had a big red stamp on their chart saying "SCHEDULED TO BE PUT DOWN", so don't worry. There's not another owner now missing their dog. I think you should watch the other ones (or at least put them on the polls), Keanu leads them all. And they are all good! They do more with the worldbuilding, which in my opinion is the best part. And the action stays just as gnarly, which is great!

When John asks the guy if he has lost weight and he replies with 60 pounds. It is actually code telling John how may security guys are inside.

Sean

I have learned from these reactions that all roads lead to Sex and the City.

Einherj

Apparently Sex and the City is the romance version of Star Trek: everyone's been in it.

Githerax

This piqued my curiosity, because he answered using kilograms, but the subtitles represented it as pounds. 60 lb = 27 kg. Then I googled 'how many kills red circle john wick' and got answers ranging from 28 to 30. I guess if we count Iosef's "friends" as not-guards (the two in the locker room, then the muscle-guy in the pool), and subtract that from 30, we get... 27. I think you're on to something.

The Maestro

so you mentioned that it felt like a video game early on and I think the director is actually going to be making a Streets of Rage movie

I've heard of the face-palming lament of Russian speakers about the 'Baba Yaga' bit. I don't speak Russian, but even I knew that Baba Yaga is a witch in a hut. This is an excerpt from an article: "It seems the screenwriters confused two Russian mythological creatures: a babayka and the Baba Yaga. Indeed, these names sound roughly the same. But babayka is a Russian word for the creature that is referred to as the bogeyman in other cultures. This creature usually takes away children who misbehave. The Scots call it bogie, the Poles call it bobo, the Italians – babau, and so on. All these words come from an ancient Indo-European root word baba, meaning a forefather, an immortal progenitor. With time, these words came to denote a dark, supernatural being that people frightened their children with – the bogeyman."

I've really enjoyed all of the John Wick movies so far, and I'd watch your reactions to them if you did them. John Wick 3 in particular has some of the best fight sequences I've ever seen in a movie.

Theoshin

Can we make George watch the lake house for the next Keanu Reeves movie :P

JayF

I love the movie but I've always felt the same way about the puppy scene, Simone. As an Animal Services Officer and Animal Cruelty Investigator I find the trend of violence towards animals in movies to be extremely repugnant. I felt it was cheap and lazy writing in this one. They could have gotten the same revenge story line in many different ways that didn't involve an animal.

Tomas

God, haha, watching George just sitting there listening to Simone blubbering about the puppy while knowing what's coming, just like "All your joy will turn to ashes"

Marko T.

I have to recommend Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) again. It has Keanu Reeves.

Alec S

Seconded for "Equilibrium". Never really liked John Wick series, just your basic revenge porn flick. At least Equilibrium has an interesting character redemption arc.

Richard B.

Might I suggest Equilibrium (2002) if you want a "Gun Fu" movie to watch.

Garrett Grantham

This movie came along at the perfect time. Tacticool was becoming a thing on social media, shooting sports were actually gaining visibility as being something actually fun, and when the rest of Hollywood still had their actors teacupping like crazy, Keanu actually employed a little used strategy called “giving a spit” and it paid off really well!

Logan Kerlee

Holy crap, I really enjoyed this movie reaction! This was so awesome!

JoeySnowyNoey

I'm actually not really into action movies they're probably my least favorite genre, but when it comes to this series I'm all about it! If every action movie was made to this level I would love this genre.

Thomas Yanez

Sure hope they get to John Wick 2 soon, since it picks up immediately where the #1 left off.

Odd Thomas

Talking of John Woo I really hope you watch Face/Off. One of THE best action movies of the 90s.
