Firefly: Episode 2 & 3 - Patreon Version

Australia As I'm new to Cinebinge Patreon, I'd sat this has been mentioned, but Joss Weadon Dollhouse is definitely worth a watch if you have not seen it.

Travis May

Yup, this is why I joined. I'm excited for everything else, but this is why...

Amelie W

You might have heard this one before, but the Starship Troopers-looking armor you mention is literally from the Starship Troopers movie set. I believe leftovers not shown in the actual movie, but, what's the diff.

Bekka NoyB

Read somewhere that Train Job was actually the 1st episode to air on FOX.

Andrew T

Nice to hear you're collaborating with Diegesis. Looking forward to it. Being a video editor myself, I've been hanging out in his livestream editing sessions, and learning a bit about his process. Good guy. Much respect for his honest perspectives on a bunch of things, plus being introduced to some new (not "nu") metal music.

Whooo Hooo

Andrew T

The fed squad in the train whose costumes looked Starship Troop-esque was indeed the very costumes used in Starship Troopers. I believe the reason was convenience and/or budgetary.

Xandermud

This show takes place entirely in a single star system (not sol) . Apparently it has 5 main stars, 7 protostars, 75 planets, and 149 moons. There's no FTL travel or anything so travel to other star systems would take forever.

Awsome reaction to an awesome show! 👍

Now that you've seen The Train Job, a bit of Firefly background: Firefly only got the one partial season because of perhaps the worst mismanagement by a network in recent memory. The Train Job is emblematic of the worst of this. See, after watching the initial double episode pilot, the network execs didn't think it would 'grab' audiences. "Where was all the action?", they wondered. They'd been marketing this as a sci-fi action comedy (remember "Meet the most spaced-out crew in the galaxy"?), not this more serious character-focused piece. So partway through filming the season Whedon was forced to write The Train Job as a new, replacement pilot. Audiences saw this episode FIRST. Imagine coming into The Train Job without the pilot and trying to understand the show or its characters. Madness. The initial double-episode was actually not aired on TV until months later as the FINAL episode aired. And this isn't the only time the network aired the show out of order. In fact, the airing order went: 3,4,7,8,9,5,6,10,11,15,1+2. Episodes 12,13, and 14 were never aired at all and no one saw them till the DVD came out. Between the order disrupting continuity, the poor action-comedy marketing, several preemptions for sports, and a couple of timeslot changes during the show's short run, the show never really had a shot. Tragedy. And then, of course, the DVD came out and the 15 episodes we have became one of the most beloved sci-fi series of all time all by themselves.

She lies, watch Angel instead. Waaaaay betterer.

Great reactions, Simone and George! In "The Train Job", it seems like all reactors say the same thing. "Nobody heart the shots?" Has no one actually ridden on a train? Within the train cars themselves are sound suppressors to keep external sounds (i.e. the sound of the train itself) out. It's kind of like when you're on a jet airline. You don't hear the engines, And if you do, they are at a low rumble. When you walk between the cars, you can hear the high decibel sounds of the train. The shots occurred in the 5th car. The rest of the feds were two cars away. No way they would have heard the shots. It's doubtful anyone would hear the shots in the very next cars as well. In "Bushwacked", we see just how scared of Reavers Jayne is. We saw it in the Pilot episode as well. Pretty much Reavers are the only ones he actively wants to stay away from.

It is a fantastic show :-). Really enjoying watching the episodes with you again... . In regards of your questions: The episodes are loosely connected, but not a string of events. So you will find same people reappearing and story parts continued... really funny ones and some not so funny... .

Ian Forbes

Appreciate the fact-checking on Chinese related elements of the show, George. Obviously, it’s a TV show so it’s not surprising there are inconsistencies or inaccuracies, but as I know nothing, I’m very glad you’re pointing out these things. Please continue doing so!

Wally Hartshorn

Most older shows are episodic for the simple reason that we didn't have streaming services back then. Imagine finding out about a great show, but only after you missed the first 6 episodes, with no way to go back and watch them. You would be lost. It would be like trying to figure out what is going on after missing the first 30 minutes of a movie. You probably wouldn't bother. That's why older shows made sure that each episode contained a story. There might be an overarching story line in the background, but you slowly pick that up while watching these shorter stories.

Wally Hartshorn

re: Jayne being scared of reavers My suspicion is that something happened when Jayne was a child that gave him a heightened fear of reavers.

I'd love to see you guys share a big fat joint with Mr. Video.

The interrogation scene editing was brilliant :)

George Baxter

I would like to say Firefly is set 500 years in the future, so there's a good possibility Chinese culture has changed... especially because within this Universe America and China merged a century ago. Im sure the show isnt that authentic but I always appreciated their take on future worlds. Like with the previous episode when you two discuss the planet conversion process and settlers. That's why they live like 'cowboys'. Outer rim planets haven't been fully settled yet so they use more simplistic technology and even horses for convenience. Its a well though out World

Sean Novack

Yeah George...you might want to reconsider your opinion of Book. Not sure what kind of preconception you're walking into on this series, but you're WAY off! They did screw up some things on the series, but a lot of it was also intended to show 500+ years of lingual shift and a conflation with English being set in the year 2517. I've been a firearms instructor for nearly 20 years. Nobody likes it when I nitpick films & shows with guns either, mainly because people in Hollywood don't know shite about them and always screw it up (even if thankfully it isn't to Alec Baldwin-levels of incompetence). Sometimes you just have to hit the "I believe" button.

Torsten Maekler

If you watch the episodes on DisneyPlus, there is an intro before each episode that says AD 2513...

Logan Kerlee

Oooh, awesome! I'll be watching this reaction in a bit. I'm excited! :)

Every reactor does firefly YouTube is becoming as original as Hollywood

Twiska Brand

Hollywood redoes the same script with a different paint job and calls it a new movie. Reactors on YouTube upload their first reaction to shows and movies with their thoughts and opinions on the show/movie. Totally the same...?

Twiska Brand

That's why I was not too fond of the new seasons of Lucifer on Netflix. I always wished they would cut the procedural case format and focus on the character interactions and season-long case investigations, but as it was a network show, I understood why it had to be that way. But when the show moved to Netflix, I expected them to ditch that since they cut the episode number per season. In my opinion, that format is a holdover from a long-dead age of media, and it's high time we moved away from that, especially if the show is exclusive to a streaming service.

Stretch

there was deff Stephen King vibes with the tricyle and red balloon!

Alan Kobb

Joss Whedon frequently shows Summer Glau barefoot. She actually studied ballet and was serious about becoming a dancer. She was hired to play a ballerina on an episode of Angel, which YOU SHOULD HAVE KNOWN!!! Anyway, that's where she got associated with Joss Whedon, and h brought her in for Firefly as well as Dollhouse. She is very graceful on her feet, even just when walking, and it shows.

Patrick Evans

Shindig is probably my favorite episode

Rezblade

Collaborate with James versus cinema !!!!

Logan Kerlee

You two watching this makes me feel so happy! I love this show, for that reason. Most anybody who's introduced to it will find it entertaining or fun in one way or another. It's good stuff!! I'm looking forward to more episodes of this. :) It really is a shame that this only has the one season.. but it's something that's totally rewatchable so I'm not too upset about it, really.

Florian Hoyer

its neither universe or galaxy, its just a solar system with alot of planets

Foodassassin4life

I know this isn't relevant to the show your watching but please watch Lucky Number Sleven it stars Josh Hartnett and Bruce Willis. It's freaking awesome

Deserana12

I second this, it’s awesome!

Daniel P.

You mentioned the future collab. If you two get the chance, you should do a video with Popcorn in Bed, she's fantastic!

A Red Mage Named Blue

The reason the Fed armour looks like Starship Trooper armour is because that's exactly what it is. After Starship Troopers wrapped, the armour was put aside and has been used for many sci-fi shows since

Vert

FWIW, I've been watching you guys for a while now. I became a patron because you started watching this.

Tall Paul

Maybe the "George needs to watch Buffy" and the "we need some more colabs" goals can be combined, several good Buffy reactors who might be willing to do some greatest hits episodes

Tim Boxall

Great stuff guys! Would love to see you collab with Ashleigh Burton who does Millennial Movie Mondays!

david moreland

I highly second the Buffy recommendation! Was a naysayer for years but finally gave in and was so hooked I watched the first season all in one sitting all twelve episodes and had all the other seasons ordered somewhere in between, just astoundingly good entertainment.

Spooky Dooky

I have a feeling the Sheriff used to be a Browncoat. So they had some in-explainable camaraderie. Then in the next episode, the single red baloon gives the feeling of Pennywise from Stephen King's "IT". It was a kind of horror based episode.

lespea

I still haven't seen the show in its entirety so it's really fun going through it with you all! As for future collabs I really like Natalie Gold!

Rezblade

👆🏼 It’s something else we wanted Nathan to do so he helped fund it himself

squix

Just for the record... Here in the south, skeeter means mosquito. Just to save you some confusion down the line...

Arek Schneyer

So- I understand I probably won't get any kind of response given how late I am, but George-- Is that a poster behind you with the Nine Honorblades in a ring? Please oh please tell me it is.

Seymor Butz

Finally became a Pateron, just to watch this. Going to be a great weekend!!!
