'Hot Shots' is a must watch after this!

This movie has not aged well! The tomcats are no longer used. The aerial cinematography is not realistitic. The acting and dialogue are very cringey. But, it was one of Tom Cruise's breaktrhough roles. I haven't seen the sequal yet, but it looks better than the first, especially if Maverick has been making his forturne as a top tier test pilot. If you haven't seen it yet, u2 should give "The RIght Stuff" a try. That movie has aged very well compared to Top Gun.

I always hated the message of this movie. Extreme jingoism. Like a straight Starship Troopers Should be titled. Frat boys in the sky

Great reaction! For a really good Scott movie, this time from Ridley, may I recommend Thelma and Louise.

In honour of fun action movies with soundtracks of our youth, I present to you: The Highlander.

The jet F-14 Tomcat is retired and replaced by F-18 Super Hornet which is a much smaller jet. It was retired mainly because of the high cost of maintaining it and that it's capabilities wasn't that needed in a post cold war world where the Soviet Union was no longer considered the enemy. Too bad as it's the most bad ass jet ever :) They actually play more that 2 songs in the movie LOL and the soundtrack is really great. Most of the songs were indeed made for the movie.

Come on guys... you should have mirrored the film poster, with George sitting on Simone's shoulder :-)

Tim Robbins played Maverick’s post-Goose (Anthony Edwards) co-pilot in the final dogfight.

They release the poll winner reactions on Saturdays now to give more time for editing.

They did fly later versions of the F14 in limited roles until 2006 though! In fact when the original F-18 Hornet was needing major updates, while an upgraded "Super Hornet" was picked there was a proposal for a hugely modernized version of the F-14 instead. Would've been interesting to replace its own replacement in a way...

Simone's salute attempt reminded me of Rimmer from Red Dwarf

Rezblade

The whole fighter pilot was the intruder , but Iron Eagle and Top Gun glamorized it

Look for "Quentin Tarantino about Top Gun" on YouTube for a detailed explanation of the film's theme.

I just realized that I now cringe at Top Gun the same way I cringed when I watched the war movies President Reagan was in. It wasn't so bad when I was a kid. Back then, I was fascinated with the jets and didn't pay any attention to the quality of the story, the dialogue, or the acting. Looking at Top Gun now, there is no way that this would inspire me to join the military if I was a teenager.

The past is a foreign country. Also you need to cut the people who made this movie some slack. It was the 80ies, man, they were young and needed the money... for cocaine... so much cocaine...

Well, according to George's intuition, shared by longstanding popular opinion, 'straight' is not exactly an adjective well suited to describe Top Gun. I mean even the Boderlands game spoofed the heavy homo eroticism of the volleyball scene.

Adam Wetstein

I didn’t mean straight get as opposed to tgay but as opposed to satire

James Whalen

I still prefer Behind Enemy Lines over Top Gun as far as "fighting aviation" movies.

lespea

Probably my favorite of those types of movies; absolutely hysterical.

Top Gun: Maverick is a worthy sequel. Saw it last night. It’s one of the rare films that doesn’t necessitate knowledge of the original to be enjoyable. Indeed, it might be better than the original. So much of what a summer blockbuster should be. I can’t wait till you guys react to that one.
