Going through your backlog of reactions. I didn't have George falling in love with Tom Cruise on my bingo card, but I'm here for it...

UncleGaGa1979

If no one has mentioned it, y’all have to watch the SNL sketch called Top Gun Auditions. You can find it on youtube or on SNL on Peacock. It’s from the first episode of the 37th season with host Alec Baldwin.

Mario

Ah...nice. The good old 80's. Amazing decade with great movies...This is one of them. :-) Looking forward for this one.

Chris Davies

This is still one of the best movies ever made

Elvenwitch

I was a crew chief for F-15s in the USAF, and this movie was part of our final for our basic mechanics section. There are three errors in the jargon and or mechanics in this movie that we had to find. I remember two of them, but I am looking forward to seeing if I can catch or remember the third during this rewatch. Edit: To answer your question, fighter jets measure their fuel by the thousand pounds. And I don't know an exact consumption rate, but I do know that an F-15 with three external tanks (giant bomb looking things) can burn all its fuel in an hour or two of high-speed flight or about eight and a half hours if they are forced to fly as slow as possible.

Luis Torrefranca

So, any recommendations on who might be able to build me a hotrod?

Adam Barry

George: "We know that it's an Air Force movie.." Well, actually...

Luis Torrefranca

"Why are their masks off?" "They paid good money to see their pretty faces." ... pretty much. I believe masks are supposed to stay on.

Luis Torrefranca

"Can they actually do that?" Not that close. For one, their vertical stabilizers (fins) would get in the way.

Marko T.

Suggestion: War of the Worlds (2005). Its directed by Steven Spielberg and stars Tom Cruise.

The Inedible Mattman!

This was filmed during the American Cold War with Russia. So the enemies are supposed to be Russian. I'm not sure why they don't actually call them Russian, but if I remember correctly the term "MiG" used for the enemy planes is a term used to identify Russian fighter jets.

The Maestro

I wonder if there are any edits of this film where they just play the sex music during the scenes with Tom Cruise and Goose or Iceman

RocktSurgeon

Paired with "waiting for everyone to say I know nothing about the military"... Yep, perfect start :p And to be clear, totally normal not to know much of anything about it. Just a fun couple of comments to be so close together!

Githerax

Tom's first movie with Nichole Kidman was 'Far and Away', super-sappy romance-novel movie. Tom's second movie with Nichole Kidman was his car-racing one, 'Days of Thunder', and his third was *cough* *choke* sorry I swallowed my own tongue. What was I talking about? Yes, George, 'Top Gun' was developed in cooperation with the US DOD as a propaganda piece to make desperate children feel like they could have a good time and be something great by joining the military.

Jon Johns

George! Give yourself a break for not knowing much about the U.S. military. I believe the F-14 'Tomcat' was 'retired' in 2006, replaced by the F/A 18 'Hornet. (F/A = 'Fighter' 'Attack' meaning it can fight other aircraft as well as ground targets... The Tomcat was strictly an air-to-air fighter, AFAIK.) Fun Fact, the US Air Force still flies versions of the B-52 strategic Bomber, whose first flight was in 1952! Some aircraft see decades of service.

Githerax

Ok George, so re: Tom Cruise movies, here's the deal. First, Mission Impossible 2 is the 'weakest' of the series, but not trash. The series is considered to get *stronger* as it goes, so deal with that. You must watch 1, and should watch 4-6. Other Tom Cruise must-watches (I said *must*): - Edge of Tomorrow (2014) Sci-fi/Action - Top-honored by the Saturn Awards (for sci-fi related media) - Minority Report (2002) Mystery/Thriller - another Philip K Dick story - 11 Saturn nominations, 3 wins - Rain Man (1988) Drama - w/ Dustin Hoffman, 8 Oscar noms, 4 wins incl. Best Picture, Director, Actor (Hoffman) and Screenplay - Born on the Fourth of July (1990) War - 8 Oscar noms incl. Best Actor for Cruise, 2 wins Director (Oliver Stone) and Editing - A Few Good Men (1992) - Drama - 4 Oscar noms incl Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor (Jack Nicholson) - Interview with the Vampire (1994) - Fantasy/Horror - 7 Saturn noms incl. Director and Actor for all three leads. - Tropic Thunder (2008) - Comedy/War - a tour-de-force, a heartbreaking work of staggering genius. These are all sixth sick sheep approved. Wink.

Michael_AP

For Tom Cruise movies you definitely have to do: * Edge of tomorrow (2014) * Rain man (1988) * A few good men (1992) 3 wery different movies.

Einherj

I think a big irony with the movie is that since it was produced with the US Navy, they made significant changes to the script to take out profanity and make it more pro military and "cool", but there still ended up being a lot of homoerotic subtext. Intentional or not, all that makes the movie so much better. Also, this movie has the best soundtrack ever.

The Guy on the Couch

LoL George. The homoerotic vibes in this movie is real. The hilarious thing is that as a kid ( I grew up in the 80's) i never saw that, it wasnt until I older watching as an adult that could see it. I was totally blown away with how many homoerotic shower scenes there were in this movie alone. As kid I thought it was a super cool action dude fighter plane movie and as adult it was like "wow this is kinda gay porn with no sex scenes". I get that all the sweaty scenes were for the ladies of the 80's but it is clear that could easily be seen as borderline softcore porn for a gay guy

Torsten Maekler

Though this might not tell you anything, but here goes: The F-14 (the plane used in this movie) was the navy fighter/interceptor of that time for the US. It was later replaced by the F/A-18. But they used the F-14 for quite some time in the US Navy. The F/A-18s are in the process of being replaced by the newer generation of stealth fighters now. The F-14 just was a remarkable plane due to it's unique way of being able to fold its wings backwards for different aerodynamics, depending on how fast you wanted to fly that plane. For filming they used a mix of real fighter footage, shot for this film (with real pilots) as well as doing miniature photography. And as you said, with massive support by the military. Otherwise those shots wouldn't have been possible back in those days. Today everything can be done with CGI; though they shot a lot of the new stuff for Maverick for real. With Tom Cruise IN the cockpit. It will be marvelous... . PS: But there is one US plane out there, which is the one and only, the best of the best, and the one, you want to have at your support. And that is the A-10 Warthog. Best plane ever :-)

Adam Barry

It's both cute and frustrating that this younger generation doesn't realise the enemy was the Soviet Union, and the tension that existed during the Cold War. Should follow this up with Firefox.

The Guy on the Couch

I think that the baddies were possibly Iranian or another middle eastern country as many middle eastern countries got Russian military hardware and it would make sense as the carrier was in the Indian Ocean. Plus during the 80's there was an incident between the Navy and the Libya where we shot down their fighters in 1981.

Jack Burton

Bidet, His breakout role, like the others in the movie, was The Outsiders, which landed him Risky Business, which in turn made people love him. Cruise is one of the most prolific movie stars that ever lived. His Filmography is unparalleled, imo. I think the guy has personal stuff I might not be a huge fan of but if you know the movies and look at his filmography, it's absolutely bonkers the amount of good movies he's been in... and his range isn't something talked about but The Outsiders, Risky Business, A Few Good Men, Vanilla Sky, Magnolia, MI series, Top Gun, Rain Man, The Firm, Born on the Fourth of July, Cocktail, Legend, All the Right Moves, The Color of Money... it just keeps going. The guy is simply prolific and he's been a movie star for 40 years now. It's nutso bonkers crazy. :)

Einherj

Talking about Meg Ryan, you should watch Joe Versus the Volcano (1990).

Alan Kobb

Tom Cruise's breakout role is a 1983 comedy called Risky Business in which a high school student uses the opportunity of his parent's vacation to turn their house into a brothel. That made him famous, but then he had back-to-back-to-back major roles in multiple excellent movies that really cemented him as a major star: Top Gun and the Color of Money in 1986, Rain Man (88) and Born on the Fourth of July (89). In most of those movies he played a n action-loving "hot shot", so you start to see the type-casting that he has had his entire career. Then again, when you get paid the money that he gets, maybe it's not so-much type-casting as marketing. By the way, he was 24 in 1986. THen you mentioned Meg Ryan. Small role here. After several years in soap operas, this was her fiirst role in a major film, and it was very noticed, because after Top Gun she started to get big roles also, with When Harry Met Sally coming just 3 years later. Jerry Bruckheimer produced Flashdance, Top Gun, The Rock, Crimson Tide, Con Air, Armageddon, Enemy of the State, Black Hawk Down, Pearl Harbor, and the Beverly Hills Cop, Bad Boys, Pirates of the Caribbean, and National Treasure franchises, so it's not surprising that you've heard of him. As for Kelly McGillis, she was very hot after this movie, but she didn't get the good roles. I hear that she has not been invited to be in the new Top Gun. You are correct. The masks are off because you really can't see them talking otherwise. It doesn't work on screen....Then again there are the pretty faces. 1986 was the Cold War. The US and USSR were not at war, but not at peace either. Call them adversaries.

Erich Bomke

I wouldn't call it type casting when you insist on doing action roles because you enjoy doing your own stunts. But also I would say outside of Mission Impossible, most people would think of drama or comedy films when thinking of Cruise. Most would think Jerry McGuire, A Few Good Men, Cocktails, Eye Wide Shut. (this is me saying in a long about way that he isn't type cast at all). And then you have Tropic Thunder.

Alan Kobb

Why were the stakes so high? In the 1980s, if a US Navy ship were to stray into Soviet waters and become disabled, they absolutely would want to capture the ship. They would want to look very closely at the ship and look at he logs and any intelligence that it had as well as the technology on-board. They would be willing to shoot at a few US F-14s in the process. Of course the same went for a Russian ship that was in US territory.

Monica Alarcon

Never wanted to see this movie but I'll give it a try just so I can finally get all those Hot Shots refferences...

Monica Alarcon

BTW, you should watch Hot Shots IMMEDIATLY... and to get the full Top Gun experience you should try (and fail) to land the plane on the NES game...

AC10

What a pleasant surprise. My favorite intro so far?? Maybe. New Patreon goal... Rent a Movie Theater. Lets make this happen people!

Githerax

I just googled it, AMC rents an auditorium in Canada for $99-$330, but you have to watch from their set of movies, from what I see.

TuvixLogic

I could tell you more about your questions but I'm sure there will be a more informed person on yt. I'm also a patreon of PIB Cassie and no it was not a lot to rent a theater, at the time my local theatre was advertising it for 99.$

Haye Zeus

The only reason I’m excited for them seeing this movie is that they may get to see Hot Shots

David Crabtree

Great reaction! I love love love this movie! It's definitely one of my top military films, and just a great film in general. It's also on my list of Patriotic films I watch every 4th of July season. I knew as a kid I was going to be a Marine, and while I didn't pursue being a pilot, I did work in aviation electronics while I was enlisted. I have this whole film's soundtrack on my Spotify. Such a golden era for movies. Now... you have to watch HOT SHOTS!

David Crabtree

A must see Tom Cruise movie is A Few Good Men! Also.. Jerry Maguire, Edge of Tomorrow, Interview With a Vampire

Saifu

Blade Runner 2049 soon?

Theoshin

One of my Favorite(maybe underrated) Tom Cruise movies is Cocktail.

JayF

There are a crap ton of good Tom Cruise movies out there. In no particular order - The Outsiders (has a ton of young stars in it) Risky Business Rain Man A Few Good Men Interview with the Vampire Mission Impossible franchise Minority Report Tropic Thunder (not a main character but one of his best roles) Edge of Tomorrow

Torsten Maekler

Talking about Meg Ryan, when is Simone showing George "You've got mail"? Come on, George, I dare you :-)

Jack Urmson

Tom Cruise did not make a lot of action movies early in his career. Most of his work through even Last Samurai are more character driven dramas. Almost all of his movies are entertaining to some degree, but some standout better than others. Ones to put on the list: A Few Good Men Risky Business Rain Man Jerry Maguire Born on the Fourth of July The Firm The Color of Money Days of Thunder Eyes Wide Shut Magnolia Edge of Tomorrow Tropic Thunder Minority Report American Made Valkyrie Vanilla Sky This isn’t even mentioning the Mission Impossible franchise that gets better with each movie. The second Mission film probably the weakest of the series, but has some killer stunts in it.

Torsten Maekler

Edge of Tomorrow also has Bill Paxton in it. Double watch :-)

William

I think Simone has fallen in love with Tom Cruise :) Great reaction video. I haven't seen this film for 20+ years, I really enjoyed watching this film along with you guys. (perhaps I have fallen in love with Tom Cruise) lol

Jim Frykman

Best Tom Cruise movie is Magnolia

Logan Kerlee

I've seen this movie so many times. Each and every time I'm in tears when Goose bites it. I love this movie quite a bit. I first watched this when I was a youngster, I remember playing the original's game on NES. That game was SO MUCH FUN! Also, incredibly difficult to land jets on. xD Difficult to the point of not including it when playing multiplayer. This movie definitely hits hard emotionally when Goose dies. Maverick feels immense guilt but even Goose's wife knows that he isn't responsible for his death. Maverick wasn't careless or carefree with his flying throughout the film, what happened was just awful and plain terrible. Hell, even Iceman or Val Kilmer showed respect toward him after Goose's death. When I watched this as a kid it affected me but not nearly as strong as it does now. The combat scene toward the end was definitely difficult to watch but I felt and feel that it's only to make how chaotic and difficult aerial combat really is. It wasn't nearly as stomach turning as it would be in real life I think. lmao! The homo eroticism in this film is quite strong. It's fucking awesome though, I feel. lol, only thing that was missing to top that off was some music from Queen. Though, the soundtrack for this movie is perfect, I feel. I first watched this when I was probably 8 years old, maybe a year or so before. Whenever I hear one of the songs that's featured in this, this movie comes to mind. Good vibes! <3 Thanks for finally watching this! :)

Chris Lüders

Well, now you're very well prepared for 'Hot shots!' (1991). 😊 But then before you watch 'Hot shots! Part deux' (1993) you should consider watching a few more movies to get all the references. Btw. a few of these movies are perfect for Cinecringe, e.g. Kickboxer (1987), Fire Birds (1990), even Rambo II and III are at least questionable. 🤣🤣🤣

Chase Schleich

The fact that we never got a Tom Cruise/Val Kilmer love scene is a tragedy. Two bitter rivals, but when Goose dies, Iceman comes to comfort Maverick and next thing you know....

Chase Schleich

They're still a year or two away from being able to watch Hot Shots!. They were on a roll with the Arnold/Stallone films there for a bit, but there's still a lot they need to watch before they could truly appreciate all the references in Hot Shots!.

Ry Jo

1986... cold war ... though not directly engaged... in Korea and Vietnam there are rumors that Russia and China both supplied pilots and aircraft against the US.... but they also had to be quiet about it. we knew it, they knew the stuff we did , etc etc everybody was just worried about getting into a hot war with nukes... lots of times both sides back off cause if it "really" happened it be WW3.

Ry Jo

also google quentin tarantino and topgun he has a theory that is interesting

Ry Jo

days of thunder is cool i like it. it is fun. the first mission impossible is awesome, it's close to the "spy" stuff the others are action movies I like them but the 1st is a decent "SPY" movie the others are action movies .... watch "taken " with Liam lol

Ry Jo

taken is a action movie but I like it better than most of the MI movies, ppl will say the bourne movies... again I consider them action movies not spy movies... for spy movies... "tinker tailor soldier spy" (the movie... I have not seen the TV show but hear it is good) , " the spy who came in from the cold" with Richard Burton (old movie) , "the most wanted man" is good, they are less action and more plot.

Ry Jo

also I was thinking.... it might be fun to do a "B" sci-fi / horror/ fantasy run.... some movies to consider are... 1) Lady hawk 2) beast master 3) free jack 4) split second 5) cross worlds 6) leviathan 7) red Sonya 8) lawn mower man for a fun movie run I say 1) jumping jack flash 2) short circuit 3) Harry and the Henderson's 4) Turner and Hooch 5) Ghost ... and Tremors 1 & 2 (the rest I would not recommend )

Jim Johnson

Please do all of the Mission Impossible movies. They only get better as they go.

Zach Willett

Check out YouTuber Legal Eagles video on how many laws did Maverick break in Top Gun. Very insightful into military laws.

Chase Lonnergan

To answer your question about the family, they usually receive lifetime medical benefits and a half-a-million-dollar insurance payout.

Chase Lonnergan

One more answer. The reason the stakes are so high is that it's the Cold War. If that engagement had "officially" happened, or if the Soviets had sunk that ship (that was the country of origin of the enemy MiGs) it would have led to WWIII and full on nuclear conflict.
