Lovely! The TV series is just as good if you haven't watched.

In terms of how true the story is, the characters were basically made up. The dialogue is completely fictional. The events are mostly untrue (they draw a few small elements from two seperate events).

Can’t wait till you guys react to ‘Snatch’, a Guy Ritchie classic and one of the most quotable movies ever 👍

Mike Dispo

"Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter" is a film about a lonely Japanese girl who watches a VHS of "Fargo", thinks it's a true story, and travels to Minnesota to look for the money Steve Buscemi buried. Amazing performance by Rinko Kikuchi (of "Pacific Rim" fame). Based on an urban legend about a real Japanese girl who traveled to Minnesota in the early 00's.

Frances McDormand is an absolute treasure. Her screen debut was in the Coen brothers very first movie, Blood Simple (which is a great little flick, btw)

posted this over on youtube too but: the "true story" bit is a joke that has proved extreme prescient by the coens. the late 80s/early 90s were when the appetite for reality tv and true crime stories really started taking off in america. it had been a fascination since the early part of the 20th century, but suddenly you got a ton of tabloid tv shows like cops, a current affair, hard copy, america's most wanted, etc, and a ton of "ripped from the headlines" tv movies, all of which were based around the seemingly huge desire to hear about people committing crimes/see them being punished for them. the coens were poking fun at that growing trend, which of course has only gotten bigger and bigger over the past 25 years.

One of the best Coen brothers films. The incongruity in the film and television series with the severity of the crime and the folks involved in it are where the humor comes from. I love that they made a pregnant sheriff the heroine is a stroke of genius. I could watch this movie any time.

minnesots accents and shot in south sask.

"Fargo is...a...noise." Yes, Simone, I too am sometimes compelled to answer questions to which the correct answer is completely unknown to me. I link it to my only-child syndrome. Also, your reactions may not be accurately described as 'vaginal', but they are always hysterical. Get it? Hysterical? Heh. Really ties the jokes together. Ties together? get it? Wow. Explanation in the reply.

Githerax

So 'vaginal' obviously- but also the word 'hysterical' comes from the Greek word 'hyster', 'of the womb', so it's another feature of female anatomy. And 'ties together' was a context-sensitive reference to tubal ligation the 'tying' of the fallopian tubes. So it ended up working in a bunch of female anatomy references. Explanation ova. And one more! Zing.

Love the epic one two Guy Ritchie managed to accomplish with Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, two of the best films ever made.

Tony Owens

A great movie thats a dark comedy I think you two would like is Raising Arizona staring Nicolas Cage and Holly Hunter!

Michael

There’s actually a film called “Kumiko the Treasure Hunter” and the premise is that a Japanese woman believes Fargo was actually based on a true story so she searches for the missing case of money.

Dooly

It actually did happen; though I think the whole thing about her believing the money was actually there had been debunked.

And now please Fargo the TV Show :) An absolute masterpiece! Also an anthology series (each season is its own individual story with its own individual cast) similar to True Detective (only better) and very much in the spirit of this movie.

Jamie Walton

You MUST watch S1 of the Fargo TV series. It’s brilliant. You could make it a Patreon bonus.

Yea the Fargo tv show is awesome. It's quite incredible how it has almost the same vibe as the film, it also continues some small things from the film.
