Firefly Episode 8 & 9 - Patreon Version

Adam

Out of Gas is my favorite episode. Possibly of all of television.

I think every single piece of visual media ever made gets vacuum wrong in the same ways so what can you do except try and spread the facts. First, it's not cold, though Firefly is pretty good about that. At no point does someone freeze to the point of shattering at the first touch of space. Temperature is a property of matter, the opposite of vacuum; space is such a good insulator that any need to "reduce" heat should be a big problem for a spaceship. And second, the difference between one atmosphere and zero atmospheres of pressure is about what you can feel if you dive under water to a depth of three meters. Air would be squeezed out of an open door with a force of roughly 300 grams per square centimeters (and gradually less as more air escapes your spaceship), so yes, hardly enough to send any furniture flying. Vacuum is strong enough to rupture your lungs if you try to hold your breath, though. Pro tip if you happen to find yourself floating in space with no spacesuit: Relax your chest and let the air escape. Then you have probably about ten seconds of consciousness to try and launch yourself at the nearest airlock or whatever may help you.

George noticed the name before but it's a really subtle detail that's easy to miss: remember earlier in the show when River had a panic attack and started ripping the labels off of the cans? Those cans all had the Blue Sun logo on them. Jayne was wearing a Blue Sun shirt when River slashed at him.

Out of Gas is maybe my fave episode of the series! ♥

After how ever many watch throughs of this show I've gone through, I keep coming to the conclusion that Out of Gas is my favorite episode of the regular series due to all the flashbacks and insights. I don't like the easy resolution of them getting back in time as it feels very plot-armored unlike much of the show, but the immediate transition to the final flashback where you have the reveal with Mal coming across Serenity for the first time more than makes up for that.

-Happy Browncoat Noises- Yay!

A Red Mage Named Blue

Out of Gas is a lot of people's favourite, but for me it's Ariel. Something about seeing Simon taking charge and planning everything, finally seeing Jayne's betrayal, but then seeing Jayne's heel realisation and choose to go back on himself because he finally sees Simon as a person who's been through a lot, not some fancy toff who's never struggled

There's a storm outside my house right now and when the lights dimmed at the beginning of "Out of Gas" my lights flickered at the same time. Was kinda creepy.

Onno Smits

Ariel is my favourite episode. So many great character moments. No matter how many times I rewatch this show, it just stays so gorram good!

Torsten Maekler

I think these two episodes and the two upcoming are the story and character peak of this series. Man, so good... . So, what are your plans with the last episode? There are only 5 left, an uneven number. You gonna watch the movie together with the last episode then? (That would be awesome) :-)

William

When River was saying "2 by 2, hands of blue" she was referering to the two creepy guys wearing blue gloves

Deserana12

Please please please do this! If you had time for a 3 hour Batman film, this should be no problem :p

Two of my favourite episodes, Out of Gas is one I think about a lot, and I look forward to it on rewatches. Hearing about what they did to River's brain is chilling too, something about saying how the amygdala was "stripped" is just horrifying.

Texas Anla'Shok

"Out of Gas" has the most cinematic feel to it in my opinion, the camera work the storytelling, the transitions from one time period to another. Not even the actual movie is shot like this.

Luis Torrefranca

I think this is my favorite episode. Also, as much as I wanted for the Expanse to win, I'm glad you're reacting to Firefly. Also looking forward to your Expanse reactions someday.

Torsten Maekler

If they love this show, I can't imagine what will happen to them, when they watch 'Expanse'. Hope they'll watch it next :-) Beltalowda sasa ke!

Luis Torrefranca

"Don't tell the others what I did." And that there is what saved his life. He's capable of caring about where he stands with the crew.

I remember "Out of gas" being my favorite episode. It starts with a grim unknown situation. Then it brilliantly introduces back stories of whole crew and the end is also very heartwarming. Also, i am not from the binge watching generation and rarely watch tv series, i don't have a habit of thinking that main char cannot be killed or anything. I think some people lose a bit of charm of just watching the movie without keeping in mind all the current standards and tropes of movie making. I was worrying for Mal the whole time.

Lou Gallucci

They call you the gangster of love George.

I think you're misremembering the "air escaping from spaceship" fact. The air escapes at (just under) the speed of sound. Which makes sense, if you consider how quickly air wants to get out of a tire when you let it. I think the surprising thing is how little force the escaping air will place on a person. If he's far from the vent, then he will feel almost zero force. If he's closer to the place of venting, he will get more force applied, but this will be done very quickly, and you don't actually fight the hurricane winds for a minute like the TV/Movie trope suggests. Just hold on for that brief decompression and you're safe. I mean, if you're in a spacesuit. You may be thinking of the other science thought experiment I've seen where they talk about opening up like a 2m wormhole from the earth's surface into space, and doing the math for such a large cross sectional area means that the resulting "wind" near the portal would be far less than people would think. Meaning you might could resist it at fairly close distances just from gravity/friction.

George : "This firmly establishes the crew's loyalty." Next episode : "Ariel"

gobmob2000

You two should also watch Castle, which also has Nathan Fillion as a lead role.

Jayne kind of reminds me of Jenny in Forrest Gump. He's self-destructive. You look at everything that he's done, and it's failed and bit him in the ass, kind of like Jenny. Look at Jaynestown, Ariel, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if Jayne had an abusive parent just like Jenny, and was taught by his parent, like Jenny, that he is worthless. In Out of Gas, when he left Mal to go to the shuttle he had a look on his face like he was losing a father. In Serenity (1st episode), he is hanging just outside the sickbay the entire time during Kaylee's surgery. He loves the ship and his shipmates, but like Jenny, he does not feel that he deserves such good people, so he sabotages his relationships.

Ali Williams

These Firefly reactions are really helpful. You guys are putting out great content. The work is really appreciated.

I was watching 'Moon Knight' and I'm impressed. I bought the original 'Moon Knight' series of comics back in 1980, but never liked it very much as a child. They really did a much better job with the character in the TV series, and it's a decent show to boot. I nominate 'Moon Knight' for the next TV poll. George will enjoy the mythology.

Drew Acheson

I can't wait for you two to get to Serenity!

Githerax

Oh, you talked over the funny line: Malcolm: "Which one you figure tracked us?" Zoe (looking at Jayne): "The ugly one." Malcolm: "Can you be more specific?" Also, what the heck was that Ultra-Canuck joke you two shared right at the end of ep. 8? It hit me so hard I got dizzy and could taste maple syrup in my mouth, came to about 20 minutes later.

Gary Fixler

Been waiting for the reaction to the lady at the reception desk in the hospital since you started this series. That's stuck with me for 20 years :-D

Jim Frykman

This was the first time I caught the line "Stealing from the rich, selling to the poor". They really outdid themselves on the tight dialogue on this show!

JokerDanny

please react to Gotham or put Gotham in future tv polls

Githerax

Simone singing the song about how much she loves Firefly is so sad :D Welcome to the club.

EMB

Next you're gonna tell me George doesn't know the game Cornhole xD

EMB

My only complaint with your reactions to firefly so far is that I wish you'd do it quicker. Though given how little of the show had the chance to be made, I guess spacing it out is worth it. Oh, almost forgot. Mal often talks about the ship Serenity, and in "Out of Gas" he said he's not leaving Serenity. It's important to remember that the battle at the beginning of the show was The Battle of Serenity Valley. That battle marked essentially the end of the war for independence that Mal was fighting. In his way, he keeps reminding the audience that he hasn't left the war or that battle. Given how spaced out your reactions are, it's easy for deatils to slip, just figured I'd remind y'all.

David King

also, a fun detail of out of gas...Kailee mentions the catalyser going bad and needing replaced I think in episode 3

Chris Lüders

By the way, I just thought about a new series after Firefly and I would recommend to react to 'Lucifer' (2016-2021). It's a very good and funny series and I think it's absolutely not what you expect. 😈

Topher White (The Elder)

The broken part from Out of Gas made it on the set dressing of Nathan Fillion's apartment on Castle.

Marko T.

Prison Break season 1.

Thomas Yanez

There are actually multiple references to the compression coil (of which the catylzer is a part) needing replacement going back to the pilot episode.

Sean Murphy

That part Wash threw at the ship hull like it's junk is what they needed so bad in the Out of Gas episode. And who has never heard of playing horse shoes? I'm curious about his history now.

8bitAndy

Out of Gas might be the greatest 43 minutes of television I've seen and I'm so glad you guys enjoyed it. Rewatching this show with you both has been so much fun! Can't wait for what's next!

Jobbe Smit

IIRC he was born in Hong Kong before his family moved to China later in life. Hence he hasn't seen a lot of Western movies.
