My wife is a lawyer (though not in litigation) and she attended court with a colleague and a judge told a female attorney who was wearing a pantsuit that he expected her to wear a skirt in court next time she appears, so yeah they can be that strict for who knows what reason.

Ricardo Alanis

Oh and the actor that plays the judge also played Herman Munster in The Munsters.

Odd Thomas

Never had the urge to watch this in 30 years. I stand by that decision.

Rasmus Kristensen

Marisa Tomey won an Academy award for this role.

This movie is shown in law school classrooms, as goofy as it is, and as absurd as the catalyst series of misunderstandings is. Here's a neat little article about how much it can teach young attorneys about trials: "Every Young Trial Lawyer Needs To Watch My Cousin Vinny | Litigation & Trial" https://www.litigationandtrial.com/2012/03/articles/series/special-comment/my-cousin-vinny/ 2 key quotes about the movie: "After Vinny’s girlfriend Mona Lisa bails him out for a second time after having been found in contempt, she criticizes his performance in court and tells him it is pretty clear he does not know what he is doing.  She then utters one of my favorite lines in the movie: “Don’t they teach you that in law school?”  Vinny’s response is just as classic: “NO!  They teach you Contracts…!  Obviously, the implication is that in law school they teach “law” not “how to practice law”. … Vinny is terrible at the things we do teach in law school, but very good at the things we don’t." And from the director: "[T]here aren’t any bad guys in the film.  Most films seem to have a corrupt judge or a corrupt prosecutor or there’s somebody who’s a bad guy.  There are no bad guys in Vinny.  . . . [W]e think that a film has to have, in film jargon, a protagonist and an antagonist – the antagonist being the bad guy.  It’s a fact that it would be possible for someone to be convicted of a capital crime when they’re not guilty.  But the judge is not corrupt.  He’s very correct and a little straight-laced, but he’s not a bad guy.  He’s fair.  The prosecutor is more than fair.  Nobody’s doing anything wrong."

BTW, if you want to see Samuel L. Jackson look uncool, watch Black Snake Moan or Django Unchained. He really is a terrific actor.

I love this movie. It’s one of the few comedies where all the jokes and bits still land even after fifty or sixty viewings. Lol I still quote this movie a lot, especially when I’m with friends and we’re going to a restaurant we’ve never been before to. “Breakfast?” “You think?” Lol

David Sumner

Best legal comedy ever? Roadhouse!

Rob Parry

Not a comedy but A Few Good Men from 1992 is a really good courtroom drama that you guys would probably enjoy

David Crabtree

Fun reaction! This is one of my favorite movies! I think the writing and performances are top notch. Just great comedy. It's actually considered by my lawyers and legal experts to be one of, if not the most legally accurate courtroom film in terms of procedure. Also, the fantastic Marisa Tomei won an Academy Award for her role in this movie. And let's not forget the Karate Kid himself, Ralph Macchio as one of the defendants!

michael clarke

have you guys not seen pet cemetery? the judge in this movie is famous for his roll in that movie. one of the most quotable lines ever. hes also herman munster.

michael clarke

marissa tomei won for best supporting actress for this movie.

James Whalen

You guys need to watch the Lethal Weapon movies, Joe Pesci plays probably his only non-sketchy character in that franchise, his character is introduced in the second film in the series.

John Pavlich

If you want to see a movie starring Joe Pesci, with zero gangster attitude watch With Honors. Also starring Brendan Fraser.

One thing I think is great about this movie - and particularly the script - is that while it's quite broad-brush and contrived in the beginning (as George points out - though being a comedy, that's expected), it paints the picture of Vinny's backstory quite subtly - it's implied that he was in and out of trouble a lot when he was younger, but having appeared in front of Judge Molloy, the judge saw something about him in court that suggested that he could actually make a go of law school and keep out of trouble that way. The rest of the script (and it takes both Tomei and Pesci to sell it as well as they do) shows that Vinny (and Lisa, for that matter) are *really good at arguing* all the way down to the fine details - and once you strip away the educational and ceremonial aspects, being good at arguing is the fundamental essence of what makes a successful lawyer.

A Few Good Men was written Aaron Sorkin who is an amazing writer. Definitely check out his other movies. My favorites are The American President, Moneyball, and Molly's Game. A couple more popular ones are The Social Network and Steve Jobs. I also love his TV show Newsroom.

Didn't think Joe Pesci and Marisa Tomei would be a good combo, was pleasantly surprised. Hilarious film. Also totally understand what George means with Joe Pesci having a sleazy vibe haha.

Chad L.

Marisa Tomei Academy award for this movie!

stephen phillips

the guy that was in independence day that you notice is also in a movie "Scent of A Woman" 1992 amazing film and phonemical performance from Al Pacino. really insist you guys check it out. very emotional moving film.

Jean-Dominic Lapointe

If you enjoyed the movie, I suggest going over to see Legal Eagle’s analysis of the movie (https://youtu.be/a1I7QBCHqng). I learned a lot and surprisingly, this movie is pretty accurate, legally speaking.

Ken Myers

As a lawyer, the initial meeting w/ Pesci & judge is not realistic. To practice law in a state where he did not pass the bar, Pesci would need a local lawyer to sponsor him and file papers to get admitted pro hac vice. It's all pretty standard, but it would not be handled with an informal meeting between lawyer & judge.

Ken Myers

"I hate it when characters have every reason to say the thing, but don't, just to prolong the conflict artificially..." This is why I could not keep watching the Lost in Space series past a few episodes, it just got SOOOO bad with this. On the other hand, Umbrella Academy also does this a lot, and I find it annoying, but I still find the characters and show interesting enough to put up with it.

Aussiefeld

Oscar (1991) staring Sylvester Stallone and with Marissa Tomei... You said you wanted to see all her films.... This is a fun one....

Randy Hammill

Great film. You also need to get back to the Lethal Weapon series…with Joe Pesci
