I feel like Tropic Thunder was mocking films like this tbh

olly.enn

Tropic Thunder obviously mocks Platoon in the Ben Stiller flailing towards the copper scene. Don't think they would directly mock this one tough, since it's considered to a be pretty accurate portrayal of a real event. There is more than enough corny cheesy war movie trash out there! :D

Who's Custer... He's referring to Brigadier General George Armstrong Custer who was defeated at the famous battle of Little Bighorn when he was the commanding officer of the 7th U.S. Cavalry Regiment. It's known as "Custer's Last Stand". Is that how bullets look like... Nope. Not "normal" bullets. You can't see those. The glowing bullets are tracer ammunition. They have a chemical compound in the back that ignites when they are fired. Then you can see their trajectory. It's mostly used in machine guns where you put tracer rounds in between the normal rounds. Maybe one tracer round for every 5 rounds or so.

Great view that George expresses about the VC with the glasses that charged Moore. It would have made a great difference, if they had let the VC been killed/overmanned by someone else just before reaching Moore, and he just stood there chocked at how close that was. Shown that he is not a "superman" but an ordinary soldier and could easily have been killed right there.

The Vietnam war is a self-inflicted wound on the American (my) country. It was my dad's generation, and I'm so glad that he didn't meet the criteria for the draft. I was born in 1969, so I have no recollection of the war itself, but I grew up in the shadow of it's aftermath, as well as the counter culture it gave birth to. One part of being American, is apologizing to the rest of the world for the needless casualties we have caused, to foreign countries, cultures, their people, and our own. The other part is having empathy for all the women and men who, often with ignorance, charged forth under the guise of patriotism, for a government and politicians who used their lives for political gain, as well as their dead bodies. I have no blanket or default patriotism, but a huge amount skepticism for those who would raise our flag in the name of anything other than compassionate response to those too helpless to defend themselves against regimes who would squelsh their human rights. That has definitely NOT been the standard for anything we have done since WW2. Still, I have all the empathy for our women and men who have been lost and/or permanently damaged by the wars we wage. I can't help but to feel immense sadness of 58,220 Americans lost in this war. I spent my whole life living among veterans, sprinkled into every facet of my life in the area I live. Men wearing the hats and jackets of their regiments, companies, and platoons, dining at the table next to you, drinking a beer on the stool next to you. I am a veteran myself. In America, we have fought so much, and lost so many, that you see and feel the pain on every face you see, from generations before and after my own. It's just a sad fact of life. I feel this movie deeply, as it tells a story that America tried to hide from itself, and in the process, hurt itself even further. Thanks for watching this. I know there is a lot of chest-thumping that comes from here, but we're definitely not all that way, and those who espouse blind patriotism, have been made that way by a toxic culture, centuries deep.

Maybe I’m in no position to have an opinion on this one, because I’m not American but german and so I maybe have a different kind of sensibility when it comes to matters such as this, but I think that a.) it’s a well-crafted movie and b.) the patriotism shown in this movie combined with the absence of any background regarding the conflict in Vietnam sis something that I see as a massive flaw of this film. The same argument goes for many war movies. So maybe It’s time, after watching this very heroic (and just maybe overly one-sided) battle painting, to watch an anti-war movie. My recommendation would be the crown jewel of this genre: Apocalypse Now. Best regards from Germany to Canada, Chris

I had to rewind to see what happened to the funny intro. I guess it's not appropriate here.

Broken Arrow is the code for a accidental event that involves nuclear weapons,. When a nuke is lost or stolen, or launched by accident and it does not involve the nuclear bomb going off is consider Broken Arrow. Yes, lost nuclear bombs do happen, in fact there are several of them in the swamps.

13 Hours, I'm telling you. It's got great tension, takes the subject seriously, which is even more amazing when you find out who the director is. I've also personally met one of the men in the actual situation.

For the Halloween season could you please watch Silent Hill from 2006. It is my favorite horror movie of all time and it actually has a lot of emotion and feeling in it so I think you might like it in a strange way. Thank you for your reactions, they mean a lot. My birthday is October 22nd and I have been wanting to see someone react to this film online for along time and almost NO ONE has done a watch-along reaction to this film. I would just truly deeply appreciate it.

Broken Arrow, as one commenter said, refers to an emergency event involving nuclear weapons. However, it also can be used as a radio code to indicate that a unit is utterly and completely overrun, requesting any and all available support units within range. Basically, it's saying "everything is absolutely screwed and we need help from anyone who can provide it" As for the "no hiding it now" thing, they're saying that the situation is too dire for them to be able to pretend it's a victory, or spin it as one. Essentially, the broken arrow thing means the unit is so screwed that you just have to admit a high casualty event.

Brian Hakala

One of my favorite war movies, but I agree i wish they had more from the perspective of the Vietnamese. Those moments greatly added to the film.

Clint Eastwood directed 2 movies about the Battle of Iwo Jima, one from the American side and one from the Japanese; that'd be a great pair to watch if you want to see multiple persoectives of a battle. They're Flags of Our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima

Tinfoilnation

Although it goes by quickly, the young soldier's bayonet charge was foreshadowed in the beginning of the film. The general directing the Viet Cong troops in the battle with Moore is one of the young officers you see leading that attack against the French. He is also the one that conducts the bayonet charge against the French officer to finish (and win) that battle. It was all about "Not This Time" with Moore - he did not want a repeat of the French massacre let alone Custer's.

Dave Jones

You guys said you’d love to watch a film showing both sides of a battle… this has been done by Clint Eastwood in his 2 directed movies ‘ Flags of Our Fathers ‘ and the second film from Japanese prospective ‘ letters from Iwo Jima’

The sleeping with your tags thing, is actually a real thing... I still wear mine every day 24/7 and I have not been in the service for close to 20 years now. And I did not even go over seas (I'm from Denmark, but you catch my drift)
