I don't know if anyone ever mentioned something like this, but... it would be wild to watch some (all?) of the movies referenced in this one. We've got... Valley of the Dolls (1967) The Great Escape (1963) The Wrecking Crew (1968) The Night They Raided Minsky's (1968) The Illustrated Man (1969) C.C. & Company (1970) I'm pretty sure there's more from random commercials or marquees in the movie or from other deeper references.

I love the ending to this movie. It has that Inglorious Basterds aspect where they swerve the history of an actual event the most at the very end. With this movie, it’s almost the fact that the character of Rick Dalton exists is enough to create an alternate history.

Robert Cooper

Rick Dalton was kind of a pastiche of Burt Reynolds.

Jayson Phillips

A lot of these movies I don't watch but I gotta say your screen shots are the best!! you are smart. beautiful and funny Simone, and George is just like me minus the bad ass tatts!

Andrew Smith

"A lot of these movies I don't watch" You are missing out on the fun.

Rick is based at least partly on an actor named George Maharis. And the relationship between Rick and Cliff is based on Burt Reynolds and Hal Needham.

John DelVecchio

If you can please watch “What’s eating Gilbert Grape” with a very young Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio and Juliette Lewis. Excellent Movie.

Outside the film, the Tate/LaBianca murders, The Manson Family, is a crazy rabbit hole to dive into. Also the actual house is not there anymore, but as music trivia, Trent Reznor recorded The Downward Spiral there, dubbed it Le Pig, yrs later kinda regretted that.

To me this movie shows the frustration of Tarantino of how the old Hollywood he loved, died with the Manson murders. The brutality of that scene feels like a big "God damn it you miserable people, what did you do, look how it could have gone!" and ending with the living pregnant Sharon Tate.

Paul T Hewes

The Manson's didnt just murder Tate and her friends in real life, they BUTCHERED them. What Tarantino did to them is LESS than what they deserved.

Rick and Cliff were based on several different actors at the time. Clint Eastwood gained fame playing a character on Rawhide back in the 50s, and became iconic in the 60s doing spaghetti westerns like The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly. In the clip from The FBI DiCaprio was digitally inserted over Burt Reynolds. Cliff is an amalgam of several stuntmen, including Hal Needham. Donald "Shorty" Shea was a stuntman working on the Spahn Ranch who was murdered by the Manson cult and buried there. For folks who know about Shea's fate, Cliff's visit to the ranch had some extra tension piled on top.

The radio station everyone in the movie listened to (that provided the soundtrack) was KHJ (AM93), a local station in Los Angeles that was one of the most listened to at the time (before FM radio had developed a huge following). All of the clips, the ads, promotions, and the DJs were from that station and that era. I was 12-13 and lived in the LA area at the time and listening to the soundtrack was incredibly evocative for me.

I will watch the reaction tomorrow, but I am not a fan of this movie. The Alt history element really does not work for me, it just feels….icky. And while Tate is in the movie they don’t do anything with her, which is a weird choice.

REDR58

I agree. While I enjoyed the reaction, this movie is also a real slog. There are some interesting elements to it, but I doubt I will ever watch it again.

His story also reminded me of Clint Eastwoods career. He was mostly nothing but western TV shows, then he did spaghetti westerns and his career skyrocketed after that.
