The Wire: Season 1 - Episode 5 & 6 - Patreon Version

Comments

Will Moffett

Manhattan and NYC in general has changed a lot. Considering it has the population of LA, Chicago, and Miami combined...the crime rate per capita isn't even in the top 50 of the US. That was NOT the case in the 80's and early 90's.

For those like me in Europe with HBO Max for whom these reactions aren't syncing properly (as HBO for some reason retimed all episodes from 24fps to 25fps in EU): I've found a hack to speed up the CineBinge reaction YouTube video to a Custom 1.043x speed, which then keeps things nicely synced. Open the YouTube video on YouTube (not embedded in Patreon), and then open the Dev Console (F12 in Chrome) and copy-paste this in the console and press enter: $('video').playbackRate = 1.043;

Well damn, I need to try this out! Thanks! It's not just HBO, though; it's been this way for decades.

PIG

I know that they are not watching season two right away because of new incoming Patreons, but if Cinebinge really likes The Wire I totally think they should just move on to the next season.

joe shmoe

so since there are 13 episodes in the season, does one week get 1 episode or do you do season 2 episode 1 with the season finale

Stu84

It's great you guys are starting to grow attached to the characters. This show has some amazing character arcs, some that last seasons.

Jack Burton

i ff through the terrible jokes at the beginning of these videos.

JayF

Omar is also based on a real person named Donnie Andrews. The actor that played him Michael K Williams has since passed away.

PIG

lol I like the corny jokes but fast forward is a wonderful invention, that is true.

redddfer44

I want Rawls to receive everything that you threaten your non-subscribers with. You know, I feel like scenes like the one at the end of episode 5 are incredibly underrated and un-talked-about. Filming 6-minute setpieces with no cuts is a technical feat, that's true, detective, but having us nailed to the screen watching fingers pressing buttons and computers going brr beep and displaying some numbers with some disembodied voices in the background -- that takes some good goddamn skill and vision, too.

PIG

That’s why The Wire is so different to me when I first saw it. How such boring and technical detail is the key to the chase.

Jay

Delighted yous are loving it, this show is too good. Great to see Pres show some flex:)

Jeff K

Fun fact: the cop who complains to McNulty early in the episode about "show me someone who can fix this department," etc, is Ed Norris (that's the name of both the character and the actor) - who just happened to be the Baltimore PD Commissioner from 2000-2002 in reality.

Jeff K

Yep. And Donnie Andrews plays a character later in the series. Avon is also based on a real dude, and the real dude also plays a character. And, obviously, Jay Landsman is based on a real dude... named Jay Landsman... who plays a different cop in the show. There are so many people in this show based on real people (won't get into any of the ones who have not appeared yet), and so many real people who wind up playing roles in the show.

John Richards

A little "The Wire" fan geekdom: Did you notice that the morgue where Jimmy and Bunk started episode 2 didn't look like a typical movie/TV morgue? That's because it was not a set... the scene was filmed in the Baltimore City morgue. Whenever possible the series filmed in the actual locations in B-more. Whenever a location is mentioned, it is a real location in the city. The co-creaters of the series were David Simon, who spent 20 years as the police / crime reporter for the Baltimore Sun, and Ed Burns, a 20 year veteran of the BPD. Most of the extra's and a number of the secondary characters are actual residents of the area or former/current police.

I've watched this show all the way through five times, and I'm enjoying watching it with you (and, in spirit, with all of your subscribers) more than any other time except maybe the 1st time. Thank you for doing this. HBO ran the series Deadwood from 2004-2006, during the middle of the Wire's run. Someone suggested to me at the time that the two shows could be considered to be related in a way, as Deadwood portrayed the emergence of a "modern" American city from the wilderness while The Wire shows us the death of the American City. As brilliant as the first season is, what we are being shown is fragments of Baltimore, unique in its presentation but in some ways still a modern police drama. Part of its greatness is that no characters can be dismissed as simply of a type, not even the drug dealers or their customers or stick-up folks -- we see things from their points of view as well. And then Simon et al will take this rich world he creates in Season 1 and build on it in later seasons by adding in other aspects of city life beyond the cops and the drug sellers. We will get a broader and broader view of this whole world, step by step, inch by inch, until the end of the final episode and you wonder if you can ever enjoy watching anything on television again... Again, thank you for making this possible for us!

The Wire days are happy days!

face palm

The Wire and Deadwood...I can't decide which is the better show. They're tied for #1 in my book.

Alex Ch

Making you see the words Deadwood Season 1 one more time…

Jack Burton

I, also, would like to shout DEADWOOD at the top of my lungs. I've never seen anyone out there react to it and I'd love if you guys did. It's not long and is masterfully written, acted, and it's just a wonderful experience.

Goldmember

Well, they did 3 Episodes in the last week of Arcane, so maybe they'll do that here aswell.

Andrew

Completely unrelated to The Wire, but I wanted to suggest the TV show Letterkenny. I figure you might have already seen it since it's a Canadian show, but if not, it's super funny!

Starromania72

For GoT comparisons, Rawls is not Joffrey, he's more like Ser Alliser Thorne of the Night's Watch, a senior arsehole with his own ideas about policing/nightwatching that's at significant odds with young up-and-comer Det. McNulty/Snow. Also, Owen Teale who plays Thorne, plays an even more similar character to Rawls in British cop show Line of Duty, a senior police officer of possibly even greater arseholitiude than Rawls.

Jeff K

Letterkenny is great, though it's kinda spinning its wheels with this last season. Shoresy, on the other hand, was fantastic and much better than it had any right to be.

PIG

Yeah the most Geoffrey character in The Wire hasn’t appeared yet.

Jon B

If you guys keep watching The Wire, you're gonna go wild to see who is running for Mayor in the later seasons.

Robert Cooper

You guys keep talking. Omar's not a character. Omar is a force of nature. Omar is the consequences of living outside the law.

Robert Cooper

Oh, you want people to see the errors of their ways... My sweet summer child. The lesson to be learned from The Wire is that in a big American city that isn't Manhattan, nothing changes.

james repka

Or even Manhattan... The point is that, to the point that institutions change at all, it is that they slowly evolve to survive.
