I love it sooooo much!!!!

Lol. Deadpool vibes... Gremlins 2 a "Christmas Movie".

mojo shivers

You should watch the sequel. It leans even further into parody and callbacks to other films and tv shows. It definitely goes for the humor even more than the original.

Was really looking forward to this. Great stuff 👍 I knew Simone would completely fall for Gizmo :) I agree that you can watch Christmas movies at any time you want. If I feel like a Christmas movie I'll watch a Christmas movie. People voting for the movie probably agrees. I do think there is a distinction between "Christmas movies" and "Christmas movies" though. To me the difference is weather the movie is about the "Christmas message" or not. I'd probably not watch "Miracle on 34th Street" (1994) apart from at Christmas time....... OK.... I probably would 😂 Gremlins is a folklore to explain things happening that you can't explain or machines constantly breaking down. It was widely used especially during WWII to explain mechanical failures in machines. (it has nothing to do with the creatures in this movie though) Here in Denmark where I'm from there is a similar folklore. They are called "Drille-nisse" which translated means "tease elf". It was used to explain strange things that happens in your house. That folklore is hundreds of years old.

I'm all in for the sequel as well - no matter what time of the year it is :)

the sequel is batshit crazy but I definitely think you guys would get a kick out of it. It also pokes fun at the logic of some of the rules.

Adam Wetstein

So many meta references in this movie. The wizard of oz “ I m going to get you to the dog “. Hello Dr Moreau “ are just two

Ken Myers

The sequel kind of spoofs the silliness of this idea by taking it to 11.

William D

Gremlins 2 is probably a good shout for Christmas, what a sequel, really leans into the comedy.

Odd Thomas

The sequel is better imo

Pam Nail

It wasn't a commercial to sell toys. There was certainly a lot of merch afterwards given the movie's popularity (Gizmo was the Baby Yoda of the 80s), but the movie came first. Chris Columbus originally wrote this as a spec script to show industry people his writing ability. It wasn't even intended to be filmed until it got the attention of Steven Spielberg.

David Guin

You still have time to do Little Shop of Horrors for Halloween

Adam Wetstein

I think you should have a scale instead of five stars it’s how many times Simone says no in reaction

Thomas Yanez

I don't compare them, as they are not the same kind of movie. The original was a genuine attempt to make the movie that was made. The sequel is a cash grab in its purest form, yet distinct (especially for the time) from others by its self-awareness and self-mockery.

JoeNotCharles

This reaction made me realize that I've never seen Gremlins. I know so much about it from pop culture references that I assumed I'd watched it as a kid and only remembered the highlights, but no - I don't recognize ANYTHING except Gizmo and the Gremlins themselves!

Nick

The term “gremlin” predates the movie. It comes from WWII (British Royal Air Force) and was a folkloric explanation for mechanical failures in aircraft. If something broke down, it wasn’t because of wear and tear or defects, it was mischievous creatures (gremlins) who got inside and mucked up the machinery. The term was expanded from aircraft to explain mechanical failures in all sorts of machinery. These original gremlins weren’t evil, they were mischievous, breaking things just to cause mayhem. This is what the old man was talking about when saying gremlins get into machines and break them. The film simply adapted these folkloric creatures for its Christmas horror-comedy. This wasn’t the first use of gremlins in film/TV. A very famous 1963 episode of the Twilight Zone episode guest staring William Shatner and directed by Richard Donner (Superman 1978, The Goonies, Lethal Weapon 2-4, etc) also featured gremlins (he was a passenger on a commercial aircraft and goes crazy as he can see gremlins outside mucking with the engines, but no one else can see them): “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet”.

Oscar Diggs

The Bugs Bunny gremlin cartoon was one of my favorites, and that’s from 1943. It’s a great concept. We still talk about gremlins in the server room.👍😄

James Whalen

That reaction went exactly how I thought it would, for a comedy movie. I still don't know how this won a horror poll.

Guy Gordon

Yes, the sequel is a must watch. A personal favorite. Definitely cranks it to 11. And it does poke fun at things like you were mentioning in the reaction (time zones, etc).

michael clarke

check out the sequel. its considered one of the most insane sequels of all time because its just self parody.

Dooly

Gremlins have existed in folklore before that cartoon.
