They weren't really preventing the prawns from fixing the ship, the prawns simply weren't able to do it.

Ah, those were the good old days, when you'd have a "government" doing weapons research on the likes of the unfortunate Mr van de Merve. An important distinction, MNU in the movie isn't the government. It's just a private transnational corporation with more power than most governments and zero accountability or oversight A couple of things I like to think about: We're not told any word for the aliens aside from "prawn" which is obviously a slur. This simple move prevents us from sitting comfortably removed from the bigotry of the characters; we don't get a way to relate to or discuss the aliens except for through the prejudiced lens of the humans. And also, what do the prawns normally fight with those guns?

I've watched a lot of films. Like "shut in" volumes. It is so rare, and such an exquisite gift when a movie is half way through and I have absolutely NO IDEA where it is going. Sharlto Copely improvised most of his lines. Bring on District 10 !

What if the aliens were originally something else and we're all turned into the same thing Wikus did. Like some kind of ship wide incidence with that black fuel fluid. That could explain why the command crew abandoned ship. It is possible that we have not even met the real aliens yet.

It's too early to think of anything clever to say to I'll just enjoy this reaction. Thanks!

When I saw this movie I had no idea what it was about. Never watched a trailer, read the longline or anything. And man did it ever floor me. Starting the reaction now, I hope you guys enjoy it.

It's a great movie. Blomkamp's other films are good from a tech/sci-fi aspect, but not as satisfying story-wise as D9. Chappie would be my next favourite, followed by Elysium.

Tim Boxall

Saving this to watch tonight when I can settle down with a cuppa and a can of Whiskas with meaty chunks.

Samuel Bruce

Elysium is also a great Blomkamp movie and worth a watch.

Great reaction! You two have been killing it with these movie choices on your polls. Now could you do me a favor and include either Hell or High Water or Wind River on your next poll? If you saw the comments on your Sicario reaction you will see those two movies are written by the same person that wrote Sicario. Wind River was also directed by him. I don't expect they will win on their first appearance on a poll so please just include one of them and see how it does.

Super enjoyed watching this with you both! District 9 is such a good movie. It really pulled at my heart strings a number of times. lol, it's a movie that forces you to consider how awful humanity is and what we'd be like in a similar situation. I first watched this shortly after it hit theaters and back then the world was a good bit different in terms of what's acceptable and not with refugees and people of other origins. If this was made today I don't think that it would be as solid of a movie as this was. I'm thankful that it was made then. The aliens effects and gear/weaponry were all bad ass! I loved how each of their weapons more or less disintegrated anybody that was hit and left a pile of goo for remains. Very entertaining! Glad this movie was made and that you guys reacted to it. :D

Great reaction. If I had my choice of movies for you all to react to, this movie would make the short list (and it was better than Dredd). Thanks for being awesome!

I’m with Simone’s district 9 sequel, he came back in 3 years and annihilated the MCU, also great reaction by both of you.

Now that's top shelf sci-fi/action. Really hoping we get a sequel some day. It is a very unique movie, but the concept of alien refugees and how humans might handle it reminds me of Alien Nation, the aliens in that were much more human-like though, it was a pretty good movie (and then a show) but not as good as this one.

Ken Myers

Interesting movie. I do think the MC's betrayal of Christopher when he found out it was 3 years is too stupid / contrived. I mean, the notion he himself could somehow figure out (1) how to fly that ship to the mother ship, (2) how to dock with it, (3) find the medical technology that can fix him, (4) program it to fix him, is such a billion to one shot, versus...waiting three years and having a reasonable chance at a cure, like maybe 50/50? I think it is a movie that is good on a visceral level, but the more you think of it, the more stuff does not seem to really add up, like Inception or Matrix. Like, if we find aliens, are we really going to experiment on them which could potentially provoke a war with a species that has much more advanced technology than us? Sure, maybe those from the ship are too weak and cut off from their technology to be a threat, but what if their people come looking for them, find them, find out how we treated their people? That would DEFINITELY be a major talking point among the powers that be. For self-preservation, we would treating the aliens better. Also, the way this movie portrays things, it's like the whole world just kind of said took a hands off approach and let South Africa deal with the mess of the alien refugees and technology. No way would that happen. All of the world's nations would be converged and working round the clock to examine, learn, analyze, etc. And just because the trigger of weaponry might be tied to dna so that humans can't fire the weapon, does not mean you cannot take the weapon apart to see how it works and build a version that a human can fire. Moreover, the weaponry seems like very small beans compared to the anti-grav technology and capacity for interstellar travel inherent in the mother ship. Plus, I guess, some super advanced medical technology. How is that mother ship not crawling with human scientists? Moreover, how is it not crawling with human scientists WORKING WITH THE ALIENS to learn about the technology. Ultimately, those aliens were treated like poor refugees with nothing to offer, a burden to whoever took them in. When, in fact, they came with a wealth of riches to bestow if we talk to them, work cooperatively with them. Anyway, it was a cool movie, but the more I think about it, the less I buy that this is how our society would deal with this kind of situation. Which is actually a good thing because the movie makes you pissed at humans for being bastards, but fortunately it's just a movie and in reality we would not be nearly so horrible. I'm not saying there would not be any greedy militant pricks trying to cash in or willing to dissect an alien to find their weaknesses "just in case" we ever had war with them, but not on the level shown here.

Sci-fi Recommendation: - Europa Report - Science based space exploration, similar to The Martian, with a surprising good cast, including Sharlto Copley who starred in District 9, and Michael Nyqvist. I bet both of you LOVE it and are blown away/surprised. - Battle: Los Angeles - Think an updated Independence Day, but better than the Independence Day Resurgence sequel, or like Edge of Tomorrow except without the Groundhog Day. Alien invasion action blockbuster, with more of a military lean, that did meh in NA but did better overseas, $210+ million box office. Decent cast, including Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez, Michael Peña, Bridget Moynahan and countless other actors whose faces you'll recognize but name you won't. Overall, both are super fun sci-fi movies, that slipped through the cracks of the mainstream. (Also, you could have one of the first reactions/reviews/commentaries for either of these movies on Youtube, corner the market.)

This was a lot of fun to watch. George went Opium at the end, I'm with Simone. McDonald's was the instant thought I had. The Zappy Splatter guns were somehow very satisfying to see. Interesting idea to think about an unimaginably more advanced alien race coming to Earth and being practically helpless. Great reaction.

David RedEagle

Umm Simone, I think you need a bigger mug...

Neill Blomkamp’s follow-up, Elysium (2013) is also worth watching. It’s not quite as good as D13, but it feels like a bit of a spiritual sequel in some ways. It also stars Sharlto Copley who played Wikus.

After this film I would watch Elysium with Matt Damon and Jodie Foster. It has a Cyberpunk dynamic to it but not the neon look.
