Gremlins - Patreon Version

Kinokind

My reasoning has been, does it take place at Christmas, or is it about Christmas? Could it take place at any other time of the year? "Die Hard" could take place at another time. The party could be a staff party, or the birthday of some bigshot. "Gremlins" doesn't have to be at Christmas (although then we might not have Phoebe Cates' delightful Christmas story to enjoy). "Miracle on 34th Street", or "A Christmas Carol" on the other hand . . .

Canadian treasure Howie Mandel as the voice of Gizmo

It was around the point the mother throws a Gremlin in the microwave that my six year-old self said 'Yeahhh I'm out'. I stand by that.

Me: Watch good movies whenever the he** you want. Every day is the same day as every other day. Also Me: Loves to binge spooky stuff the month of October because I love spooky stuff and it's the perfect excuse to tell myself when I want to binge it but I don't really have the time to spare. I agree 100%. Anyone putting off watching a good movie because it is "not that time of year" makes no sense to me. Why limit yourself? Now if you are looking for inspiration as to what to watch present day..... Then picking something themed to that time of year can be a great way to help you decide. If you are in a home surrounded by Christmas decorations, then a Christmas themed movie kinda fits the mood around you. Tldr: I'm all for themed stuff as long as it is present day. I don't like "waiting for that time of year" to watch something I want to watch now.

I love this movie. I suggest the sequel, it loses some of the fun since you know what’s up, but it gets there with some fun new twists on the creatures. George, if you have ever played the Overlord games, they are sorta a cross between Lord of the Rings and this movie. If you have never played them, I suggest Overlord 1 and 2.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

This was was a kids movie in the 80s. The sequel is actually pretty meta, like the filmmakers understood they were leaving the 80s for the 90s, and it's funny too, highly recommend 👍

Theoshin

gremlins 2 is great, because from my understanding(and i maybe wrong) The Director didn't really want to make it so he decide to go off the walls so to speak and just make fun of his first movie, and all other forced movie squeals and tropes .

Young Blood Priest

After all these years of seeing this movie I just noticed a cameo. Near the beginning when Billy was sitting at the bar drawing, the old guy next to him, Mr. Jone, was Chuck Jones. He animated and directed all the looney tunes and merry Melodie’s cartoons from back in the day.

Patrons: *Floods the comment section of the poll saying it is a christmas movie* George: "No way for us to know that it was a christmas movie" It is just a joke (in case someone needs to have this clarified)

Alfredo Topete Escamilla

In my own very personal opinion; sometimes it is a little disappointing when you wait the whole year for October to see your favorite reactors (love you guys) watch a horror movie and then they watch a comedy. And don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed this reaction, I just wanted to vent a little bit on strangers from the internet hahaha.

AlimonyMoney

The funniest thing about this movie, is that they never filmed the gremlins killing anyone. People assumed they killed people but never actually seen them doing it.

Edit: Sorry the dang Enter/Shift Enter got me again!! Every freakin version of Patreon comment section has different "Enter" rules. Desktop messages is different than Desktop comments. Mobile comments is different that Mobile "desktop version enabled" comments. etc... I have had similar feeling (with all reactors). Not just with Horror Comedy. I think that is the main issue in itself. The category "Horror" is so vast and covers so many different styles. Everyone has their own idea of what "Horror" is to them. Everyone likes different things. Me for example. I don't like Old/Classic Horror. Right now if I do an internet search I would have a hard time finding a single movie on a "Best Horror" list I would be excited to watch. Most of those list are 99% Old Horror. Ok I just did that! A top 100 Horror movies list has one of my all time favorites at #98 !!! Because of that many reactors fill polls with old/classic horror, and one of them usually wins. I would like polls that divide the horror into individual categories. But that would make for a lot of polls with a lot more movies than they have time for. Luckily there is a lot of reaction channels doing a wide variety of horror movies and shows so we all have fun stuff to watch.

on Christmas I always watch die hard, Lethal weapon and gremlins lol , This is a movie that you can't take seriously, the actor that plays Billy even brought up the rule about eating after midnight to the director and director just said they would make fun of it in the sequel (and they did), Yes the town is the same town as in back to the future. Also apparently the puppet of gizmo was such a pain it was constantly breaking down it frustrated the crew so much a list was made "horrible things to do to gizmo" this list was used when the gremlins "tortured" gizmo (same thing for the sequel). gremlins 2 makes fun of everything and is worth it.

Ry Jo

also the actor that plays the younger cop is the same actor that plays Mike Ehrmantraut from breaking bad if you have seen it.

Thomas Yanez

I love that no reactor ever catches what happens in the background behind the dad while he is on the phone from the convention (the first time).

Thomas Yanez

The third movie shown on TV, that had the man screaming, was the 1956 version of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers".

Thomas Yanez

I also love how nobody ever recognizes Jonathan Banks (the character Mike Ehrmantraut in "Breaking Bad" and "Better Call Saul") as the Deputy.

Logan Kerlee

lol, yup. YouTube general folks may have a tough time swallowing that one. We'll see.

Christopher Greenley

Definitely do Gremlins 2. It is a completely different vibe. Great satire etc. Plus more Gizmo, a Brain, surprises, and it has a great bit in it. With a movie critic who hated the first film. Giving a bad review. Join in on the fun. Lets just say he's not to popular with the Gremlins!😆

hurryupmode

The house set was reused for That 70s Show.

Monica Alarcon

Just to add my opinion, Yes, watch Gremlins 2... for extended Lore there's a novelization wich goes a bit into the origin of the Mogwai but I don't think it's cannon. Here's an audiobook version if you're curious https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5dRTCW6rNQ And also coming soon is an animated prequel series called Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai apparently coming next year...

REDR58

"Innerspace" and "The 'Burbs" are another pair of excellent Joe Dante films to add to a future watch list.

Opti_Frog

So much fun. Gremlins is anarchy and punk rock vs americana wholesomeness. The first draft of the script was much more like a proper horror movie with very little humor, where Billy's mom WAS killed and decapitated. The gremlins eat all the guests at a McDonald's. There was no "good" mogwai. In fact, making Gizmo the hero of the movie was Spielberg's idea. I don't much care for the sequel. Dante completely drops the horror angle and it's just a parade of wacky gremlin skits. A very extended version of the bar scene from the first movie was not what i hoped for in a Gremlins sequel.

Eddy V Ruiz II

the only reason to watch this is to get to the sequel

Middy

I loved the sequel as a kid, it was only as I grew older I started to appreciate this one more. At this point, I think I'd say that this is technically the better movie, but Gremlins 2: The New Batch is still great entertainment.

Grumples

As a bunch have already said I hope you guys watch the second movie. It's just off the walls chaos lol

DinChild

I didn't during the first scene. But the second, it was unmistakable.

Haye Zeus

Don’t worry George. All your questions will be addressed in the sequel once you go ahead and quickly watch it. Like now.

Middy

George asked if this movie was made to sell merch. I don't believe that was the case, but I can tell you with certainty that it's really, really difficult to find a visually faithful Gizmo toy. I spent a fair amount of time searching and practically every one of them just looks awful. The only genuinely good Gizmo I found was custom made and way, way out of my price range.

Kinokind

Trivia: (1) Aside from the famous Warner Brothers animator Chuck Jones commenting on billy's drawings at the bar, the movie is stuffed with cameos including Steven Spielberg, score composer Jerry Goldsmith, classic sci-fi actors Kenneth Tobey and William Schallert, etc. (2) Howie Mandel did Gizmo's voice (3) Mogwai means monster or devil in Cantonese (3) The studio hated Phoebe Cates' dead father story, and wanted it cut, but no less than Steven Spielberg, who had hired Dante, told him to stand his ground. The first time I saw the film I HATED the story for the way it slaps one in the face, but over the years It has become my favorite part. Joe Dante wanted it because he said it summed up the film's combination of horror and comedy. I love it now both because it would be horrific if it was true, and the absurdity of the story itself: PEOPLE CAN'T FIT DOWN CHIMNEYS! Presents or not. A typical chimney flue is perhaps a foot square. It's not possible! I like to think that this is some kind of psychotic delusion that her character has, or a compulsive lie. It's the romantic in me. Of course this story, along with the arbitrary mogwai rules, are made fun of in the sequel. See Gremlins 2. And beware Lincoln's birthday!

Kinokind

Other great Joe Dante movies: The Burbs, Matinee, The Hole, The Howling, Inner Space, etc.

Steve Mercier

Not only is it always after midnight, but the gremlins are moving around in winter...in snow...they're literally getting wet with every step they take. I know it's only a movie, but these things bothered me very much when I was a child and watched it over and over again.

Steve Mercier

This movie also works as a very 80's and very racist metaphor for Americans' fear of the foreigner. Gizmo, the foreigner, is smuggled into white suburbia and then immediately multiplies, its unruly and evil 'children' destroying everything within a single 'generation', while the 'honest white man' tries to peddle his gadgets (but can't compete with foreign goods), all the jobs are closing down, and the old WWII veteran remembers the good old days when he fought the foreign commies. And everything is made better again when the gremlins are killed, and Gizmo goes back to Chinatown. All in the name of Capitalism. Jesus fucking Christ. And now, writing this at 2:04am on the internet, I suddenly realize what a bad idea it is to post this...but...

Young Blood Priest

How did I miss Spielberg? What scene? Not only did he slip while inside a 12” wide chimney flue he broke his neck in the process. I still remember people chuckling in the theater.

Lindsay G

That's quite a clever reading of the movie, but I don't think that's what it's about.

Ricardo Alanis

And yes, the town square is the same lot as Back to the Future so a lot of the buildings and the movie theater are the same.

Martin Nicholls

I don't think it can be just set at Christmas, Christmas has to form part of the plot in some way - it doesn't need a huge role - but yeah I'm with George on that. Like Die Hard he's visiting his wife and kids _because_ it's Christmas and when it happens they're at a Christmas party. I'd also add Christmas music to the list as well. Also traditionally _shown_ at Christmas can make a movie a Christmas movie regardless of when it is set: Goonies is one for me because of that, also Mary Poppins (yes, the original, come on now) - I have vivid memories of both of them _at_ Christmas,

Steve H

Did you notice? Mike Ermantrout was the deputy

Alan Kobb

The movies inside the movie are: - It's a Wonderful Life. Yes, this is absolutely a Christmas movie, George. I dare you...nea, I double-dare you to try to watch this is July! - To Please a Lady. A racing movie starring Clark Gable. - Orpheus. The ancient tale, set in mid-20th century France. - Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Strange seed pods from space land in San Francisco and gradually take over the people... - Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. A pornographic film. Sorry. That's Snow White and the 7 Horny Dwarves. The one in the movie is actually the original from Disney, the same people who are bringing you the R-Rated Deadpool 3!

Reiji Kobayashi

Totally agree. Although I must say that I have no idea how youtube reactors can refrain from watching stuff when they're not making videos.

Dr. Johnny Fever

If sunlight kills you then you are a demon. Sorry Giz, you gotta go too.

sarCC

Really happy you two realized this was a Christmas movie like 10 minutes in.
