Why wasn't he Gandalf? Halliday is very much based on Richard Garriott (creator of the Ultima games), who's in game alter ego was a grand wizard named Lord British.

This movie is okay so long as you don't read the book. If you read the book you will hate the movie because of all the lost content and opportunities. I personally love the audiobook because Wil Wheaton reads it. Which is hilarious because he is mentioned in the book.

Biggest reason I skipped the audio book was Wheaton. That mans voice is a colonoscopy.

Yeah, the only disappointment was all the cool references they changed for the movie as I liked the book culture references better. But the movie is good too and obviously getting all the rights from the book would’ve cost major money, but I’ll always imagine what could’ve been if the book had been filmed as is.

The book is so weird though, it's a young adult novel written for people who were near their 30s when the book was released. A bit like stranger things, 80s nostalgia for people who weren't alive back then and have a romanticized view of that decade. I'm not really a fan of that trend as it can lead to weird behavior (like how some people think the 50s were the good old days)

it's nice to see the references but otherwise the movie isn't that good to be honest

I am NOT a fan of this movie at all (saw it in theaters and almost walked out), glad you two could enjoy it but will take this time to repeat what others have said: you two HAVE to see The Iron Giant it is a true masterpiece!

The time rewind gadget is called a Zemeckis cube because Robert Zemeckis directed the 'Back to the Future' movies. Which feature a protagonist who travels into the past to alter it. And it looks like a Rubik's cube because 80ies.
