Coming to America - Patreon Version

A movie I would love to see you guys react to is 'In Bruges', I've seen it recommended a few times and I hope it gains more traction from your patrons. It's director, Martin McDonagh, and it's two leads, Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell, have just reunited for a new film that's just been released, so it might be a good time to watch 'In Bruges'.

I was just about to crash out, but looks like I'm rallying with a breakfast burrito and watching Coming To America at 5am instead lol Also, that's Louie Anderson, the big guy working at McDowell's, he was a stand up comic and actor, even had an animated show for a while; one of my favorite "clean" comics. John Landis directed and Rick Baker (The Thing) did the makeup, they're the American Werewolf In London team. Oh yeah! Randolph and Mortimer, I forgot about that joke. From Eddie Murphy's first movie.

Young Blood Priest

This is Samuel L. Jackson’s first movie appearance.

William

still laughing at Simone's reaction to the exocist :) Great reation guys to a great fim

Young Blood Priest

The Jewish guy in the barber shop was Eddie Murphy. Some versions of the movie will show that info and some versions won’t. Go figure. When I saw this in the theater and Eddie’s name flashed over the face of the Jewish man, everyone in the theater gasped cause the makeup job and his impersonation was so good.

Jay Davis

Yeah. No. Don't bother with the new one. I'll agree with others, watch Trading Places instead. (Though really it should've come before this one.) And it has Jamie Lee Curtis!

Young Blood Priest

Louie Anderson was a great stand up…R.I.P. John Landis also directed the Twilight Zone movie that almost got him sent to prison. The joke with Randolph and Mortimer, I believe, is from Eddie Murthy’s second movie. His first movie was 48 Hours with Nick Nolty.

So the two homeless guys are a reference to another John Landis movie, Trading Places (1983). That’s a movie that takes place around Christmas, but I would not classify it as a Christmas movie. You guys should add that to the schedule, it’s fantastic. Some other trivia: John Landis is the father of Max Landis, the writer of World War Z (book) and the Zombie Survival Guide.

Rob Parry

Trading Places unfortunately is one of those comedies while kind of funny at time mostly because of Eddie Murphy, did not age well. There are couple of scenes that would be considered pretty offensive now, especially to people that didn't grow up in the 80's. So, watch if you want but a little heads up.

Every "over the top" character in this (the preacher, the barbers, etc.) are played either by Eddie Murphy or Arsenio Hall in makeup. Also, Randolph and Mortimer (the two homeless guys he gave the "pocket change" to) are characters from one of Eddie Murphy's greatest movies, "Trading Places" (which Jamie Lee Curtis stars in, as well!)

ChickensAreRacist

Landis also directed Michael Jackson’s Thriller video and has a cameo as a rising zombie. Sadly that’s what I know him most by.

Question: Why do you only show the poster in the Youtube version? It would be nice to see in the full Patreon version too as you're describing to Simone in the intro...

JayF

I have only watched the YT version so far but you didn't seem to recognize Eriq La Salle (Darryl). He would go on to play Peter Benton in the TV show ER. Later he would appear in the movie Logan. He was the father of the family that Logan and Charles stayed with that got killed.

Dr. Johnny Fever

So much fun guys! Thanks! I'm going to make my fiance watch your reaction even though she's not into reactions. You dorks made me cry at the end lol wtf.

Thomas Yanez

It doesn't show it when he's on screen, but he is listed as "Saul", with a credit for Eddie Murphy, in the credit scroll. Edit : correction, on researching it, before the movie was converted to HD digital formats, there used to be a flash of a credit under Saul's name, wiped and then pops up again with the next character he played. Not sure why they changed that.

REDR58

George, I take it that you didn't recognize the "Avengers" jet as a real aircraft? It's the "Concorde" airliner which was used by British Airways and Air France as the only supersonic-capable airliner to be operated other than a similar aircraft used by the former Soviet Union. It was very expensive and the service lasted only from 1976 to 2003.

Okay, whew. I don't know where to start. The first time I saw this movie, I think I was 6, and even then I loved it. I had a few notes ready to fire off after the movie and then I read the comments and saw people already addressed some important points: Coming to America 2 is not worth your time. Yes, yes, that was Eddie Murphy (the first thing I wanted to say that someone got to before me when the movie finished).. You can plainly see this movie was all Eddie Murphy. It's great, yeah? Okay, but it undersells his popularity and how unique his comedic genius was. He defined a generation when it came to comedy, and this movie was one of a ton that exemplified his talent. Eddie Murphy was a mammoth of his time. Aresnio Hall. He was Eddie Murphy's sidekick through the movie. He hosted one of the most popular late night talk shows in the late 80s/90s when this came out. This guy was huge, so him in this movie was significant. Deserves his props. Louis Anderson. George, I think you said something about recognizing the white guy from McDowell's when he entered the scene, but you couldn't pinpoint where he was from. His name is Louis Anderson and he was VERY famous at the height of his career in America. Hosted Family Feud, voice acted for cartoons, was in numerous films and shows--lots of people knew who he was. A prominent standup comedian, author, and a ton of other shit I'm probably not tracking, Love you guys, thank you for the reaction!

Ricardo Alanis

One reference the barbershop guys kept using was Kunta Kinte from the African slavery novel and miniseries “Roots”, played by LeVar Burton in 1977.

redddfer44

I enjoyed the movie quite a lot -- until he cut his hair. It's probably not intentional, but somehow it lost a lot of its edge and character after that. I enjoyed Murphy a lot more as Prince Akeem than in any of his other roles in this. I'm joining the "Trading Places" choir, despite some of its iffy bits. If you're like me and you liked the first third of this movie more than the rest of it, I'd wager that we'd be in for some uncontrollably giggly George and wide-eyed shocked Simone.

Logan Kerlee

Watching this reaction with you both was so much fun! I had a great time. I think I may've watched this as a youngster and forgot about it.. I'm not certain. Doesn't matter though - this was gold. So much fun! I loved each of the characters. James Earl Jones did a fantastic job playing the king. I was cracking up a number of times when he was onscreen. This was a great one with Eddie Murphy! I loved that it also featured other comedians a bit. lol, even one that you both didn't recognize somehow.. Louis Anderson! He's so funny!! Back when this came out he was on top of comedy. Hosted Family Feud as well and he went on to voice characters in cartoons.

Odd Thomas

The sequel is ok, I think expectations were too high after 30 years. It's fun but not as good as the original.

Thomas Yanez

I don't think expectations were too high, I think their aim was too low, going for too many "remember this" shots.

Samuel Vincent

I would reccomend watching Trading places. It's a, slightly, earlier Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd film, also starring Jamie Lee Curtis. It explains the two homeless men he gives the money to. It's an easter egg.

Paul Tassin

One of my favorite movies of all time and your reaction was so fun! Please do Coming 2 America! Yeah sure, it’s not as funny but it was cute and they brought everyone back! It was a fun nostalgia trip. Please watch it!
