The Expanse: Season 2 - Episode 5 & 6 - Patreon Version

Daniel Popp

Now that you two know Miller becomes infected by the Protomolecule, you can know why Miller and Julie were seeing visions of eachother. The protomolecule has the ability to communicate with itself through time, that's part of it working to accomplish its goal (won't say anything more on that to avoid spoilers). So when Julie saw Miller, the show was basically telling everyone that Miller would eventually become infected without flat out telling us. And when Miller has his visions of Julie and tells Naomi of his dream of Julie telling him he belongs with her, he was seeing what was about to happen without realizing it. It was a sort of ripple effect through time, reaching back into his subconscious before he became infected. The protomolecule is but a taste of the power wielded by those that created it, and I can't wait to see your reactions to all the other weird stuff that's about to happen because of it.

the moon was Ganymede the biggest moon of the solar system, and the planet wasnt venus it was jupiter.

Daniel Popp

Ganymede was also specifically colonized because it has a magnetosphere that protects the surface from both cosmic radiation and radiation emitted by Jupiter. Makes it a great place to safely gestate and birth babies. Makes it a prime location for growing crops too, hence the orbital mirrors destroyed in the battle at the end of the episode.

Frankie H

To answer Simone's question the fight at the end happened on Ganymede, moon of Jupiter. You can see Jupiter in the background. Jupiter is the 5th planet in the system and beyond the asteroid belt putting it in the outer solar system. So it's nowhere near Venus. Also episode 5 season 2 was the end of book 1. Episode 6 is the start of book 2 so if you detect a shift in tone that's why.

George is a lovely human and i am so damn jealous of his hair. Never stop guessing. That's what makes your reactions so good. It's seeing how absolutely on point some of your guesses are and how wildly off some of the others are. As far the episodes go, one of the little details that most miss is that at first Julie is struggling to control the station. However, when miller puts her hand on the nuke, she gets a little "jolt' of energy cuz the protomolecule feeds on radiation. combined with Miller finally not making her feel alone, she was able to get the job done. To answer your questions, Miller was the og plan to kill eros. But after earth's missiles came, he became the Backup plan. I dont know why they didnt include that bit.

Miricat

I believe Miller kept going after Earth launched because he heard Julie's voice in the mix. His one motivation throughout was to find her come hell or high water, and he wasn't going to let impending death stop him. Not to mention the Rocinante had no chance of docking with a massively accelerating station with a zero inertia field around it. Just think what 10+ G's of thrust would do as they popped through the border of the field.

Serious question. I've gotten up to episode 6 of season 1 with the reactions and, maybe its me projecting, but George doesn't seem to be enjoying the series all that much. Has that changed with season 2?

Generators

im gonna guess George isnt enjoying the show, considering how quiet he is during these episodes compare to other shows or movies. but since ppl told him to stfu in S1 and to stop talking, hes just holding back and choosing to say nothing. since toxic fandoms are the worst.

I haven't watched their Expanse reactions but based on a lot of comments, they aren't enjoying the show as much as we'd like them to... and that's fine. I hope they don't continue with it after this season because if they don't like it already by this point, I can't see them warming up to it in S3. There's so many other shows they could react to and I think it's just awkward if they continue the show just to try and finish it.

Amos is genuinely one of the most interesting and compelling characters I've encountered in any show, or books for that matter. For much of the first season or two, it's easy to dismiss him as the stereotypical mindless muscle character. But like most of this show, the information is dripped out to you slowly. Wes Chatham spent a lot of time with psychologists and therapists, researching how different types of childhood trauma manifest in adults. It's a testament to the subtly of his performance that he does seem so one dimensional at first. He's not telegraphing the hurricane of emotions that's constantly raging inside him. It helps that the actor was a big fan of the books before being cast, and Amos was his favourite character.

Your second sentence already contained spoilers. Would you mind editing your post so that others don't have to get spoiled like I did?

Abush

They are enjoying the 2nd season way more. like almost all the fans.

The show is getting better and I'm glad there are even some lighthearted moments. I'm intrigued and will finish S2 at least, probably even see what S3 has to offer. I also put the reservation in in my local library for the first book. But I think what bugs me the most -- aside from many of the characters still feeling like my parents fighting -- is a feeling that the show is constantly, in every single scene, trying to impress, to prove something. With no room to breathe, no time to gather its narrative force, it's a constant effort to try to make the best impression possible. There's always music and most characters still try to out-batman Christian Bale. Worst of all, I find the narrative hard to follow because of information overload. So many things cramped into scenes where people move, talk, and look at screens simultaneously. So when something actually interesting happens, I feel numb and exhausted. Kinda feels like hanging with a person who's desperate to be the most entertaining person in the room. Still, the developments are moderately interesting, the space stuff is exceptionally plausible, and I'm starting to like a couple of the characters.

Spacedone

Absolutely agree here. Wes Chatham really nailed the Amos Burton character with his performance. He's also a very funny film nerd in the Ty & That Guy podcast.

I will say, I understand the hesitancy. I enjoyed S1 and S2, and it took me a while to get to S3 at the time. But I just want to put as definitively as I can that Season 3 of The Expanse is astounding television (not to say the subsequent ones are any worse, they're not) There's a certain run of episodes mid S3 that had me texting all my friends to get on this show asap, and it just continues to improve. There are characters in the show that we've seen so far that are just okay , but become top tier characters in all science fiction by the show's end.

Parabolica

I’ve never got the editing in the last 5 minutes of this ep; everything is fine/understandable up until the point where all of a sudden the MCRN ships are in combat and the sun reflectors are shot up - there’s just no explanation as to who they are fighting (in orbit). It does feel like they decided to tack-on the last 10 mins to this ep just so they could have that cliffhanger; I’m betting the original cut had this at the start of the next ep, leading up to the title sequence.

Daniel Popp

Someone (they weren't clear if it was the UN or Mars) panicked when they lost audio and visual contact with their troops on the surface. As far as that one person was concerned, their ground troops were under attack and gave the order to open fire on the other nations ships. I thought it was a perfect depiction of the fog of war when you end up in a battle where you have no idea who fired first, only that you need to fire back.

michael mccafferty

I enjoyed Avrasrala's fire and brimstone speech to Erinwright. She knows Erinwright and Mao are working together, so she is literally making the same threats to Erinwright, but using Mao as a rhetorical device. Prior to this speech, Erinwright wasn't convinced that Avrasarala was aware of his scheming. It is clear by the end of that speech that he is fully caught up.

Robert Cooper

Yeah, I know I posted it earlier, but you have now turned the s2e5 corner, and The Expanse is going to be among the best Sci Fi you have ever seen.

Nikodevious

I really hope you stick with the series, and come to love Amos as much as the rest of us. He's profoundly complex, and that's all I'm going to say about that.

WarWulf

George, as a die hard Expanse fan, I don't think it's necessary for you to keep your opinions to yourself. If the comment I made turned you off to it, consider it retracted (but I don't think I did). My advice to anyone who is annoyed that someone isn't immediately sold on a series: take a break, come back at a later time and see if that person has got into it yet. If it still riles you, there's plenty of other content on here that will serve to entertain. George, you should always feel free to unleash your thoughts. It's why you're here after all, and why people subscribe. I'll contain my shock at finding negativity on the internet, and simply state the obvious: they're probably the vocal minority, and if people are still watching, it's because they're still interested. Not all opinions need to be the same.

Paul Norris

The moon the Mars team was on is Ganymede one of Jupiter's moons. It's an agricultural station, but more will be explained in the next few episodes.

Thomas Yanez

That covers the show from the very beginning, "... something happened, but we're not telling you specifically what, it will be explained later as the story unfolds". For some reason, in the context of "The Expanse" many people hate it.

Will someone please clue me in on what source we are using? My Amazon versions don't seem to sync, and ones I have downloaded have their problems too, never NOT been able to nail this down... but I am a bit bandwidth limited atm and just want to get to the right files..
