The Wire: Season 2 - Episode 3 - Patreon Version

Regarding the confusing part with Omar... he's reassuring his current paramour about his sexual proclivities vis-a-vis the two new females who've entered their universe.

JediLounger

I hope you guys had fun on vacation and are enjoying being back. I am sure you guys are aware, there is lots of craziness right now about language and content restrictions on YouTube. You guys have always been careful about this stuff, I guess be extra careful. Simone, don’t curse in those intros! lol.

I swear Episode 4 of Every Season is where all the different strings start to come together.

Nikodevious

"You know I don't bag no Babies", in this context means not attracted to women.

Skinny_Obelix

Boy will I be happy to see two episodes again, because it's hard holding out for a week to see the next one. I love this show.

Nikodevious

"The road to heaven is paved with bad intentions." Okay, that's pretty good.

In case it hasn't been brought up in comments yet, this seasons theme song is the original version of Way Down in the Hole by the king of gravel voice, Tom Waits.

I've now watched each episode twice: once in SD by myself a few days before your reaction, once in HD. It's cool to see how carefully the story is built and how the slow setup of the pieces is deliberate and is so cool when things start to connect. And it's so fun to see you guys get so invested! Can't wait for next week. Simone is right, Valchek was seen in season 1 but only briefly.

And this episode is so weird! The season has barely started and we get a scene like the one where McNulty meets Daniels in the evidence department that feels like what most shows would do in final episodes of the whole show. This weird pervasive sadness to it all, like the Tom Waits song in the intro.

The Wire is grounded in reality, but they do not always provide an explanation of what is shown, so let's look at what the problem is at the port of Baltimore. Since globalization means more import/export, you might think the port would be busier than ever. The problem is geography: Baltimore is 2/3 of the way up the Cheasapeake Bay, on the Patapsco River. That used to be an advantage - it put the port farther to the west, hundreds of miles closer to the major industrial cities in the "rust belt". The first commercial freight railroad in the US was the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, founded in 1830, which carried freight to and from the port and the farms and factories in the Midwest (If you've ever played "Monopoly", you may have "owned" the B&O Railroad). With the decline and relocation of heavy industry, that location is now a disadvantage. To reach Baltimore, ships sail right past the port of Norfolk, at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, and spend another day to reach Baltimore. Then when leaving, they have to spend a day backtracking down the bay, passing Norfolk again, to reach the ocean. For a lot of cargo, it is faster to just unload at Norfolk. To make access to Baltimore easier, the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal was built, so ships could travel directly north from Baltimore to Philly, NY and NJ, but the canal is not deep enough to handle the larger container ships now in use. What Frank is lobbying for is to have the C&D Canal deepened, allowing larger ships a more direct path to Baltimore, instead of unloading at Norfolk. Frank is not pocketing any of the cash from the Greek, he's using it to support the union efforts and the workers.

One of the great things about The Wire is that its characters are complex. They're not just stereotypical goodies and baddies. Even some of the most amoral characters have depths that show you a side to them that is surprising and relatable and make you like them, like Wee-Bay and his love of tropical fish or Rawls comforting Jimmy after Kima gets shot. Some of the best written characters on TV ever.

So no reacting to South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut, especially the scene where Mrs Broflovsky says "Horrific, deplorable violence is okay, as long as people don't say any naughty words!" because Youtube might ban you for irony.

Doc Frazier really is one of the most underrated characters on the show. God I fucking love this show so much. It's just so, so good. Glad to see George and Simone are still enjoying it as much as they are. As has been said in previous weeks, season two, when it originally aired, threw a lot of people off because it was such a jarring change from the first season. Oh, and also: let's be honest. Idris Elba has XXL energy, if you know what I mean.

Jeff K

Same. I could easily binge a full season of this show in a day -- and I say that as someone who has already seen every episode of the series multiple times. It's just like a great novel, when you get to the end of a chapter and just want to keep going.

Jeff K

For sure. I think you could probably lump episodes 3 and 4 each season together, as a kind of 2-parter that kicks things in motion.

"All Crime is Crime". And the first rule of the Tautology Club is the first rule of the Tautology Club.

Cash driver

you guys should watch "A Taxi Driver" its a really good true story.

Mithroch

Stringer dropping his cell phone stocks is maybe the second or third clue that he ain't as smart as he thinks. Being innovative in the drug trade is one thing... because he knows that business. But once he tries to play above the street... he shows a bit of naivety.

Nik

That's okay, I've never even heard of the show. lol

Martin

I’d like to make a humble suggestion: Once all 9 episodes of HBO’s upcoming “The Last Of Us” has aired, can you guys try to work it into your rotation like you did with “House of the Dragons?” This show is going to be epic.

Travis H

Not to bum everyone out, but Al Brown who played Valchek has died.
