Nathaniel Keen

Patrick has deep feelings about popular music, fashion, and culture. Human suffering doesn't affect him at all.

Nathaniel Keen

Very important detail: If it was all a dream, how did he have keys to the apartment at the end? He lets himself in.

about the music thing, to me, he cant actually relate to art. hes just rattling of some encyclopedic knowledge hes memorized. almost like hes reading them a review from an article. its because he doesnt actually have his own thoughts and feelings about it. theres no connection. he just read somewhere that this is the best and so in his mind it is. i think they also make this point with his awful dancing. he cant actually feel it. theres another bale movie worth watching, its called 'the machinist'. christian bale went from 173lbs to 110lbs. not much i can really say about the movie without spoiling it, just know that its not well known, but a really good movie with something to say about human suffering.

Friends help you move Real friends help you move bodies

I think the important thing to note about the music is that all the songs were top Billboard hits of the time, and his monologues read like little review blurbs that would accompany them.

In the book he absolutely committed all the murders, it was altered for the film adaption.

michael clarke

no, the book is ambiguous, the film is also supposed to be ambiguous as to if he committed the murders or not, however, the director said her intention was to film it as if it all happened and to just leave enough space to question. the author said that film isnt an appropriate medium for the story he was trying to tell because the nature of film demands answers. so the right answer is that there is no answer, but in terms of the film, she wants you to think its real, just not know for sure.

Rob Church

Willem Dafoe read is lines in 3 different ways: One where he was very suspicious of Patrick, One where he is neutral and One where he is convinced of his innocence, and then they mixed them all around so you could never quite figure out who had the upper hand in their conversations.

Ivana Trump was Trump's first wife. Remember this is set in the 80s

michael clarke

i cant remember where i read or watched, but theres a decent reading of this story where dorsia is heaven. that hes lashing out at a god that will never acknowledge him. also, the reason why all the name confusion is part of the authors thinking is that patrick isnt special in that crowd for being a psycho. he wants to think hes special, but the truth is, there isnt one of those people that for them murder is a bridge too far. hes only sank to those depths trying to find the next plateau to distinguish himself, but still remains unidentifiable amongst his peers.

Chris

This is one film where the book is infinitely better.

Capitalism is a person, I though capitalism was about the private ownership of capital, but ok.

Tay Schumaker

I read the book first and it seemed obvious he killed all of the people. The movie was trying too hard to blur the line and believe the director even said she didn't intend it to be so ambiguous. Others have gone through all of this in other comments

Jobbe Smit

On the names thing, the book as a project started serious. But as the writer hang out with this wallstreet types he was taken aback by the vapidness, the shallowness of their interactions. They all looked and acted interchangeably, there was no sincerity. So he started to rewrite it more while taking a piss at the culture. The fact nobody knows who he is, not even himself, is the pinnacle of this. The fact the murders happened or not is downright irrelevant because nobody knows who died. It might be Paul Allen and they mistook someone else for him in London. Or he was in London and someone else died. In the end nobody truly cared for Paul Allen because the culture is messed up.

Keep the homeless guy in mind when you continue watching The Wire. You'll see the actor -- the great Reg E. Cathey -- pop up in a pretty big role moving forward.

brian burke

fun facts for everyone , paul allen is jared leto the singer, and the woman christian bale stabs while in bed with her is guieneve turner, who is also the screenwriter of the movie. she gives a cool commentary on the dvd, its interesting and funny.
