Welcome back guys. Glad you had fun George, but Simone! Come, sit with us and tell us about the naps. Were they glorious? In regards to the movie, it’s pretty goofy. I would also check out Deep Impact. The two movies came out around two months apart, and there was a whole thing with ‘dueling apocalyptic movies’ that the media came up with. Personally I prefer Deep Impact, but they are both pretty fun.

Opti_Frog

Is this the first time Simone has been in an episode of CineCringe? 😄 Edit: I love what Jonathan Rosenbaum wrote about the movie in 1998: "It’s strictly a side issue whether mankind will survive colliding with an asteroid the size of Texas; the real question is whether [...] Bruce Willis’s daughter gets to keep her boyfriend."

Ben Affleck had this to say on the commentary track for Armageddon: "I asked Michael why it was easier to train oil drillers to become astronauts than it was to train astronauts to become oil drillers, and he told me to shut the f**k up," Affleck said. "So that was the end of that talk. [Does Michael Bay voice] 'You know, Ben, just shut up, OK? You know, this is a real plan.' I was like, 'You mean it’s a real plan at NASA to train oil drillers?' And he was like, 'Just shut your mouth!'" edit: I looked into the mental health in space thing and found this article (https://cmsw.mit.edu/angles/2019/headspace-how-space-travel-affects-astronaut-mental-health/) It's written by an aerospace engineering student, but it seems well researched. The short version is that messed up sleep schedules and cosmic radiation can mess with astronauts brains. The psychological problems that do crop up, however, are the same ones we'd see here on earth. The teams that they do send up get real life psych exams (probably not like the ones in the movie), and are hand selected for being able to work well together. The ISS medical kits have a variety of medications for psychological problems that may show up. Some studies actually show that astronauts can thrive in space due to the collaborative experience of trying to survive in wildly dangerous situations.

Tay Schumaker

The commentary on this is pretty amazing. Affleck tells a story about how he asked Michael Bay why wouldn’t they just train astronauts how to drill rather than send these guys up to space and he told him to shit the fuck up

MacGuffinStuff

Well originally the astronauts were all military pilots with years of training AS pilots (you guys should check out "The Right Stuff" btw), but after they introduced the shuttle they started sending up specialists, who also had years of training in their field. So it's apples and oranges, like, it's harder to train an apple to be an orange than it is to train an orange to be an orange in space. Does that make sense? Of course it doesn't, I'm trying to analyze a Michael Bay movie. Nevermind.

Jetofi

The scene with sheeps is from Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel.

Carlos Hurtado

this movie is over the top, cringey and fucking stupid at times, but I love it. Some of the explosions and miniatures looks really cool. The Russian is also from The Big Lebowski. He's the nihilist who doesn't care about anything.

Justin Wolford

The russian cosmanaut was played by peter stormare one of my favorite actors. He played lucifer in constatine and russian gangsters in both bad boys 2 and john wick 2. Also voiced multiple video game characters. He is amazing. My favorite part of this movie hands down. "American components, Russian Components, all made in Tiawan" 🤣🤣🤣

Ian Forbes

In a Michael Bay movie, if you ask “Why is everything exploding?” The answer is: Yes. And of course, in a Bay film, one should never take the science or believability of things into account. I was at a Comic-Con panel years ago about the science in science fiction movies & TV where different writers/producers of things like Eureka and The Expanse all said the movie with the worst science was Armageddon. It’s a fun movie but it also means a 2 1/2 brain nap.

Kevin Knadle

You are a great team. George says crazy stupid stuff and Someone says "JESUS GEORGE."

Michael Robayo

You guys must finish the Die Hard series and get to Die Hard with a Vengeance!

Odd Thomas

Michael Bay: "Instead of having two shots in this sequence, let's have ten" "But that would be really annoying in a 2.5hr movie and-" "DO IT!" (snorts coke off a model)

Odd Thomas

The only genuinely good Bay film is The Rock. It actually has a decent script and almost no CGI. And Sean Connery!

mpd

One of the most realistic depictions of space dementia ever put on film. As someone with a family history of space dementia, I can tell you, they got a lot of the small details spot on.

Opti_Frog

Swedish actor Peter Stormare. He also was Satan in Constantine, Steve Buscemi's partner in Fargo and Dieter Stark in The Lost World: Jurassic Park.

Thomas Yanez

Another example of you guys having the timing off on the embedded image - y'all are often reacting to things right before they happen. Not a deal breaker, but have to watch my video out of sync to keep your reactions at the right spot in my watch-along.

Odd Thomas

Some other great sci-fi movies: Sunshine (Michelle Yeoh! Danny Boyle! Chris Evans!) Event Horizon - The Shining in space Gravity - Alfonso Cuaron, nuff said

Jayson Phillips

you guys should try Coyote Ugly and Gone in 60 secs both by Jerry Bruckheimer also the Rock.

Thomas Yanez

I'm surprised George didn't comment on the multiple (I saw at least three) shots of silhouetted helicopters since he mentioned that it was a "known" Michael Bay thing.

Odd Thomas

I love how Peter Stormare has basically made a career out of playing Eccentric Russian Guy.

Jesus F Christ

I respect that everyone might have their own "good Michael Bay film" but lets be honest: they all suck. You can like one preparation of a shit sandwich more than others, but it is still a sandwich made of shit. See also: Roland Emmerich

Odd Thomas

Yeah I like both. Deep Impact is more of a 'real science' approach, as George put it

Michael Robayo

I've always enjoyed this movie and most of his earlier work. Yes, it can be cheesy and over the top, but this one at least has some good emotional moments. Unfortunately, his recent films aren't at this level at all.

Odd Thomas

As dumb as this movie is, when the little boy runs up to Will Patton at the end, I sob like... well like Simone basically

Martin

Simone and George have the rare ability to make otherwise terrible movies interesting just from their reactions. George spent the entire movie with his arms crossed, biting his lip to prevent himself from yelling, “Oh come on! This is ridiculous!” That being said, I’m kind of glad this movie won. Because it means it will never be on another poll. Two Michael Bay movies down. Only about 13 more to go until we are free.

Opti_Frog

Some great lo-fi sci-fi movies (that will never win any polls): Timecrimes Predestination Coherence Primer A Scanner Darkly Sound of My Voice

Brant

For a much more realistic movie about NASA, check out The Right Stuff.

Tanx

Yup that actor George was talking about was in Mass Effect. Keith David does a lot of voice over work and he just has such a recognizable voice. I don't even have to check imdb when I hear him on some random show or game to know it's him. Think he has been in hundreds of movies and games. off the top of my head he was Admiral Anderson in Mass Effect 1-3, the Arbiter in Halo, he was Mary's dad in Something About Mary, he was Goliath in Disney's Gargoyles, he was in The Chronicles of Riddick, he was Gus's Dad in Psych(a great show you should react to sometime), he did a voice for The Last Kids on Earth series on Netflix, but the first thing I remember him from was a comedy from the early 90s called Men at Work staring Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez where he played their crazy gruff supervisor(was basically the 3rd main character and was in 3/4 the movie). He played off both Charlie and Emilio really well. it's a really fun movie about 2 garbage men that end up getting caught in a big conspiracy.

Tim Pierce

I'm loving the Buffy reference.

Nate Terry

Quincy the smart guy who used the firecracker closed in your fist analogy you said looked familiar...that was jason isaacs. plays lucious Malfoy in Harry Potter.

BND

"I'm not supposed to take this movie seriously am I" George, it's a Michael Bay movie, what do you think? 😂

Jay

I didn't vote for Armageddon but when it won the poll, I said something like "it's a total mess but I kind of love it". By Michael Bay standards, this one is fairly entertaining with a great cast. That was my thinking but it's been a while since I've seen it. I had to turn off after 80 minutes. Even with lovely G &; S for company, it was close to unwatchable this time around. My head is sore and I can't believe I've been defending it here in recent weeks. Gonna suggest another, IMHO, far superior Bruce Willis movie - Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom:)

ChickensAreRacist

George I’m disappointed you didn’t mention how at the end it looked like Metroid. But maybe you’re not familiar with it, to which I’d say: Edit: I retract what I said

ChickensAreRacist

‘Space really hates landmarks’ lol damn that made us both laugh a lot

Gary Fixler

William Fichtner's last name is pronounced Fikt-ner.

pedantech

Can we get Abyss on a poll?

Wang Hongyuan

The castle with the sheep in front that Simone said she wants to go, I think that's the Mont-Saint-Michel in France? I didn't know there is such a beautiful place when I planned the trip to France but then after knowing this, I decided to replan everything, which is why that castle looks familiar to me, but I might be wrong too lol.

FranciscoGios

If I ever become a male stripper I will be called Horse Water for Simone

Com1xguy

I love this movie, but watching the space stuff now after seeing The Expanse, makes this look like a stop motion film.

Samuel Bruce

Deep Impact came out 6 months before this, very similar, not as Miechal "Bayish", be interesting to see which one ya guys like more.......

Martin Nicholls

Not for no reason, but the whole thing about training for years to be an astronaut is a bit nonsense, you just have to sit there and wait, it's not catastrophically complicated to sit in a seat. We've sent civilians to space with little to no training and they haven't dropped dead. OTOH, the whole just teach them to drill thing isn't so easy. The reason why astronauts train for years is that they have to be able to fulfil every role - they have to be pilots, they have to be scientists, they have to be PR people, they have to be medics, they have to be able to deal with any possible emergency and they're usually up there doing experiments all the time etc.

Matt

Haven't seen this for a while brings back memories, always loved these kinds of films as a kid you should check out FIRST MAN 2018 about Neil Armstrong if you want a more realistic space movie some time

Tyler Mckenzie

An asteroid will hit earth again. That is the only real thing about this movie. And we just need to be prepared.

Tyler Mckenzie

It takes 3 days to get to the moon. This movie is unrealistic.

Tax2er

You know it's science fiction? Doesn't have to be realistic.

Ricardo Alanis

Deep Impact is the more Contact-y version of this movie. More realistic and focused on the drama.

Steve H

A nearly exact copy of "Deep Impact" released about the same time.

Logan Kerlee

I've always preferred this over Deep Impact.

Logan Kerlee

lmao, it absolutely does! You gotta put your 90's brain on in order to fully enjoy this one. :)

Logan Kerlee

I'll always prefer this over Deep Impact. That movie doesn't have anywhere near the same level of emotional draw as this. Not only that - I just plain prefer the actors in this over that.

Haye Zeus

Yeah I couldn’t finish the reaction. The movie can be fun in places because of the actors and I remember enjoying it as a kid. But there’s too much Michael Bay shit in this, which bores me. Which is ironic cause he’s the most over the top director ever but I find his cinematography to be so ugly and drab to be exciting or engaging.

WayneC

11G at 22,500mph, which was shown in the movie, would be a radius less than the radius of the Moon.

JayF

Sigh. I didn't mind Liv Tyler being in those movies but the "horse water" moment was not her in the books at all. Elrond made the water, Gandalf added the horses. Plus it stole a really badass moment from Frodo because he was alone on the riverbank. “By Elbereth and Lúthien the Fair,' said Frodo with a last effort, lifting up his sword, 'you shall have neither the Ring nor me!” Link with more - http://www.henneth-annun.net/events_view.cfm?evid=1139 and, as I continue my nerd flex, here is the Bakshi version of that scene from the 1978 animated version of the movie - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKf-83NSigM&list=PLhoG7Tljmp9-dJCKVge1PGFTuYHla78AC&index=9

Fredrik H.K. Jensen

I would love a reaction to Deep Impact as well! It's a lot less dramatic and feels more grounded. Armageddon is an action movie. Deep Impact is Sci-fi. At least in my opinion :P

Anonymous

If I have one big problem with this movie it’s the editing. There are so many quick cuts in some scenes it’s ridiculous.

Cliché Guevara

Affleck's DVD commentary for this film is legend. He spends the whole thing pretty much tearing the movie apart, plot hole by plot hole...it's great.

Amelie W

That's not a minigun, it's a ballistic obstacle reductor haha no they really said that. It's in the making of videos or something. Supposedly NASA candidates have to watch this movie and point out all the scientific inaccuracies. They've found over 700. But it's not like the writers didn't know anything about anything, they just decided to have fun. One of the most hilarious parts they messed up was just due to a fact not very widely known at the time, though: They massively "underestimated" how destructive this kind of asteroid impact would be. Here ( https://i.imgur.com/J638LVx.png ) is a brief account of the Chicxulub impact seen at the start of the movie. The main takeaway is that it hit Earth so hard there is probably bits of dinosaur on the Moon.

McShades

It's a summer popcorn movie, of course it's not accurate. It's meant for fun, like a roller coaster ride. Spielberg did a asteroid movie at the same time "Deep Impact", but Armageddon beat it to the theaters.

hackbyte

Well .... coming not from drilling but from a nearly interesting part of the trade - special civil engineering - .... let me say, nowadays it is proven that it is way easier to grab any professional and take him or her trough a short training for the basic astronatic skills. They won't be perfect real early astronautic explorers ... but heck, they can learn to close their suits and do safety checks. Getting a professional scientist, aeronautic and astronautic trained person to learn a _completely_ different skill, far away from everything they ever had to bother with.... is a completely different game..... So yes, the overall solution to put as much of professional trained personel for each their roles together into a team, equipping some of them with actual urgent needed skills.... is IMHO totally viable.... ;) Don't forget, there were already some "lesser" men and women up in space ..... even if it was just for a short jump. )
