The Last of Us: Season 1 - Episode 2 & 3 - Patreon Version

Comments

Jeff K

I’ve been looking forward to your reaction to episode 3 since the show first popped up on that poll. Amazing episode of television.

Ginger

I'm very very slowly catching up on the show and just watched episode 3. My god, it's so good. I even love the changes they made compared to the game. Really interested to see your reaction now. Of course, first I'll have to download the video, load it in Premiere, speed it up to 104% and re-render, as my streaming service shows TLOU in PAL for some reason. x_x edit: Which doesn't work because the download is blocked - probably because the video is age restricted. :'( (Of course, there's always the "brute force" method of playing the whole thing once while capturing the screen and editing that. At this point I'm glad I asked the two for permission to download their videos for this purpose. ^^)

Marko T.

Can't wait to watch this. Episode 3 is amazing. Its very different to the game but I don't want to spoil how.

Pam Nail

It was Roger Ebert who said that "games cannot be art."

8bitAndy

This is a Patreon exclusive? YT is going gaga for this show rn. I hope a YT version gets uploaded at some point soon, for the views if nothing else.

Jeff K

What's interesting to me (and totally justified as far as I'm concerned), is that almost every single reaction I've seen to episode 3 from people who have played the game is that the changes are a pretty dramatic improvement over how the game played out. I would definitely agree. You still arrive at the same destination (Joel and Ellie getting a car), just with the journey altered, and the lesson Joel takes away from Bill is changed for the better IMO.

Professor00

Your upload doesn’t seem to be working. I hit play and it just gets stuck spinning indefinitely

Hi Folks, YT just now decided to mark this video as "18+ only" as soon as it started receiving some traffic, even though its not a published video. There's unfortunately nothing we can do to fix it immediately, as it doesnt actually tell us why it marked it as such. You cant even hear the audio or see 80% of the show as is but perhaps some gore or violence showed up in the tiny bit of visibility, or perhaps one of us swore too many times in quick succession. In any case, your best bet is to click through into the video onto YT itself, or via this URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5hots8CC1c we're submitting a review request but this usually takes 3-5 days and may result in a rejection since its still bot automated.

So the reason its stuck spinning is because YT just now decided to mark this video as "18+ only" as soon as it started receiving some traffic, even though its not a published video. On Desktop it will show it as "marked for 18+" There's unfortunately nothing we can do to fix it immediately, as it doesnt actually tell us why it marked it as such. Time is a weird soup is the perfect Ashley Johnson crossover to start my day. Thank you Simone.

Cinebinge

Okay we think it may be due to one or two of the zombie nipples slipping through in the middle section and as usual, AI doesnt understand context.

JediLounger

At the end of this part of the game, the outcome is the same (Joel and Ellie get a car), but how the player interacts with the story is completely different. I am glad you guys are enjoying the show. Prepare yourselves, its going to get wild.

Jeff K

Exactly. I made the same note in a reply above, but it's certainly worth repeating. Some game diehards were disappointed that they didn't get to see Bill and Ellie interact, but at the end of the day, Bill still serves almost exactly the same purpose here as he did in the game. You just go into his town looking for transportation and supplies, and that's exactly what you get both in the game, and in the show.

Kae

Yeah, Frank and Bill's story was completely different in the game. The show has made a few changes but I think this is the biggest one so far.

Jeff K

I forgot Frank came from the Baltimore QZ. “It’s gone.” Oh, McNulty, what the fuck did you do this time…

Tom H

Whiplash. Whiplash. Whiplash. Whiplash. Whiplash. Whiplash. Whiplash. Whiplash. Whiplash. Whiplash. Whiplash. Whiplash. Whiplash. Whiplash. Whiplash. Whiplash. Whiplash. Whiplash. Whiplash. Whiplash.

I had the same issue with their reactions of The Wire, which differed in format for me. One tip I got when trying to solve that, which has worked great for me, is to get an extension to your browser which will let you slow down, or speed up video streams. I'm using this one, https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/speedup-netflix-prime-vid/pldkddbkbcedophgedaeofceedjcaehl, for Chrome. And as of yet it has worked on all major video and streaming services. Hope it can help and save you some time.

AstralCars

Episode 3 is exactly like the video game. In the video game, the story stops for an hour to tell a gay love story and you had to sit there and watch it. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

michael clarke

if any ones interested in a good analysis/review of this episode, search "jessie gender last of us". two trans streamers explaining why this episode is so important, one of them often in tears. theres a reason why this broke the internet. there is officially before and after this show in terms of culture. literally the next day everyone was talking awards for this episode. the reason why its so important is because the media never tells a positive gay story. its always marked by tragedy. the game itself depicts the relationship as awful. theres a trope called "bury the gay", where they will kill a gay character. this episode was an intentional "fuck you" to all of that. it directly spit on the games portrayal. the entire thing was a defiance and subversion. the demand for this kind of story has been shown. will they respond, idk, but theres no going back now.

JokerDanny

The UK has been doing positive gay couple storylines for years, UK TV soaps like Brookside had the worlds first "before 9 o'clock" lesbian kiss. None of this is new yet the media presents it as groundbreaking to earn woke points.

Chase Schleich

In the game you meet Bill. He helps you get the battery. Frank and Bill were a couple (of sorts) in the game as well, but Frank had enough of Bill's shit and left. If I remember correctly, Frank was also after the truck battery that Bill thought was too dangerous to go after which caused the fight that made Frank leave to go try and get it on his own. You find notes from him throughout Bill's town until you and Bill eventually find Franks body. Bill is very similar in the game as he is in the show. He's a grumpy, untrusting, prepper who booby trapped the entire town. You spend the level trying to avoid the traps and using the traps to kill infected until you find Bill and convince him to help you retrieve the battery.

Chase Schleich

I really want to play this game again, but I want to play the updated version. I'm not paying $70 for it thought because I already bought the game twice (original version and remastered version). I'm waiting until the remake version goes on sale for dirt cheap then I'll play through it again.

Manuel Maslog

Bill’s character was a crucial part in Joel’s arc, it set the way for Joel to open up to love and car for others. The game made Bill an untrusting loner who didn’t want to open up to love and Joel didn’t want to be that. But in the show, Bill advised Joel to open up to love. Both game and show had the same effect.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Whew, this is like my fifth time watching this episode (literally every one of the reaction channels I patronize is watching this show now lol, Cinebinge and Popcorn were the last to start), still gets me, so damn good. What a story, I love that they chose to do this episode and that, for the most part, it's been well received as far as I can tell (obviously some people were going to have a problem with it but so well). Not gonna lie I also get a little emotional because my parents loved Linda Ronstadt, my mom especially, particularly her album of Mariachi songs. Linda Ronstadt's father was Mexican, and her voice was really perfect for Mariachi, it was so powerful. Sadly she's no longer able to sing as a result of a medical condition similar to Parkinson's. A lot of people have said she only made that album to cash in on her ethnicity after her mainstream career stalled but I don't care, the album is fantastic and she introduced a lot of people to that music and those great traditional songs. Sorry, got off on a tangent there, but yeah, so loved the way the episode ended with that shot through the bedroom window and "Long, long time" playing, just beautiful. Now I'm gonna go listen to some Linda Ronstadt and cry into my chips and salsa some more lol

Skinny_Obelix

In the game you meet Bill, but his relationship with Frank is implied through notes, you never meet Frank. The relationship between the two in the game ended as Bill wasn't willing to make compromises on his "survivalist" lifestyle so they broke up. Frank got infected and eventually killed himself leaving a suicide note where he said he hated Bill. So they took the approach of love in stead of hate in this episode. Which was infinitely better than what the game did.

Jim Frykman

Fantastic reaction, folks! Was really looking forward to the episode 3 reaction and was not let down!

Tenn Seven

It was Roger Ebert who once said "games can never be art." Brilliant man, but he had never played video games. He later said that he would "never express an opinion on a movie [he] hadn't seen," and although he still didn't believe games were art he "should never have said so."

Jim Frykman

I wonder if Ebert ever had a conversation with Steven Spielberg about this. Spielberg was an early proponent of storytelling through video games and he remains so today.

Martin

I got all emotional again last night while watching Simone and George get emotional watching episode 3. And now I’m going to have that Linda Ronstadt song in my head for the rest of the week.

Odd Thomas

This was the 5th reaction I've watched & still when Ron Swanson starts crying, it's all over.

Marko T.

Gustavo Santaolalla and David Fleming are making the soundtrack. I'm glad Santaolalla is involved because he also did it for the game.

Derik Knutson

Well you should know that neither Bill or Frank are going to kill the other since the show has made sure to tell us on multiple occasions that Joel and Tess are friends with them and going to see them. Like Bill and Frank were mentioned on multiple occasions....

Rando

I can’t play this for some reason lol. Other eps work fine but this just won’t start

David Weinstein

At ep 2, 16:55 .. "So maybe it was filmed in Alberta.."

Madelyn Blaze

I knew these two would be okay with this show, but I was really worried about Cassie from Popcorn in Bed watching it because she's so tender hearted.

Bobby Powell

This show is so amazing. It might be the best tv I've seen in 10 years.

Darrell B.

Honestly became a patreon just to check out this reaction... Now to check out some other stuff..

William Moffett

Episode 3 is absolute perfection. Probably one of the best episodes in dramatic TV history.

DG

These won’t play for me?

Cinebinge

hi DG, since YT age restricted these videos for some reason, you will need to click through them and watch the video on YT itself rather than on Patreon. age restricted content can only be viewed on YT itself.

Tay Schumaker

Randomly started watching this again since the remaster came out and this one won’t start in the Patreon app. Every other video starts fine, but for some reason eps 2&3 won’t Looks like it’s because of the age restriction. If you go through the Patreon website you’ll get the age restriction error and click here to watch on YouTube. But in the app it just spins forever. Just a heads up if anyone else comes across this layer and has the same issue

Jesse Westerfield

How do you go through yt to watch? I’ve seen your comments to other people about not being able to watch through Patreon but I don’t know how to access it through YouTube without going through Patreon.

Cinebinge

Hi Jesse, so when this page loads up on desktop browser, it will say that it is age restricted and only available on youtube. below that are the text "Watch on YouTube" underlined. click on that and it will open up to the YT page.

Kevin Morris

Watching this first time. The Bill and Frank story was a beautiful love story. imo this ep is much more thought-provoking than just the beauty of their love for one another. i thought it was also pretty heavily referencing the wealth gap in modern society, which is gross (recall how many times we were shown the "gate" to their "community"). Cut off from the world with only one person to talk to - were they really as fat and happy as they seemed? Better than being alone, but would that existence still take a toll eventually? And if they were that fat and happy, is that to be celebrated in the face of so much pain, oppression, and suffering? Idk the answers, but I was a little disappointed that the reaction/discussion was so surface level. That's Ok though - have a nice day.

Kacey Keel

Hey team. Recent Cinephile subscriber. You guys made me get Patreon! Yay! (Seriously, thanks for making content.) But anyway, this video is giving me a little trouble playing in the Patreon mobile app. I would try desktop but I want to cast to my tv from mobile if possible. Any tips to get it to play? Thank you! 😁

Cinebinge

Hi Kacey, welcome! So all our videos posted on Patreon are actually just links to YT. Some get age restricted by YT, so when you click play it will say it's only available on YT. But underneath that statement there should be a line that says Watch on YouTube. Clicking that will open the video on the YouTube app itself, and that in turn can be casted onto a tv. Hope that helps!

Pat Poling

One of the very best episodes of television ever. Bill saved Frank and protected him.....but it was Frank who saved Bill, in every way that you can be saved. Simone, thank you for sharing your reaction, just wonderful.

pinkdino99

ep03.. one of the best TV episodes ever made. I loved Bill's little squeal of delight when he eats the strawberry.

judith Cure

I can’t even get the video to play on my phone, so it won’t even give me the only available on YouTube message. Any ideas?

Miles

the link is broken i guess ? or is it just me ?

RuinFox

the no sync required version kinda seems like its out of sync. the reaction audio is ahead of the show on screen by maybe a second? episode 2 i mean, havent made it to episode 3 but im switching to the sync copy i n the mean time.
