Jay Davis

I wonder when they'll do The Wire Season 3. Hmm.

Jeff K

I'm not convinced they'll ever return to it, sadly. If only they'd give us some indication.

Fuzzy Dunlop

Season 3 of The Wire is so good.

Jihad Lee

So Season 3 of The Wire next week? Are you sure?🤔🤔🤔

Ginger

But what about The Wire?

G P

You guys should check out The Wire, great show

sarCC

So...anything happening next week?

Jay

I already knew we were going back to B-more next week but still, happy to see comprehensive confirmation. I've been scratching my Wire itch watching clips/interviews that came out last year for the 20th anniversary. Good stuff for Wireistas (not you though G & S, spoilers!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQAQYnu4k50

Daniel Popp

The actor who plays James, the right hand man of David, is the voice and performance capture actor for Joel in the games, Troy Baker. The actress who plays Ellies mom at the start of the season finale is Ashley Johnson, the voice of Ellie in the games. Really love how they tried to include as much of the cast from the games in the show.

Haye Zeus

So next week ya’ll gonna do all 12 seasons of NYPD Blue right?

Marko T.

Can't wait to watch this. My favorite episodes are 3, 6 and 9.

Jeff K

Yep. And one of the main characters (Abby) from the second game is one of the nurses in the OR in episode 9. And obviously, the voice of Tommy back in the KC episodes, and Marlene being played by the same actress from the game.

MikeBdrx

There’s no way they make a cure anyway in that janky hospital. So she probably would have died for nothing. I would have did exactly what Joel did. Marlene would have kept coming after her. It’s not like the firefly’s were the best people anyway. He did leave the nurses alive remember that? Anyway it followed the game pretty closely. And ended exactly the same. Part two of the game is just as good I thought as the first game. Also on a side note, and don’t feel obligated to answer but, when are y’all doing The Wire Season 3

Marko T.

PC version of the game gets released today.

Gath Bard

In the end it's about both Marlene and Joel making choices for Ellie. I think the only reason that makes the whole thing "unfair/gross" is that nobody (as far as we know) is telling Ellie what's going on. Yes, they could both force her to do the opposite of what she would choose, but it would be all out in the open, and there's a fundamental truth in that, a form of honesty. Ellie had every chance to turn back if she wanted, even right before they get taken in, yet she kept going because she knew she could save the whole world. The least they could do is being honest about killing her in order to develop a cure. Now, this is said from a viewer's perspective. In reality they would've started working the cure (rip Ellie), killed Joel on the spot (rip Joel) and MAYBE make up a nice background on how Ellie's noble choice saved the world to feed to the masses of the newly built society of the future.

Jeff K

I wish I could find it, but yeah, I saw an article shortly after the finale aired where members of the scientific and medical communities weighed in and were like, "Yeah, no, it almost certainly wouldn't have worked."

Jayson Phillips

Penicillin can be shot anywhere, it works faster at the wound site tho. Ironic tho he got better from Mold, fungus in this world lol

Daniel Popp

"I guess they're having meatloaf tonight because he's minced." Jesus tap dancing Christ, George 🤦‍♂️🤣

Jayson Phillips

But Ellie was hit hard by Sam so she would want to save the other Sams out there!

mojo shivers

Every time I see this episode the sign for the cult always looks like the Chik Fil-A Cows wrote it. And I always think they’re really behind the cult.

Shane Leslie

I've always taken Ellie's last 'okay' as the moment she lost trust in Joel. She KNOWS he's lying, she's given him a last out to tell the truth and he lies straight to her face. The only person in the entire world she trusts and he lies while looking her in the eyes. 'Okay, I can never trust anyone again.'

Jeff K

Apparently, that's Ashley Johnson (the woman who played Ellie's mom in the show and voiced Ellie in the games, for those unaware) take as well. So, the original Ellie agrees with you. I don't think Druckmann has ever confirmed she's right, though, which is why I don't consider this a spoiler.

JediLounger

I look forward to hearing what you thought of the game Simone, and I encourage you to find a way to play the second one.

Red Freckle

"I think that there's a right way and a wrong way to participate in cannibalism." - Simone

Pk

hmm, I picked up part 2 for like $9 for PS4, but was waiting until I got part 1 at a good deal to start there, but maybe paying full price to pay on PC is where I will land, but frankly my gaming setup is just mildly above the min req'd, so unless its an amazing port, I will probably stick with console for this one too. Still haven't decided on playing/watching first... Probably watch if it doesn't spoil the game

TGrimace

Episode 8: Joel up and walking around? That's a man that is purely fueled by rage and adrenaline.

Joey Johansen

anyone know if they will ever get back to the wire show?

JoshG

I’m absolutely on Team Joel. 1. The possibility of a cure is exactly that, a possibility. Even IF it did work, a cure couldn’t change zombies that are already turned. It would just prevent them from turning in the future. And like Tess said in episode 2, “you can still be ripped apart” 2. I’m not saying what Joel did was right, but the man was clearly experiencing PTSD, and panic attacks throughout the show, it makes sense he would do whatever it took to make sure the first person he’s loved since his daughter was safe. Also this is just me brainstorming different possibilities, but just cause that doctor died, doesn’t mean there’s nobody else left who could do that. I would assume it could still happen even if Ellie were older.

Persnickity

Not even bringing human meat (they called it long pork in the second pirates movie and historically) into the equation could you kill a cow for a burger? Or a chicken for its fingers

Jeb Manning

Definitely soon I'd love to see you guys react to the original 80's Transformers cartoon. I know it's a goofy 1980's cartoon but I think it'd be a lot of fun. Plus, once you get past the second season, you could react to the 1986 Transformers movie. Parts of Bumblebee will also be cooler if you've seen the show too.

Eric Mc Daniel

Are you ever gonna tell us when you are going to do The Wire Season 3?

UNC

I am begging you two to PLEASE go from Season 3 right into Season 4 of the Wire, one of the best seasons of television ever! Cinebinge not Cinewwait for 6 weeks lol <3

Michael Kang-Beats

the fireflies are so incompetent they can't even cover baby Ellie's ears.

Jeff K

The “main” giraffe was in fact real. The herd was CGI. But when Bella Ramsey was feeding the giraffe, she was feeding a real one.

Michael Kang-Beats

It's not tricky. This is one doctor's pipe dream. The fireflies are incompetent. How are they going to mass produce, mass distribute and keep any *possible* vaccine secure? How are they going to store it? How do they convince people to take it? You couldn't tell Ellie she's saving humanity. That would also be a lie. The Fireflies have failed at everything. Even keeping their star doctor safe.

Odd Thomas

Literally the first scene in Ep 1: Doctor: "There is no cure. There is no vaccine" (drops mic) The vaccine isn't even the real issue; it's that he lied to Ellie. For a good reason, he loves her and doesn't want her to die, but it's a serious breach of trust. That's the crux of the matter. The saving the world/vaccine thing is just the Macguffin.

Tmatts

It is always possible for science to discover a solution to something they previously thought wasn't possible. So I'm still of the mind that, in all likelihood the vaccine isn't possible, but there's a slight chance they could discover something/figure it out. But as you said, the breach of trust is the more important issue.

Joey Johansen

'look for another answer' it's been 20+ years, and they mention people have tried before, Joel I think immediately upon being told about Ellie dismisses it because of going through hearing about a 'cure' before and it failing or not coming to fruition. Also the lying, I mean Joel is/was a broken soul who for the past 20 years ran with Tess and his brother and that group while they all did horrific things to survive. He's had to be numb for a huge chunk of that time, only recently with Ellie he has awoken to something other than pushing through time without thinking, and during his turn in the hospital he is brought back into his numb mechanical way of thinking to get through to something stronger than what he had before, he sees Ellie at as his light as he is lost in the darkness. He will lye the same way he will kill to survive, at this point it comes easy because everything he has to do comes without thought if it means he can be with Ellie etc. That's the terrible beauty in this story, showing how strong love and be. Having played the games a few times and watched many reactions to the games and the show now I cannot wait to see the next game given life in the show, so many parts of this first season just like the game is continued in the later sections amazingly. The camera lingers on the doctor Joel kills, The voyeur girl in Jackson, Tommy and his rifle and claims of long distance shooting. So many things are already memories for the characters to revisit in the future etc.

Tay Schumaker

They were sort of at a last resort, the thing you saw was the horse they’d just killed, and they said they had around two weeks left of food. They were supplementing what they had left with human meat. Not saying anything either way, but it’s not like they were just skipping all the food they had to eat people. They were running low on everything

Chris Adams

I watched a doctor react to the Fireflies plan and he was shocked at how bad it was. They should have started by drawing her blood first and surgery was the dumbest thing they could have done.

Joey Johansen

Yea I think its easily fine to call them still not evil if they continue to finish the people eating if they get a deer and horse, again that group is huge and can probably go through 3 people a deer and a horse in a short enough time to still be desperate for even more food. So it kinda doesn';t matter if they ever get 'enough' food because unless they find a source that is sustainable, which they hadn't, they will always been in survival mode when it comes to food. No farming, it's dead of winter so even hunting you probably cannot find enough to last a few days or even a day without being forced to hunter and find something every single day, which is incredibly hard. The whole power/control complex of David and his joy when he interacts with Ellie though, that's definitely just straight up icky.

Skinny_Obelix

It would also be cruel to put the fate of the world on the shoulders of a teenager by asking her to kill herself. There's no good outcome, so you save the world... I completely understand what Joel did, but giving her the choice isn't a better solution.

Joey Johansen

'just cause that doctor died, doesn’t mean there’s nobody else left who could do that. I would assume it could still happen even if Ellie were older. ' possible but incredibly unlikely to have a skilled doctor capable of brain surgery to have survived 20+ years, I assume almost no one is being trained after the outbreak on the skills needed so it's just 'whatever is left' it's just 'the last of them'. It's a pretty dire situation and I take it as pretty final how the events go down that they could definitely have gotten something of value from Ellie and that the changes after all the carnage in the hospital is brought back down to almost zero. Either way the later events in the story talk about exactly this, which I think is what I love about the games/show the most is it isn't like other things where things are progressed on and forgotten. The whole thing with the last of us, is this story that gets explored so deeply, every action, every moment is given time to breath and gets expounded on and we see the growth of so many characters through their actions. It's like seeing the bad guys perspective but then seeing them have like 2-5 moments of change and growth together with the good guys, and it mixes up and flips around and it becomes this terribly sad soup where you care about every piece and are sad for every piece.

Joey Johansen

that is definitely a thing for sure, I felt so sad for the baby. Maybe that was intentional, showing how ellie from the start was alone with no one to shelter her. if she was sheltered from the sound she might not have been crying which wouldn't have been so heartbreaking, and I think if anything this whole series of games and show is ALL ABOUT breaking your heart.

Joey Johansen

There's like some moldy stuff on it's head, could be cgi or a cute wig, would love to see if they shot any behind the scenes to see the extent of the world building too. So much of what goes into video games is intense world building, like hand crafting environments is a huge deal in games and I feel like they didn't just make great sets in this tv show but they took the same ideology of how much effort when into the games environment design and purposefully focused on that for the show as well.

Grand Moff Slackin'

I would definitely eat fellow Cinebitches. I bet they’d taste of donuts. 🍩

Alex Ch

George, have you considered creating a Letterboxd account for the channel? You could mark the movies you’ve seen off channel so we would know not to waste our time asking for. It would also be fun to track the channels progress there.

Tanx

always wondered if Ellie had kids if they would be immune. I mean, without some kind of test, the only way to know would be if she had kids and they were all bit by infected without getting ripped to pieces.

M H

I feel the same way as George does. IF you believe sacrificing a child’s life to possibly save millions is justified, then you can also justify disregarding Ellie’s “consent to die” and telling her a “white” lie before killing her. I think taking the child’s life with or without the child’s “consent” is a bigger deal than being dishonest with her before killing her. So, I think Marlene’s decision to sacrifice honesty and kill Ellie without causing her distress is consistent with her utilitarian belief that justifies sacrificing Ellie.

Lock_Down

whats "Next week will be The Wire Season 3" all about lolz ??

Anthony Fontana

I just wish we would get a concrete answer on what they will be watching next week, and when season 3 of The Wire is coming, y'know? :/

john blake

George’s meatloaf joke was epic!

Caturday Nite

That ending, the look on your faces when Joel lies. Priceless. Also, I am making a meatloaf while watching this. But it is chicken, beef, and pork. No human.

Ana Fox

They had been looking for a cure for a long time, but Marlene hadn't been looking for a vaccine based on Ellie's immunity since she was born. Anna lied to protect Ellie, so Marlene only realized she was immune after Ellie and Riley got bit at the mall. That's why I think sacrificing Ellie is a rushed decision. They had never encountered an immune person before. Betting it all on a procedure that will kill her is a huge risk. Also, I love Ellie, so no! lol

FranciscoGios

Yeah I don’t agree why Joel lied to Ellie it takes the protective dad mode away. And Camelopard Burgers sound good on a Pre-Apocalyptic Menu, not a fan just taking some notes from this finale.

Brendan Rafferty

In the reality of this show, it is implied that Cordyceps fungi adapted to be able to survive inside a host body temperature above 96 degrees.... a threat pointed out in episode one. Humans have an average body temperature of 98.6 So, following the logic that the fungus adapted to survive in a host a few degrees warmer than its previous threshold for survival... The answer to defeating infection seems obvious. The show establishes that once bitten, the fungus starts to slowly grow in the brain. So the solution would seem simple... If someone is bitten, medically induce a fever, raising the body temperature to 103 to kill the cordyceps before it can grow

Shibby

They have to space it out because not everyone wants to see The Wire, so having other shows in between seasons provides something for everyone.

Odd Thomas

Pet peeve: "Ashley Johnson did the voice in the game". No, she did the whole acting gig in motion capture suit. Every jump, every inflection. She didn't just spend a day in a recording booth. Just fyi.

Alan Kobb

When are you doing The Wire Season 3????

Brant

Throwing out a suggestion for the HBO limited series Station Eleven. It’s another post-apocalyptic show, but with a much greater focus on civilization, art, and the redeeming aspects of humanity. It’s a really amazing series, and would make a great reaction.

Marko T.

I hope you play the game and upload it to Youtube. Would be interesting to see someone playing it for the first time after watching the show.

Marko T.

Its very easy to get spoiled about the second game on Youtube. There are a lot of videos with spoiler names and thumbnails.

Derik Knutson

Neither of them really seem to care about or notice the trauma Ellie went through. That's why she was acting the way she was at the very end of 8 and the beginning of 9.

Travis

George picked an interesting place for his pro cannibalism thought experiment 😅

Travis

George too busy dreaming of scenarios where he could eat people

Torsten Maekler

Simone is exactly on point. The problem with both sides is, that neither asked what Ellie wanted. Just take the time, talk to her, and let her decide. Joel and Marlene decided for her - either way. Just let her decide for herself. And all of the bloodshed could have been spared... . And I write this especially from the point of knowing what happens down the line in Game 2. PS: Simone, you identified Ashley Johnson. Did you see Laura Bailey?

Marko T.

They might start filming season 2 this year. Reports say that they film in Vancouver.

Josh

You would let a child decide whether they will die or not🤨

Aaron Gunstone

I agree it's consistent. But then I also feel that resisting with any force necessary the murdering of children - whatever the benefit - is also justified.

Chris B

OMG. I know this is an old comment but this is a pet pieve of mine too and I see/ hear it all the time. "Hey. that's the girl who did the voice in the game" seems like a huge underappreciation to me. (not directed at Simone as she hasn't played the game but the thousands of gameplayers that comment this on YT ;)

Lazy Boy Stays Up Late Watching Video Tapes

So in the Game, last convo, she was not taking the blame for those deaths. In the game, after she says "...and lose our minds together." she goes on to say, "..and I'm still waiting for my turn" [My turn to die].

Hayk Martirosyan

Joel is actually the villain of this episode, and not only because he kills innocent people. The writers have already given us information that he has previously done horrible things. He does the most egocentric thing in the world. Yes, Marilyn should have asked Ellie. It's kind of like she made a decision about Ellie's life without her knowledge. But the same goes for Joel, so that's not the point. In my opinion, the point is that after episode 6 when Joel decides to go with Ellie instead of Tommy, you can see a change in their relationship. Joel eases his pain by kind of replacing Ellie with his daughter. Joel's decision is the most egocentric because he did it for himself. He didn't want to lose again because he finally found happiness and didn't want to sacrifice it. Of course, Ellie would choose to die. From episode to episode, Ellie develops as a character. She believes that many people die because of her, but at least for a good reason. She kind of pays back by saving mankind. When Joel asks her about going to Tommy's place, her reply shows that after everything they've been through, her goal is to finish this mission, no matter what.

Noe Ramirez

Joel in the game is a-lot more brutal and heartless. He was sort of softened for this show, but these last two episodes really showcase how brutal he is closer to what he was in the game.

FatLittleButterfly

No one can convince me that Joel was the villain in this. They want to paint the grand idea that the Firefly could actually come up with a "cure" if Ellie sacrificed herself. Firstly, that quack doctor first step is not to perform more testing before deciding to kill their ONLY subject who is immune? Secondly, even if they were right, they are not going to have the capabilities to cultivate and distribute said cure Lastly, Even with the "cure" they can still die from massive horde such as the one encountered in episode 5. At this point, they are better off rebuilding society and trying to get more Ellie descendants. Killing an innocent and completely healthy girl for the sake of giving yourself false hope? The fireflies are the villains.

Rufus May

You're rationalizing an interpretation that isn't part of the story's narrative.

Terry Yelmene

I just caught up through this series reactions and you two were phenomenal. Great stuff!

Ian Hunt

Was due a rewatch so watched along with you. Last of Us is in my top 5 favourite games of all time - i remember when ellie says that last line thinking it was such s perfect, “grey” ending and was fascinating listening to the two of you debating it!

BigCityTerry

"There's no half-way with this. After all the things I've done, it can't be for nothing." -- Ellie

Kyle hainnu

I'm a inuk for Nunavut but I went out with my dad and we got stranded so he somewhat offered himself for me to keep going on

Patrick

Can't believe we have to wait until well into 2025 for the next season. With the writer's strike, 2024 is just going to be absolutely horrible for tv/movies.

Angela D. Mitchell

I loved the show, and thanks for this fun rewatch with your reactions! I loved the finale for what it was trying to say about the toxicity of love, but the medical aspect did bother me. There is no reason in the world that any sane doctor or scientist would IMMEDIATELY kill the one immune person they've found. There would be -- at the very least -- months of testing, plus investigation of aspects like much less invasive microscopic spinal/brain biopsies, etc., versus killing the golden goose that has their one chance for a cure. I get why the game and show did it this way -- so that Joel would have to make that brutal choice -- but it's not remotely realistic from a scientific or medical standpoint. The moment Marlene said, "He THINKS it could be a cure," I rolled my eyes. They're going to kill Ellie -- within hours, and with minimal testing -- for a "could be?" No way. Still, that wasn't the point of the story, and I do get that. Beautiful acting from everyone involved -- terrific season of TV. And it was great to see Ashley as Anna in the beginning -- and Laura Bailey as one of the nurses!

rafermadness

Great games, great show. Important context from the writers: 1) It is 100% a cure, not an argument; 2) Ellie says in both the game & the show that she's willing to die for this; 3) Joel is the bad guy. That's where the discussion begins. He can be the bad guy AND you can understand why he did the bad thing. It's the complexity of real life.

pinkdino99

You should watch the South Park - Alive movie parody.

Cory Garron

Just binge-watched your S1 episodes today. So, are you going to do The Wire Season 3 next? /sarcasm
