Great movie. They are watching the directors cut. You should also check out the Netflix show Fincher made about this kind of material. Mindhunters (2017) only got two seasons, but it’s worth watching. Edit: Dirty Harry is a real series of movies, they made five of them. The first one 'drew inspiration' from the Zodiac investigation. If you guys want to watch boiler plate police investigation movies from the 70's and 80's they would be the classic example.

The only downside about all these reaction channels watching directors cuts and special editions is they tend to not be available on subscription streaming services. So you better hope you already own it or you're stuck with renting/buying just to watch along. I have the directors cut on HD-DVD, but having trouble ripping it (I do have a drive that can read it). The disc is probably goofed up like a lot of old HD-DVD's.

I KNEW Simone was accidentally British all along!

Glad you grabbed the directors cut. Haven’t watched this in a while so looking forward to revisiting. It’s so good

AdNoctumLoki .

one of my favorite movies, glad you liked it too. I'd love to see you guys react to Bonecollector.

Fincher is one of my all time favorites. The Social Network, Panic Room, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo are great as well.

I saw this in theaters when it came out and I like it more every time I rewatch it. The first time I saw it I thought it was okay but I missed the point of the movie. It’s not about the killer, the movie is about all the people around the events and what trying to know the unknowable (too many clues, misleads) does to people. And as always, just watching a David Finch movie is beautiful to enjoy.

I recently watched the film "Boston Strangler" starring Keira Knightly, and released earlier this year. It follows the reporters that made the connections between murders in 60ston in the late 1960s. That, and other, true crime films could be worth watching - Summer of Sam, The Night Stalker, From Hell (a Jack the Ripper film).

PIG

Recommending 'The Game' (1997) by David Fincher. It's all about puzzles so Simone should love it and it's one of the best thrillers out there.

This is my favorite David Fincher movie. Having a favorite serial killer is just gross. That said, I read Robert Graysmith's book when I was in high school lol This movie is heavily based on that book and leans on Arthur Leigh Allen as the sole killer, but it's one of those true stories that gets more complicated the more details you learn. "This is the Zodiac speaking" is one of a ton of interesting docs on YT, there are interviews of the survivors in some. Mike Mageau was a mess, barely coherent, but the Lake Berryessa survivor Brian Hartnell was lucid and he watched this movie, he said the way the scene was shot in which he and Cecilia Shepherd were stabbed was totally accurate. I couldn't get the director's cut, but I heard mentioned the Son of Sam murders while I paused. So I have to recommend Spike Lee's "Summer of Sam", which I have to warn you is not actually that much about the Son of Sam, well it kind of is... Anyway it's an interesting movie. Oh I forgot to mention this movie ends in my home town, Ontario, I grew up about two miles from that airport.

I don't think they can actually watch a Keira Knightly movie now after all the jokes.

micah saldana

if your in the mood for another thriller, i suggest Prisoners, it also stars Jake Gyllenhaal, and also Hugh Jackman. Very suspenseful. I think its actually on Netflix still. And he actually plays a cop in this movie LOL

Tay Schumaker

The handwriting guy wasn’t saying he wasn’t ambidextrous, he was saying even with ambidextrous people the handwriting is still similar. And that the handwriting was not a match so that’s why they couldn’t get the warrant

Odd Thomas

Noice. Please watch Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - another amazing mystery/detective movie. It's so much better than the original Swedish version, which was basically a TV movie.

Brant

For another great mystery/crime/detective movie from David Fincher that isn’t true crime, check out The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011).

Ricardo Alanis

Definitely agree with The Game and also Gone Girl as other films to watch.

Tay Schumaker

The movie paints a compelling case that it was Allen, because it’s based on Graysmith’s book and that’s who he was convinced did it. There is plenty of evidence that it wasn’t Allen. His dna didn’t match the letter, none of his handwriting matched. An alleged witness said Allen was much heavier than the guy he saw. Someone said his voice was different. It’s not so cut and dry. If you look in to it there are a ton of possible suspects

JLee

Bong Joon-ho's Memories of Murder is a great film, similar to Zodiac in spirit and subject.

Logan Kerlee

Glad that you both watched this. It's a very dark movie but it's worth watching for sure. Not something to be enjoyed but something to watch and maybe reflect on. Zodiac was fucking terrifying. We've definitely progressed and developed with our investigating skills since this all took place! George you're great! xD David Fincher is amazing, yeah. Everything he touches is super interesting and usually thought provoking. That show that you mentioned is TOTALLY worth watching! That stabbing was definitely scary! Creeped me out big time! This sort of movie - not showing the villain AT ALL throughout is a super cool way of doing it. Films that display the character are usually more scary than this but I feel that this was VERY creepy. Not my first time watching this but I'm glad that I was able to watch it with you both.

FranciscoGios

Yeah, the real Zodiac Killer was never brought into justice. The Lee guy was the Zodiac according to Jake Gyllenhaal’s character, the guy who wrote the book.

Bennett Holleman

Dirty Harry greatly influenced and popularized the genre of cop movies. I think that whole series is worth watching.

My grandfather had Pong when I was a little kid. It was the first video game I played.

Big.Bad.Mr.Mustard

Once again, I have to recommend Prisoners(2013) an awesome crime/mystery drama. Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal, plus it's directed by Denis Villeneuve! You can't go wrong.

JayF

Simone, I will second George's endorsement of Mindhunter. It's a great show that unfortunately didn't capture enough of an audience and was cancelled after 2 seasons.

Jester

I'm going to join the others in this thread in recommending both Prisoners and Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. One of the things I love about Zodiac is that there is so much information presented but it never feels overwhelming as a viewer. I had a similar feeling with Dragon Tattoo where again there's so much detail but it's presented in a way where you can still absorb it all.

Update: there is a new, well 2024, Netflix Docuseries called "This is the Zodiac Speaking" that I can recommend to S&G and all fellow Cinebingers. It really shows how bad people use vulnerable folks to perpetrate/groom/cover up for their crimes and alibis... in this case Arthur Lee Allen using the Seawater family as such. Most of us left this Fincher movie certain that Aurthur Leigh Allen was the Zodiac. I would consider this a "parallel" and an "update" at the same time. I think you will too. Indeed, watching the Netflix show sent me back to watching your reaction with you a second time, after seeing the theatrical release in 2007, after which I've found myself following each new tidbit. "This is the Zodiac Speaking" is pretty thorough and includes many interviews with the current (oldish) Robert Graysmith. FWIW: $0.02.
