The Wire: Season 3 - Episode 9 & 10 - Patreon Version

Comments

Jay Davis

The malaise is starting to set in that there's only one more week of the wire after this (for now)! Thank god for day drinking then, eh?

Stu84

Man, i remember watching your guys reaction to Prez in season 1 and how much you hated him. The character development in this show is soo good. Carver is the same, when Bunny gives him that great speech you can see him starting to understand. With Herk going the opposite direction, he just sees policing as beating on people and wants to go back to that. Can't wait for you guys to eventually get to Season 4 (the golden season).

Man, for as much as every season of The Wire takes the time to set up all of the characters and plot lines, once everything is established… hoo boy does the show know how to bring the goods when it comes to paying everything off. What a brilliantly written show.

Brian Harris

Worth noting that David Simon is on record as saying that he treated every season of The Wire like it was the last. And the third season almost was, they renewed it for the fourth season very late. HBO never had a ton of faith in it.

redddfer44

Fun tidbit: when McNulty goes on about the actually intelligent cops and calls their names, one of them is Ed Burns, one of the creators of the show. David Simon, who wrote the episode, recalled that when he first met Burns who was still working as a cop, the dude was reading a book by the philosopher Hannah Arendt at his desk. Simon went something like, "You're not really a cop, are you?"

redddfer44

It's a small miracle that the show holds so well together. Elements and characters that are introduced in earlier seasons are reincorporated so naturally that it feels like a novel. Typically this sort of coherence requires being able to go back to the early story to hone it. Then again, classic novelists could do it, and Babylon 5 did it before The Wire on tv. Guess it takes a lot of planning and hard-headedness and faith in the importance of the story.

John Richards

You should break precedent and continue directly into Season 4, if for no other reason, it has my favorite of the versions of "Way down in the hole" recorded for the show.

redddfer44

These things without precedents... I dunno... could you maybe show some leg?

Haye Zeus

Sorry George, i’mma call bs on being too tired for a booty call. Ain’t no man too sleepy for that. XD

Michael Kang-Beats

And he wouldn't take a that woman on the phone runs even on the chance that he'd get some action? Cmon, Georgie!

ThePVO

I'm old enough to remember when police public stance on drugs was that it was a public health problem, not a law enforcement problem. The drug war has done more damage than the drugs ever could have.

Jeff K

I’ve watched this show so many times and only just now realized in episode 10, Tommy’s wife is reading a book by Dennis Lehane - the guy who wrote Mystic River, Gone Girl, Shutter Island… and several episodes of The Wire, including episodes 3 and 11 of this season.

John Richards

At one point in the series, Bunk is shown at his desk in Homicide reading a book by Laura Lippman (aka Mrs. David Simon)

Śéáń

Cutty was the main reason I was looking forward to this season. I love his arc from parole to setting up the gym.

Blacky

I'm not going to spoil anything, but the Rawls in a gay bar could be as simple as showing that characters are real people, even if they are not the protagonists of this story we are following they are the protagonist of their own story. It could hint at depth this way. And also that anyone can be gay, there is no "type".

micah

is andor gonna be the next tv series? i remember it coming 2nd to season 3 of the wire😅

Grand Moff Slackin'

Of all the CineBinges, The Wire has been my favorite ride so far.

Chase Schleich

I hope so. I'd like to have a Cinebinge video on Tuesday's that I can watch again. I have no interest in watching The Wire and they've been on The Wire for a long long time (other than the break for Last of Us). There's also season 3 of the Boys and season 3 of Mandalorian that they haven't gotten to yet, unless they watched that stuff on their own time.

PIG

I joined before they did The Wire. After I saw they were doing this show too I was hooked.

UNC

Keep The Wire going! Season 4 is even better in my opinion.

Astraeos

Simone is gonna struggle like hell with Season 4. But it's without a doubt the most powerful, and most poignant. There's just so much to that season. I can't wait for it

Astraeos

Doing this rewatch on this channel, it's honestly crazy how much Season 4 stands out, even amongst the absolute amazing TV that is Seasons 1, 2 and 3. I think it's the particular subject matter, but yeah. We'll figure it out more once the channel gets there.

Travis H

Loving The Wire coverage as always, and can’t wait for the finale next week. Would love for you to continue but understand why you probably won’t immediately. I’m assuming next is probably Andor or Mando, but as I said previously would love to watch a comedy with you two like Good Place or Ted Lasso. George (and Simone) don’t worry about sounds from AC we never hear them and I will speak for everyone here, we would rather you be comfortable than sweating because you were too hot (insert clever, yet tasteful comment about you being attractive)!

redddfer44

Yeap. I've never heard one single background noise they/you have been worrying about. No neighbors, traffic, AC, not even cats purring. The latter's an outrage.

DinChild

Severance would be the perfect balance of comedy and drama. Ted Lasso has its moments, but Severance is sublime. Short investment at this point, too.

Joits

Severance would be a great show for them to react to.

John Richards

I just realized that because this is Patrion only, we miss out on YouTube thumbnails of Simone as Bubbles, Simone as McNulty, or even Simone as Valchek!

Ph4ZeD

Really hope you jump straight into Season 4, it's just incredible

SlaverStudios

Not only are the next two episodes some of the best television imaginable, but the next season (season 4), is probably the best season of television available to the human species. It's equal in quality to Game of Thrones season 1.

james repka

I'm just going to throw this out there: An anthology series that I've seen none of the major channels do, is Noah Hawley's Fargo. It is a show that kind of lives in the same universe as the Coen brothers' movie and brings the same sensibilities and quirks while being a wholly original thing. Each season brings together a brilliant ensemble of characters and wild plots that provide plenty of dramatic tension. There are currently 4 seasons and all are good but 1-3 particularly stand out. Season 5 will be released later this year.

rkhc

I'd say each of the first four seasons of The Wire are higher quality than Game of Thrones season 1, personally.

redddfer44

You asked (in this video, or the previous week?) how the situation in Baltimore is these days. Based on Wikipedia, crime was in decline in the years after the show finished. The yearly numbers of homicides, for instance, dropped to 196 (the first time below 200 since 1978). But it got bleaker after that with devastating 348 homicides in 2019. (By the by, apparently the show painted a bleaker picture of the homicides in the early 00s than was reality: 253 in 2002, 270 in 2003, 276 in 2004... Still not an encouraging number, but lower than the 300 presented as the unrealistic goal in the show.) David Simon's newest miniseries, We Own This City, was based on a nonfiction book about corruption in the Baltimore Police Department. I haven't seen it, but I hear it's even more pessimistic about the BPD than The Wire is.

p0sthum4n

You guys really, seriously, genuinely, legitimately need to watch The Sopranos.

Stan the Man

The Sopranos. Y’all are the last patreon channel I sub to that has yet to watch The Sopranos. TBR Schmitt is going to be done in a couple months so I’m going to need to new Sopranos reaction feed. It’s gotta be you 2.

UNC

Would love The Sopranos! But also would really enjoy Succession. Not enough Succession reactions out there and you both would love it!

Hexon66

@1:42:30 Yeah, what's the point of having something like 4th Amendment rights against unreasonable searches and seizures when you've got a Prosecutor with great legs?
