I feel like this will be George's type of movie

Kangdarius

I like part deux more for sure

BlindPanda

Y’all need to watch Down Periscope 🤘🏻

Gath Bard

The only spoof movie starring the original star of the spoofed movie on basically the same role I can think of right now is "Repossessed" (1990 exorcist spoof movie who actually stars Linda Blair). It's not the exact same character for copyright reasons I assume, but at the same time it is the same character, if you know what I mean.

Andreas Hansson

Yay! My suggestion! I'll have to watch this on my way home from work

Onikaze

the piano scene is a nod to The Fabulous Baker Boys. I believe. Yes in the first Christopher Reeve Superman Movie he reverses time by "winding back the planet" . yeah Paula Abdul had a numerous pop hits in the 90's . Mike Lang the play by play man for the Pittsburgh Penguins had a catchphrase of "Elvis has left the building" when they would clinch a win.

Magnificent Gojira

Hot Shots 2 is also good but it would be much funnier if watched after Rambo 2 and Basic Instinct

Ginger

Holy - Wow, I did not expect to see this today! <3 :)

Garmonbozia93

And you have to know that Martin Sheen and Charlie Sheen starred together in a movie called "Wall Street"

redddfer44

Original stars making a brief appearance in a spoof: Hot Shots Part Deux, Wayne's World (while not a spoof movie as such). You'd recognize both.

Jeff K

It’s not the guy who starred, but John Hurt showed up in Spaceballs to spoof his own role in Alien, too.

Jeff K

The Fabulous Baker Boys, starring Jeff and Beau Bridges… whose dad, Lloyd, plays the Admiral in Hot Shots.

Jeff K

If you’re looking for more spoof movies that are actually worthwhile, I would recommend Not Another Teen Movie, featuring a young Chris Evans as the lead, long, long before he was Captain America. It’s so much better than it has any right to be.

AlimonyMoney

Spoofs don't make money, it cost too much to make them and the profit is low.

Jeff K

What's wild is how different that reality is to the way the box office used to be. These days, comedies in general don't make money, which is why they almost always go directly to streaming at this point. It's funny, I was listening to the new episode of the "Unspooled" podcast and this one is on Young Frankenstein. That came out the same year as Blazing Saddles. Saddles was 2nd and Frankenstein was 3rd (two spoofs!) at the box office for that entire year. Now? Like you said, spoofs are box office poison.

BND

Yeah Paula Abdul was massively huge in the 90's

Marc Post

The second one “Hot Shots: Part Deux is even better

Jeb Manning

You definitely should do the sequel, Hot Shots! Part Deux. It's even better, and kinda even crazier. Also just really funny and it has onre of my favorite Miguel Ferrer roles.

UnSafeStu

Massive spoof fan. Sad they don't make them like this anymore. Part Deux is my favourite and Men In Tights. I'd use these movies to see if the girl I was dating had the same sense of humour as me.

Thomas Wendel

Top secret is the same kind of movie as this. There is a scene in there that I think George would love because he always mentions the cliche they make fun of

Jeff K

I love Top Secret! so, so much. It’s positively brilliant.

Rob Church

Dying for you guys to watch Wet Hot American Summer. One of the best comedies IMO

Nate Gavin

Yikes - not a comedy imho

Andrew Charles

To your answer your question about spoof movies with the original star, "The Last Action Hero" with Schwarzenegger comes close to that definition. It's a total parody of his own movies.

Nimo-the-Red

Hot Shots 2 (Part Deux) I think is better, but I saw it first so that may color the way I view the movies. Loaded Weapon 1 is another really fun spoof of more movies that you have seen then probably any other, although waiting until after you see Basic Instinct would make a few of the gags funnier, but it is lethal weapon and Jackie Brown that are the main spoof points. Stars Emilio Estevez and Samuel L. Jackson.

Jimmie V

You're right about Lethal Weapon, but Loaded Weapon came out way before Jackie Brown (at that point, he hadn't even worked with Tarantino at all including True Romance and Pulp Fiction).

Some ideas on spoofs and their problems (these are of course generalizations and might not apply to the best ones): - Even when they have actual plots, there's rarely a sense of buildup. The last joke is as independent from the whole as the first one. Other types of comedies often do escalation and reincorporation better. - Reliance on having seen other films from that period. It's fun when it's fresh, but might not age that well. And recommending spoof movies to reactors is like, "It's an absolutely hilarious ride, but please watch these 10 classics first so you're in on the jokes!" - The gags are often scene-length and can be really hit or miss. Even though others movies have that jokes that aren't funny, too, they're not often so on-the-nose with those. Watching a spoof movie can feel like spending time with someone who tries to make you laugh with everything they say and expects laughter. It's kinda painful to watch an old favorite that's sometimes hilarious, but equally often embarrassingly bad.

Pajander

Recommendation for Police Squad!, the 1982 TV series (it's only six 30 minute episodes). I haven't seen Top Secret!, but other than that I think it's the best thing these guys have done.

Niklas Ericsson

George, you asked about spoof movies where the original star reprises their role. Hot Shots Part Deux does that, with Richard Crenna essentially playing Trautman from Rambo again.

redddfer44

I only recently saw Top Secret! Having seen the rest of their stuff way back when for the first time, I wasn't sure if I'd like it at this age. But I did! The Naked Gun films were a terrible disappointment upon rewatch, but Police Squad! still had a lot of that deadpan charm that was their forte. I agree on it being the best thing they ever did.

Andreas

And another guy from a vietnam war movie does it too. No Spoilers here

Donald Selvester

Maybe try Loaded Weapon (primarily a Lethal Weapon spoof) with Emilio Estevez and Sam Jackson? On a side note, Emilio was married to Paula Abdul, so she was Charlie's sister in law.

Justin Hearst

Hi George and Simone, If you'd like a really underrated but great Spoof /Parody movie, Black Dynamite is definitely a big one. It makes fun of 70's Blaxploitation movies (think Shaft and Foxy Brown) as well as elements of Shaw Brothers Kung Fu Movies.

Jens

Cant wait for hot shots two! Its even better!

Danika Silva

Last Action Hero 💯💯💯💯👍🙏🇨🇦

Quigonjim25

The lack of comments telling them to watch 'Top Secret' is disturbing.. and no.. they don't need to watch every film it spoofs to get the jokes. Its perfect.

Joanthan Skidmore

There's a lot of great comedy in this, helps if you know the films it spoofs.. The Worlds Fastest Indian doesn't require any prior knowledge!

John Richards

the problem with "Hot Shots" is that it does not spoof a specific genre - it spoofs a bunch of unrelated movies of the time period, so it struggles to fit them into a plot, and unless you've seen all of the movies being spoofed it does not age well. Spoofing a genre - which Mel Brooks was a master of - results in better movie.

Lachlan Caldwell

4:25 George: "Has there ever been a spoof movie where the original star, from the original movie showed up?" Does John Hurt recreating the chest-burster scene from Alien in Spaceballs count?
