Lol, they got so caried away with the shaky cam in this one.

Alexander Sparf

So pleased that this trilogy is being watched by you two now, I revisited these movies recently and liked them even more than I had the first time around. I liked how well the shaky cam worked, contrary to how I remember feeling on my first viewing. It follows the action in terms of pure energy, rather than showcasing everything in perfect detail. Shaky cam cinematography only received it's infamous reputation after everyone started copying these movies, without giving a second thought as to WHY and HOW these movies used it. Also, have I typed "these movies" enough times?

Joits

It made me so mad because before the movie came out, they made such a big deal about them using various martial arts styles for Bourne's character... and then we couldn't see a thing! He could have just been playing patty cake and we wouldn't know.

redddfer44

The best is yet to come \o/

redddfer44

No, you didn't. The first time I watched these movies, I had issues with the shaky cam in this movie. But then I watch the third one and it sort of unlocked the perk "Understand Paul Greengrass Editing!" Then, upon rewatching these movies, I grokked the second one better and could appreciate it for what it was. Still, as I get older and rewatch these movies, this movie sadly gives me a slight nausea for the visuals.

Have you considered a remotely operated spray bottle to deal with Georges puns?

David Guin

You're going to love the Ultimatum.

I was the one who noted Greengrass’ shaky cam was egregious! (Okay, plenty of other people probably also mentioned it being a Greengrass thing. He’s the primary practitioner and promoter of shaky cam.) I can understand why Matt Damon loves Greengrass - shaky cam makes it so much easier to shoot these action sequences. Wide shot hides some flaws, but with shaky cam/ quick cuts you can edit almost anything into existence, no matter how good the actors/ stuntmen were, with fewer takes, and less burden on the production generally. I agree with Simone that it doesn’t bother me as much as it does George, but I’m aware it’s a little “cheap” and other stunts/ fight sequences are greater accomplishments of skill and choreography. Last - definitely with George that the story is fabulous (and Brian Cox, Joan Allen, and Julia Stiles) here, and it only gets better in Ultimatum. Last last - the only sign I could see in German said “More (blank) for all” - couldn’t quite read the second word. But of course reasonable to assume it was a fake sign, or otherwise not a real protest. Never stop making dad jokes, George, just for Simone to call you out on them

About the geography in movies - I live in Prague where Bourne Identity was shot (Prague standing in for Zürich). All US embassy and Zürich exterior scenes were filmed within a couple of blocks and I used to work in the area. It was quite funny to see Jason Bourne walking in one direction and emerging on the street three blocks away on the opposite side of the neighborhood. Also the lollipop building in Berlin is Fernsehturm (TV Tower) built by the East Germany in 1960s as a symbol of the communist power (3rd tallest building at that time) and therefore one of the symbols of the Cold War in Europe.

Yay! We've almost reached Albert Finney! :-)

David Sumner

I HATE this movie! I hate what it did to cinema. Literally, for nearly ten years, every single action movie, with the exception of some superhero movies, insisted on shoving shaky cam down our throats. With a few exceptions, like Die Hard 4 or Casino Royale, there were no decent straight action movies made in Hollywood until around the first John Wick. That's a big reason why superhero movies became so successful. If you wanted to watch a decent action movie, it had to be a superhero movie because every other action movie was incomprehensibly edited. I think the nadir has to be Quantum of Solace; you can tell that they shot pretty decent footage for that movie but then they ruined it with some of the worst editing ever seen.

David Sumner

Also, it really irritates me when they kill off the love interest from the first movie at the beginning of the second movie. It retroactively makes the first movie less involving. It also smacks of lazy writing whenever they hit the reset button.

Quigonjim25

I forgot how much of a pain this film is to watch. Dont think ill be able to get through it in one sitting.

Kangdarius

I’ll only watch til Ol girl gets killed. I’ll need a bucket for the rest. That shaky cam will give anyone vertigo by the 3rd act

Some Guy Some Where

I didn't mind the shaky cam in The Hunger Games - I felt like they needed it there to keep it from being an R without toning down the violence that actually happens. I remember enjoying the movie anyway. The shaky cam in this is why I never watched any of the later Borne films.

redddfer44

I agree that the shakiness goes a bit too far in this one, but I love how the third one combines choreography and editing (and it won an Oscar for editing as well). With a great editor, it's possible to add some special feels to the action. It's not the same as kick-ass choreography with professional fighters, but I can appreciate it for doing its own thing.

Andrew Charles

Never stop, Dad - I mean, George. Never stop.

Jack Burton

There is a subset of people who are overly sensitive to movement and the rest of us it doesn't bother.

Simone: Don't you mean car with the little "woowee woowee thingie"?

FromDarknessComesLight

After watching the video, the thumbnail has new significance. Simone definitely wants payback for all the dad jokes George made. 😜

James Falato

I got the impression "The Bourne Supremacy" film ended with Bourne being told his actual name because it wasn't certain the 3rd novel would ever be made into a film, and so there was no reason to keep his Identity a secret...

Peter Dillard

It's in the next movie but I can tell you a car chase in that movie was a perfect match for the actual geography because I lived and worked there.

Peter Dillard

I also went to the Pinte Neuf bridge when I was in Paris and saw the building where Borne was positioned in the first movie.
