If you guys are continuing through Danny Boyle’s filmography, definitely check out Sunshine (2007), a really fantastic sci-fi film he did.

JediLounger

Oh wow. This movie is a banger, and it’s going to be interesting to see what you guys think of all the wild stuff they get up to. The sequel is worth watching, one of the better “20 years later” sequels that have been made.

JayF

Sooo... Between Saw, Eternal Sunshine, and this one you did manage to mix in Blues Brothers. Can I request some good vibes movies to balance things out a bit? We have Happy Gilmore coming and that's very funny. Funny and/or uplifting - Field of Dreams Moneyball Caddyshack National Lampoon's Vacation Clerks Hoosiers Rudy Moscow on the Hudson (Robin Williams, trust me) A Fish Called Wanda (Jamie Lee Curtis AND some of the Pythons) Maverick (Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster) Secondhand Lions (I guarantee you will both love this one)

About sleeping: I have reached a point where I can fall asleep in like 2-5minutes and I need roughly 6 hours. Somehow I need more if the sun is still down when I wake up. In summer I easily get used to getting up before 5am. And about the movie: My friends loved it when it came out and watched it over and over. I didn't like it as much. Maybe I like it now? Lets see... Right now you are discussing what it might be about on my 2nd screen. And you still seem happy, not sure what will happen :) Afterwards: Simone, it's ok to dislike this. You said you like that this movie doesn't glorify drug use. Let me tell you, I know (knew) people who used hard drugs and most of them liked the movie.

Odd Thomas

tbh I never understood the appeal of this film. It's the cinematic equivalent of the worst hangover of your life. My favourite Danny Boyle film - and one of my favourite films, period - is Sunshine (2007). Please PLEASE watch this.

sarCC

LOVE the opening and closing songs of this movie.

Jay

Can't wait to watch this film for the 50th time tonight, I hope the accents weren't too indecipherable. I doubt you guys will ever have a double bill I love as much as these last 2 days. Maybe 'Paris, Texas' and ' The Wicker Man' next weekend:)

Astraeos

OH SHIIIII. Unexpected and awesome. The soundtrack to this movie is so amazing. Thanks for watching this one too, guys! Ya'll should look up and listen to the song Nightclubbing, by Iggy Pop. It's got David Bowie on there as backing vocals, and its such an amazing song. Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails also has an amazing cover up on Youtube as well

Astraeos

You missed the point of the movie entirely then, not surprising. Let me guess, you probably still think marijuana is evil and should be illegal, right?

King_Panarisi

The French movie Intouchables (2011) is a must watch at some point if you guys ever do a foreign movie poll again.

Spacedone

You should check out some of Robert (the violent Begbie from the movie) Carlyle's movies like the 19th Century horror 'Ravenous' about a remote US military outpost or the feel good comedy 'The Full Monty' about a group of unemployed middle-aged steel workers who decide to form a male strippers act.

PIG

I was offered cocaine in high school in the '90s and I had a couple of friends who liked heroin. I always turned it down. Lost contact with them. I thank watching this movie, as heavy as it is, for showing what this stuff can do to my life and helping me turn it down. ... then my parents got me prescribed and hooked on ritalin as a teen. I think Trainspotting did a much better job for my health than my own family lol

Jay

"You said you like that this movie doesn't glorify drug use. Let me tell you, I know (knew) people who used hard drugs and most of them liked the movie" I hope I've misunderstood this. Are you implying that them seeing and liking Trainspotting was a factor in their drug use?

Jason Rivero

This movie, Requiem for a Dream, and The Basketball Diaries are, in my opinion, the best depictions of the destructive effects of drug addiction. Great reaction as always!

PIG

Side Note: David Bowie is behind the soundtrack and why it's so great. It helped make the movie become a legend ... ;)

Jay

I thought the sequel was OK, also don't think it would be as hard a watch for Simone. I experimented quite a bit in my teens and 20s, but one drug I never went near and will never go near is heroin. I won't say that's just because I saw Trainspotting as a child and it scared the shit out of me, but it probably planted the seed.

Logan Kerlee

Page that I use for streaming is being wonky, so I'm going to have to return to this later - disappointing! I'm 20 or so minutes in though and enjoying the reaction so far. Hope to continue at some point today! :)

Tenn Seven

The actor Robert Carlyle, who played Begbie in this movie is excellent. I recommend checking out "The Full Monty" to see him playing a much more likeable character (in a much more "feel-good" movie).

ShadowStunts

The sequel is incredible. It's unique but still has everything this movie offers. I would love to see you guys react to it.

djKENTO

two emotional bummers in a row... oof...

redddfer44

A cool thing about this film is that when they use a song on the soundtrack, they often play the whole song. Not many movies do that. In fact, I can't think of another one that does this.

REDR58

Once again I maintain everyone who has trouble with accents should watch with captions on!

Joel

This movie is somehow spectacular and shocking and tragic all at the same time, and as you said Simone, it both makes you hate it, but at the same time love it because it doesn't sugar coat the consequences of the drug whatsoever, it shows the evil that it does to people with no filter at all

redddfer44

Many songs and books have been written about substance abuse, but since you were wondering about the junkie's perspective, "Heroin" by The Velvet Underground and "Junkhead" by Alice in Chains are unambiguous about the subject matter. The former describes both the good and the bad, but the latter is pure glorification, plain and simple. The beat writer William S. Burroughs, who spent 15 years as an addict, was asked "What happens to your perception of reality?". He said, "Well, it's always to be remembered that junk or any kind of opiate is a pain killer and therefore it will lessen your perception of reality." (I'm not saying Burroughs was the only authority on addiction, but he has a certain philosophical perspective that I find interesting.)

Travis

Always get this one mixed up with Requiem for a Dream in my Head. This one is worth watching once but it’s too much of a bummer. Can’t do it again.

J.R.

hope you guys do Trainspotting 2 (T2) eventually, worth watching for sure

Steve Mercier

I absolutely love this fucking movie...somewhere on my top 10 with ease. It's one of the most visually interesting, visceral, gut-wrenching, honest, funny, sad, disturbing, amazing movies I've ever seen. Everyone is amazing it, but Ewan McGregor shines. You guys should check out Danny Boyle's first movie (with Ewan McGregor again) called Shallow Grave. Danny Boyle meets Hitchcock--good shit.

Hamesque

If you missed it, Irvine Welsh, who wrote the book this is based on, played the guy who gave Ewan McGregor the suppositories and was also the guy that got the heroin for the big deal at the end. Oh and also I believe police in Scotland did organize showing of this movie when it came for at risk teens.

Kevin B

Toxiplacity can kill you if you have HIV/AIDS.

Hamesque

If you don't have HIV the cats just take control of your body and walk around in your skin.

Tall Paul

The dance track playing at the end of the film is Born Slippy. Genius.

Middy

I'd love to see this happen, just to witness their 180 upon seeing him play one of the nicest guys you could ever hope to meet.

FranciscoGios

This is one of those movies that you definitely keep deep inside your memory vault and maybe forget about seen it. Maybe you guys should watch something adventurous the next time around. Again not complaining it was well made, but definitely don’t REWIND this movie tape.

Hakuna

i said on the poll that simone in particular would hate this movie lol

MacGuffinStuff

I actually wanted you guys to watch this because of Bubs, from The Wire, to see what a fucked up world that life is. But also for the narrative style. One of the best worst movies ever, this movie reminds me of my youth, not because I was on heroin or anything, just because I was 19 when I first saw it, and partying at raves and clubs in Germany, first time really away from home, in the Army, and I bought the DVD and used to come down on this movie because it weirdly relaxed me after a hard night, I guess because I could tell myself, well I may be a druggie POS but at least I'm not on heroin. Sorry Simone, you hated it, and that's fair, it's not pleasant, but I have to admit I love the storytelling aspects of this movie, and Danny Boyle is one of my favorite storytellers. And honestly there's just a whole bunch of stories from my life around that time that when I watch this I remember, definitely keeping those to myself 😂 I used to get into some crazy shit, and then somehow would get out of it and get home safe and sound. I still think I might have an angel looking out for me, there have been so many times in my life where I was just about to be fucked for sure, and I'd either talk my way out or something would happen and I'd get away, seriously, it's freaky. That's why I always try to be a good person, to pay it forward, but not really, because I owe someone for all these close calls. Also, you gotta watch ROME! Some of my private stories involve being a penniless homeless man in Rome for a week, I know that city in a way most tourists never will lol

Grand Moff Slackin'

I saw this movie when it was released in theaters and lied about my age to get in to see it. Cinemark was actually enforcing the R rating age restriction for this one. It's stuck with me ever since. Also, the soundtrack is a banger.

Bennett Holleman

One meaning of trainspotting refers to the needle "tracks" spots on the arms of addicts.

MacGuffinStuff

I'm sorry for the baby scene, I was excited for you guys to watch this but, yeah, that's some dark shit. And heroin is fuckin awful, a very good friend of mine, an honestly beautiful human being, he overdosed on that shit. I don't know I guess this movie is a strange dark ride, but life is sometimes. You guys are sweet summer children I think, but I guess growing up where I did I know a lot of addicts, meth addicts are even worse. Heroin addicts fall asleep, meth heads are up all night.and day, it's like Romero zombies versus 28 Days Later, meth heads are the worst. Anyway, fun fact, Kelly McDonald, this is a story I heard, I may be wrong, but supposedly Danny Boyle was in Edinburgh scouting locations and whatnot for the movie, and Kelly was a sassy bartender, he talked her into auditioning for the Diane part and the rest is history. Also, she even does a perfect Irish accent (not easy btw) in Boardwalk Empire, another great show I recommend, but not before ROME lol.

Jim Frykman

This movie along with Requiem for a Dream certainly convinced me to say "never even once" to heroin at an age before I was ever put into a position where it would have been offered.

Jay

I don't think she hated the movie, I think she hated one or two particular moments.

Kevin B

You guys should watch "The Basketball Diaries" starring Leo DiCaprio and Mark Wahlberg.

Jay Davis

I would LOVE for us to get to watch Simone react to Rome. Who cares if George has already seen it? No one cares about Ge... I kid. I kid!

Senec

I absolutely hate this movie. Maybe this is just my take as a suburban white middle aged guy, but watching people spiral into oblivion on drugs, and all of the fucked up shit that can and will happen when you dont take control of your life just isnt entertaining to me. And then to really drive it home, theres lots of disgusting scenes, like the baby, and constant import export of heroine in and vomit and shit out. Just... why? For the record, I was psyched about this movie for its soundtrack since it had some early techno, and I was always trying to find more. I ended up seeing this when I was about 19, and it haunted me for at least a week after watching it.

Rachel W

Such a great film.

GreenResistance

"Oh my god, I want to get this soundtrack." Yes, you do--both albums.

MadCat

1) That toilet? "It was meticulously clean," remembers the director, adding that all the fecal-looking elements were, in fact, different kinds of chocolate. "The set smelled really sweet — delicious, really, kind of like a confectionary. You could have licked the chocolate right off the bowl." 2) Irvine Welsh (book author) himself has explained in a Q&A that the title is also a reference to people thinking that the hobby of trainspotting (literally the activity of watching trains and writing down the numbers that each railway engine has) makes no sense to non-participants. Likewise, the same applies to heroin addiction: to non-addicts the act seems completely pointless whereas, to someone hooked on heroin, it makes absolute sense. 3) As a non-native speaker, I gave up on reading the book after about 50 pages, because it is mostly written in dense Scottish and was a nightmare for me to focus on. An example from the job interview: Interviewer – What would you see as being your main strengths? Spud – Er... sense ay humour, likesay. Ye need that man, goatay huv it, jist goatay huv it, ken? Spud's inner monologue – Ah’ll huv tae stoap sayin ‘ken’ sae much. These dudes might think ah’m a sortay pleb.

Charlotte Drolet

Well, I made it a week without you guys. But my Tuesday morning was missing something. I kept wondering what you guys were watching. So I am back!

Opti_Frog

Dead baby in the crib is the only slightly disturbing bit in the movie for me, and what disturbs me is the agony and distress of the mother. The rest of the movie, even the fucked up stuff, is punctuated or laced with pitch black comedy and gallows humour. The tone of the film is PERFECT. I mean, the extremely fake baby crawling across the ceiling is hardly played straight. More like an absurd and surreal comical nightmare. Requiem for a Dream is 10 times more harrowing for me.

MacGuffinStuff

I hope you guys eventually watch the sequel, T2, I liked it and it rounded out the story, you find out what the term "Trainspotting" actually refers to, and I promise no babies die.
