The Wire: Season 5 - Episode 5 & 6 - Patreon Version

JediLounger

Getting down…to the wire(sorry lol). You guys should watch a show so far from reality once you finish.

Boyan Konov

I know you guys get recommended a 100 shows per week but i do hope you do some of David Simons other work. Generation kill about the war in iraq is considered the most realistic depiction of war and the recently released We Own This City is a spiritual successor to the wire with a lot of the cast of the wire returning to new roles. Or just do a complete 180 and do something fun like New Girl or Its Always Sunny in Phily or Spy x Family.

rmv4life

We Own This City is only 6 episodes and should absolutely be the follow up to The Wire. It's cool that they have a lot of the same actors but the true story line is great and sheds some light on The Wire and what was going on in the Baltimore police squad. In The Wire, Daniels always had his past held over his head from Burrell that they always allude to but never really explain and I have to imagine he was originally in one of those street units that did some shady police work before getting out of the unit and moving on, similar to Jaime Hectors character.

Chris

Both missed Gus and Alma talking about Prop Joe and Hungry Man being killed. Huge drug lords reduced to a few lines in the local paper.

Martin

Euphoria would be a great series to start next. Or, if you want to go the animated route, I highly recommend Invincible.

Boyan Konov

Also in real life the real Omar jumped from 6 stories and survived. Iirc he broke one of his legs and limped out to a car and escaped a gun fight.

GDC

The radio host who interviewed Clay Davis is a former Baltimore city councilman who was convicted for corruption and who Clay Davis is partially based on.

Jeff K

Yep. The guy who made the jump was Donnie Andrews, the guy who was with Omar in the scene. They changed it from 6th floor to 4th floor because they didn’t think anyone would believe he could survive from the 6th.

Chris

The only place to go after this is to start the second best show ever, The Sopranos

G P

Check out OZ or the Sopranos next!

Young Blood Priest

Beef is a good series and it’s a quick watch. Eight or ten episodes I don’t remember which.

Jeff I.

Yes! They would love it. Some amazing acting from the leads, and it's got a great mix of emotion, drama, and humor. It's 10 episodes, but they're all like 35 minutes or so.

JayF

Still hoping for Breaking Bad. The fact that you've now seen two movies with a very important cast member to the show and haven't recognized him gives me hope that neither of you have seen it. Please at least give the first season a watch. It's the best show start to finish that I've ever seen.

If people are suggesting shows, Deadwood is a great one to get into. It's a show I'm always at risk of doing another full watch through (it also made a cameo earlier in this show, playing on a hospital bed tv) The Bear is also a great, quick show to get through. It's some of my favourite TV in a couple years. Both shows have great characters, and a very good mix of drama/comedy.

dieselbeast

Would love for y'all to react to The Sopranos one day 🙏

Tom McDonald

The statue that McNulty is talking to is of Samuel Smith, located on Federal Hill above the Baltimore Harbor. Smith was the Mayor of Baltimore, a Senator and soldier during the American Revolution and the War of 1812. He commanded the city's defenses during the British attack on Baltimore, a battle that inspired the American national anthem.

Śéáń

Fun fact, the word Baltimore comes from the Irish "Baile an tí mór", a place in Ireland that means "town of the large house". It was an English plantation back in the day. We have a Baltimore town as well in another party of the country.

Deadwood isn’t just a great show but a great fit for George and Simone’s strength as reactors. Just like The Wire there’s a powerful intellectual discussion about the role of society, a deep emotional connection to the humans trying to find a place in the society, and beautiful language in the dialogue.

G P

Speaking of John Waters, you should watch Pink Flamingos

Jeff K

A suggestion for the next series after Wire: Succession. It’s honestly got a very similar tone. Very serious and often dark, but it’s also incredibly funny with AMAZING performances and characters.

Jay Davis

You both changed shirts. What the hell HAPPENED in those bathrooms?!?!

Emptysea93

Since you are getting close to the end of the Wire, I also want to recommend something on the less realistic and more fantastical side. Personally I also enjoy you both watching comedies, so I would love to see you both try watching What We Do in The Shadows (both the show and movie) or maybe react to the new Futurama season as it comes out since I know George is a fan based on the amount of times he references it!

Luis

Atlanta is a great next choice after The Wire. Big stars, super funny, weird, and extremely relevant today.

Grand Moff Slackin'

I think they were already intercepting text messages with Stringer and Barksdale.

Ginger

That's nice but WHEN ARE YOU WATCHING THE WIRE SEASON 3??? ;p <3

Jeff K

Can’t wait for next week, and… yeah. Bracing for impact on that reaction. Big, big, big things coming.(They’ve almost certainly already watched it by now so, I assume, so I assume my hinting at something massive isn’t a spoiler.)

Shibby

However you might spoil it for anyone else watching along for the first time

Joe

If it's not already in consideration for Wire replacement, Black Sails should definitely be on the list.

John Richards

I want to make a "Wire adjacent" movie suggestion. Tom McCarthy, who plays Scotty Templeton, went on to write and direct the best newpaper movie in the last 40 year: "Spotlight"

Michael Kang-Beats

Yo. You two are cops! LOL. Rooting for snitching, then Herc handing over Marlow's number illegally. LOL. ACAB!

Aj

Oh, be quiet, loser. You ACAB folks are pathetic.

Byron Abrahams

I thought someone would have mentioned this, but I don't see any comment about it. The part where Omar jumps from the window... His stories were based on a real guy Ed Burns and David Simon knew in Baltimore. When they were scouting a location for the scene, that was the best building they found, and people criticized the lack of realism. Problem is, the real guy jumped from the SEVENTH floor, not the fourth, like in the show.

Hexon66

The use of the surname Bond, for a young Black up-and-coming State's Attorney would much more likely be referencing Julian Bond, co-founder of SNCC, rather than a pop culture dandy like James Bond.

Angela D. Mitchell

Seeing Randy again was so heartbreaking. And Bunk is stupid enough to go to the group home openly? I mean, JFC, Randy has a snitch tag already. Way to be subtle, Bunk. Poor Randy. It probably set him back again for more abuse and beatings, too. Frickin' Herc. I'll never forgive him for it. So sad to see Sobotka's nephew again, but I loved that he spoke up in memory of Frank. I know you guys love Gus, so I just want to note that he is played by the fantastic actor/director Clark Johnson, who was also a main character in David Simon's superb "Homicide: Life on the Street" TV show (he played Meldrick, on whom I had a massive crush that still abides). It's hard to find because of music issues, but I absolutely recommend that you guys check out "Homicide: Life on the Street" -- amazing show, amazing cast, and Andre Braugher (RIP) was utterly unforgettable -- a force of nature.
